Chapter 2: Securing a Meeting

Severus I

Friday, 4 June 1976

Severus awoke at 4:45 AM. He stretched out and looked up at the ceiling from the four-poster bed, the curtains drawn and the area still under the effects of Muffliato. The aches of yesterday were still there, at least the ones that mattered. The sight of Lily walking back up the steps, leaving him at the bottom of the tower. The trudge back through the castle, all the way back into the Dungeons he called home. The sound of his housemates praising him for finally putting that Mud- for putting Lily in her place. The burn that permeated through his head, his chest, his body, as he had wept. It was one thing if it was someone else's fault… but another entirely when it was his own.

It seems I was right on the money.

Severus nearly jumped out of bed at the voice. Professor?

No, you've gone mad. Of course it's me, you dunderhead.

What you said before about hearing your voice… it's more accurate than I thought it would be.

Do you believe me to be hyperbolic?

No. Sorry. What do we do now?

If yesterday was the Defense Against the Dark Arts O.W.L., then today is the Study of Ancient Runes O.W.L. We have a free day.

Right…. So what do we do?

Study, obviously. We should go to the library after breakfast. Although, I must warn you that if you do this, I will have no recollection of today's events.

Why not?

Because in my memories, I didn't leave the dormitory until Monday morning. I was moping about Lily. Speaking of which, I'm somewhat surprised at how collected you are.

Occlumency…. Also, I think the fear of summer break and losing Lily helped with the misery part.

I see. I learned that focusing on something helped me in a similar way. I poured everything into Potions and the Dark Arts.

Not Occlumency?

No, Occlumency came later. Anyway, let us dress and go to the common room.

Severus did as he was told and took his clothes into the bathroom to change. He never liked changing around the other boys due to the scars on his body. As he was about to take off his shirt, he paused.

Please don't tell me you're uncomfortable about changing in front of yourself.

I…. Oh, right. I keep forgetting.

Remember this: when in doubt, I am you.

Severus took off his clothes, and he quickly changed.

No shower?

I showered four days ago.

A few seconds passed before Professor Snape replied, You need to shower every day.

Wouldn't that waste water?

In a magic institution where one can conjure water with Aguamenti?

Severus was about to reply, but he stopped. "Ah."

Take a shower and wash your hair. And brush your teeth, as well.

Severus did as he was told, and he let the cold water pour over him. Taking Professor Snape's advice, he washed his hair, though hesitantly.

Why hesitate?

Bad memories about getting my head wet.

I know; I was there. Occlude those memories.

Severus did as he was told once again, and he took the memories of his father forcing his head underwater and let go. Once again, there was a snap and tying, and- he felt different. Professor, do you feel different?

In what way?

Before, I could manage my emotions. But now, I feel like I can manage my memories as well. Is Occlumency really this easy?

It shouldn't be; Occlumency is one of the most difficult disciplines to study on account of having no unified discipline. Dumbledore said our souls are slowly becoming one…. Perhaps, whenever we make a connection, you subconsciously tap into my pool of knowledge?

If this is true, then training might be done before the summer break. And if so, maybe we could venture into uncharted waters?

Perhaps…. Professor Snape's voice was one in thought. Yes, that would be ideal. I want to test a theory when we enter the library. I will need you to select a book you've never touched, so that I may read it.

I don't quite understand how that works.

Your eyes are my eyes, but I have no control. However, my memory is perfect, and therefore I should be able to memorize every word on every page. And if I can project the information into your mind, or rather our mind, then you should be able to learn instantaneously.

Is that even possible? What if my mind can't handle that?

We'll start small to test the waters, but you will pick the book.

Fine…. How long do I lather for?

You should be fine now.

Severus washed the shampoo out of his hair and shut off the water, stepping out and drying himself before brushing his teeth. As he spat out the water and tooth powder, he looked at his reflection and saw that his hair was no longer greasy. This might be a problem.

In what way?

Potter and Black would have a field day if they found out I washed my hair.

I see. Have you considered… not caring about what they think?

Severus raised an eyebrow at his reflection. That's your advice?

My priority is protecting Lily at all costs. School rivalries pale in comparison.

Severus shook his head. I was led to believe you knew me.

And I was led to believe you had the fortitude to ignore Potter and his shaggy bitch.

Severus smirked.

Speaking of which, I believe you will find this next information quite useful. Potter, Black, and Pettigrew are illegal Animagi.

Severus paused as he was dressing. Illegal…?

Animagi, yes. Respectively, they are a stag, a black dog, and a brown rat. This development is very recent, and is the reason why Potter was present at Lupin's place of transformation.

So… I could get them in trouble, right? If they're breaking the law-

There are three problems. Firstly, they are not yet in their majority, and thus there is the possibility that they will not be properly punished. Secondly, Albus Dumbledore.

That's fair. And the third?

We need to maintain a low profile. Low enough not to draw suspicion. For now, until we have reached the final stages of the Dark Lord's destruction, you will need to play the part of Snivellus.

I didn't realize we became this pathetic.

Pity is irrelevant. We have spied against the Dark Lord on Dumbledore's behalf; this requires some modicum of performative skills.

Do you really think I'll just simper and cower like Pettigrew?

There was a pause. You make a fair point, but what exactly is your strategy?

Avoiding conflict at all costs.

That won't work. Somehow, during our sixth and seventh year, Potter's gang managed to find us every day for the sole purpose of hexing us, even when he was Head Boy.

Severus checked himself in the mirror, to make sure everything was in order. How the hell did Potter become Head Boy?

According to everyone, he had a sudden change of heart during sixth year, which is partially true; he developed an advanced method of concealing his actions from others, to the point where Lily agreed to date him during and after seventh year. Hence, their marriage. That being said, I suspect her attraction to Potter had started long before seventh year, possibly even before the events that transpired yesterday.

Severus stepped out of the bathroom, heading back to make his bed while his roommates slept. Part of him didn't want to believe what he was being told, and part of him even hoped he was going mad as opposed to this conversation being real. But another part, the Slytherin part, couldn't help but think there was merit to Professor Snape's words. Ever since their first year, Lily had gradually started defending the actions of Potter and his gang, with her go-to argument being 'they don't use Dark Magic'. It was a point that infuriated him to no end, not only because of how simple her worldview was regarding the subject, but also because of how stubborn she could be. And it was never something they could have a simple discussion about; it always had to be a shouting match, not that he claimed innocence.

I don't want to believe you… but I do. What's your suggestion?

Continue as you normally would, but distance yourself from your so-called Slytherin friends. Socially isolate yourself, with the exception being Dumbledore for pragmatic reasons.

But first, we need to grab his attention, don't we?

Yes. Yes, we do. Ask Professor McGonagall if you can meet with him in his office.

Why not Slughorn?

Severus was answered with silence.

right, it's Slughorn. When should we do this?

After going to the library to test my theory.

Severus nodded and headed into the common room, where he found Regulus Black reading on one of the couches. Regulus had always seemed quite similar to Lucius Malfoy in some ways; he spoke and dressed formally at all times, and he positively reeked of aristocracy and social standing. Very recently, Regulus had decided to grow his hair longer and wear it in a ponytail, a stark comparison to Lucius's stark white-blond locks.

