(Chapter 37: It's a big web out there)
Jaune could remember back when he was still a little kid that he wanted to be a hero. He imagined himself dressed up in his cool costume flying around the kingdom, saving people from trouble and getting recognized for his actions.
Imitation is a form of flattery, something that Jaune knows more so than others.
Jaune did become a hero, just like the people from TV and in comics, but living the fantasy gave Jaune answers why no one decided to be a superhero.
Or to be more precise, a superhero from said TV and comics.
Jaune gets punched, kicked, shot, stabbed, crushed, fight killers, psychos, assassins, and even monsters on a daily basis. All of these were outcomes that Jaune experienced firsthand when donning the mask and becoming Spider-Man.
In his head, he knew that if he became a Huntsman, then he would be prepared for all of those situations. But things are different, he was different, and he knows that there are things out there that can't be stopped by normal means.
Yet, it seems that he forgot once more that heroes have admirers, and some admirers show their way of respect by imitating their heroes.
"So, this is happening soon, right?" Jaune asked Ruby, who both were walking alongside her team as they were passing by other students that were heading to missions given to them by the staff of Beacon. "You and your team going out on a field mission?"
"Yeah!" Ruby gave Jaune a wide smile. "This is one of the coolest things about being in Beacon! I never really did this when I was at Signal, so this will be exciting!"
"I'm happy for you, Ruby." Looking towards the students. Jaune could see that some were wearing their combat clothing as well as holding their weapons. "Some must be leaving now."
"Those are some of the upperclassmen," Explained Weiss. "Some of them are actually coming back from-oh! Speaking about upperclassmen, I see a team we know coming this way right now!"
Weiss and the rest of her team walked ahead of Jaune and went to four students that he can tell was their seniors.
The first one Jaune noticed is a large imposing figure on a male student that wore green robes and some plate armor placed around his shoulder and legs. Another thing that was just as large and intimidating as he was is the sword strapped to his back.
The next one Jaune sees is another male, only this time, he could see that the second male was around the same height as him. He was slim, but still showed muscle, dark skin, red hair, but the most noticeable thing was that his eyes were pure white letting Jaune know that he was possibly blind.
"Coco! Glad you and your team are back from your mission!" Ruby greeted her seniors.
"Glad to be back," Coco, a girl who wore a blend of military and fashion like it was normal, flicked a strand of hair away from her shades. "One more day outside and I would have straight up killed everything in my path just to get back to my room."
"I'm starting to notice you guys have been getting more and more missions." Weiss said to Coco. "We don't even see some of the staff too."
Coco let out a sigh and lowered her shoulders like she let go of some heavy weight she was carrying.
"Yeah, we have been getting more field missions lately. It's mostly just taking down small groups of Grimm that have been heading to isolated villages."
'Grimm attacking villages?' Concern wormed inside Jaunes head as he began to worry about his family living in Ansel. 'Dad and my sisters protect our village, but I hope they haven't got an increase in Grimm.'
Looking behind her juniors, the girl wearing the beret lowered her sunglasses and arched an eyebrow at the fifth person who looked to be not a student. "Who's this guy? Is he one of you girls' boyfriend?"
"Nope." Yang said without hesitation.
"No." Weiss said with the same gusto.
"You serious?" Jaune didn't even have to look to know who that was.
'Seriously!?' Jaune cried inside his head. 'At least act like your embarrassed or hesitate to answer the question!? There's only so much I can take, you know!'
"Pfff!" Ruby uncontrollably let out a sharp outtake of breath. "Why did you change the conversation to that topic, Coco!?"
'Thank you, Ruby!' The blond reporter smiled a bit. 'As least you understand my plight!'
"One out of four, huh," Shaking her head, Coco looked at Jaune like he lost some major battle. "Don't beat yourself up, some huntresses know that they got it going on and leaves them with some high standards that some guys can't really reach. Anyway, as you already know, my name is Coco, leader of team CVFY."
Coco lifted up a fist next to her head and used her thumb to point at her teammates.
"The tall, buff, and definitely pure genetics is Yatsuhashi. Don't be scared to talk to him, he's actually one of the biggest softies out there, but at total monster when he really needs to in a fight."
"It is a pleasure to meet a friend to our juniors." Yatsuhashi greeted Jaune by giving a small bow.
"Fox over there," She was now talking to the second male on her team. "Is blind. Duh. Yet, out of everyone in our group, Fox's the best CQC fighter in our class and he can take down an Ursa before it can lift a paw."
"…" The one known as Fox stared at Jaune with his unflinching gaze before closing them and nodding his head at the boy.
"Finally, our last member is-not with us right now, what the hell." As if just realizing their short one member, Coco reached for her scroll. "I hope she's not planning to start taking random picture again."
Seeing as they were finding their teammate, Jaune looked around in a different direction and caught a familiar face coming through the crowd.
"Sorry, Coco, I was just looking through my photos and realized you guys started to move." A faunus with bunny ears apologized to Coco. "Nice see you guys here too!"
"Likewise, Velvet!" Ruby was the first in her team to talk. "By the way, I have someone here that I like you to meet. His name is-"
"Jaune!" Velvet smiled at her fellow photographer and walked past Ruby and her team. "It's so good to see you again!"
"Velvet!" Jaune couldn't help but laugh at how much a coincidence it was to meet Velvet. Especially when her team seems to be in friends with Ruby's team. "I'm happy to see you too! You did say you were a student here in Beacon, but what were the chances that you were friends with the people I was hired to interview?"
"Interview?" Velvet tilted her head that made her bunny ears slightly droop.
"Oh, right, I got to explain some things before you get even more confused. So, I was going to a café where my boss…"
It seemed as the two spoke, they drifted away from the rest of their friends. With Ruby being the one to say what's on everyone's mind.
"What just happened?"
