Prompt: "Please tell me this is not why you woke me."
Chloe was exhausted; the bone deep, I-could-sleep-for-a-month, type of exhausted that made her head spin as she sat on the edge of her bed and leaned down to untie the laces of her sneakers. It was five in the morning, and she groaned quietly, not wanting to wake her roommate, who was of course, sound asleep and snoring quietly.
Vet school was kicking Chloe's ass. Between classes, labs and her rotations at the school's public clinic, she was feeling overtaxed. Then an emergency case had come in and she'd been up for thirty-six hours monitoring the little dog post-surgery. She was too tired to even eat so she swallowed some pain pills for her headache and got out of her scrubs before collapsing face first onto her bed in her underwear and crashing almost instantly.
I'm bulletproof, nothing to lose,
Fire away, fire away.
The music prodded Chloe out of a deep slumber and her hand came up to rub at her nose as her brain struggled to bring her to consciousness
Ricochet, you take your aim
Fire away, fire away.
The redhead groaned and rolled over to pull her phone out from under her pillow. She answered it and then buried her face back into the soft surface.
"Hrmfffrr..." she said.
"Oh my God, Chloe! I'm freaking out!"
Chloe lifted her head again, worry catapulting her right into alertness. "Beca, what's wrong? Are you ok?"
"You won't BELIEVE what just happened," her best friend replied excitedly. "I just got a DM from Sia, congratulating me on my new song! From SIA, Chloe!"
The redhead's heart began to calm its frantic pounding. "Please tell me that's not why you woke me."
There was silence for a moment. "But... it's one in the afternoon where you are," Beca said uncertainly. "Right? I... I thought you'd think that was... sorry, Chlo. Go back to sleep."
"No, wait..." Chloe said gently, rubbing between her eyebrows. "I'M sorry, Becs. It's just... it's been an overwhelming few days, and I've barely slept. It's fucking awesome that Sia DM'd you. I can't tell you how proud of you I am!"
There was quiet again and then the singer spoke softly. "I miss you and I'm sorry you're having such a hard time."
Chloe rolled onto her back and sighed. "I miss you too and I'm sorry I took my bad mood out on you."
"I'll be there in two weeks," Beca said. "I promise."
The redhead grinned a little. "Honestly, I just can't wait to kiss you."
Beca's chuckle was music to Chloe's ears. "Me neither. Two weeks, Babe."
Chloe wanted to say more. "Beca... I..." But it didn't feel right saying it over the phone for the first time and she just exhaled softly.
"Me too," the brunette replied a little shyly. "Go back to sleep, Chlo, ok? I'll call you tomorrow."
"Ok," the redhead replied. "Talk tomorrow."
And this time, Chloe fell back to sleep with a smile on her lips.
