(Chapter 38: Breached. Part 1)
"Ok, Spider-Man." Rito took a deep breath and exhaled. "Let's just backtrack here."
The younger hero made a face like he swallowed something weird.
"Can I give you a nickname? It's weird for me talking to someone who is also Spider-Man." The teen said.
"Where are you from?" Jaune interrogated, not humoring the orange-haired imposter. "Why are you impersonating me?"
"Does Scarlet Spider sound good?" Rito ignored him as he made a suggestion. "What about Spider-Bite?"
"How do you know the Parkers? Have you been spying on them?"
"Why would I spy on someone who's my aunt? She's family!"
"Never mind," Having enough of these games, the hooded spider turned his back on Rito. "You're not helping your case if you dodge my question. At this point, I'll just send you to the poli-"
"Earth! I came from planet earth!" Rito gave up on his attempts to ease the mood and decided to cut to the chase.
"Planet Earth?"Jaune looked back at him in confusion.
"Yes! It's like Remnant, but at the same time, different!" Having his captors' full attention, Rito began to explain how his home planet was like Jaune's, only instead of monsters such as the Grimm as enemies, his world had enemies among its people. Rather than judging a man by having animal traits, Rito's world judged a man by his skin color and country of origin. Dust, the main source known throughout Remnant, never existed on Earth and instead 'Fossil Fuel' was the go-to for natural resource that was sought after even going so far as to go to war, too.
As for the Huntsmen, they are replaced by people like Jaune who acquired powers either by accident or by design and use their powers to fight for good or to gain power to rule.
A world that never has Dust, yet still functions better than Remnant?
People judged for having a different skin color rather than animal attributes?
A place where Huntsmen, a person like Ruby and her team, who fight Grimm to save what little left of humanity, does not exist?
Can a place like that really be true? That was but few of the questions asked in Jaune's head. To prove even more of his story, Rito asked him a request.
"Free me and I'll show you undeniable proof that I'm from a different dimension." The orange-haired teen looks at him with a hard stare.
"No." Jaune denied his request as soon as the words left the younger boy's mouth.
"You gave that answer way too soon! At least try and pretend you're considering it!" Rito cried out. "If you can't trust me, then trust the words passed down within the Parker household."
Jaune didn't need him to say them when he keeps repeating them every time in his head.
'I'm already starting to believe this guy's crackpot idea just cause he knows Uncle Ben's advice.' Even if he attempts to escape, Jaune was certain he can stop him. Weighing the options, the hooded hero walked over to a desk that was placed on the far end of the darkly lit room, opened a drawer, and pulled out a vial of some strange substance.
Walking back to Rito, he opened the vial, poured it on the webbing, and in seconds, the web soon dissolved and left the boy to fall on the ground.
"Web solvent." Rito immediately realized what the strange substance was. "Need to remember that when I get back to my world."
"Now that you're free, you said you were about to show me something?" Jaune asked the younger teen while keeping his guards up.
Lifting himself back on his feet, Rito reached for something that was underneath the fabric of his costume and showed Jaune a small rectangular block with what appears to have small bat-like wings.
"This is a Cellphone, and in your world, this could be comparable to a Scroll." He then split the rectangular cellphone to show the inside of the device.
The bottom half had buttons that had numbers that resemble the same set up as his scroll. The upper half was a screen that showed an image of Rito as well as another girl with bright pink hair and emerald eyes who were smiling in the captured picture.
Bringing the screen to his face, Rito gave a nostalgic look at it before looking at Jaune.
"I know I said my name before, but let me tell you about my story and how it all changed when this girl appeared in my life."
The boy takes a deep breath and began to talk.
After one heck of an explanation, they both started to tell each other their story about what made them Spider-Man now with the misunderstanding between them gone, as well as talking about their circumstances such as Jaune telling Rito about the reason he was in Vale and living with Aunt May while Rito explained how he came to Remnant.
"...and I've been living here in Vale ever since." Rito finishes.
"That's…. wow, um..." Jaune, who was no longer in his costume and was in his civilian clothes, lifted his head and stared at the night sky. "I can't really wrap my head around this. Another world and people from outer space too! And here I thought space travel was impossible."
"You think my world is crazy? I'm still thinking that I'm in some kind of dream world! I mean, come on, you guys have a broken moon hanging over you guys!" Rito flailed his arms at the bright broken moon above them. "Seriously, I'm surprised it didn't go all Majora's mask on this place already!"
