Chapter 3: Remembering the Past

Rapunzel's POV

I watched almost helplessly as Cassandra came running at me with a sword ready to swing. I shielded myself with my arms as the sword came down. But then there was nothing. I looked to see Merida had blocked the blow with her own sword.

"Now what do you think you are doing?" Merida asked as she stared angrily at Cassandra.

"Taking my revenge out on the one person I ever considered a best friend," Cassandra said as she pushed harder.

Merida laughed. "Well, if you want to get to my best friend, you're going to have to get through me."

Elinor walked up.

"Cassandra, put the sword away, now."

Just then, the soldiers grabbed her and pulled her away.

Hiccup stepped forward.

"I'm confused. What is going on?"

Cassandra glared at me. "Ask her what happened when she got back to Corona for that year-long break you took."

The others stared at me, confused.

"Rapunzel, what is she talking about?"

I sighed. "It was so long ago."

The Dark Kingdom

Rapunzel's POV

I stared at Cassandra as she was now. A being of the Moonstone. And what she had told me, that she was the daughter of Gothel, was as unexpected as her taking the stone.

"Cass, we're friends. In fact, being Gothel's daughter, that makes us closer than friends, that makes us sisters."

Cassandra laughed. "Sisters?! My own mother chose you over me! My whole life, I've been cast aside for you! No more!"

Just then, the door at the other end of the room opened, revealing Lance, Adira, and Max.

"So, what did we miss?" Lance loudly asked.

"Lance, not now," Eugene said quietly.

"Cassandra, please. Let me help you." I said as I walked closer.

"Stay back!" Cassandra ordered, causing stones to pop out at me. I ignored them and stood my ground.

"Cassandra, you've got to give me the moonstone. It is too dangerous. The whole world is at stake."

"I said STAY BACK!" Cassandra sent more stones at me, causing me to get flung back.

Eugene helped me up, then looked at Cassandra. "Cassandra!"

Pascal squeaked angrily at her too.

As Cassandra started to look like she was panicking, Adira leaped into action. She ran at Cassandra, drawing her sword, slicing through the black rock to get to her. She jumped up and attacked Cassandra from above.

Cassandra brought up two rocks to protect her, but Adira cut through those. She then pinned Cassandra against the wall.

"Release the Moonstone, short hair. You don't know what you're dealing with."

"Neither do you," Cassandra replied.

Cassandra then released a blast that caused Adira to fly back, smacking right into a black rock.

"Adira!" Lance called out and ran over to her. "Breath easy, your Lance is here."

Adira's sword went flying into the air. When it came down, Cassandra grabbed it, causing it to bind with her.

Cassandra then started to run for the door. Eugene got up.

"Oh no, you don't!" Eugene said as he went to go stop her.

"Eugene, no!"

Cassandra used the rock to knock him aside. She then ran out of the room

"Cassandra, wait!" I said as I followed her.

I came out into the hallway to see her running away.

"CASS!"

She stopped. I looked for inner strength to do what had to be done.

This has to stop now
Whatever it is that you're going through
We'll fix it together, me and you
Just like we've always done

No! This has to stop now
This thing where you think that you've been my friend
And don't even hear how you condescend
The way you've always done

Cassandra, listen

I'm listening

I know it isn't true

Isn't it?

Just look into my eyes now

Well?

I know you feel it too

Perhaps I do

Cassandra, listen

I'm listening

I swear it's not too late
So, before another line gets crossed
And everything we've had is lost
Just... wait

I slowly reached for the stone.

"Wait?"

No, I won't wait

Cassandra then summoned her rocks to block me from getting to her

"Cass!" I said as I watched the stones close off the path to her. I looked through the gap as I watched her run away.

I started to snake through the stones, trying to get to her, letting her voice guide and motivate me.

There's a line between the winners and the losers
There's a line between the chosen and the rest
And I've done the best I could
But I've always known just where we stood
Me here with the luckless
You there with the blessed

And that line between the beggars and the choosers
Is a line you've never let me quite ignore
How I've tried to jump that great divide
But I've never got the chances you were given

You don't know how much I've been denied
Well, I'm not being patient anymore

She opened the front doors of the castle as I ran to catch up to her.

I'm crossing the line!
And I'm done holding back
So, look out, clear the track
It's my turn!

I'm taking what's mine!
Every drop, every smidge
If I'm burning a bridge
Let it burn
But I'm crossing the line!

She then jumped into a canyon and started to create a bridge across it. I jumped on it and followed.

And for us, if we're over
That's fine
I'm crossing the line

She drew her sword and went to slice the bride, cutting my access off to her.