Regulus looked up from his book and gave a curt nod and smile to Severus. "Good morning, Snape."

Severus nodded likewise. "Morning, Black."

"I take it you couldn't sleep?"

Severus nodded again.

"Neither could I. My mind is currently occupied by one of my finals. And yourself?"

"Not sure," Severus lied. "I'm not tired, so I thought it a waste of time to stay in bed."

"Well spoken," Regulus replied. "Then again, one's beauty sleep is important. You could do with some."

Severus clenched his jaw. Despite their differences, the Black brothers knew how to rile him up. He Occluded, and he replied with, "I couldn't agree more. Two hours isn't ideal for one's health."

Regulus raised an eyebrow. "Two hours? Are you alright?"

"Not particularly. Yesterday's events played a factor."

"Of course…. Potter."

"Potter."

Regulus set the book down and stood, walking around the couch. "Well, it's best not to dwell. When fighting a lion, rely on your venom. A slow victory is better than a reckless assault."

"Wise words."

"Slytherin-wise, Snape." Regulus grinned warmly.

Severus had always been unnerved by Regulus; the boy, despite being one year below him, consistently carried himself like a Head Boy, much like Lucius did when he was a prefect. If Severus thought Potter was the worst possible candidate for Head Boy, he found Regulus to be the exact opposite. He was born for it.

"I wanted to ask," Regulus said suddenly. "Are you planning anything over the summer?"

Severus was stunned by the question. And apparently, so was Professor Snape.

He never asked us this before.

What should I say?!

How should I know? Say anything.

"Originally, I was going to return home," Severus replied, Occluding. "But I want to see if Dumbledore would grant me permission to stay here."

"Really?" Regulus furrowed his brow in confusion. "Whatever for?"

You told him?! What the hell is wrong with you?!

I panicked!

We can salvage this. Just-

"Do I need a good reason to avoid the Muggle world?" Severus asked.

Regulus tilted his head in thought. "Well, I understand the sentiment, but perhaps you need a better reason than that, if you wish to convince Dumbledore."

Go along with his idea.

"Go on."

"Well, let's discuss, shall we?" Regulus gestured to the couch, and Severus followed and sat down with him. "Think of one reason, outside of the 'Muggle' angle, that you could use."

"My father." Severus barely had to think about it.

"Not fond of him?"

"An understatement," Severus replied. "Let's just say he's upset about my mother's death, and will most likely lash out at me."

"Your mother's- my condolences." Regulus's prim demeanor softened, before quickly returning to his usual self. "Yes, I imagine that would work."

"Assuming Dumbledore has done away with his obvious favoritism towards Gryffindor," Severus added. "And I can't exactly rely on Professor Slughorn to support me in this."

"There's nothing wrong with Professor Slughorn." Regulus's voice shifted, sounding more tense. "You should be grateful he even let you into the Slug Club in the first place. Do you know how particular he is about whom he invites?"

"Too well aware," Severus replied. "But you're right. That being said… I imagine I won't be in his club for long."

"If you're referring to the incident yesterday-"

"I am," Severus replied. "And knowing him, he'll cut contact with me altogether. At most, I'll be another student."

"Come now," Regulus said, putting his hand on Severus's shoulder. "He won't cast you away for a little word. You're his top student."

"But we know who his favorite is."

Regulus was silent for a moment. "I see…. Evans."

Severus nodded. "I may be his best student, but that means nothing compared to whom he likes and dislikes. I think it's safe to say that my standing is less than ideal."

"Well," Regulus replied, "I understand your concern. I will concede on this point; for a Slytherin, he's fairly tolerant of her sort."

One thing Severus appreciated about Regulus is that the latter never used profanity, especially not a word like 'Mudblood'. The younger boy found profanity to be too vulgar on the lips of the Noble House of Black, as though his state of being didn't require him to even utter the words.

"Anyway," Severus said, quickly returning to the main topic, "Slughorn isn't an option."

"What about Madam Pomfrey?"

"What do you mean?"

"Well, your visits to the Hospital Wing are well-known among the student body."

"... are they?" Severus ground out.

"I imagine you would have built some rapport with her, certainly more than anyone else since you began attending Hogwarts. And, if I assume correctly, returning to Wokekirk would be detrimental to your physical and mental health."

"Cokeworth."

"What did I say?"

"Wokekirk."

"Is it not that?"

"No."

"I see…. I might need to write another letter to Lucius." Regulus stood and briskly walked out of the common room, back into the boys' dormitory.

well, that explains a lot.

What do you mean?

Lucius never wrote to us until we had reached our majority and were living in Diagon Alley for the summer. And he seemed somewhat hostile.

You mean to say that they got the name of the town wrong?

I once knew a pureblood wizard who was perplexed by the function of a rubber duck; believe me, there are worse examples.

Severus shook his head, and he thought about Madam Poppy Pomfrey. She had always been a kind lady, but not particularly tolerant of fools. She gave him structure in his life, and she was one of the reasons he invested more time and effort into Potions, Herbology, and Care for Magical Creatures. It was important that he knew as much about ingredients as he did about brewing if he ever wanted to make something of himself. Of course, this was before his housemates had talked him into studying the Dark Arts.

Speaking with Madam Pomfrey…. that might be our way to approach.

I agree. If there's anyone who can help us, it would be her. For now, let us wait until we can have breakfast and test my theory.

Lily I

Lily was the first person downstairs and in the common room, and she was pacing back and forth while waiting for Remus. Under normal circumstances, Remus would be waiting for her, but today was the Ancient Runes O.W.L., a course she had regretted taking. Snape had tried convincing her to drop the course, but she wasn't one to quit. Fortunately, Remus was also taking Runes, so she wasn't entirely without company.

Remus was a gentle soul, and much more tolerable than the company he kept. Quiet, reserved, perceptive, he reminded her of a younger Snape, only without a penchant for escalating conflict. In fact, in that regard, Remus was the exact opposite, which was good in some instances and less than ideal in others. While effective at de-escalating a minor conflict, he was completely useless when it came to confronting people who pushed back; that was Lily's job. When it came to being prefects, Remus and Lily worked best together.

"Morning, Lily." Remus's voice was hushed as he descended the staircase to the boy's dormitory. "Sorry I'm late. I stayed up a bit too long going over the materials."

"Don't worry," Lily replied, smirking. "I can't fault you for diligence."

"So, breakfast first?"

"Let's."

Lily and Remus headed out, hurrying down the stairs of the Gryffindor Tower and out of the portrait of the Fat Lady. If not for O.W.L.s, they would have left at an earlier time to go over morning patrols, but their schedules for this week were fortunately lax. Which was a good thing for Lily, as the events of yesterday had left her in bad sorts. News of the incident between James Potter, Sirius Black, and Snivellus Snape was no secret; in fact, Lily imagined it to be near-impossible for anyone to not know what had happened.