"Who's Majora?" The tall blond tilted his head at his new friend's words. "You've been saying some stuff that's going over my head."
"Ugh! I hate making reverences that no one understands! Guess this is just one of the many downsides of getting isekai'd."
"What isek-you know what? Never mind, you don't have to tell me. We're almost here anyway."
Walking down the darkly lit sidewalk, Jaune and Rito stopped in front of a house.
"Can't believe you used your school's storage room to hold me prisoner."
Jaune shrugged. "I don't have a Spider lair, and It would be kind of stupid if I used Aunt May's attic to hold you for questioning. I'm just glad that the janitor didn't replace the locks with new ones."
'Makes it easy for me to use the room when I got a copy of the key from the original janitor'
It was a bit strange for Jaune to receive such an item from the elderly man who gave him a pep talk not too long ago. Why give the key to a complete stranger? Should a janitor even be allowed to give school property away so flippantly? Those were things Jaune asked the old man who, in the end, still handed the key to Jaune, patted his shoulder, smiled, and then left him standing alone.
The kind cleaning staff member was never seen again.
At first, Jaune was tempted to give it back to him when he got the chance, sadly a new janitor arrived and the nice old man that helped him left Midtown Highschool.
'I wonder where he is? I asked the new janitor and he doesn't know either. Even the staff who hired him forgot the guy and no information that has a scroll number to reach him. I hope he's doing okay.'
"Truth be told, I never use that room for much other than using it as just a spare to have some alone time with my thoughts. Other than that," Jaune shrugged. "I got nothing else for it."
"Do you always use school property for stuff like this?" Rito asked the older teen. "You know? Superhero business, I mean."
"Just like what any other on the budget hero would do." The tall blond waved his wrists above his head. "As much as I like having webs shoot out my wrists. I still use my chemistry class tools to make a variety of webs. That stuff that was able to hold you together earlier? Made that concoction and some other stuff thanks to my school."
'Technically I kind of don't need to use the school's chem lab anymore. Since Whitley and my new position at work is giving me more income. Hmm... maybe I can use that spare room for something after all. Only problem I see if I do is the new janitor. Nah, forget it, I'll think about it later.'
"You have a class that has chemicals that let you shoot ice webs?" The shorter teen gave Jaune a flat stare. "You've been using Dust, right? I'm still a bit lost on the full use of those things, but it is this world's equivalent to fossil fuel in my world."
"Yeah, you're right that I use Dust to give some of my webs different elements." Jaune knocked a few times on the door. "We'll talk more after this."
Hearing the sound of footsteps coming from inside, Aunt May opened the door for them.
"Jaune!" She smiled at her only tenant before looking over at another person standing next to him. "And you brought a guest."
'She sounds disappointed.' Thought Jaune. 'I'm positive she would be even happier if Blake or Ruby was here standing next to me.' He deadpanned in his mind. He could see that happening from a mile away.
'Why does she sound disappointed?' Thought Rito. 'I feel like if my sister was here answering the door, she would be mad at me for bringing another stranger. She'll be even more pissed if another random girl showed up to our house.'
"Hey, Aunt May." Jaune smiles awkwardly. "I hope you don't mind setting another plate down."
'This place,' Rito's eyes scanned around the familiar yet also unfamiliar home. 'It looks exactly like I remembered it.'
The young hero could already feel the nostalgia, his mind replayed past events of old memories of his family.
Familiar faces like his sister, father, and his mother were the first things he thought of, followed by his aunt and uncle and his cousin, Peni. They were all together eating around the table.
Rito's happy memory was soon over when Aunt May-no. He stopped that line of thought before it even finishes.
'Not my Aunt May.' Rito reminded himself. One of the things different was when he entered the house, he saw several photos of her family arranged around the living room.
One of them showed her with her husband as well as another with her and another couple holding a young baby.
'That must be Peter Parker.' He thought. 'Guess Jaune would be a bit skeptical about my story with how the family shown in the picture is different from my story. Still, it feels weird knowing that this dimension I had a different name… and that I never got to live past an infant.'
Getting back into reality and away from such morbid thoughts, Rito started to listen to the two talking about how he was Jaune's best friend from his home village, Ansel.
