The day went on normally for the citizens of Safe Haven. Everybody was doing their own business, carrying on with their lives. One of those people, is Damian, our familiar dark prince spending his days studying in the Zoophoenix Academy. Usually, everyday would have gone the same way. Him arriving at school on the nick of time, talking to his friends at the lockers and probably a few instances of bothering Kayla to get her attention. Unfortunately, today wasn't a normal day. It all started because of one particular event.
"Hello? Damian you're there?"
A feminine voice rang inside Damian's ears making snap out from his daze. He carried an oblivious face with a hint of shock.
"You're okay there dude?" Sahara asks him as she places her hand on his shoulder.
"Huh? Y-yeah!" He stumbles through his words as the news she had brought him was ultimately shocking.
"Zill and Kayla... broke up?" He thought to himself as the gears in his mind starts turning trying to think of the situation.
"What're you thinking Damian?" Athena asks him as she puts on a concerned look worried of his intentions.
There was a million questions running through his mind but one that stood out was...
"H-how did you found out about this? " Damian asks Sahara.
"I've accidently eavesdropped on Zill and Jack earlier. He looks distressed... Zill, I mean!" Sahara explains.
"This is weird..." Damian says in his mind as Athena questions his statement.
"How so?" Athena asks him.
"Damian, you're awfully quiet!!" Addison remarks at his unusual silent mood.
"I'll tell you about it later!" Damian quickly tells her before swiftly turning his gaze to Addison.
"Oh, umm... I'm just shocked!" Damian tells Addison as his mind was still trying to process the information.
"Did... they talk about how it happened? Or something, anything?" Damian asks Sahara as he puts on a serious face.
"I don't know, I just felt it was awkward to continue eavesdropping so I left right after!" Sahara explains.
She then turns her head to Vince and Leo who both have the same look as her. She didn't even need to turn to Addison to know that he also carried the same face. All of them have the same thought in their mind but Sahara was the first one to speak about it.
"Damian... you're not going to bother Kayla, are you?" Sahara asks with a concerned frown. Even if he was her friend, she was worried that Damian would bother Kayla all day long.
Damian carried a surprise look at her question before he suddenly chuckles which worried all of them even more.
"Don't worry guys! I'm not going to do anything!!" He chuckles at them.
Sahara felt a bit relieved but she still was a bit sceptical. Her eyes then locked onto his before she asks him.
"Are you sure?" She asks him this time with a more serious tone. She knew how he felt about Kayla but she was afraid he would go too far to the point of no return. Even if he is her friend, she wants what's best for Kayla, in reality, she wants what's best for the both of them. This thoughts running through Sahara's mind was also no strangers to the minds of the rest.
Damian continues chuckling before resting his crimson hand on her shoulder. Sahara could feel the weight of his arms which was much heavier than before.
"Come on! I promise!! You can trust me!" Damian reassures her as he gives her an innocent and toothy grin. Sahara smiles as she felt relieved by his answer.
"Anyways, catch you guys later!" Damian says to them before he leaves the group walking along the hallway.
"Eehhh, I don't feel good about this!" Addison says to Sahara.
"Come on, you know when Damian promises on something, he usually delivers! Plus, I have a gut feeling that everything's gonna be just fine!" Sahara reassures him.
"How are you so sure?" Vince and Leo both asks simultaneously fretting about it.
"Well, for starters, he's crazy in love with her, he wouldn't want to waste his only chance with her now, would he?" Sahara gives them a mischievous grin as the other three just sweatdrops at her answer. Sahara just giggles at her friends response but deep inside she also hopes that she didn't misplace her faith.
"Soooo... where are you going exactly?" Athena asks Damian who was rushing towards somewhere.
"Well, I need to find her!" Damian answers with a smile.
"WHAT?!!! WOAH, WOAH, WOAH, Hold your horses Damian! You what now?!" Athena asks in utter shock.
"I'm going to go look for Kayla! Why?"
"WHY?!! You just promised that you won't bother her like 5 seconds ago!" Athena struggled to understand his behaviour.
"Chill out, I'm just checking in on her! Technically not bothering her so what's the big deal?!" Damian responded blatantly as he continues walking.