"So," Remus said in his usual broaching tone, "I assume you want to forget about what happened yesterday?"

"Well," Lily replied curtly, "I would rather ask why you didn't come and stop your supposed friends from their usual antics."

"Believe me, I've tried-"

"Try harder, Remus," Lily said. She was growing more irritated. "If they're your friends, they'll listen to you."

"It's not simple," Remus said apologetically. "I've tried too many times. I don't have it in me to do anymore."

"So, you're giving up?"

"It's not that I'm giving up…. I just don't know how to convince them."

"If they're your friends, they understand why what they do bothers you, and they'll stop. Don't let it go on like this. Or it'll be too late." Lily's words felt bitter.

There was a pause before Remus said, "If… I understand. I know you don't want to talk about Snape, but I understand."

"This isn't about Snape," Lily replied, spitting the name out. "This is about you putting your foot down." She said no more, and she tried thinking of something else to calm herself down.

"I see," Remus said sheepishly. "I'll talk with them once Ancient Runes is done. Speaking of which, could we go to the library after breakfast?"

"I thought you were done with revision?"

"I'm still a bit nervous."

Lily smirked. "Fine. We'll go to the library."

They arrived in the Great Hall to an empty room, aside from Professor Slughorn. Slughorn was, as usual, having his fill of breakfast, as jolly and bright as always. He spotted Lily and waved over to her, calling out, "Lily! Good morning!"

"Good morning, Professor!"

"For the last time, 'Horace' is fine!" The plump man stood from his chair and deftly waddled over to Lily and Remus as they sat down. Panting somewhat, he said, "I just wanted to tell you that I'm terribly sorry for what happened yesterday at the lake."

Lily tensed up, and her mood shifted. "I see."

Slughorn must have sensed it, because he followed up by saying, "I see, I'm sorry if I upset you. Still fresh, yes?"

Lily nodded. "It's not your fault, Horace."

"As Head of Slytherin, I must insist on apologizing. Don't worry; I've spoken to Mr. Snape about his outburst."

Lily felt her breath catch as she let out a sigh. "Thank you."

Slughorn patted her on the shoulder and said, "If you're up for it, I'm having an end-of-year Slug Club dinner party. You're welcome to invite a +1, as the Muggles say."

Lily forced a smile, and she said, "I'll be there."

Pleased with himself, Slughorn waddled back to the table and continued his breakfast.

Remus said softly, "Don't force yourself. If you're still upset-"

"Remus," Lily said. It took more self-control than she thought she was capable of to not snap at him. "I'm… I'm not upset about Snape. I'm upset at James." Not entirely true, but not untrue either.

"Oh." Remus looked surprised. "I see…. I didn't realize…."

"I don't blame you," Lily said. "I haven't talked about it with anyone, not even Mary. I was done with Snape back in February." That wasn't entirely true; the conversation about the tunnel incident had been what caused Snape to shut down emotionally, and Lily had started giving up on speaking with him.

"What about?"

"You heard about him following James and Sirius into that tunnel, right?"

Remus nodded uncomfortably. For some reason, he never liked talking about the tunnel beneath the Whomping Willow.

"We had an argument, and he started getting possessive. He thought I was going to run off with James, and he said he wouldn't let me."

"Why was that brought up?"

"Well, it started with us talking about Avery and Mulciber-"

"Mulciber belongs in Azkaban for what he did to Mary," Remus interrupted.

"Believe me, I know. In any case, Snape decided to deflect and go after James and Sirius for what they were doing."

"But James and Sirius don't use Dark Magic."

"Exactly!" Lily was grateful Remus was someone she could talk to about this. He was the only one who seemed to get it. "I swear, Snape is obsessed with getting you four expelled."

"Right," Remus replied. "Well, the boys aren't exactly blameless."

"I'm not saying that at all," Lily said. "But this rivalry has to stop."

"I'll see what-" Remus stopped.

"What?"

"Snape."

Lily turned her head to face the entrance, and she froze.

Snape briskly walked to the end of the Slytherin table, the end closest to the door, and quickly took some sausage and eggs. Within a minute, he was done, taking a sip of pumpkin juice before rushing out.

"Odd." Remus was busy putting food on his plate. For someone so lean, he was eating quite a lot recently.

"Right." This wasn't normal. Usually, Snape didn't arrive without a crowd of people. It was easier for him to hide himself among their numbers, then slip out when no one noticed. But even stranger than that… "... he didn't even notice me."

"He might've been busy with something," Remus offered. "Perhaps one of his upcoming O.W.L.s?"

"He doesn't have anything today," Lily answered. "And next week, he has Potions, Care for-" She stopped herself. Snape was no longer someone she had to waste time and energy on.

Remus must have noticed what was going on, and he said, "I get it. Don't worry about him, alright? Let's just eat and head to the library."

"With the amount you eat, we'll be here for hours."

Remus grinned. "Don't worry; I'll eat less, just for you."

True to his word, Remus ate a smaller portion, and they stood and left the Great Hall as the regular breakfast crowd swarmed in. Making their way through the castle, they finally reached the Library, and Lily was pleased to find it near-empty, save for Madam Pince and…

Snape.

Lily almost turned and left, but Remus caught her arm. "Don't let him bother you," he said quietly. His hold on her was gentle, yet unmoving. "Pretend like he isn't there. Find us a table, and I'll get the books."

Lily nodded reluctantly and sat down at a table, facing Snape to keep an eye on him. It was one thing for him to change his mealtime habits, but another thing to change his studying habits as well, and of course he had to be in the Library at this particular time.

Remus returned with the books and set them down, choosing to sit next to her as opposed to across from her. He muttered, "Not exactly what I had in mind."

Lily raised her wand and cast Muffliato, and she said at a normal volume, "Look, can we study or-"

"Hold on." Remus was looking at Snape. "Does he look off to you?"

Lily turned and looked at Snape again. Snape was flipping through his book, barely staying on a single page for less than a second. He stopped after completing what she imagined was a chapter, and he sat still for a moment. Suddenly, his head jerked, and he grasped the back of his head and stared a hole through whatever was in front of him. After a few seconds, his hand lowered, and he turned back to the book, hesitant to continue reading. After taking a deep breath, he resumed, repeating the same process as before.

"That doesn't look normal," Remus commented.

"Not our problem," Lily replied, opening her book. "Maybe if he causes a scene or falls unconscious, but for now, he's not our problem." Despite what she said, what Snape was doing was unsettling, to say the least. If his appearance wasn't enough to scare people off, his behavior definitely would. Not that she had a problem with how he looked, considering she had been friends with him since before Hogwarts, but she couldn't honestly say he didn't look peculiar… although… had he washed his hair?

"Right then." Remus looked over the book she was reading, and he began reading along with her.

Careful that Remus couldn't see, Lily quickly glanced up, only to find Snape had moved on to another book, this one twice as thick as the previous one. He was repeating the same process, pausing and gripping the back of his head as though something was wrong with him. But he wasn't her business. He had chosen his way, and she had chosen hers.

And then, Snape started talking.