"Rito is in Vale to enroll in a school," Jaune explained to Aunt May. "I saw him across the street, we've been talking about how our lives are and we kind of lost track of time."
"A friend from your home village?" Her eyes landed on the boy who tried his best to make himself feel at home, but once he caught her gaze, he soon started to fidget in his seat. "That's wonderful to hear, Jaune! You never really told me you had friends at Ansel. I hope Jaune showed you around his school! He's a really smart boy and already has a scholarship to go to college at Atlas!"
'I don't even know where Ansel is.' The young teen remained silent as he had no idea what half of what she was talking about.
Looking at Jaune, the blond made a small wave of his hand to have Rito play along with the charade.
"Yeah," He weakly nodded his head until he started to play the role as Jaune's childhood friend more seriously. "Yeah! Totally! I've known Jaune since we were in preschool! I remember one time in school, when we brought our parents to class, his dad was there telling the other kids his job as a simple farm-."
"Huntsmen."
"Huntsmen!" Rito quickly corrected himself, his hand banging the kitchen table. "Jaune's dad is a huntsman and a great one at that! And a strong one too! I mean, he has to since he's the only one in the fam-"
"Half."
"Half of Jaune's family are Huntsmen!" At this point, Rito was worried if his acting would cause Mrs. Parker to get suspicious of him, only to see that she was not calling him out on any of his blunders, even going so far and say that she looked like he was believing him. 'Either I'm great at lying or she is way too trusting.'
"But his dad is the strongest in the family and he takes charge in protecting the village." He looked at Jaune who nodded his head to tell Rito he was right. "Yup! I knew Jaune most of my life! Him and his fou-"
"Seven."
"Seven! Seven?" Rito stopped talking and looked at Jaune to see the blond nodding his head fervently. "Seven sisters and him being the only boy in the family! I can tell you now, he always complains that he never has enough time by himself when using the bathroom, but that's a story for another time!"
The sound of laughter filled the air as Aunt May wiped a tear for hearing such a colorful tale about Rito's time hanging around the Arc household.
"You must really know a lot about Jaune's family." Aunt May started to shift from laughing to giggling while the two boys can only sigh in relief and relax. "I hope where you live is not too far, I would hate to have you walk all by yourself at night. As much as Vale looks safe, we've been having some very troubling groups starting to make people nervous about leaving their homes. Oh! That reminds me, the news about the sudden attack today!"
Rito and Jaune stopped their little victory and sat up straight when the older woman brought up the attack that transpired a couple hours ago.
"It was so sudden," She placed a hand on her chest. "Thank heavens no one got seriously hurt. I heard from the news that the police couldn't do anything with there being a hostage, but luckily Spider-Man showed up and stopped them from killing that man."
Aunt May soon gasped when she remembered another important part about today's events.
"Speaking about heroes saving the day, apparently, some bystander helped get the chairman away from all the violence and even went back to help anyone else caught in the chaos. They don't know the boy's name, but he was blond and looked around the same age as you two."
"Well, you know how people rise to the challenge," The only blond in the room waved his fork in the air. "It's good that he wasn't hurt along with everyone else. Ow! What the...?"
Jaune looked at Rito who nudged his head to tell him to shed more light about what happened.
In turn, the blond looked at the younger hero with an incredulous face, wordlessly saying "Are you serious?" to him.
Rito only nudged his head harder toward the old woman, uncaring of the fate that'll befall the blond spider if he did so.
Glaring, Jaune slowly turned his head towards Aunt May.
"About that, Aunt May... um..." Placing his utensils down, the secret hero looked at his Aunt straight in the eyes nervously. "I should probably tell you the truth of why I was kind of late."
"Explain to me why I had to tell her that I was also taken hostage and was forced to witness a murder?" Jaune glared at the younger teen.
To say that she was worried was obviously an understatement as Jaune was now in his room. His 'childhood friend' was also in the room with a sleeping bag set up at a corner near the closet given to him from Aunt May who has one for any guests that sleep over.
"She was going find out anyway! You might as well tell her before she finds out later!" Said the boy from another dimension. "Come on, man! That guy probably knows you since you're a reporter from the Bugle, so it was just a matter of time before other people who you helped today start speaking up too."
Jaune was about to argue only to stop when he saw Rito was right. Groaning, the blond teen fell on his bed and stared at the ceiling.