"The big deal is that you shouldn't! The poor girl just went through a break-up! She needs time alone!" Athena explains.
"I told you, I'm not going to bother her! Plus, she's probably over it already and I'm just going to- oh we're here!" Damian says as they stood in front the door of the theatre room. His hand immediately reaches for the door know before Athena places her hands on his stopping him.
"Damian... are you sure about this?!" Athena asks him softly while maintaining direct contact with his eyes. Damian looks into her eyes for a few seconds before shaking his head and ignoring her.
His hands twists open the knob as he enters the theatre room.
"Huh... it's quiet..." Damian thought as there was no one in sight. Perhaps they're hanging out somewhere else. Just as he was about to turn around and leave, something caught his eye. It was Kayla's bag on the ground besides the piano.
"Ooh great! She's here!" Damian thought to himself.
He then proceeds to walk down the steps towards the stage as he looks around but still couldn't see her. He then hears her voice, it was muffled but he knew it was hers. He then pinpoints her location behind the curtains on the stage.
"She's backstage!"
He then proceeds to move towards the curtain slowly as he didn't want to alert her. He then reaches his hand out as he pulls the curtains aside and carves a smile in his face. He was ready to greet Kayla before his hands immediately froze after he heard something. A series of soft sobs.
She's... crying...
He could hear her whimpers behind the curtains as he stood in place. He immediately carved a serious face before slowly peeking through the curtains. He then saw the sight of Kayla crying her heart out while sitting on a bench. She was continuously rubbing her tears away from her eyes as she continues sobbing. He could see tears flowing down her cheeks and he was immediately filled with guilt and regret. He just stares at her while being unable to move the whole time. All he could do was watch.
Kayla was still crying as she opens her eyes and looks below her, staring at the wooden floor stained with her tears. Suddenly, her ears perks up when she picked up some noises in front of her. She immediately looks up to see the curtains moving slightly so she thought someone was near.
"Wh-who's there?!" She asks while still trying to control her tears as she rubs her eyes. She didn't want anyone seeing her crying.
However, no one answered. Kayla then stood up as she makes her way to the curtains. She then slowly grabs the cloth as she pulls it aside and peaks at the empty stage. It was silent and there was no one. She thought she must imagined it as she rubs her tears and went backstage.
Meanwhile, outside the theatre and in the hallway, Damian was seen standing with his back against the wall. His eyes opened wide as he was still in a state of confusion. He looks down at the floor and immediately regretted his decision. He then notices Athena on his side as he turns to her.
"Give her time..." Athena reassures him as Damian slowly nods. He didn't knew that it affected her really bad. He never even saw her cry before and somehow seeing her in such a state broke his heart. And he thought back to how excited he was when he knew that she broke up without ever thinking how she would have felt.
"Dammit!" Damian curses as he looks below him with regret, his fists clenched and his fangs showing.
LUNCHTIME
Damian was seen sitting on a bench with his friends as they enjoy their school lunch. The group of friends seems to have a hearty peace of conversation...well, at least the four of them. Damian was actually too occupied as he was just staring at Kayla who was eating alone on the opposite side of the cafeteria.
"You've been staring at her for the whole day!" Athena commented as she was floating besides him.
"Sorry, I can't help it...I can't just...ya know, ignore her after earlier!" Damian gave his reasons to Athena.
"Well, at least you're not bothering her... still, I get your point. She does look miserable!" Athena says as she turns to Kayla.
"Yeah, never seen her so down like this..." Damian says before turning his eyes towards another table. His eyes turn from sympathy to anger as he stares daggers at Zill who was also eating. The prick that made Kayla cry. Athena noticed his glare and clears her throat.
"It's alright Damian. No need to get so worked up!" Athena tries to calm him down.
"I still don't understand why the fuck did he dump her out of nowhere! She was crying because of him!" Damian didn't care if Kayla hated him, he didn't care if he had nothing to do with her. As vile as he was, he never once made her cry.
"It doesn't matter Damian. It's none of our business. Just leave him be for now! It's not good to dive deeper into stuff we don't know!" Athena advises him as she continues floating around.
"At least he's giving her some space."