'They sure talk a lot together.' Was one of the many thoughts her mind was swirling inside her head as she and the rest of her friends followed behind Jaune and Velvet. 'I mean, me and Jaune talk a lot about comics, gadgets, heroes, and other things, but never about stuff like taking pictures.'
Jaune and Velvet talked for what seemed like hours as both were showing their interest involving photography. Jaune showed her pictures of some nice pictures Ruby and her team and even some amazing shots with Spider-Man stopping some crime.
Velvet on the other hand….
"That's some nice… blurry trees." Jaune tried his best to complement what was supposed to be a pretty photo of the Forever Falls forest. However, it just showed a blurred image of red.
"I know it's not my best, I was running when I took that picture." She scratched her head in embarrassment, the bunny ears twitched from the head scratch. "The sun was shining down in a perfect angle and the tress wasn't disturbed by the Grimm, so I just thought it would be a great opportunity."
"Forever Falls," Jaune could only imagine how beautiful the forest looked just beyond the walls of Vale. "I only see those in geographic magazines. To see them in person and to snap a pic would be something I would want to do someday."
"Maybe when there isn't an increase of Grimm, Jaune." She frowned. "It's beginning to get harder and harder to get good pictures when I'm on field missions now that they are starting to increase in numbers."
"Then taking pictures of the forest are even more important." Though the photo Velvet took was lackluster and amateurish, Jaune could only feel a bit jealous knowing Velvet saw the real deal. "You saw how beautiful the forest of Forever Falls was, even took a picture before fighting Grimm. You're making memories of places not a lot of people could do without risking their lives. To fight Grimm and also preserving the forest from anymore harm, I expect no less from a skilled huntress."
"Huntress-in-training, Jaune," For some reason, Velvet couldn't help but laugh at knowing she wasn't alone when it comes to taking pictures. "And maybe when things cool down over there, you can go and see with your own eyes how breathtaking it is."
"Will you tag along with me? I lived in a village before, but even I get lost sometimes..."
Seeing them exchanging cameras, showing each other their pictures, and even a few times where their faces got too close made Ruby feel like her stomach was twisting.
'Jaune and I met outside of Beacon and became fast friends. I guess the same goes to Velvet too, but for how long?'
"…" As Ruby continued to stare at them, she did not notice her older sister walking beside her with a look that was a fusion of Cheshire cat and a Beowolf.
"Ooh~! Is that a look of jealously I see on your face, Ruby~?" Yang teased. She made sure she wasn't loud enough for Velvet and Jaune to hear her conversation with Ruby. "Don't be surprised about this development, little sis. It's always the wallflower type that tends to pique a girl's interest!"
Ruby wanted to make a rebuttal about why she was looking at the two in front of her, only to make incomprehensible words from her mouth.
"Waah! Aah!" Ruby was also feeling heat beginning to build up in her face that made her arms flail around.
"Hey, hey, you don't need to push her buttons so harshly." Coco stepped in and patted ruby's shoulder. "Let the girl have some time to take a few breaths. Afterall, I think she just now bore witness to a rival!"
Hearing Coco's statement instantly made Yang cover her mouth as she started to squeal in a muffled tone.
"A rival, Ruby! And it's not about fighting during Miss Goodwitch's class! You know what this means?"
"I don't want to know, but I feel like I have no-"
"You got to step up and start making your move! Let Vel know you're interested in Jaune before things get super awkward!" To make thing even more absurd, Yang started to punch the air as if she was getting ready for a fight. "As a huntress, you not only have to learn how to fight Grimm, but also the battlefield of love!"
"Y-Yang!" Ruby was beginning to feel steam coming out of her ears. "Are you even hearing what you're saying right now!?"
"Heh," Seeming to want to join in on this drama fueled conversation, Coco pushed her sunglasses up to cover her eyes and smirked. "Sorry to break it to you both, but my girl Vel has a way higher chance at making Mr. Popular her personal carrot."
"No, no, no," Yang wagged her finger at Coco, grabbed Ruby's face, and shoved her little sister close to Coco. "You see this face? This face has already captivated golden boy over there, so all Ruby has to do is just walk over to him, wink, whisper sweet nothings in his ear, and it'll all be over!"
'You make it sound like it's so easy!' As much as she hated to admit it, Ruby didn't full disagree to what her sister was saying. 'What am I even thinking!? Like heck I'm going to do what Yang says! She doesn't even do any of the things she's spouting to Coco! Yang is just as lost as me when it comes to getting a boyfriend!'
Going back to Velvet and Jaune, the two were casually talking among each other for some odd reason Velvet began to walk a little bit closer to Jaune.
"Velvet?" He noticed her odd movement. "What's wrong?"
"No-I mean, yes." She gave up with explaining and just lifted a finger at a group of four boys who were walking towards them. "The one leading the other three is Cardin Winchester. Not too long ago, my team and I had a little bout about how Cardin's team was acting which led to a… disagreement and one thing led to another and…"
Jaune saw that this Cardin Winchester, a boy that looked like a carbon copy of Flash, just made one glance at Velvet and looked like he was about to have his eye pop out of his sockets!
Not just him either, but the other boys on his team began to look like they were caught in front of a firing squad.
'Why are they so scared?' Looking between Velvet and Cardin, Jaune began to see why. 'She isn't scared or shy, she's just embarrassed! What the heck did her team do to them?'
Without saying a word, Cardin moved his head signaling his teammates to walk past Velvet and Jaune with a little bit more pep in their step.
"There a bit humbler about how to treat others now."
"You don't say?" A sweat ran down Jaune's head. "If you mean by them being humble, does that mean they were bullies?"
"Just Cardin, the other guys are more like sheep following the crowd. I feel sorry for them, but I guess my sympathy was a sign as weakness to have Cardin an excuse to try and bully me."
Saying it outloud made Velvet even more embarrassed as her ears started to twitch.
