All his eyes could see was the view of a gun pointed towards Kayla. In that very moment, he abandoned his mind as his legs started moving. The only thing that was present at that very moment was the need to save her.
Everything became a blur, every noise dulled. Only a single flash can be seen coming from the gun. At that moment, the only thing hid eyes was seeing is the bullet on it's flight towards her.
No way could he push her out off the way in time. He knew there was one thing left that he could do, one singular thing. Throwing all the senses inside him, he dashes in front of her. In that one final moment of his life, or so he thought, he took one last gaze at the girl in front of him. The scared look plastered on her face but he knew that at least she could have another chance to live on.
All he could do in that slow sense of time was close his eyes as he awaits his faith. It felt like an eternity as he waits for the rush of pain to wash over him. He waited and waited... and waited... until at one point, finally, he could feel the bullet hitting him. However, it didn't hurt. Not one bit.
He thought maybe he was already dead, maybe the bullet killed him instantly. In that moment of acceptance, he opens his eyes thinking he would meet whatever maker brought him to this world only to suffer a terrible fate.
"Damian... open your eyes..."
He questions himself hearing Athena's soothing voice. Slowly, he opens his eyes but was perplexed by the outcome. He was looking at the floor of the same alleyway. He then looks up to see the shocked expression on Kayla's face.
"I'm not dead yet? Fuck, am I gonna bleed to death?!!" He cursed his terrible luck thinking he would die another way. Moments pass before a sudden realisation kicked in him when Athena spoke again.
"No, you're gonna live and..." Athena speaks to him before pausing.
"Huh... why?.. Did he miss?" He thought because now that his senses have returned, he didn't feel like he was dying at all.
A shivering feeling ran down his spine as he feels the chilly wind caressing his body. He looks down to see his shirt torn to pieces as his front flash bare. Caring more about his health, he ignores his shirtless state but instead checks for a bullet hole. Ultimately, it was a shocking fact but there wasn't any. He wasn't bleeding anywhere but that wasn't actually what he first noticed. He realised that his fur turned white. Pristine white unlike his deep red hide he use to have.
As he was intrigued by the weird change in his features, he felt something else. It's as if his back was heavier than before. He questions it as he turns around. Soon, a bright light suddenly enters his field of vision when he turns his head.
His eyes grew wide when he notices wings sprouting from his back. Wings that was emitting a dim white light.
"What the?!" He was shocked by the sudden turn of events but he didn't get to indulge in it for long.
The wolf terrified that Damian was still standing pulled the trigger again wanting to finish the job. Damian out of pure instinct turns his body around again so his wings was facing the wolf. He then covers his head waiting for the bullet to hit him this time around.
He felt the bullet making contact with his wings but it didn't hurt. This time, he didn't take long to open his eyes. Then, he could see the bullet next to his feet, dented with smoke coming out from it.
"Wha?" He looks to the side to check on his wings again. They were perfectly fine with not a scratch on them. He immediately figured it out. His wings was the element that saved him. They were somehow bulletproof. A symbol of strength that made Damian's confidence spike. Damian then turns around to face the wolf who was shaking in his boots.
The wolf out of fear pulls the trigger multiple times releasing multiple shots.
This time he knew what he had to do. He immediately turns around again as his wings face the wolf. The bullets hit the wings which turns out to be a futile attempt. They just bounce off as if they were hitting solid steel.
The wolf's hand was vibrating wildly as his hands give in. The gun fell to the ground, a thud follows it.
Damian turns back this time carving a serious look. He moves closer to the wolf. Somehow, the energy he was emitting was darker than what he appears as.
The wolf shaken by his intimidating presence, stumbled and landed on his back. He immediately crawls backward, his pupil shrunk. It's as if he was seeing death himself even under the ridiculous get up.
Damian then grabs the wolf's collar as his other fist suddenly lights up with red blazing flames. Damian's fangs hidden, but peeking through his mouth, and his eyes was blaring, peeking through with scorching hellfire under the foolish layer of paper bag. A devil disguised with an angel's look.
The wolf was almost crying at this point.
"P-please..." He begs Damian closing his eyes.
At this point, a feeling of déjà vu engulfs Damian. It's as if he had experienced something like this before. Yes, he had.