"Doesn't matter, I'm still pissed!" Damian ignores what Athena said making her shake her head.
"Hey Damian! What're you doing?" Addison suddenly ask making him flinch.
He immediately turns his head to see not only Addison, but all of his friends looking at him.
"I...uh... was...ummm..." Damian struggles to come up with a logical answer.
"You're thinking about her aren't you?!" Sahara says which made Damian panic.
"Nono, I wasn't... look, I'm just-
"Damian it's fine. We understand how you feel!" Addison says which caught Damian by surprised.
"I'm sorry guys. You know how important she is to me. I just can't see her like that..."
"Give her time Damian. She'll get over it soon enough!" Sahara advises him.
"Come on bro, she'll be fine!" Vince speaks with a mouthful of macaroni in his mouth almost spraying bits of it everywhere.
"Dude! Talk after you're done chewing! You're spurting it everywhere!" Leo tells him as he wipes some pieces off his shirt.
"No I'm not! And you do this all the time as well!" Vince retorts at his brother.
"What?! No I don't!!"
"Yes you do, you lying piece of shit!"
"Well, if I'm a piece of shit, what does that make you?"
"What the hell are you talking about?"
"I'm saying you're also a piece of shit dumbass! We're twins! God! Why did I have to be the smart one?!" Leo says as he massages his temples"
"Say that again you motherfucker!" Vince growls at his brother as he slams the table. His fangs showing as his snout wrinkles.
"My mom's your mom dickweed!" Leo growls back as he stares daggers at his brother. Both of them stood up growling at each other which annoyed Sahara.
"BOYS!! SIT DOWN!" Sahara yells at them making them whimper as they shrunk to their seats.
"Yes boss..." Both of them said in unison and in fear.
Hahahahhaha...
All of them soon turn their heads to see Damian laughing out loud. He was even holding his stomach as tears escapes his eyes. Sahara was first to follow suit with laughing and soon the rest of them joined as well. The group indulge in their laughter and completely ignored the eyes that were on them as their laughs filled the cafeteria.
"You guys crack me up!" Damian chuckles as he wipes his tear.
"Haaa... I miss this..." Damian adds as he breathes a sigh of relief and continues to look at his friends.
"Well, missed you as well!" Leo voices as Damian looks at him. He then moves his head to look at all the relieved faces of his friends. He wasn't able to enjoy this experience the past couple weeks prior to meeting Athena. Maybe he did and he just never knew.
"I'm sorry if I wasn't myself this past few weeks. I was just... thinking, about myself... I didn't realize I was ignoring you guys as well..." Damian apologies as he switches his glance between his gang of friends.
"Awww, it's alright... But next time, you know that don't have to face your problems alone right? We're here for you. We're friends after all!" Addison spoke softly as he looks at Sahara who nods in return. Vince and Leo followed suit and nodded as well.
"I'll keep that in mind and... thanks guys. This means a lot to me!" Damian assures them as he gives off a warm smile.
"More than Kayla?" Vince jokes.
"Okay, know your limit!" Damian responds as the gang once again indulge in a hearty laugh.
"So, this are your friends huh?" Athena suddenly asks Damian.
"Yep! This is why I'm here! I'll do anything for these guys!" Damian speaks as he felt gifted by the presence of his friends. His smile lingers on his face as a feeling of gratefulness engulfs him.
"Well... they're something!" Athena giggles at their quirks and antiques.
"They're everything!" He thought in his mind before suddenly shifting his face secretly as he lays his eyes on a lonely Kayla.
"Her too..."
3 Hours Later
Night had just struck the land of Save Haven. The school period has long ended and Damian decided to have a stroll under the moonlight.
Damian and Athena was walking around the city before Damian suggested her to follow him. They then arrived at a quiet part of the town where Damian suddenly spoke.
"So... I want to show you something!" Damian reveals to Athena who raised an eyebrow.
"Show me what?" Athena asks him brimming with curiosity.
"Well, you'll just have to see!" Damian cheekily answers which made Athena pout.
"Awe tease! Come on, just tell me!" Athena retorts but Damian didn't respond. Instead, he suddenly sprinted before teleporting inside a building.
"What the?! Hey!!" Athena yells at him as she follows suit.