"Ugh! It sounds so bad saying how me, a second year, was getting picked on by a freshman! Anyway, it was ok for me to get picked on, but soon Cardin started to try and pick fights with Blake who was standing up for me."
"Blake tried to stop Cardin's bullying?" Said Jaune in surprise.
"Her and her friends, one in particular was fond of crippling their legs though. I didn't want it to make them fight one another, so I decided that it was time to just stop Cardin and his team once and for all."
"Your team basically beaten up his team, right?"
"We're teens with cool powers, but there's still a pecking order."
"Tell me about it." Hearing how Velvet dealt with her bullies, made Jaune respect her even more with how she stopped Cardin. 'This place has such great people here. I hope someday I can have a team that has my back when I'm in trouble.'
"Hey, Ruby! How's it going over there at Beacon?" Jaune asked through his scroll. "Good luck on your mission! I bet you're going to pass it with flying colors!"
"Yeah, we were already expecting a mission to do regular Grimm slaying, but this one is really special." Ruby said enthusiastically on the other side of the call. "We're already on route to the location and we were told that as soon as our feet hit the ground, we can't use our scrolls. I'm not sure when we will use them again, but I'm really excited that me and my team are doing our first mission!"
"I'm glad you feel that way, Ruby." And he wasn't lying either, Ruby and her teammates have been quite antsy being cooped up in Beacon for so long, their mistake may have started to lower to obscurity, but that was only due to another problem taking its place as the White Fang now starting to show more frequently.
'I'm glad Blake is out of Vale for a bit. I swear, if she hears more news about the White Fang I feel like she'll jump out of whatever aircraft she's in and come running back here.'
"I'll see you when you get back, then." Jaune was about to hang up, but stopped when he remembered another important matter to discuss. "By the way! I want to let you be the first to know that I finished my article and my boss approves!"
"You're done already? That's great, Jaune!"
"Yeah, but it has to go through some other revamps my boss has in mind first, I'm sure by the time you and your team gets back, it'll be released to the public."
"Thanks for letting me know, Jaune, I'll let the other know as well." Jaune could hear some grinding noises coming from the background of where Ruby was. "The bullhead is starting to land. You take care, Jaune. We'll talk later, bye!"
"Bye, Ruby!" Ending the call, Jaune put back his scroll and went back to business. "Now, what was I doing again? Oh yeah, taking pictures for the Bugle."
With team RWBY not available for a couple of days, Mr. Jameson assigned the Arc to take photos during a press conference with one of the council's representatives.
The event was being held within a conference hall that was discussing the sudden resurgence of White Fang activity. After the incident with the docks and Spider-Man's intervention, many people hoped that they would no longer feel threatened by these terrorists.
But for some reason, they started to become more and more frequent, like they were just biding their time for something that could give them the push they need to make their stay in Vale permanent.
"Unrest is starting to show," The photographer of the Bugle used his camera to zoom in on some people waving signs of White Fang and even Spider-Man symbols. Jaune could see some more people starting to crowd the entrance, only to have the police barricading them away. "Whatever they're talking about inside, it better be some good news."
'Since I'm also a reporter for the Bugle, I should probably get a bit closer when they finally open the doors.'
Pushing away some of the other reporters, Jaune was now right between the barricades keeping everyone away and the police on stand by for any chaos to arise.
"And not a moment too soon." Aiming his camera, he could see the doors opening and the saw one of the members of the council step out with his entourage of bodyguards. "Now, let's hear what you've got to say."
The man stepped on to the podium that was set up hours ago for his speech for all the public to hear. Many cameramen were flashing their cameras to take shot of the spectacle and were stopped when the councilman started to speak.
"As you all know, reports have shown a drastic increase in White Fang activity within our walls."
A unanimous sound of heckling and booing from the people was their answer to the news.
"People of Vale," He raised an arm to calm down the masses "Rest assured our fine police force and skilled Huntsmen will not rest to drive such toxic hatred away from our homes."
Everyone seemed to be convinced about his promise for security through police and Huntsmen, but a few voices started to say otherwise.
"What are ya'talkin about?!" Someone within the crowd screamed. "They don't do jack!"
"We don't feel safe here anymore!"
"When are we really going to be safe from the White Fang!?"
Sensing that he was losing the crowd, the politician tried his best to sway the audience back to his favor.
"Calm yourselves, everyone! The council has your best interest at heart. However, the more pressing matter is also the Grimm. Huntsmen are being sent 24/7 to eliminate these threats before these monsters even have a chance to enter Vale."
"Spider-Man is the only one who actually cares about what's happening to us!"
As soon as that sentence was said, a domino effect erupted that cause everyone to chant Spider-Man's name.
"Spider-Man!"
"Spider-Man!"
"Spider-Man!"
Jaune would feel flattered for such positive reinforcement from such praise, yet he could not help but feel the back of his skull starting to tingle.
'Danger! But where is it coming from?'
As Jaune was looking around the dense crowd, one of the bodyguards that was close to the politician pulled out his firearm and held the councilman at gunpoint.
Someone screamed that made a chain reaction for everyone to panic when they saw that there was someone brandishing a gun, causing the citizens to flee and having the police spring into action to save the important figure.
They would also soon become hostages when half of their own brothers in blue turned their weapons against their fellow officers.
"Don't make any sudden movements," Said the bodyguard who is revealed to be part of the White Fang when he placed the signature mask on his face. "We don't want to harm you… not yet at least."
"H-how did you bypass security!?"
"It's easy to slip by unnoticed, especially when you can just pay the right people."
'All the guards can't do anything, not unless they plan to die alongside the chairmen.' Seeing as the crowd was still running away, Jaune found the perfect chance to flee. 'I can find somewhere secluded and get into my costume. Hope everyone likes the classics, cause the good'ol red and blues are back!'
Just when he thought he was clear to run, some of the White Fang that were disguised as officers barred his escape.