Lily couldn't hear what he was saying, most likely on account of his own Muffliato, but he was clearly, without question, talking to himself. If there was one thing Snape didn't do, it was talk to himself; in fact, she knew him to take pride in his ability to remain silent and still while alone, which was one of the reasons he was so hard to find when they played hide-and-seek as children.

He suddenly stopped, shutting his mouth, and he took a deep breath before continuing his silent skimming of a multitude of books. She watched as he then went through another book, and then another, repeating the same movements.

"Lily?"

Lily flinched as Remus suddenly tapped her shoulder. "Sorry, what?"

"Have you been watching him this whole time?"

Lily didn't want to answer.

"I thought I told you to ignore him?"

"Hard to do when he's talking to himself," Lily shot back.

"What?" Remus looked at Snape with Lily, and once again, Snape had started mouthing something at nothing. "... Lily, did you hex him last night?"

"What?!" Lily felt blood rush to her head as she slapped Remus's shoulder. "Don't joke about that!"

"He's very clearly not sane."

"We don't- fine, do you want to miss out on studying so we can take him to the Hospital Wing?"

"You've been telling me to take my job more seriously, so I'm going to do that… except I'm fairly certain Snape hates me."

"Right." Lily stood up, glaring at Remus. "Fine. I'll go." With that, she briskly walked over to Snape.

Severus II

Severus had just sat down in the library, at the request of Professor Snape, and he started scanning through the books he had collected. He picked one up and looked it over: a thinner book regarding Divination.

I can't believe you chose Divination….

You told me to start small.

Yes, but there's a difference between academic literature and Divination.

Fine; next time, you can pick!

With no response from the professor, Severus opened the book and began skimming, barely spending a second on each page until he had reached the end of the chapter.

Right, now you can perform your test.

Almost instantly, Severus felt a shooting pain run through his head, and he grimaced as he grasped the back of his head. He groaned in pain, thankful he had placed a Muffliato on the area around him. As the pain subsided, he went to touch the page, but hesitated.

Are you alright?

I'll be fine. I'll grow accustomed to it. Wait…. Severus realized something was off about him, but he took a deep breath before continuing to skim. I think I retained some of the knowledge you gave me. Some nonsense about inner eyes.

How specific, the professor mused.

I regret choosing this book… but I'm not backing out of it.

I hadn't realized we enjoyed self-imposed torment.

You said 'start small'. Severus finished the chapter and felt the familiar snapping and writhing in his head, and he almost shook in his seat. Why is it worse?

Is it?

Much worse. You don't feel it?

Are you feeling physical pain?

Actual physical pain, yes.

You see? Even your body is rejecting Divination.

Severus grumbled and continued the process a few more times, before pausing. "I'm confused."

About?

"Why did Regulus ask about what I was doing this summer?"

I'm not sure. He never asked about it before. Then again, we hadn't left the dormitory until Monday.

"Right. And then-"

Continue skimming. We can discuss this later.

"Fine."

Severus continued skimming and gripping the back of his head in intervals. Before he knew it, he had gotten through five books, and with each wave of pain, he realized he was aware of things he hadn't learned, albeit vaguely.

"Are you remembering all of this?"

Perfectly.

"Okay, so this works then. Do I have to continue or-"

"Snape."

Severus jerked his head from the books and froze like a deer in headlights, as the Muggle saying went. Lily was standing over him, her arms crossed and an eyebrow raised.

Oh shit.

Calm down. Occlude.

What should I say?

Anything.

"No."

No?!

As if you could think of something better!

She suspects you of madness, now.

"You're talking to yourself."

"You don't know that."

Fuck!

"What?" Lily's eyes were burning holes through the back of his skull.

Severus paused, Occluded, and said, "Sorry, I was preoccupied. Can I help you?"

"You're talking to yourself and grabbing the back of your head. Do you need to go to the Hospital Wing?"

Yes.

"... yes…." Severus was having trouble understanding what was happening. Of all the people he could have run into, she had to be the first one, apart from… the wolf sitting at the table nearby. "I-"

"Up." Lily wasn't wasting any time.

Severus quickly stood and nodded. "Right." Severus knew how most conversations went between him and Lily, and it usually ended with him speechless and her getting the final word in. He had reached the point where it was safer for him to give as short of a response as possible.

As they walked out of the Library, Severus began thinking to himself.

So about Regulus's question-

Very odd, I agree.

Severus's head snapped, and he jerked his head while raising his hand up.

Lily suddenly stopped and drew closer to him, touching the back of his head and asking, "What's wrong?"

Severus froze as he felt his face grow warm. "Headache."

"Come on, then." She drew her hand back and continued leading him.

Anyway, Regulus isn't the type to ask about that unless he was expecting something of me.

As would any Slytherin.

Right, but Regulus…. He's the Black heir. And I'm Severus Snape.

He might be inviting you to some sort of party.

Possibly, but-

The conversation ended as Lily led Severus into the Hospital Wing, and Madam Pomfrey walked over and asked, "What is it now?"

"Apparently, headaches." Lily gestured to Severus.

Severus nodded silently.

Madam Pomfrey said, "Well, I'm not sure if that warrants a visit here-"

"I also caught him gripping the back of his head in pain, multiple times, while also talking to himself."

Madam Pomfrey eyed Lily and said, "I'll thank you not to cut in when I'm assessing a patient, Miss Evans!"

"Sorry, Madam Pomfrey," Lily said sheepishly. Her fire had been quite snuffed out.

"Well then, choose a bed, Mr. Snape. Unless you'd like the usual."

"Usual is fine," Severus said, nodding as he walked over to his bed and sat down. He didn't like the fact that he had his own bed in the Hospital Wing, yet here he was, and this time not due to Potter.

… this may complicate things for us.

What do you mean?

"Right," Madam Pomfrey said. "Let me give you a once-over." She took out her wand and waved it over Severus. Severus sat awkwardly, glancing occasionally at Lily, who didn't look at him once. Madam Pomfrey stopped, and she said, "There's nothing wrong with you."

"What?!"

"There's nothing wrong with him, Miss Evans! And I'll have you keep your voice down while in a place of healing!"

"Yes, Madam Pomfrey." Without looking at Severus, Lily turned and left.

"You're free to go, Mr. Snape."

Severus nodded and stood, but he paused. "Madam Pomfrey, do you know if there's a way for me to speak to the headmaster?"

"What for? Is something wrong?"

"It has to do with the summer holiday."

"I don't see how that relates to me. Ask Professor Slughorn."

Severus paused before responding. "You heard about the lake incident, right?"

"Of course I did. What you said was needlessly cruel."

"Right." Severus felt dejected that she didn't mention Potter or Black's conduct, but he pushed the thoughts out of his head and Occluded. "What I mean to say is that Professor Slughorn doesn't seem keen on speaking with me because of it."

"Keen or not, it's his responsibility, not mine."

At that moment, something settled in Severus's head. He wasn't sure if it was Madam Pomfrey's refusal that did it, or if it was the events of yesterday from catching up with him, but he knew one thing.

Aside from the voice in his head, he was alone.