"Grounded by someone I'm not even related to." It wasn't technically a grounding; Aunt May simply wants to have Jaune start being more active on telling her where he will be until she feels like Jaune didn't need her constant vision. "I doubt I can just sneak out in the middle of the night; she might actually try and check up on me and I'll be in bigger trouble."
"Is it really so bad, Jaune?" Asked Rito. "Even though she isn't your real Aunt, she sure acts like you're part of her family."
Groaning again, Jaune sat up from his bed and stared out of his only window.
"Well, I can't really say that I understand all of your problems, Jaune. But you don't have to think you're alone to hold the burden of trying to be Spider-Man!"
Getting up from his nap sack, the orange-haired hero walked up to the older teen and raised his hand.
"I'll help with the load of being Spider-Man and you focus on gaining Aunt May's trust in you."
"Are you sure?" He was hesitant on shaking Rito's hand. "You have to focus on trying to get back home."
"Meh," The younger teen waved that problem off with his other hand. "I'm sure my friends are already making some machine that tracks my energy residue or something. The point is that I want to help you, from one Spider-Man to another."
Looking at the hand in front of him, Jaune grabbed it and gave a firm shake.
"Thanks, Rito!"
"No problem, I'm just doing what come natural for us." He shrugged his shoulders. "Helping people is what we do, right?"
With their agreement settled the two went to their beds and let the silence envelope the room.
"Hey, Rito?" Jaune called out his friend laying in his sleeping corner. "You still awake?"
"Hmm?" Was Rito's reply.
"I know you told me about your life back in your world, but what about here? Where do you live anyway?"
"…" The guest remained silent for a while. "...I've been living at some shelter that is pretty popular around Vale. I'll take you there so you'll know next time."
'A shelter.' Getting his answer, the blond stared up at his ceiling. 'He is younger than me and doesn't really know anyone in Vale, anyone on this planet, actually. I wonder, if it's where Aunt May works.'
"Then, maybe I can ask Aunt May to let you live here for a few days." Jaune added the word 'few' since he wasn't sure if she would be comfortable adding another person to her house.
"That would be nice." Rito said nostalgically. "Even if it's just a short while, I'm sure my friends will find me."
Rito's eyelids started to get heavy, and as his body began to relax, he uttered one last thing.
"I would really like it, living in a house that reminds me about her…about… my mom."
(Midtown High)
The next day, Jaune decided that since he introduced his 'childhood friend' to Aunt May, he should also bring him to his school to meet his friends.
"Everyone, I would like to introduce my friend from Ansel, Rito!"
Stepping aside so that the orangette can introduce himself, the first thing the spiky-haired teen did was giving them a slight bow.
"Nice to meet you all." Rito said as he straightened his back.
"It's nice to meet you too," Said Gwen, copying the gesture. "Never met someone who greets people like that. Is it common at your village, Jaune?"
"H-his family taught him a different way of meeting new people." Jaune answered quickly.
"Hey, I ain't complaining. He's way more respectful than most people I know in school, so he's alright in my book. Right, guys?" She looked back at MJ and Eddie who both nodded their heads in agreement. "So, anyway, I'm Gwen, the redhead is Mary Jane-"
"MJ for short." The redhead in the group said/interrupted
"And the taller, beefier, and also blond guy next to MJ is Eddie."
"Sup." Was the only thing Eddie said to Rito.
"We also have another person in our small group, but he isn't going to be in school till the end of the week." When Gwen was talking about that certain someone, it was Jaune's turn to take back the conversation.
"Yeah, I texted him this morning and he sent me a message about his dad wanting him to stay in their home to... 'reflect'," Jaune used both his left and right index and middle fingers to emphasize that word. "A little longer about his actions. I kind of understand Mr. Osborn's reason, I mean, Harry was the one that threw the first punch."
"Kenny seems to have brushed it off and he isn't holding any grudges." Said Eddie. "Seriously, he even told me that he doesn't hate Harry. I do have him in one of my classes after all."
"Wow, for real?" Asked Jaune in surprise.
"Honest, I think I remember Kenny telling me that he was impressed that Harry can throw a decent punch. Uh, no offense to your friend, Gwen."
"Trust me, I thought the same thing too." The girl replied.
"Does that mean Kenny won't take revenge for what Harry did?" Jaune asked Eddie hopefully.