"You, human with the camera! Get on stage and start taking pictures! We want everyone to know who did this and how easy it will be to kill the rest of these pigs!"
"Hey!" One of the Fang terrorists shouted in offense.
"Shut up, I meant figuratively! Now, get the hell over here or I'm going or else they'll be two bodies on the news rather than one!"
'Welp, there goes my exit stage.' Having a gun barrel poking at his back, Jaune walked up stage and raised his camera to take the in the gory scene about to unfold. 'Looks like I need to do this the Jaune Arc way! When he pulls the trigger, I'll throw my camera catching him by surprise, grab the chairmen, and run before they even fire a single round.'
"Now then," Looking eye to eye to the petrified human, the leader of the group pointed his gun at the man's forehead. "For the sake of our future. You shall be one of the many necessary sacrifices!"
Time started to slow down in Jaune's perspective. He could see the sweat and even tears rolling down the innocent man's face, the trigger being slowly squeezed, and as Jaune was about to take action…
(TWIP—TWIP)
Someone else beat him to it.
A web glob encased around the firearm before it could fire with another web shot covering the terrorist's eyes blinding him. "AAH! One of you help me get this off! It's Spider-Man, he's here!"
Landing on stage, the so-called Spider-Man started to disarm the gunmen leaving Jaune to get the hostage to safety.
'That's not Spider-Man,' As Jaune escorted the man away from the danger, he looked over his shoulder to catch glimpses of Spider-Man wreck the White Fang. 'I'm Spider-Man!'
"We'll be safe here, sir," Jaune said hiding behind some cars that were parked a safe distance away from the fighting. "We can stay low for help to arrive."
"Thank you, young man!" He said in gratitude.
"We're not in the clear just yet," Raising his head a bit to look over the car they were using as cover, Jaune could still see the fake Spider-Man fighting. "There might be some people injured when everyone tried to run away. I'll go see if there are other people that needs help."
"Are you mad!? You'll be killed!"
"So will any other bystanders too. If you have a scroll then call for more backup, you're part of the council, so I'm sure they'll send more to save you."
Jaune was just about to leave, only to have his arm grabbed by the adult he saved.
"You're a braver man than I. When the cops and Huntsmen arrive, I'll make sure to tell them a hero saved my life."
'Woah, someone actually thinks I'm a hero, and I'm not even wearing my costume!'
"Thanks for the compliment, but," Counting a few seconds to make sure he was ok to move, Jaune jumped over the hood of the car and ran back into the fray. "I'm just doing my responsibility!"
After staying in this world for some time, he could finally put a name to the group of people with masks he's been fighting for some time now.
'They call themselves the White Fang, a group of Faunus fighting for their people and how humans have been treating them worse than second class citizens. And here I thought my world had it rough.'
Spider-Man shot a web string at one of the bad guys who was about to fire his rifle and pulled it out of his hands. Not soon after he did so, the web head jumped into the air as he dodged another Fang member attempting to strike him from behind.
As he sailed in the air, he used the rifle that was on the other end of the web line as a weapon hitting both opponents to the ground. Still in the air, the man from another world made sure they stayed on the ground by encasing them in a web string net.
'That should be most of them,' Unfortunately he was wrong when he felt a tingling sensation at the back of his neck. 'Or not.'
Some of the Fang tried to rush the hero, only to find out that Spider-Man easily took them down while talking.
"You'd think in a world with literal monsters from hell that we-" He stopped when a Fang terrorist shot at Spider-Man's head point black with a pistol. His reflexes able to doge the round sailing past him and then headbutted the shooter knocking hm out cold. "Drop the superiority issues and help our fellow man, but NOOOOO! It's all 'filthy humans', 'Human scum', and-"
"Die, human sympathizer!"
"Ugh!" Flipping into the air to avoid another attack, the spider used his hands to stand on top of the attacker's head. "You guys hate humans so much, but yeah, I agree that we can suck sometimes."
He sighed, using his legs on the White Fang thug, Spider-Man performed a flying leg lock and as the body hit concrete the hero kicked the Faunus leaving him out cold.
'Spider-sense still tingling.'
Looking at where he felt the sudden tingle, Spider-Man saw a blond teen helping someone who looked to be limping.
"I got you, don't push yourself too hard." Said the blond boy.
Watching the blond help the injured civilian, Spider-Man felt the back of his head tingle even more when the danger revealed itself to be another terrorist making a mad rush to escape.
"Get out of my way, human!" He screamed as he was mere seconds away from shoving them both to the ground.
Before the criminal could escape, both Spider-Man and the blond-haired boy somehow had the same decision to stop him.
Spider-Man ejected a web line at the runaway's back and just when he pulled the strong back, the same boy who was helping another person kicked the back of the killer's legs.
"Waah!" Landing on his back, he groaned from the sudden pain and tried to get back up. "Oof!"
"You're not going anywhere." Said the teen and immediately kicked the White Fang member's head that was enough to knock him out cold.
With no other signs of White Fang activity and the convenient sound of sirens coming from the distance. Spider-Man having no other reasons to stay any longer, departed from the scene before anyone could stop him.
'I sure am lucky I was in the right place at the right time.' He thought to himself as he swung from building to building. 'It seems I have to be more cautious when I go out at night when I go deeper into this kingdom. Maybe I can finally meet the other…'
The pulse at the back of his head made Spider-Man stop his web swinging and land abruptly on top of one of Vale's tallest towers.
'I'm in danger again? Is it one of those Huntsmen I've heard so much about?'
Looking around, he could not see any danger around him.
'Whoever it is, they must be cautious or just waiting for an opening. Maybe if I can just speed up when I web swing, I can lose whoever is following me.'
About to walk to the edge of the roof to jump off, Spider-Man's body soon took over a mind of its own and leaped back to avoid a projectile attack.
"Huh?" Looking at what tried to hit him, Spider-Man immediately took a defensive stance. "Webs, and not just any kind. They're turning into ice!"