Stop feeling sorry for yourself and go to Slughorn.

Severus didn't respond.

Don't make me force my memories into your head.

Severus stood from the bed and said to Madam Pomfrey, "I'll leave you to your work then." He quickly made his way out of the Hospital Wing and down the corridor. I guess we don't have a choice. Slughorn it is.

Not ideal, but necessary.

"Snape!" Severus barely registered Lily's voice coming from behind. It seemed she had been waiting outside the Hospital Wing for him. "What's going on with you?"

Severus continued walking, focused on reaching Slughorn. I don't understand why Madam Pomfrey's acting so strangely.

It's not dissimilar to my own past. After the lake incident, she became less sympathetic. Although she wasn't as callous as she was to you; it's possible our three day stint in the dorm made us appear vulnerable enough for her to… pity us….

"Are you listening to me?!" Lily sounded irritated by Severus's lack of response as she followed close behind. "What happened?"

Great… more pity.

What else did you expect from her?

"Nothing," Severus answered, realizing he had spoken out loud.

"Nothing?! You don't get to act like a madman and expect me to believe that!"

"Believe what you want," Severus retorted, desperate for her to leave. He couldn't talk to two people at once. "You always do."

"Excuse me?!"

There's no need to lash out at her.

We need to focus on getting a meeting with Dumbledore. Isn't that our priority?

Lily outpaced Severus and blocked him from leaving. "Is this all you're planning on doing then? Ignoring me and making snide comments while you mope about?"

My priority is her.

Yeah, and look where that got you.

"Well?"

And if you carry on like this, you'll end up like me.

"I'm going to speak to Professor Slughorn," Severus replied to Lily. He figured it would be best to argue as little with himself as possible.

"And what does that have to do with your behavior?"

"I thought we weren't on speaking terms?"

"This has nothing to do with us. This is about a prefect looking out for the wellbeing of her fellow student."

"According to Madam Pomfrey, nothing's wrong with me."

You're pushing her away.

I'm aware; we need to focus on Slughorn.

"Fine. Have it your way." Lily turned and went down a different corridor.

Severus let out a sigh of relief. Good. Now we-

Something felt… off. As though something, or someone, was nearby. Approaching.

What is it?

You don't feel that?

What are you talking about?

Something's coming. Severus looked around and found an alcove off to the side, and he rushed to it, casting a Disillusionment Charm on himself, along with Muffliato.

You're being paranoid.

As Professor Snape voiced his opinion, Severus heard familiar voices echoing from down the corridor.

"... figured the carpet matches the drapes," Black barked. "Wonder if it's just as greasy?"

"Didn't think you were that curious, Padfoot." Potter feigned jealousy.

Black dry-heaved and shoved Potter back. "I'd rather take the Dementor's Kiss than find out about that!"

"I can't believe Snivvy really waited outside our common room for Evans!" Pettigrew squeaked. "Pathetic."

"You really didn't expect that?" Potter sounded confused. "I did."

"Well, now that we've vanquished our mortal foe, what's next on our to-do list?"

"Serenading Evans, naturally. Should be relatively simple."

The three boys passed Severus, and he realized his fists were clenched, his knuckles whitening under the Disillusionment Charm. Bloody Potter….

How did you know they were coming?

I didn't. I just had a feeling.

… a feeling?

Something felt off before they showed up. It…

Yes?

It felt like I knew what was going to happen before it did, even though I couldn't fully imagine it. Do you think it has to do with your memories?

No, because as I've said, I never did what we're doing now on this day.

Do you think it has something to do with… us?

Professor Snape was silent.

Professor?

I'm thinking…. It might be possible, but we would have to learn more. For now, Slughorn.

Of course.

Lily II

"Snape!" Lily rushed to follow Snape as he walked out of the Hospital Wing. She hadn't planned on waiting for him, but he happened to leave almost as soon as she had. "What's going on with you?"

Snape continued walking, as though he hadn't heard her.

Irritated, Lily asked, "Are you listening to me?! What happened?"

"Nothing."

Nothing?! "Nothing?!" Getting the truth out of Snape was like pulling teeth. "You don't get to act like a madman and expect me to believe that!"

"Believe what you want. You always do."

The defeat in his voice only served to infuriate Lily more. He has the gall to- "Excuse me?!" Lily quickly outpaced Snape and stood directly in front of him, stopping him in his tracks. "Is this all you're planning on doing then? Ignoring me and making snide comments while you mope about?"

Snape looked at her blankly, as though her voice barely registered.

"Well?"

"I'm going to speak to Professor Slughorn," Severus replied. His voice was quiet. Unsettlingly quiet.

"And what does that have to do with your behavior?"

"I thought we weren't on speaking terms?"

Typical. Leave it to him to make it about us. "This has nothing to do with us. This is about a prefect looking out for the wellbeing of her fellow student."

"According to Madam Pomfrey, nothing's wrong with me."

Lily was done. "Fine. Have it your way." She turned and swiftly walked away from Snape, leaving him to wallow in his self-pity.

I can't believe I didn't see it before. Bloody stupid girl. Lily had known for a while how everyone felt about Snape; he was quiet yet volatile, weird-looking, creepy, and always hanging around her. She had always made excuses for him; he had come from an abusive household, his parents didn't teach him about personal hygiene, he didn't have any social skills, and he just wanted to fit in. But with each passing month, since they had started attending Hogwarts, she had started believing that less and less. Rumors had spread about him and his friends, particularly about Mulciber. How Snape could possibly be friends with him was beyond her, and the idea of even associating with him was enough for her to reconsider her priorities.

What made things worse was that, as bad as Snape's friends were, he had the audacity to claim Potter, Black, Remus, and Pettigrew were even on the same level as Mulciber, and what that foul boy had done to Mary MacDonald had been 'a bit of fun'. Mary still hadn't gotten over the incident, and had gone out of her way to avoid any Slytherins. A bit of fun….

As Lily fumed about the incident, she almost ran into Remus. "Hello, Lily," Remus said, sheepishly. He staggered back a bit. "Is Snape all sorted out?"

"Yes, he's 'sorted out'. Madam Pomfrey just sent him on his merry way."

"Really?"

"Nothing was wrong with him, apparently, but I could give her a list of everything wrong off the top of my head."

"I believe you." Remus gave her a small smile. "So, Ancient Runes, then?"

Lily started. "What time is it?"

"Almost time. We should hurry."

Lily nodded, and the two rushed through the corridors, Lily panicked and Remus his usual laid-back self. It would be almost comical to describe Remus as he rushed, his demeanor not at all matching the urgency of the situation, but that was typical, even somewhat comforting in times like these. The two barely arrived on time, sat down, and prepared for the exam….

Severus III

Severus was hesitant when knocking on Professor Slughorn's door.

Don't tell me you're nervous. You insisted on coming here without distraction or delay.

I just want to get this over with.

But was it necessary for you to act that way with Lily? I think not.

I… I don't want to fight about that. Can we just speak with Slughorn?

Very well, but we will continue later on.