"Won't anybody see us breaking in?" Athena worriedly asks Damian.
"This building hasn't been completed for ages. It's abandoned a long time ago so I'll doubt anyone even hangs out here anymore! Well, except for me and the gang!" Damian explains in haste.
"Damian, where you're going exactly?" Athena frantically ask a speedy Damian as they were suddenly climbing up a set of stairs in the building.
"Come on! You'll miss it!" Damian didn't answer her but beckons her to trail his steps.
"Miss what? Wait up!!" Athena yells at him but he didn't listen as he kept climbing up the stairs.
Soon, she sees Damian reaching the top of the stairs before bursting through a door. There was sort of a flash of light so she couldn't see what's beyond the door. It blinded her for a while before her vision returns to her steadily.
"Where are... woaaahhh!!" She gasps at the sight of a giant golden fish floating in front of her. She was bedazzled by the sight of such majestic creature. Her mouth gaped open but no words escape from it except the gasps of astonishment.
Damian watches her on the sidelines with a smirk carved on his face.
The glow of the fish enchanted her eyes as she couldn't keep them off it. There were just so...
"Beautiful aren't they?!" Damian suddenly asks which caught her attention.
"Yeah..." Those are the only words that came out off her mouth. The only words she was able to mutter at the spectacular enigma in front of her.
"How did you-
- Know about this place?" Damian cuts her off as he knew exactly what she wanted to ask.
"Well, long story. Addison used to sulk a lot and he came by this place by accident. He was the one who showed it to us and it's been one of our favourite spots since then!" Damian explains.
"One of?" Athena asks him.
"I can't just show you everything! Let's just keep them as surprises for later!" Damian teases her.
Athena admired the view for quite a while. Both of them stayed up there until the giant fish left as Athena felt sad. At least, it was fun while it lasted.
"I hope this will suffice as an apology!" Damian tells her.
"Apology? For what?"
"For not being able to show you around the city! I hope this was enough!"
Suddenly, Athena jumps and embraces him catching him by surprise.
"It's perfect! Thank you!" She sounds out with full gratefulness.
Damian smiles as he embraces her back.
"So, wanna go somewhere else?" Damian asks her.
"Well, maybe tomorrow! Wahhhhh" She suddenly yawns cutely which made Damian confused.
"I'm getting sleepy!"
"Do ghost even need to sleep?" Damian asks her in confusion.
"No, but I still ne-
"Damian, I sense something!" Athena nonchalantly said.
"Sense what?" Damian immediately puts on a serious face.
"Someone's in trouble!" She explains before looking around.
"There!" She points at a direction which goes beyond the edge of the rooftop.
"Dammit!" He then immediately runs to the edge of the rooftop as he tries to look for the possible source of danger. He then managed to pinpoint the location as he lays his eyes on the sight of three male surrounding a woman. The men was seeing surrounding and probably was harassing her.
"Hooligans!" Damian curses.
"You should go and help her!" Athena asks Damian but he just stood still.
"I... don't know about that! Maybe, if I just call the cops? I really wouldn't want to get in trouble with some gang..." Damian answers which made Athena's eyes bulge.
"We can't just wait for the cops to come! What if something happens to her! They're gonna keep harassing her if we just stand still!" Athena yells at Damian.
"Look, we can't just help anyone who's in trouble! Didn't you say I should avoid conflict if possible?" Damian retorts at her.
"I can't believe you're thinking like that! Come on! We need to help her! This is a different scenario!"
"Look, I'll just call the cops and if things looks as if they're going to go south, I'll help okay?! Plus, you really shouldn't worry all to much. After all, I-
"Hey you!!! Get your hands off her!" A voice suddenly yells out near the area which made Damian's ear perk. He knows that voice all too well.
He quickly turns his vision back at the scene as he saw a new person who has arrived. A person who challenged the group of miscreants.
"Oh no! Kayla!!!" Damian gasps out with anxiety at the perfect coincidence god has given him. A series of events, perfectly lined up just for him.
Choices! They are what made the path of life diverge. Now, Damian must choose his path. The path of negligence or the path of redemption. The path of being a hero. One choice, one chance, one demon.