'And I'm 1,000% positive on who's the only one other than me who uses webs to fight.'
Hearing the sound of feet hitting the deck, the Spider-Man who was far from home didn't need to turn around to see who was behind him.
"For the record," Another Spider-Man, one who was wearing a red jumpsuit with a blue hoodie with torn sleeves spoke to his fellow web head. "I'm going to sue you for copy right infringement."
"…Huh?"
'It's like I'm seeing the costume that I had in mind to create finally becoming real. The only problem is that it looks like someone had the same idea just like me and made it before I could.'
It was not difficult for Jaune to follow this new guy after the problem the White Fang caused. Jaune just had to ditch the people he helped from the attack get medical help and soon dashed somewhere he could change into his original costume.
And now here he was, facing some other masked stranger that is using his reputation for whatever reason.
'He must be a real good faker too. The way he's laying low and his stance looks identical to how I fight that it's disturbing.'
"Well," Not wanting to keep the man from staying in that position for too long, Jaune chose to give the guy a break. "If you're worried that I was going to hit you, then sorry if I scared you. You can relax, I just want to talk."
The Spider-Man that was in front of Jaune got up from his stance, raised both arms, and placed them over his head.
"Oh boy," Not Spider-Man blew out some air though his mask. "I kind of knew I would meet you, but I didn't expect it after I just stopped White Fang from doing a public execution."
"Thank you for the help." Was Jaune's reply.
"No problem," He shrugged. "I'm just glad no one got hurt or worse. Say, where were you when all that went down? I find it hard to believe you just found me all of a sudden."
'He must be trying to figure out if I was one of the people in that rally. I need to change the subject, try to bring it back to my court.'
"And I find it hard to believe that there's another Spider-Man." This time, Jaune made sure to put more force in his voice. Even walking up to this faker where both were just a few spaces apart. "One who is clearly way too young for this kind of thing."
"Takes one to know one." Jaune wasn't sure if this kid was even taking any of this seriously, as the shorter Spider-Man raised his height by standing on his toes. "Your tough guy act maybe convincing to the crooks you fight, but I already know how this usually goes, so you can just drop the act."
"It's not an act when someone who is clearly younger than me is taking my name and painting a huge target on their back."
"Doesn't Huntsmen do the same thing? Training kids way younger than me, so they can fight monsters sounds way more dangerous than me wearing a costume taking down normal people."
"People can-" Jaune took a deep breath. 'He's just goading me to keep arguing with him. Need to focus and ask the real questions.'
"Look, I'm not sure if you're doing the whole Spider-Man thing cause you're a fan of my work-"
"Fan!?"
"But you need to stop before you attract the wrong kind of attention. If you haven't realized yet, this kingdom is having its own secret war with some shady organizations. The type you don't want to get tangled with."
"What about yo-"
"My dilemma on why I'm doing this is irrelevant right now." He stopped the faker from speaking. "I can tell you what though, your skilled and you can handle yourself in a fight. If you want to do a dangerous job, then apply to a Huntsmen school. I'm sure you'll do better than me if you go down a different road while you have the chance."
Sighing, the copycat gave out a loud sigh of frustration.
"I really did hope I could avoid meeting you as much as possible, you know. It would have been easier since I don't have to tell you something you might not want to hear."
'What is he on about?' Jaune asked himself.
"Come on, I can't be the only one who thinks this is out of the ordinary. Haven't you read any comics before?"
"Comics should not be used to real life."
Ignoring the real Spider-Man's words, the younger one kept talking.
"In every comic, a hero is somehow taken from his world to another that kind of resembles his own."
As if to prove his theory, he pointed at Jaune and then to himself.
"I'm Spider-Man, but at the same time you are too." He said as if telling Jaune some mind boggling revelation. "I'm from a different dimension!"
'….My god, this poor kid is delusional.' Jaune started to feel bad about reprimanding him now that he realized this kid was not thinking straight.
"Don't think I know what face you're making under your mask. You think I'm crazy, but I'm telling you the truth. Things would probably be easier if I just told now rather than later!"
'Need to calm him down, otherwise he would try and make a break for it.'
"Relax, I believe you."
"We both know that's not true, so how about I tell you more things that would make things easier for all this to sink in!"
Once more, the youngest vigilante on the roof pointed at Jaune.
"You're a Parker! Just like me!"
A cold chill pierced Jaune's heart when he heard the young man say that name.
"How do you know that name?"
"I told you! I'm you from a different dimension, only slightly different! I'm a Parker too! I even know about Aunt May and Uncle Be-ugh!"
Jaune's mind didn't even register what he was doing as his hand closed around the faker's costume and hoisted him in the air. Call it fear for taking over after hearing the words 'Aunt May' and 'Uncle Ben' in the same sentence, but another emotion was clearly taking the wheel at this point.
Rage.
"Listen! I don't care if you think that your me from a different universe or whatever! But if you think I'll just stand here while you bring up their names, then I promise you the next words you say regarding the Parkers will be the last thing you say when I knock you out!"
'I was so careful about hiding my identity! What's even worse is that he knows about Aunt May! That woman has suffered enough hardship because of me, and I don't want her life to be in danger if this guy knows who I really am!'
"Who are you, really!? Are you from Oscorp , did the person who made that spider the one who sent you?"
'Oscorp?! OSCORP!? Why does it have to come back to Oscorps?' He tried to get the hand off his costume. 'His grip is too tight!'
"If you're with Oscorp, I want some answers kid!"
Spider-sense flaring, Jaune released his hold on the faker when he tried to kick Jaune's head.
Landing back on his feet, the fake Spider-Man went back to a defensive pose to get ready to attack Jaune.
"Yare Yare Daze…. I started this, just wanted to talk, and you just gave me a few questions I want answered too." Spider Fake then walked sideways around his adversary to find an opening. "And here I thought we can do this the easy way by talking this out."