The door opened, and Slughorn had a neutral expression on his face. "Yes, Mr. Snape?"

Severus's relationship with Slughorn had deteriorated into ambivalence within the course of twenty-four hours, if Severus was lucky. "Professor, I was wondering if you could help me with something personal."

"We can't speak for too long," Slughorn said, ushering Severus in. "I have to start planning an end-of-the-year dinner party."

Severus was relieved to be sitting in Slughorn's office, which was a first, but now the question he dreaded asking was rearing its head in anticipation for rejection.

"So," Slughorn said, sitting down, "let me first begin by saying something. You recall our discussion yesterday, yes?"

Severus nodded silently.

"Well," he continued, "I think, for Lily's sake, it might be best if you didn't attend our next party."

I'm surprised he said it this early.

Hush, I need to focus.

"I understand," Severus said. In the past, he had mixed feelings about attending Slughorn's parties. On the one hand, Lily was guaranteed to attend. On the other hand, it was a Slug Club party, which, needless to say, wasn't what Severus had hoped for.

"Yes," Slughorn said, looking slightly surprised by Severus's calmer demeanor. "Well, good. Glad we have that sorted out. So, what was it you wished to speak to me about?"

Severus took a deep breath before beginning. "Professor, I was hoping… is there a way for me to stay at Hogwarts for the summer?"

"I'm afraid not," Slughorn said almost immediately. "No, that would be rather unorthodox, not to mention your family would- your father would object."

Tell him.

What?!

We don't have any other options, and little time.

Would you tell him?

I can't, you dunderhead!

"Mr. Snape?" Slughorn was looking at Severus with a furrowed brow. "Did you hear what I said?"

"Pardon, professor?"

"I said that Headmaster Dumbledore has obligations over the summer, so the castle will not be accessible to you."

"I see…. If you could maybe ask if I could speak to the headmaster about it-"

"I'm sorry, that's quite impossible." Slughorn looked finished with the conversation. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to start planning."

Severus stood and was led out, hearing the door shut behind him quickly.

Why didn't you tell him?

How easy would it have been for you?

'Easy'? Do we seem like the kind of person to care about 'easy'?

Severus began walking down the corridor. Doesn't matter now, does it? We need another option.

Professor Snape didn't respond for a while. Now, about Lily….

Of course, you bring that up now.

What exactly is your plan on reconciling with her?

You're the one who came back in time for her; you tell me.

I had planned on us speaking with her as soon as she approached us, which you utterly failed.

I might have done better if not for you telling me we end up killing her!

The Dark Lord kills her-

Shut up! You know exactly what I'm talking about! How did you think I would respond to a threat on her life?!

In hindsight, I should have withheld that portion until you had reconciled.

I'm glad we agree. Now, what's our next option?

Minerva.

You want to go to the Head of Gryffindor?

In my life, she became a relatively close friend.

We became friends with her?

Technically, colleagues, but she was agreeable to me.

That might be true, but keep in mind our relationship with her now….

Of course.

Severus made his way through the castle, from Slughorn's office all the way to McGonagall's office on the first floor, somewhat surprised by the lack of unwanted company. He knocked on the door, and the professor opened it.

"Can I help you, Mr. Snape?" McGonagall looked confused by his presence.

"Professor, could I speak with you for a moment? It's about the summer holiday."

"Very well, come in." McGonagall allowed Severus to enter, and he sat down at the desk as the professor took her own seat. "I'm confused as to why you are here, speaking with me about the summer holiday, and not with your Head of House."

"I've already spoken with Professor Slughorn," Severus answered, "but he was busy."

"Well, perhaps you could speak with him at a later date?"

"He's planning an end-of-the-year dinner party."

"Well…." McGonagall paused. "What is it you wish to discuss?"

"I was hoping I could stay at Hogwarts over the summer."

"I'm afraid that would have to be taken up with the headmaster."

"I know," Severus nodded. "I just thought he might be busy at the moment. If you could ask if I could speak with him-"

"I'll see what I can do," McGonagall cut in. "But I can make no promises."

"Thank you." Severus stood to leave.

"Mr. Snape."

Severus froze in place.

"I would advise you to be wary of the company you keep, lest you wish for a repeat of yesterday."

Severus was unsure how to feel about her 'advice'.

She means well.

"I'll keep that in mind, Professor," Severus said. He turned and opened the door, carefully shutting it behind him. I assume that worked?

If Dumbledore agrees, yes.

Severus thought about how the meeting could possibly go. This wasn't simply to talk about fighting against the Dark Lord to save Lily. He had to somehow convince the old wizard that his future self was inside his head.

I'm sure he'll believe you.

How?

Legilimency. I can create a room for him to enter, and the three of us can speak freely. It might be jarring, but I believe this to be the best option.

What if he doesn't take it well? What if he wants more proof?

The Pensieve. We will share one of my memories with him, something that has yet to pass. He'll have to believe us then; he'd be a fool not to.

Severus made his way back into the dungeons and entered the Slytherin common room. He found Avery and Mulciber sitting on the couches, one of them reading the day's issue of the Daily Prophet, and the other reading a book on hexes. Mulciber looked up from the book, and he called out, "Oi, Snape! Where've you been?"

"Breakfast, library, Hospital Wing, Slughorn." Severus hurried to get to the dorm, but Avery jumped in front of him.

"Hold it," Avery said, a wicked grin on his face. "Not so fast. We have something planned."

"If this involves second-years and the giant squid, I'm not interested."

"No no, that's old hat." Avery gestured to Mulciber. "Mulciber has something cooked up."

Severus sighed and walked back to the couch. "Fine, what is it?"

"What's up with you?" Mulciber didn't sound concerned: only mildly annoyed.

"Not looking forward to going home for the holiday."

"Listen, if you need one of us to pop in and get your pops to pop off-"

"Wordplay isn't appreciated at the moment, Avery." Severus ran his fingers through his hair. "I just don't want to go back. End of."

"Fine, will you at least listen to my plan?"

"By all means, tell me."

"Right, so you know I'm coming into my majority before we head back home, right?"

"Right."

"Well, I was thinking… what if I could get us some extra wands?"

Severus raised an eyebrow. "Come again?"

"Think about it; all the younger Slytherins are ready to join the cause, but they need proper practice, right? I'm thinking I could acquire some extra wands, distribute them, and then we can do some 'extracurricular activities' with them. Can't trace it back to us if they're not our wands."

"By 'extracurricular', I assume you mean something less than suitable for public viewing."

"Something like that."

"And do you believe Hogwarts isn't warded specifically to keep track of such activities?"

"We-" Mulciber stopped mid-word. He closed his mouth.

"Perhaps you should allow someone else to make plans for you," Severus said.

Mulciber glowered at Severus. "Well, why don't you come up with a better bloody idea, then?"

"I wish I could; unfortunately, I will be busy from today onward. I have O.W.L.s to study for, not to mention early preparations for N.E.W.T.s."

"Is that so?" Avery sat down next to Severus. "Regulus tells us you've been thinking about staying at Hogwarts for the holiday. Doesn't sound very likely, does it?"