It was as if time froze. I knew I had to do something. Anything. If Cassandra were to take this power to Corona and destroy that kingdom, then what would stop her from destroying Dunbrock, or Arendelle, or Berk. Or if she paired up with the Sinister Three.

So, I did what I had to do. I summoned a light blade and threw it at the sword.

The light blade hit the sword out of Cassandra's hands. It landed on the blue rocks and slid away from her.

"What? How did you...?" She said as she watched the light blade dissipate.

"I guess I should tell you where I was for the six months that I was gone when I was first found. You see, I joined the Big Four. And a very wise old man taught me how to do that little trick." I said as I walked towards her.

"No, stay back." She said as she backed away.

"QUIET!" I yelled. "I heard why you are angry. Now you listen. I can't let you leave here with that Moonstone."

Cassandra looked confused. "Why not?"

I summoned two small light blades. "Because of Gothel."

She looked around wildly, continuing to back away. "What do you mean?"

"I took an oath to protect the Kingdoms from all threats. Gothel has joined forces with two men named Pitch Black and Drago Bludvist. I can't let the power of the Moonstone get in their hands."

Cassandra was now against the wall, with the sword at her feet. I stepped forward and extended my hand. "So, for the safety of the Kingdoms, I'm going to ask you to give me the Moonstone."

Cassandra looked at the sword and laughed. "Never."

She then stepped on the handle and grabbed it.

"So be it."

We fought. It killed me to have to fight one of my closest friends. But I had to uphold my oath.

I went to stab at her. The light blade went for the Moonstone. It pierced it clean through.

A ball of energy started to arise. Like when I touched the stones before.

"Raps!" Cassandra yelled as the ball got bigger.

I summoned my hair to protect me. I felt the force of the blast hit against my hair. Then it was quiet.

I unraveled my hair to see Cassandra on her hands and knees. Her hair was black again.

"Cass!"

She looked up at me. I stared into her eyes in shock. Her eyes were still blue.

"Oh, Cass."

"Rapunzel. I'm so sorry. I don't know what came over me."

"Cass, listen very carefully. Try to summon the black rocks."

"What...?"

"Just do it!"

Cassandra nodded. She reached forward with her hand and tried.

Tears came to my eyes when a Black rock appeared where she pointed.

"So what? I still have some of the moonstone in me. That's good, right?"

"No, it's not."

Cassandra looked at me confused. "What do you mean?"

"I'm sorry Cass, but you can't come back with us."

Cassandra looked at me with shock. "What do you mean?"

"As I said. I made an oath to protect the Kingdoms at all costs. You still have the Moonstone power. You're still a threat."

Cassandra started to cry. "But... but... but I don't have all of it. Please, Raps. Forgive me!"

"I do forgive you, but I can't let you come back. So, by the authority of Corona, and the Big Six, I banish you from the Kingdoms, under pain of forever imprisonment."

I went to turn away. I looked back at her as she broke down sobbing. "I'm so sorry," I whispered. I then walked back to Eugene and the others.

Dragon's Edge

Rapunzel's POV

"So, we came back to Corona without her," I said as I finished the story.

My friends looked shocked at what they heard.

"And why didn't you tell us before?" Elsa asked.

I sighed. "It was one of my biggest regrets."

Hiccup walked up to me and hugged me.

"You had to make the tough call. I understand that more than most." He let me go and looked me in the eyes. "And I would have done the same thing."

"What!?"

We looked at Cassandra, looking shocked.

"You agree with her! Well, let me tell you what happened next! I had to wander that barren wasteland for months! No food or water! I finally made it to the ocean where I fainted! That's when the wing maidens found me and brought me to their island!"

"So, you're a Wing Maiden?" Hiccup asked.

"YES! See the baby dragon on my back!" She asked as she turned around to show the dragon on her back.

"So, then..."

"ENOUGH!" Elinor finally said. "We can discuss the details later. Men, escort the general back to her quarters and keep her there until further notice!"

Two soldiers walked up to Cassandra and grabbed her arms. She pulled them away.

"I know the way to my quarters." She said. The baby dragon then spread its wings and she flew away.

"Oh, Finally," Elinor said as she turned to us. "Now, you six have some catching up to do. Take as much time as you need. We'll assemble in the war room, whenever you're ready."

"Absolutely, Your majesty." Hiccup said.

Elinor laughed. "Oh please. No future son in law will call me that. Call me Elinor."

She then walked away with Merida by her side. I sighed and walked over to my mom and Eugene.