"Believe me," Doing the same pose, both Spider-Men stared each other down to see who will strike first. "The chance for talking was over when you brought the name of someone's family name in vain!"
Fists connected, kicks were countered, and each blow from the respective spider clashed with none gaining any ground.
'It's not helping that this guy has a reach advantage cause of his height.' The younger spider lamented. 'I usually fight guys who are slower and bigger than me, but he's just as agile as me and is even stronger too!'
Ducking under a fist, he attempted to jump back to gain some distance, however the hooded spider closed the distance again and continued to hit the faker.
'He's not giving me time to use my webs!'
Head buzzing, his arm shot up next to his head and stopped another kick that was strong enough to push him back a couple of inches.
"Sssh!" Clutching his forearm, the spider from a different home clenched his teeth to stop him from cursing. 'His hits, it's getting harder to block! Is he starting to stop pulling his punches?'
Even with a small distance between them, the spider fake used the small window to try his web shooter to slow down the other hero. Again, both seemed to copy the same idea as both spiders used their webbing to tangle one another, only for their web lines to weave and connect making them look like they were playing tug of war.
"That's some nice web weaving you got there," Spider Fake complimented the other hero. "What type of formula did you use to make the tensile so strong?"
"It's all natural." Was his only answer to him. "That's all you really need to know."
"So, it's just regular webs, huh? Good to know." Seeing this as a good time to catch him by surprise, the younger web head shouted. "Taser Webs!" Making his suit instantly send electricity through his webs, travelled to the other line, and shocked the Spider-Man of this reality.
'He may be stronger than me, but he looks like he isn't as tech savvy as I am. That means I need to pull out all the stops my suit has to offer!'
"BBBRRRRZZZZ!" Releasing his hold on the webs, Jaune did his best to shake of the attack only to have his spider sense warn him of danger. 'Can't move fast enough to get away!'
"Web Grenade!" Shouted the fake as he tossed a ball of webbing at Jaune that landed between his legs.
The object exploded and tendrils of webbing closing around the stunned hero leaving him in a giant web cocoon.
"Not done yet!" Shooting webs at the trapped spider, the other spider pulled him close and unleased a volley of punches at kicks at the cocoon and at Jaune's exposed head. Rearing his fist back for a final punch, the faker braced his legs and delivered a final punch right into the Jaune's stomach.
"Gufaaa!" All the air in Jaune's body left him after that final attack, sending him in the air and landing back on the ground no longer moving.
"Tch… got to give it to you, you're really good" The other Spider-Man said to Jaune's knocked out body. "One of the toughest I faced… If we kept up a this fight a little longer, I'm sure you would win... more reason for me to train harder when I get home. But it seems that you don't have the equipment like I do to even the odds. Sorry if it had to come to this, I hope you won't hate me when you wake up. I just need you to listen to what I have to say…"
Walking to Jaune's prone body, Spider-Man crouched next to his counterpart, and reached over to pull his mask.
"If you can't really take my words to face value, then seeing the truth will make you understand."
'I feel something touching my mask.' Deep in Jaune's mind, his spider sense was still giving him information around him even when he was knocked out. 'That guy dressed up as me. He must be removing my mask.'
Visions were rolling inside his mind about what would happen if his identity would be revealed. Would his secret life be over and would he no longer be Spider-Man? Would the fake blackmail him to not be Spider-Man anymore?
Would Aunt May be safe?
'Move.'
Underneath the cocoon web, Jaune's right index middle finger and ring finger twitched.
'You fought people way tougher than this faker! MOVE!'
Jaune's left index and ring finger twitched.
'If you don't Keep moving then your friends and Aunt May will be in danger if this guy uses your identity against you!'
Pushing his finger, Jaune was attempting to press his web shooters to dispel the net that was keeping him tapped.
'Show him why! Why you and you alone are the one and only Spider-Man!'
"Come on come off already!" The fake struggled to pull of the other Spider-Man's mask that was somehow not coming off. "How is he keeping the mask on like that? It's like I'm pulling actual skin rather than a mask."
'Is it his adhesive ability to allow his mask to stay on his face? Wait, that means…. I can do that all this time!? Great, so many face reveals could've been avoided if I knew how to do that trick.'
"One way or the other, this mask is coming off." Continuing his struggle to pull it off, he could hear a faint whisper leaving the other person.
"You… first…"
"Huh? You're still awake?" Stopping for a moment, he lowered his head to listen. "What did you say?"
"I said…" Voice starting to get louder, the real Spider-Man spoke as the webbing that was sealing him began to smoke. "YOU! FIRST!"
Smoke that was seeping from the webbing turned into flames as it consumed the webs leaving a giant ball fire. Not expecting such a thing to happen, the fake was caught off guard once more when the Spider-Man he put down broke free from the bindings and headbutted the younger spider.
"Ugh! That's smarts!" He didn't even need to touch his face to know that his nose was probably bleeding.
Focusing on his opponent getting back up, Spider-Man was about to try the same trick on him again, but was stopped as the other masked spider was fast enough to shoot a web glob.
"Dang it!" The webbing that was now covering his hand started to turn to ice. "He has ice webs?!"
'I need to break out of this and get some distance!'
(FWIP—FWIP)
"My feet! There frozen too!"
The attack didn't stop there, as the real Spider-Man continued to fire ice dust after ice dust at the faker.
(FWIP—FWIP—FWIP—FWIP—FWIP—FWIP—FWIP—FWIP—FWIP—FWIP)
"Had enough yet!?" Jaune screamed as he continued pelting the masked wannabe's body in ice with only the head being unfrozen.
Jaune fired two web lines that were on each side of the frozen spider, pulled, lifted his legs off the ground, and was catapulted feet first at the target's head.