"Revenge? I think Kenny and his friends would probably greet him like they were best buds with Harry displaying a backbone." A chuckle escaped from Eddie's mouth. "Don't make me explain this, but I think they're starting to respect Harry for what he did."
"That's… good..." Jaune really had no other words to use.
Before anyone else could start up another conversation, MJ chose the right moment to step in between the group.
"Let's talk about that later and get back at our new friend here." MJ looked at Rito and smiled. "Will you be attending school here or are you just staying in Vale to see the big city?"
"I'm actually thinking about applying for a different school." He lied, using the same lie Jaune used on Aunt May. "I already plan to go to another school somewhere else, but Jaune just wanted me to visit here to see you guys."
"Do you know the name of the school you have your eyes on?" She asked.
"It's some private school than a public one like Midtown." Rito continues the lie. "But I should probably get there now before I lose track of time. I'm sure you guys also need to watch the clock and get to 1st period."
"He's right," Looking at his scroll, Eddie showed the group that they only have 5 minutes before the morning bell rings. "Gwen and I got to go soon. Even if this is our last year as seniors, that doesn't mean we're out of the woods yet."
"Always the punctual one." Gwen rolled her eyes.
"Someone's got to be." He made a remark that resulted in Gwen giving him a jab at his shoulder.
"I'm going, too," The redhead gave the two boys a pat on the back. "It's good seeing farmboy over here having another friend from back home, but if you really want someone to take you to the cooler parts of Vale, feel free to ask me."
MJ and the group then walked away and soon disappeared when students began to flood the halls to get started on today's classes.
"You got good friends, Jaune." Rito said and if Jaune noticed how Rito spoke, he could have sworn the spiky-haired teen sounded jealous for some reason. "Kind of wish my friends were a more down to earth as yours are."
'I do remember that Rito told me most of his friends are aliens.' Even after digesting that mind-blowing revelation about space and the multiverse, it was still hard for Jaune to comprehend it all. "Thanks, though technically speaking, not all my friends are here."
"Oh right, Osborn." That cheery and positive vibe Rito had, had died and is replaced by disdain. "Just my luck, to be in a world that is considered a fantasy in mine, and to have Osborn here, too. Swear to god, I feel like someone is making a joke about all this."
"Hey! You can't say that about Harry or his father like that!" Jaune defended his friend's family. "You may have an Osborn that's evil in your world, but they're different here, so I would appreciate it if you drop any suspicions about them."
Seeing that he made Jaune upset, Rito chose to not talk further about the Osborn in this dimension and focus back on his task for today.
"See you at Aunt May's house, Jaune." His mouth looked like it was sucking on a lemon. "And I'm sorry about me projecting my dislike for Osborn."
"It's fine," The blond accepted the younger teen's apology easily. "For now, you can just head to the public library if you need more information about Remnant."
"Will do!" Taking this as his sign to leave, Rito gave Jaune a small wave before leaving Midtown High.
Rito walked among the masses of people as he navigated around the streets somewhere in Vale. As he did, the young hero from another world soon took a right that lead to a different street and as he passed other strangers, he saw someone not too far from where he was walking looking to be more out of place than all the other bystanders.
Slowing his pace to get more time to examine the oddity, Rito could see that the person was obviously a man with how tall and broad shouldered that was underneath the long coat he was wearing. Rito could only see the back of the man's head who was wearing a baseball cap, but moving to the right side of the man gave Rito the chance to see a new development.
'Already my morning is greeted by some stalker.' Rito already had enough time dealing with pervs and creeps back in his dimension, all were, of course, the usual trash that he was used to in Japan was now happening again with him stumbling upon this situation. 'I can only guess that the one he's following is that one with their head covered in a red scarf.'
Just as Rito thought, the one being followed was someone with a red scarf wrapped around their face that was just 30 paces away. 'And judging by how that person is wearing that scarf, I can assume that it's a woman.'
The orange-haired teen decided to follow the stalker in return, after what seems to be five minutes of walking, the girl finally stopped. She was standing there as if pondering what to do next. What was before her was just an alleyway and on her other side was a crosswalk.
'Please don't walk into an alley. Please don't walk into an alley.' Rito thought desperately.
She decided to go to the alley.
'You stood there for a couple of seconds and chose to go there!?' The orangette cried out in his mind.