If he lets his anger get the better of him, the same thing would repeat itself. But, this time, his life, most importantly Kayla's life was threatened.
His mind was in utter turmoil as two sides clash. Mercy, or Vengeance.
"What are you going to do?" Athena questions with her soft voice.
He took a long time pondering on the question with his prey so easily in front of him.
"The right choice." Damian suddenly mutters before looking back at the scarred wolf. He then releases his grip but still by shoving the wolf away hard.
The wolf surprised by Damian's mercy was still afraid of him but internally grateful for not ending up 6 feet under.
"Leave... and if I ever see you again... you better hope that my mood is good!" Damian warns the wolf giving him a fierce look.
The wolf whimpers at his tone before scurrying away, leaving his unconscious comrades behind. All he cared about at that point was to get the hell away. He turns around the corner before disappearing completely hopefully this time for good.
After a while, a deep sigh escapes Damian's lips as it's all over now. Streaks of thoughts were surfacing in his brains as he was astonished by this new discovery. He looks at his body again, mesmerised by the change of colour.
"Thank you Mr!!"
Damian remembered that Kayla was still there as he tries to forget his curiousity for now. He turns to Kayla and was glad to see her okay. She might have her fur a bit shriveled here and there but at least she looks fine.
"You're okay Kayla?" He asks her as she immediately looks at him perplexed.
"H-how... do you know my name?" Kayla asks him back as it hits him like a lightning strike of utter realisations.
"Oh fuck" He curses as he realised his mistake.
"Oh, I-I... uhh... help me!!" He turns to Athena for her help.
"J-just say it's your power! That'll work!!" Athena suggest as Damian gives it a shot.
"Oh, well... It's my power. Name... Check..." Damian prays for the first time, hoping that Kayla would believe his bullshit.
"Oh... that's... interesting..." Kayla was weirded out but she bought his lie.
"I'm sorry but... you sound... familiar... do I know you from somewhere?" Kayla asks him as sweat starts to form on his and Athena's brow.
"Goddamn it!! I... uh... maybe you're imagining things... you should go see a doctor for your injuries..." Damian tries to change the topic as Kayla turns to her arm. It does have a few bruises but ultimately not something fatal.
As they were in the alley, suddenly flashes of red and blue filled the walls as sounds of sirens can be heard coming closer.
"Cops!!" I have to get out of here!!" Damian says as he immediately turns his back and use his magic to disappear. His hand was engulfed in a red energy before...
"WAIT!!!" Kayla suddenly screams his name as he froze in his steps. He turns to Kayla as she was looking at him with a curious look.
"What's your name Mr?" She ask him as Damian just stares at her. He looks down at his hand to see it still covered in red fur unlike his torso. A lightbulb was lit up in his head as he looks back at her.
"It's Red! Just Red" Damian says as the name was imprinted in her head, the name if her saviour.
"Thank you Red, for saving me!" She thanks him with a grateful smile. Damian smiles back always overjoyed to see her smiling at him.
"Let's go, Damian..." Athena reminds him as he snaps back.
"Yeah, right!" Damian then covers his hand in the same red energy. His fingers snap together as he disappears instantly.
Kayla was clenching her fist as she puts them in front of her chest as the red and blue lights came nearer. Soon, two police officers show up holding their guns as they lay eyes on Kayla and the two unconscious wolf on the ground.
"Miss? Are you okay?" The cops asks her as she nods.
"I'm fine!" She answers as one of the cops take a look at the unconscious bodies. His eyes then travels to the side to see the walls having a large crater on them.
"What happened here?" The cop thought to himself because it looks like a serious battle went on here.
After a while, a couple of ambulance and more cop cars came as the area was being investigated. Meanwhile, Kayla was sitting on the back of an ambulance truck covered in some sort of cloth for the cold.
Suddenly, a male anthro cat covered in a trench coat came with his assistant, a female canine wearing a pair of glasses, a blue vest with white shirt and a blue skirt came to her.
"Hello there miss? You're doing alright?" The male asks her as Kayla nods.
"You're lucky you know! Being able to survive three tugs holding such weapons. They're still tracking the runaway, but he couldn't be far..."