It didn't stop there, as the force behind the kick broke the ice, sending the two off the roof and landing into some alleyway. Spider sense kicking in, the real Spider-Man was able to stop his fall by shoot a web line onto the side of a building and saved the other faker by attaching another web to his back.
"You got nice toys, but you're going to need brains and brawn if you want to copy me. You had your fun, but Vale doesn't accept no substitutes."
Pulling the faker back up, Jaune checked to see if the fake was out cold.
"He's breathing, so that's good." Hoisting him over the shoulder, the real Spider-Man climbed back up to the roof. "I should just tie you up and drop you off to the police. I wonder if there is a reward for turning in 'Spider-Man'. Does that mean I'll technically be turning myself in?"
Shaking the thought away, Spider-Man had a better idea on what to do with this so called 'Parker'.
"Ow," Eyes fluttering open, the young teen known as 'Spider-Man' winced from the lingering pain still coming from head. "That was some kick, didn't expect it to hurt that much."
'Where am I?' Moving his head, he could only see darkness. 'Am I in some kind of room?'
His question was answered when a light was turned on, making him close his eyes from the sudden flash.
"I see You're awake." Opening his eye back open, he can see the Spider-Man he was fighting before now sitting in a chair with something in his hands.
'Oh! For the love of-'
"It happened again! Waking up being tied up, my face feels like it was hit by a train, AGAIN, and now I'm in the care of some psycho who won't listen to reason!"
"Says the guy who says he's from an alternate dimension."
"Want to tell me you're blonde too!?" The orange haired boy ducks his head in shame just in time to miss Spider-Man tense up from his snide remark.
As he was looking down, the young hero did his best to struggle against the bindings.
"If you're wondering where you are right now, I'll tell you that your somewhere safe and leave it at that."
"That's not really reassuring." He replied, all the while trying to break free of his holdings.
"Trying to break free is also pointless." The young spider stopped and looked back at his captor. "The webbing I used is durable enough to hold cars and even highway bridges. And even if you do break free, then I'll just knock you down before you learn your lesson."
"I can break these webs easy!... Just have to be a bit, just a little concussed at the moment-bleh..." Rito was dead silent, as if his body was not responding before his brain finally got back in its seat. "I'm back! Sorry, happens whenever I'm hit from someone who kicks like a freight train..."
The two didn't say anything after that, they only stared at one another before finally the Spider-Man who wasn't trapped in a web lifted up the thing he was examining.
"Nice mask you made. I really like how you somehow have your lenses to move to fluidly to show actual expressions."
Realizing that his face was in the open, the young hero could only sigh in defeat.
"You...didn't try to kiss me when I wasn't awake... right?"
"Pfff!" Spider-Man sputtered air out of his mouth. "What?! God no!"
"Hmm... Either you're telling the truth or you're a tsundere..."
"I want to hit you so much right now..."
"Leaning on tsundere..."
"I don't even know what that word even means!"
"Well, now that you see my face, then you have to believe my story."
"I believe that you need mental help."
"You still don't believe me that I come from another dimension? Look at my face, dude!" He shook his head to emphasis his golden-brown eyes and orange-brown hair. "Our lives are parallel too! Bitten by a spider, getting powers, we're part of the Parker fami-"
"Your name."
"My name?"
"Tell me your name." Spider-Man asked the boy.
"You should know, our names should be similar."
"Just tell me."
"Fine, if you really want to play this game." Rolling his eyes at this charade, the unmasked Spider-Man told the other Spider-Man his name. "My name is Yūki Rito, and I've been Spider-Man for some time now in my dimension. I know the Parkers, cause my mother is their daughter, Ringo Parker, and that means in this dimension you are me."
"…" The hero just sat quietly as he ingested the information Yūki Rito gave him. "Liar."
"I told you that I'm-"
"Peter Parker was the name of Aunt May's nephew."
"Who are you talking about?" Now, it was Rito's turn to sound confused. 'That name kind of resembles my cousin's name, Peni Parker.'
"Peter Parker died with his family in a plane crash years ago. His mother, Mary Parker, was not related to the Parkers. They had a son, not a daughter, so everything you said up to this point really doesn't hold any semblance of you being related to the Parkers."
"What?! I mean, what you said about the plane incident holds true, but Mary? My Uncle Richard married an Asian woman named Hana... And you mean that my mother wasn't born... And the one who was supposed to be counterpart, this... 'Peter Parker'... is dead? This is getting too heavy for my brain to handle..."
"Mine lost it when I saw you, so…." He just shrugged.
"But if the Parker heir is actually dead." Unable to comprehend what was told of him, Rito stared at the now unknown Spider-Man. His eyes could faintly see the unknown visage of eyes behind the mask. "Then who are you if you're not a Parker?"
"Spider-Man." Getting up from where he was sitting, he walked right up to Rito stared deep into his eyes. "The real Spider-Man, the only Spider-Man and I want to know the truth. So, Rito, tell me, what's your real origin story?"
This chapter was kind of a challenge to make. I had to make sure I had to capture Magister Of Oz's character in to this chapter and even massaged him his thoughts and ideas that were also added in the chapter.
It was really fun to work this, to have different authors put in both different OC's into one big crossover. Not to mention, with Rito be from Earth and Jaune from Remnant, there of course will be some language barriers.
For me, it was having to try and have both Spider-Men fight without having to use their hero names, so I had Rito as the 'faker' and had used Jaune's name rather then using Spider-Man. I did use Rito as Spider-Man, because I didn't want to reveal his name until after he was defeated and unmasked.
The crossover will also be taking place alongside The Breach Arc of Vol 2. Meaning the big Grimm invasion that will cause way more carnage then the Paladin incident.
White Fang is starting to get back in attacks, but that is due to you know who finally showing up in Vale, making it known that I will have Jaune face Adam in the near future. Vale's council trying to calm the crowd from the Grimm getting more aggressive, only to have the people still put more faith in Spider-Man. All of these will be brought in to the end of the arc with many changes coming for Jaune as he faces the aftermath.