Berating her poor choice for later, Rito stayed back and watched as the robed man followed after her.
'Don't have time to change over to my usual get up. Oh, well, it's not like anyone in this world knows me anyway. I just hope that things don't get too complicated for no reason, but with my luck, I feel like I'm asking for too much.'
'This spot should be good enough.' Emerald eyes scanned the narrow space that held no other witness save for herself and the one who has been tailing her. The sound of several footsteps and voices could be heard just outside the alley but the sound of one specific pair of steps was what she was paying close attention. 'I made sure to walk around the same area just to make sure I wasn't being paranoid about who was following me. Now that I'm somewhere isolated and know that it's just one person, I can handle it without having any needless people getting harmed if my would-be pursuer intends to attack me.'
Turning to face her tailer, the young woman could see the man pull something from his trench coat. Getting in her usual defensive stance, she readied herself and waited for him to show whatever weapon he was about to use.
"Finally found you." He spoke in a low tone like he was talking more to himself rather than her. "It wasn't easy tracking when you come out in the open, but I'm glad I'm the only one who knows about this."
Was he stalking her longer than she thought? Did he watched her from afar? And if so, for how long? Well, no matter, her questions will be answered once she apprehends him and turns him over to the police.
His hand pulled out something deep within his coat and just as she was getting ready, the man made a startled yelp as something collided from behind him.
"I got him! Go! Run!" Another one, a boy with bright orange spiky hair shouted as he pinned the man to the ground. "Don't worry about me! I can handle him."
Not one to always leave someone alone to fend for themselves, she was about to step in and help restrain him when she finally glanced at what the man was holding.
A camera.
Not some bladed weapon, gun, or something dangerous. Just a camera.
'Suddenly, I feel quite the fool for overthinking things.'
Not knowing how to break it to the young boy that 'saved' her, she tried her best regardless.
"Um, e-excuse me-"
"Why are you still here!?" He shouted, making her take a step back at the outburst. "I said I'll be fine! I can handle this stalker!"
"That's the thing," Seeing as it was best to come clean, she unwrapped the red scarf that hid her face, shook her head to get some loose strands of hair that fell over her shoulders, and gave him a meek smile. "He's not a stalker."
Silence stayed between them until the boy looked back up to her. His eyes, a set of bright orange, showed confusion. "...Eh?"
"If you look at his hand," He followed her advice. "He just wanted to take a picture of me."
"Of you? Why would-" Looking at her once more, the boy's face lit up at recognizing her. "Wait, aren't you one of Jaune's friends? Ms. Nikos, right?"
Now it was her time to be caught off guard at the sudden news given to her.
"Excuse me," Both the boy and Pyrrha were startled when they finally heard the man underneath Rito talk. "Since we're all clearing this misunderstanding, can you please get off me now?"
Helping the man off the ground, Rito, now feeling a bit bad about what he did, bowed his head to the man.
"I'm terribly sorry, sir!" He apologized.
"Sorry!" Pyrrha Nikos also apologized to the man.
"Wait, why are you saying sorry!?" Rito looked at the redheaded girl with incredulous face once he came up from his bow.
"Sorry!" Pyrrha apologized again. "It's a reflex."
Luckily, the man was not the spiteful type as he too felt somewhat responsible for the whole debacle. He explained that he wanted to get some photos and some questions answered by Pyrrha.
However, with how hard it was to find her at Beacon as well as the competition with other cameramen trying to do the same has made it difficult for him to do his job, which was why he dressed up, hid himself among the crowd, and followed her in hopes to finally get a chance to speak with her.
Not seeing any harm, plus also feeling some pity for the man for getting tackled by Jaune's friend, she accepted his request to answer some questions. The catch, though, was that he will not take any pictures of her, since she wished to keep her privacy.
Understanding her reasoning, the older man quickly shot out his questions and then soon left. Promising them that he will not try again at tailing her.
"I got tackled by someone who thought I was some stalker. If you ask me, I got off lightly today, but next time I might get something even more extreme if I try this again. Thank you once again, Miss Nikos!"
"No problem!" Smiling as the man left the alley, her face then changed from happy to tired. "Thank goodness that the man was reasonable. Otherwise, I wasn't sure how I was going to deal with him."
"True," Rito couldn't help but laugh at how all this started and how fast it ended. "Glad it was just some guy and not some crazy perv, though."