"Anyways, were the stuff you told the cops true? The person that saved you... was an 'angel'?" The male cat asks her as Kayla nods in confidence.
"Did you see his face?" The male asks him as she slightly shakes her head.
"No, he was wearing a paper bag!" Kayla explains as both of them carried a weird expression.
"A... paper bag? Are you sure miss?" The assistant voices out as Kayla responds. "Mmhmmm!!"
"A masked angel huh?" The cat states as he looks into the night sky.
"Now, where has the angel flew to?" He spoke in a soft tone as he looks at the dark sky.
"Anyways, here is my number!" The cat suddenly turn to Kayla says as his assistant gives her a card.
Kayla looks at it to see it's content.
"Mr... Frank... Cat?" She was puzzled at his name as he just chuckles.
"Well, I wasn't a guy to be mad at his mama for giving him a cheesy name..." He chuckles at her showing his fangs.
"Anyway, I'm someone trying to uncover the secrets and untold stories of the past.. and mysteries of the now. Meeting an angel will surely put more pages in my discovery! You can see my show on channel 9 by the way! Maybe it'll help the ratings out!!" The cat says as he turns around. He then starts walking away with his assistant before Kayla stood up.
"Wait, what does the angel have to do with me?" Kayla ask him.
He slightly turns to her and carves a grin.
"Oh, I have a gut feeling we'll be meeting our angel friend soon, or at least you might. Ciao!!" He waves his hand as he proceeds to walk further.
Kayla was still trying to comprehend what he meant. She then looks back at the card, flipping it over and over again before looking up into the starry night wondering where he went.
"Red..." She thought of him as a sense of gratitude filled her. She hopes she'll meet him again someday.
SOMEWHERE ON A BUILDING
"That was close!" Damian mutters as he was floating on the side of the building, panting heavily.
"Tell me about it! She's quite perceptive!" Athena points out on how Kayla almost found out.
"Anyways, we better head home. It's already night time. Your parents would be worried!" Athena adds as she looks at Damian but he didn't respond. Instead, he was just frozen in place.
"Damian?" She calls him but he was still gazing into something.
"What are you-" She turns to see what he was busy ogling at. She immediately realised what it is as her expression change.
Damian was floating in front of the building window as he just stares at his reflection. He was mesmerised by the glowing wing behind him. Pure white feathers that filled the entire wing except the edge which suddenly transitions to crimson red feathers.
His muscular torso which was covered with white fur that covered almost all of his bodies except his forearm. Suddenly, his hand reaches for the paper bag on his face as he slowly removes it. His eyes widen at the sight of his face, now covered in white fur, which wasn't lit up but had a weird aura around it. What was mostly drawing his attention was his eyes, one displaying his usual ruby eyes, another now replaced with a majestic gold colour.
He couldn't believe what he saw. His hands making it's way to his face as he touches them trying to gauge if it was real. He then transitions as he touches all over his body, admiring the colour. He suddenly stops when he heard giggling from his side. He turns to Athena who had a smile on her face.
"Now, done checking yourself out?" Athena teases him but he wasn't mad.
"It's like... looking at a different person..." Damian says as his hand touches the glass in front of him.
"Is it a good different?" She asks him as he just gazes at his face.
"I don't know, it's weird..." He responds before his eyes shifted to the wings behind him. He suddenly use his magic to float as he ascends from the building. Athena just follows him as they make their way to the roof of the building.
Damian lands as his hands stop to glow meaning he cancelled his magic. He then turns his head a little as he has his wings in his field of vision.
He then tries to focus on them, his fists clenching hard. Soon, his teeth starts gritting among themselves as he stresses his eyes. His feather moved a little as it tries to close itself but ultimately it stayed the same way.
Suddenly, he feels Athena's hands on his shoulder as he looks at her. She moves in front of him before stopping.
"Don't force them... let them flow..." Athena speaks softly as Damian tries to understand what she means.
"Close your eyes... breath in..." She continues as she closes her eyes. Her chest expanding as she took in air.
Damian does the same as he closes his eyes and takes a deep breath.
"Now, clear your mind..."
Damian empties his thoughts of excitement and curiosity but instead tries to calm himself down.