Both Spiders will also be able to work alongside each other and I will also have Jaune go to Rito's dimension too.
Speaking about dimensions, Jaune being skeptical and also thinking Rito is crazy is very reasonable. I mean, would you believe someone who says he was you who is from a different universe? I think not, but don't worry, it will be cleared up and Jaune will believe Rito in the next chapter.
If you haven't checked out Magister of Oz, then I suggest you check his story to get up to date about his Spider-Man. Make sure you like, fav, and leave a comment about his work too!
Here is the Link to his story: s/12979893/1/Friendly-neighborhood-trouble
I'm also happy to push this before I leave for my trip and will get ready tp publish another chapter in January!
Don't forget to also check my Beta who helped check my chapter and to also leave a like, fav, and any comment on his work as well! Thank you.
Before I forget, I also hope you like this expanded AU as an Omake, cause this idea was swirling in my head for some time and I hope to one day expand it.
[Omake: It came from Mt Glenn]
Let's fast forward a bit, to a time a few days after Jaune said his goodbye to Ruby as her team left for her mission.
Let's also be in a different place too. Where there is only just one Spider-Man and no other carbine copy. Said Spider-Man was just laying on some construction crane, relaxing as he waited for any accident that he could prevent.
His time off was interrupted when his spider sense gave him a sharp headache that was telling him that the danger it was warning him was severe.
"I don't really need a spider sense to know where the danger is coming from." Getting up on his feet, he could see a large smoke trail coming from Vale's main square. "Need to get over there to help anyone who could be injured."
Diving off the crane, Spider-Man started to swing towards the smoke where he began to see people running for their lives in terror.
One of the bystanders was clutching his neck that sputtered blood. The man fell down on his face and Spider-Man stopped his travel to help the man up. Looking at the injured civilian closer, the spider could see that he was losing blood and that the injury look like he was bitten.
"Spider-Man," He said weakly. "You need to stop them."
"Stop who?"
"The White Fang. It was so sudden," He groaned as he clutched his wound. "A train burst through the city square. The Fang came out, starting attacking people, and then Grimm began to come out of the hole too!"
The man soon started to cough up blood, his skin beginning to lose it's color, and veins started to spread throughout his wound.
"I need to get you to a hospital! That wound looks pretty bad!"
"No!" He stopped Spider-Man. "It's too late for me! You need to stop the White Fang from spreading this!"
"Spreading? Your saying they have a chemical weapon?"
"No! It's something worse! But, what's even worse is the Huntresses!"
"Huntresses?"
"Four of them, one in particular had a red cape."
'Ruby, oh no...' This was now getting dire, as Spider-Man now had to make sure he had to stop the White Fang from spreading some chemical weapon with Ruby and her team stuck in the middle of it all. "If they're also in trouble, I'll make sure I'll help them."
"No!" Using his last ounce of strength, the dying man pulled Spider-Man close as he talked. "You need to be careful around them! They're the ones… who… started…"
He couldn't finish as he died in Spider-Man's arms.
Not even five seconds for Spider-Man to mourn a loss of life, Spider-Man soon heard gunfire coming from where the attack started. Laying the man on the ground with his hands over his chest, Spider-Man raced to where all the action was taking place.
Not once looking back as the body of the man who died began to rise back up.
"My god, it's worse than I thought." Spider-Man was looking at the carnage of what the White Fang brought into Vale. A large train emerged out of the ground giving Grimm the needed entrance for them to start killing people. He did not see any White Fang or any of Ruby's teammates, just corpses that was left by the grimm and even some who looked to be half eaten.
"I need to find any survivors!"
Starting his search, all Spider-Man could see were dead bodies littering the streets. He did find some blood trails leading to no bodies, but so far, he only saw death and despair.
"Is that Ruby?" Landing on the side of a building complex, he could see Ruby just standing in the middle of the street with some officers surrounding her. "Vale officers, why are they just standing there?"
Spider-Man's eyes widened when the cops pulled out their weapons at Ruby.
"Ruby!" Taking action, the spider swung low enough to grab Ruby in time before the cops could fire at her. Landing softly onto another building, Spider-Man climbed up to the top and placed Ruby back on her feet where she quickly closed the gap between the two and wrapped her arms around his neck. "Woah! Um, thank you for the hug, but we need to stop the Grimm and the White Fang!"
"Jaune."
Spider-Man stood still as Ruby whispered his real name close to his ear.
"I think you might have the wrong person." He lied.
"No, I know it's you, Jaune." Out of nowhere, Ruby sniffed deeply into the crook of his neck. "Your scent, Jaune. I know it's you under that mask, because I know your smell."
'I was hoping my reveal would be more dramatic and impactful. Instead, I got called out being Spider-Man due to me selling… yeah, that's very impactful.'
"Jaune~!" Ruby once more sniffled in Jaune and clutched even harder around his neck as if letting go would mean she would lose him. "You smell~!"
"Come one, Ruby!" Giving up on even lying, Jaune tried to pull her off only to just give up when she wasn't budging. "We need to start helping people get to a safe area. Where is your team anyway? We need all the help we can get."
"But, Jaune, your smell… It's…"
"Ruby?" Jaune started to feel something damp coming from his neck. "Are you crying?"
"Jaune," Ruby soon started to shake, making Jaune hug her to calm her down. "You-"
"Everything is going to be ok, Ruby." He reassured her.
"You smell…"
"I know, I know that I smell. I'll make ser to shower after all this is over."
"You smell…" Lifting her head up from Jaune's neck, her hood was lifted by the gust of wind to show that half of her face was bloody and scarred. Her mouth being the most sinister as her lips were salivating like she was looking at some hunk of meat…. Spider-Man.
"So, good~!
A different place that houses a different type of horror. This… is the RWBY Zombieverse. Enjoy.