"Studying at a school?"

"Staying over the holiday." Mulciber reclined on the couch. "What possible reason could you have that Dumbledore would accept?"

"I'll try pity," Severus replied. The words felt wrong on his tongue, but he needed an excuse. "Maybe something about abuse at home or battling my inner demons. The old man's soft, after all."

Mulciber shrugged. "Perhaps. A bit odd."

Severus nodded slightly. "Well, in any case, I'm going to take a nap. I didn't get much sleep last night."

"Don't tell me you were crying about that Mudblood," Avery grimaced. "And here we thought you were alright."

Severus clenched his jaw shut. "Don't be ridiculous," he ground out. "Now then, if you'll excuse me…."

Without finishing, he stood and headed into the boys' dormitory and laid down on his bed.

We can continue our lessons for a short while.

If it's all the same to you, could we leave that for tonight? I need some quiet time.

Professor Snape didn't answer immediately. Very well. I will put you to sleep, and then wake you for lunchtime.

Thank you.

However… when you awake, I want you to promise me something.

Yes?

The moment you run into Lily again… you need to try. If not for us, do it for her.

Severus didn't respond for a while. For her.

Remus I

"That wasn't too bad, was it?" Remus had piled his plate high with fish and chips. It wasn't red meat, but meat was meat for him. Something for the wolf to chew on. "Elder Futhark isn't quite my cup of tea, but I think I did relatively well."

"You've worked up an appetite," Sirius said. "Fancy sharing?"

"I'm afraid there's not much to go around," Remus mused, taking a bite.

"Where do you even put it?" Lily asked, her eyes staring at his plate.

"Well you see, Lily," Remus began, "there's a process in life that Muggles would call 'eating', where-"

"Thank you, Professor Lupin," Lily said, smirking. "I think I'm well-versed in Muggle Studies."

"I envy you," James said. "I could do with some tutoring on the subject, as a matter of fact. Fancy earning some Sickles, Evans?"

"Shut it, Potter," Lily replied, her demeanor shifting. "If you think I've forgotten what you did yesterday-"

"What- are you still on about Snivellus?" James had an incredulous look on his face. "After what he called you, he deserved every second of it. Right, Padfoot?"

"Doubly so," Sirius affirmed. "Wormtail?"

"Triply," Peter answered eagerly. "Moony?"

Remus sighed, his appetite waning. "Look, I'm trying to enjoy lunch-"

"Fine, fine," James said reluctantly. "We won't talk about it. Eat up; after that O.W.L., you deserve it."

"Thank you." Remus forced himself to eat. He found that a full stomach helped make him lethargic on the night of a full moon, and since lycanthropy accelerated his metabolism, he was never in danger of growing fat. "But can I just say-"

"Here we go again," Sirius groaned.

"Will you let me speak?" Remus sat back and looked at James and Sirius. "Listen, I understand why you do what you do, but you have to realize that this makes my job harder."

"Ignore us, then," James replied casually.

"I want to take my role seriously," Remus continued. "Why can't you respect that?"

"It's not like you chose to be a prefect," Sirius argued, taking one of Remus's chips. "You just didn't have it in you to decline the offer."

"That's not the-" Remus was dumbfounded. "I don't get either of you. Professor McGonagall's writing to our parents, and you're acting as though nothing's wrong!"

"Nothing is wrong," James answered. "We took care of a future Death Eater. Put him in his place."

At that, Lily burst out of her seat and stormed off, out of the Great Hall.

"Marvelous," Remus said, his appetite quite gone. "You have no tact, you know that?"

"It's not like she's still friends with that greasy git," Sirius replied nonchalantly. "No one would be after being called that word."

"Good riddance on her part," James said. "Now she can spend more time with people who actually care about her. Can't believe it took this long for her to see the light."

"Actually," Remus said, deciding to continue eating, "she said their friendship ended in February. At least she thinks so."

There was an uncomfortable silence, and Peter choked on some pumpkin juice.

"What?" Remus looked around. Then it hit him. "Right… that."

"How'd he even find out?" Peter asked. "It's one thing to actually find it, but how'd he get inside?"

"Must've paid attention to what we were doing," Sirius replied. "Lots of practice from stalking girls."

"He never really struck me as a stalker," Remus said.

"Not very perceptive, eh?" Sirius shook his head. "He picked it up from Mulciber, you know."

The girl sitting next to Peter, a few years younger than them, flinched at Mulciber's name. Remus turned to her and said, "Sorry, Mary."

"It's okay, Remus." Mary continued eating. She kept her eyes locked on her plate, which barely had anything.

Remus glared back at Sirius and said, "We agreed-"

"Sorry, slipped out." Sirius looked at Mary sheepishly before taking a sip from his cup. "Anyway, that must've been it."

"Odds are he won't try again," James said, smirking.

James bothered Remus for so many reasons. Sometimes, he was warm and caring towards other people; other times, he could be needlessly cruel with a smile on his face. It wasn't something Remus ever wanted to be on the receiving end of, but standing by when it happened wasn't much better. When James and Sirius had found out about his condition, they had introduced themselves into his life, with Peter tagging along. They were oddly supportive of him, particularly James, and the three had gone so far as to become Animagi, a decision Remus had fundamentally been against. It was one thing to befriend him, but another entirely to illegally perform dangerous magic so they could spend time with him. Ultimately, Remus couldn't complain, as they had already undergone the process by the time he found out; in fact, January had been the first time they had joined him in the so-called Shrieking Shack.

"Let's hope not," Remus said. He washed down a few chips with some pumpkin juice. "The last thing we need is a repeat."

Lily III

"Nothing is wrong," James answered. "We took care of a future Death Eater. Put him in his place."

Lily had had enough. She burst out of her seat and stormed off, out of the Great Hall. The last thing she needed reminding of was what Snape was. She didn't even want to think about that greasy-

Lily collided with someone as she turned the corner, and the other person staggered back a bit in shock. Regaining her bearings, Lily looked at whom she had run into and asked, "Are you alright-"

Snape.

Lily stopped mid-sentence. Snape stood there, staring at her, his eyes unfocused. He opened his mouth as if to speak, but he soon after closed it. He opened his mouth again, and this time, he asked, "Do you have time to talk?"

Lily crossed her arms, bracing herself as she felt frustration building up. "I see, so now you want to talk?"

"It…" Snape paused. "It was bad timing…. Not your fault."

"I'm well aware," Lily replied coolly. "So, what is it? What do you want?"

"Could we speak somewhere private?"

"Why not here?" Lily stood her ground. She wasn't going anywhere with him.

"I'd rather it be private," Snape answered. He wasn't even looking at her.

Lily let out a sharp sigh, and she said, "If you want to apologize for yesterday, you already know what I'm going to say."

"It's not that. It's… everything."

Lily hadn't expected that, nor did she believe it. Snape wasn't the type of person to change overnight.

"Could we please speak somewhere private?" While his face was completely expressionless, his eyes told a different story. Desperation. At least Snape was in proper form today.

"If I agree, will you promise never to speak to me again?"