"I suppose you're right. Oh! Where are my manners? We've been standing here and I haven't properly introduced myself yet."
"You don't have to, like I said, Jaune told me who you are. Pyrrha Nikos, leader of Lie Ren and Nora Valkyrie. You also attend Beacon academy."
"Then, if Jaune told you who I am," She sounded hopeful, seeing as the boy in front of her seems to also be as clueless as Jaune for who she really is. "Do you know anything else about me?"
"Nope." Rito answered truthfully. "Why? Should I know anything else?"
"No, no, I was just asking is all." Pyrrha changed to a different topic. "How about we go somewhere else cleaner? I was walking towards where my friends are, would you care to join me?"
"If you're asking, then I see no problem." Just as they were about to head out of the alley, Rito turns to her. "Before we step out, you going to wrap that thing around your face, right?"
"Hmm? Oh! Right! Of course!" Wanting to make sure no one else would recognize her, the redheaded Huntress-in-training covered up her head once more. "Thank you for waiting! Let's go!"
Oddly enough, the street that the two were walking on was the same route Rito was going to take to reach the shelter. The distance gave the two enough time to talk to one another and to also give Rito some more insight on Jaune's friends.
'If I'm getting this right, Pyrrha is a celebrity that is attending the Huntsmen school Jaune couldn't go to.' Making a quick glance at her, Rito remembered the face that was hidden under that red scarf. 'She certainly has the looks you expect from someone so famous. If she was in my world, I'm sure she would be an idol.'
"My friends, Ren and Nora, messaged me some time about a place that they thought of joining. Since I tend to leave Beacon for some reprieve, I told them that I'm on my way."
"This place they want to join," Familiar turns, streets, and some buildings passed them by made Rito feel like he might know where they were going. "Is it a shelter?"
Surprised at how accurate his guess was, Pyrrha nodded her head and started to ask.
"Yes, it is. How did you know?"
"It's not that hard when this part of the city houses most of the shelters and soup kitchens. I should know, I've been walking around Vale for a bit." He told her. 'I also know because I actually stayed at the shelter.'
"Can I ask why they want to volunteer to work at a homeless shelter?" Rito asked.
"The reason why they want to is… I'm sorry, but I can't tell you the why. I feel that it would be better if they would explain it in their own words."
It didn't take a genius to understand that Rito should drop the idea of asking any longer.
After that, they soon walked in relative silence until finally the redhead stopped in front of the place that Ren and Nora wanted her to visit.
"Here we are, the shelter. I think they call this building-"
"I know the name."
"You do?"
"Yeah, this place is called: F.E.A.S.T." Walking forward, Rito looked back at Jaune's friend. "I know this, because I've been here before."
"You volunteered here then?"
"No," Not really seeing any reason to lie, the boy from another world told her the truth. "I know this place, because I stayed here."
The building itself was a modest size, a three-story tall structure that had plain white walls and a large brown roof that had cracks and stains from either the weather or the patrons who walk past it. It was quite plain and would easily be forgotten if not for the large line of homeless people and the sign placed at the front door.
"Food, Emergency, Aid, Shelter and Training." Rito read aloud the full name of the organization.
Now, F.E.A.S.T was just one of the many organizations that helped the people that were down on their luck. As a matter of fact, F.E.A.S.T is a freshly created shelter that was made by one man who, by seeing the good deeds of Spider-Man, saw fit to do his own part by making this very place for those who need help.
This did not just extend to people with wealth, there are also some who would come by to also lend a hand to help the needy.
"Glad that you made it, Pyrrha." Lie Ren, the only male in the team greeted his friend before setting his magenta colored eyes to Rito. "You also brought along a friend too. My name is Lie Ren, pleasure to meet you."
"Yūki Rito," He extended his hand to Ren. "Don't worry about explaining things, I'm a friend of Jaune's."
"Then I'm even more relived that no other words are needed to know us." Finishing the handshake, the green garbed Huntsman-in-training motioned both Pyrrha and Rito to follow. "As you can see, me and Nora have decided to join F.E.A.S.T in their effort to help the people who are from the streets to get back on their feet."
Ren soon went to detail about how he heard about this place and witnessing how the people who help those in need inspired him to also do the same in return. "While it is true that I'm a Huntsman and fighting the Grimm is my main focus, helping people by lifting a ladle is also an admirable role."