"Feel your wings as an extension to yourself. Not a tool but instead as apart of you. Feel the wind brushing off against your feathers..."
Damian then felt something cold on his back. As if his wings were being prickled by the cold wind of the night.
"Let your feathers flow with the wind. Open them, let them be free!" Athena raises her voice as Damian focuses.
He then straighten his back as his wings soon expands fully, lighting himself up like a painting.
Athena opens her eyes to see Damian's feathers caressing the wind majestically, a glow emitted from them as it shines on Damian.
She smiles before moving her mouth.
"Now, feel your feet lifted off the floor as you push the wind against your back. Bend the wind to your will and soar Damian!" She yells at him with her wings flapping free.
His eyes shot open displaying the dual coloured jewels in his eyes burning with determination. He bends down a little before his wings hammers down as he rockets towards the midnight sky. The roof flooded with a gust of wind as the concrete underneath him cracks.
Damian could feel the wind dragging his fur as he was ascending to the heavens in lightning speed. He could hear the whistling of air intruding his ears, as the sound of the wind breaking filled the sky.
He then passed a puff of cloud, piercing through them as his eyes became fogged. He pushes on not caring about his sight as he breaks through the upper layer leaving a trail of clouds under him.
Damian then stops as he was facing the towering moon in front him. The glow of the moon shining on his fur making them glisten under the midnight sky. He takes a moment to bask in the light before looking back. A wide grin grew on his face as he sees his wings flapping free.
"YEAH!!! WOOHOOO!!!!!" He screams as he flew in circles without a care in his mind. It was a feeling he never felt before even when he had levitation magic. He thrust his knees forward as he tears through the air.
He reaches his hand below him as it carves it way through the blanket of clouds under him, feeling the cold air hitting his face. He then stops when he saw something.
His eyes travel downwards to see the city being lit up like Christmas. He could see lights spreading across the city bringing the joyful mood towards him. He froze in his spot, his wings still flapping as he just admires the beauty of the city at night.
"Enjoying the view?" Athena suddenly puffs up from the clouds besides him, her wings spread as she glides besides him.
"This is amazing!!" He exclaims as the city lights was reflected in his dark iris.
"It is!" She agrees with him as she too, leisures at the sight of the still awake city.
"The wings on your back... they're gifts from Athena... gifts to help you on your way!" She points out as Damian nods at her.
"It might be the best birthday present ever... thank you!" He thanks her with a grateful smile and on behalf of Athena, she smiles back.
"You're welcome!"
"Well, we can try them out on other times. Now, let's head home. It's quite late..." Athena says to him as he realised the time.
"Oh yeah! Let's hurry, my dad's gonna be pissed!" Damian says and just before he was about to snap his fingers, Athena suddenly stops him.
"Wait!!" She screams at him.
"W-what?!" Damian asks her.
"You need to be... YOU... again!" Athena warns him as he remembers about his appearance.
"Oh yeah! Thanks for reminding me! But... how exactly?" He asks her as she just shakes her head.
"You're really hopeless!" She complains before suddenly holding out both of her hands.
"Now, take my hand!" She says as Damian held out his hand. He then places both of his hands on top of her before a red glow starts engulfing his body.
Soon, the red glow overtook him as his wings disappear and his white fur was replaced with his original colour.
"Than- WAAAA!!!!" Damian was about to thank her before he falls into the abyss of clouds. Athena just shakes her head before Damian rises back up again, using his magic.
"Welp, didn't realise that!" Damian shrugs it off as Athena just facepalms.
"Now, you can try to change back into your 'angel' form by focusing on your hands, the same when reverting back. I changed it so it'll be easier for you to switch from now on!" Athena explains as she crosses her arms.
"Neat!" Damian answers as she lightly snickers at him.
"What would you do without me?" She asks him as he shot at her.
"Hey! It's our deal remember?!!" He snarls at her as she points out a finger.
"Touché!" She says as Damian was marveling at his argument.
"Well, now let's go home!" Damian says as his hand was engulfed in his magic. A snap of his fingers sends him and Athena back as they were removed from the night sky.
This is a start. With more things to discover, Damian might just find what he's looking for. And as for Kayla, let's say that there's more that she will find as well.