"I can't promise that," Snape replied quickly.

"Fine." Lily raised an eyebrow. "Will you promise not to visit me during the summer holiday?"

Snape nodded. "I promise."

Lily nodded. At least he would keep distance from her. "Where do you want to go?"

"How about…" Snape stared off for a moment, his eyes glazing over. He suddenly looked at her and continued, "How about one of the private labs?"

The idea of sneaking off with Snape to a private lab sounded… gross. "Do I look like I want to be caught sneaking off with you to a place like that?"

"What about the Owlery?"

Lily thought about it. At least it was relatively more public. "Fine. But not now. Let's meet tomorrow."

Snape's eyes lit up, and Lily swore he let out a quiet sigh of relief. He nodded and said, "Right. Tomorrow. How about… when would be a good time?"

"The least bad time would be in the evening. I have to send some letters anyway." She could've sent Mary to do it, but it was better to get closure as well. Two birds with one stone.

Snape nodded. "Okay. Tomorrow evening. 7:00?"

"7:30."

"7:30." Snape stood there awkwardly, his eyes glazing over once more, before nodding and leaving her standing there.

Lily wasn't sure what to think, apart from the dread she had regarding the meeting. Snape was the last person she wanted to speak with, especially considering yesterday's events. She might have even preferred speaking with Mulciber- no, that was pushing it. She would want to speak with Snape to the same degree as she would want to speak with Mulciber, but for entirely different reasons. Mulciber was, without question, a predator, a pervert, and a Death Eater in the making. Snape, on the other hand, was once her best friend, her mentor, and… a Death Eater in the making. While she expected Mulciber to be an awful excuse for a human being, she had expected Snape to choose her instead of his Slytherin friends, instead of Dark Magic, and instead of his bigoted views on blood purity.

It was fairly obvious to Lily that Snape… but then again, why did he want to speak with her? 'Everything'. What did that even mean? Logically, Lily could figure out that it had to be related to their relationship, especially regarding what he had done, but at the same time… wouldn't he just start apologizing then and there? He had done so outside of Gryffindor Tower, which was a fairly public place. And to be perfectly honest, she wasn't sure if he even knew what he should be apologizing for. With such a word as 'everything', he could mean 'anything'.

Pushing it out of her head, Lily continued off to see Professor Slughorn. She needed some sort of distraction, and if Slughorn was having that dinner party, she could at least help plan it. Arriving outside his office, she knocked.

"Lily!" Slughorn recognized her before he had even opened the door. "Lovely to see you! How was your Ancient Runes O.W.L.?"

"I think it went well," Lily answered, forcing a smile. "I was wondering if you needed help planning the party?"

"Of course!" Slughorn gestured for Lily to enter, and she obliged. "Yes, I was thinking of inviting some past Slug Club members to meet some of our newer members. Tea?"

"Thank you." Lily sat down as Slughorn quickly prepared a cup. "Who did you have in mind?"

"Well, there's obviously Damocles. You know, he's become quite the potioneer these days. I've heard rumors that he's developing some sort of cure for lycanthropy! Marvelous, isn't it?"

"Splendid!" Lily remembered Damocles Belby, a Ravenclaw only a few years older than her. She had met him during her first Slug Club party, and she and Sev- She stopped herself, realizing that particular memory was tainted now. "That would be wonderful."

"Indeed!" Slughorn sat down, setting her cup of tea before her as he sipped his own. "Then, there's also Lucius. I don't believe you've met him. Lucius Malfoy? He was in his final year when you arrived."

Malfoy. Snape had known Malfoy better than she had, but she had a good idea of what sort of person he was, if his family connections were anything to go by. "I haven't met him too many times."

"Right," Slughorn nodded. "Mr. Snape would know him better. Speaking of which, I realize this is a sensitive topic…."

"It's alright." It wasn't.

"Well, Mr. Snape has elected not to come to this upcoming party."

Lily wasn't sure how to respond, aside from "I see." Snape had been eager to talk to her today, despite his earlier dismissal of her presence. And now, he had agreed to skip this upcoming party, despite knowing Lily would attend.

"Yes, we both agreed it was best for him to distance himself a bit, considering- in any event, it's all sorted out." Slughorn took another sip.

"Prof- Horace?"

"Yes, Lily?"

"Earlier today, Snape was in the Hospital Wing, and when I asked him what was wrong, he ignored me and insisted on speaking with you. What did he want to speak to you about?"

"I'm afraid that's between him and myself." Slughorn sounded apologetic, but there was a hint of hesitance in his voice. "If you wish to find out, I'm afraid he would be the one to tell you. You must understand."

"Of course," Lily said, nodding. "Well… on an unrelated note, how about we start with hors d'oeuvres?"

Regulus I

Wednesday, 2 June 1976

To Regulus Arcturus Black,

Narcissa tells me you have been doing well, according to your previous letter. By her account, you have been an upstanding model for the Noble House of Black, as well as an ideal candidate for the position of Prefect. I am certain you will be granted the position, as I am sure Professor Slughorn favors you above your immediate peers.

Regarding our Head of House, I have wished to inquire about your suggestion for an end-of-the-year dinner party, specifically in reference to the invitation of former members. I believe this would be a perfect opportunity for me to meet the future of our world, as I am sure Slughorn would only settle for our best and brightest. Of course, some members may be of lesser pedigree, but I am sure that, in time, such things will correct themselves.

For some time, I have been attempting to contact our mutual acquaintance: one Severus Snape. It has been too long since I have last spoken to him, and any letter or parcel I have attempted to send to the address you have provided has only returned to me. Perhaps you could broach that topic to find Snape's new address? Under normal circumstances, I would have written to him personally regarding this issue; however, due to outside factors, this has been impossible.

Regards,
Lucius Malfoy

To Lucius Malfoy

Cousin Cissy is too kind in her praise of me, and you are fortunate to have her as your wife. But she is correct, in that I believe Professor Slughorn is planning on appointing me with the duty of Prefect. Considering my other peers, the candidacy naturally falls to me.

It would seem our suggestion has been approved, although a date is to be determined. I have no doubt that Damocles Belby will be invited back, if the rumors are to be believed. I am aware of your position regarding Mr. Belby, but I hope this will not dissuade you from attending. It would be good to see you soon. I was wondering if perhaps we could meet at Hogsmeade sometime prior to the party? The time and day, should you agree, would be your decision.

Regarding Snape, it would appear that his residence is located in Cokeworth, and not Wokekirk as we had once believed. I must admit that the misunderstanding amuses me, as I hope it amuses you as well. In any event, I have not yet broached the topic of inviting him to your home; this morning, he claimed to have had poor sleep, and I imagine he was not quite lucid enough for such a topic. He is of a mind, for some reason, to remain at Hogwarts over the summer holiday, an idea I find inconceivable. His excuse, the excuse he plans on using with the headmaster, is related to his homelife. During this portion of the conversation, he revealed that his mother had passed away; I believe he is still in the process of grieving, and so it may prove to our advantage to provide support, however we can.

Regards,
Regulus Arcturus Black