"That's very noble of you, Ren." Rito told him while smiling. "I haven't been in Vale for long, but I know that if I hadn't stumbled upon this place, then I'm sure I would probably be somewhere else far worse."
"I know how you feel, before I came to Vale, Nora and I lived village to village with no place to call home. Many that survive Grimm invasions do not have the financial security like some in the city resulting in an increase to the homeless. There are orphanages, of course, but even they need support from time to time, and even then, they do not give the full necessities that F.E.A.S.T has. Above all, the person who created F.E.A.S.T, was also the one that helped me and Nora long ago."
"Wow," Rito whistled. "That's some coincidence."
"Indeed, but a good one, nonetheless. It caught me by surprise to know the man that helped me and Nora long ago was here helping more people get off the streets. Sadly, he's not here today due to some other personal matters, but I hope to see him tomorrow and tell him that Nora and I still remember his kindness."
Speaking about the energetic girl, the sound of energetic laughter could be heard from the front of a long line that led to the kitchen.
"That must be Nora right now," Ren let out a sigh, but rather than frowning, he smiled. "Even when she makes a mess, Nora tries her best to make the people she serves smile. I should probably get back to helping her. Pyrrha, if you follow me, we can get you started. Rito, I'm sure you must be hungry, you can get some chow and we'll find you when we are done."
Getting in line, Rito could see the same faces from the last time he was here. Some who noticed Rito also remembered him and gave their greetings to his arrival. Walking forward in line, he started to hear the usual gossip within the line about how bad their life is, the recent attack from the White Fang, and the huge topic among them all, Spider-Man.
"The union should have some openings soon. We should check it out after we get our fill."
"I'm glad today isn't a scorcher. I always hate standing outside the House Depot waiting for people to ask for extra hands."
"I think I have enough saved up to buy an apartment, you want to be my roommate? We can split the bills."
"It's bad enough not having a roof over my head, but even when I finally find a place to sleep, I'm scared that there could be another White Fang attack."
"Thank god Spider-Man was there to stop them. I feel like the streets are getting better now that we have someone we can rely on."
"I never felt safe at any shelter I've been in. This one, I've never had a problem."
"You know, I saw Spider-Man swinging around my usual spot near the main square. He's rocking a new look!"
With people talking in the background, Rito continued to look forward while also thinking to himself.
'I hate to be jealous, but Vale really looks up to Spider-Man.' Though both boys used the term 'Friendly Neighborhood', it seemed that Jaune took it beyond that with how almost everyone in the kingdom seemed to take Spider-Man has a celebrity. 'I would even go as far and say that Jaune is almost popular as the Avengers on earth.'
Finally being part of the line to be inside the shelter, Rito was greeted by the smell of what he can assume being chicken stew and if one were to focus harder, a faint scent of cookies.
'Best part about this place is probably how the food is always different on some days.' Though the building outside appearance may needs upgrades, the interior was the main fixer upper.
The inside had three floors, the first being the main area for people to get medically checked, receive food, and even get bare essentials like clothes and hygiene gear. Second floor was mainly for the homeless to sleep in cots owned by F.E.A.S.T, but some did have their own sleeping system so they used whatever open space they could get to sleep indoors and not outside. For the top floor, it was mainly used for the staff that was used to have breaks for those on the hour. Even some of the people who are jobless go up to the third floor to ask if there is any way they can help.
Now, Rito may have not been to a homeless shelter in his world before, yet he could only guess that some couldn't hold a candle compared to a place like F.E.A.S.T with how well they help those in need.
'I can even see that it brings different people together too.'
He could see some people without homes laughing amongst each other like they were all best friends. Both humans and faunus, talking with each other and even showing genuine care for their fellow man.
'Guess having nothing is universal, even among different races.'
"Next, please!" A sweet-sounding voice made Rito come back to reality. Realizing he was next to get food, the young teen stepped up to the serving line. "Hello, I would like-" His talk stopped when he saw who was serving him food.
"Rito?" Aunt May, holding a bowl of piping hot chicken in front of her. "What are you…."
Suddenly, her eyes widened as if realizing something, then her surprise quickly turned to sadness.
"Huh, um," Not liking the sudden atmosphere, Rito's only response was to try and make a joke. "Hey, Mrs. Parker! Is there a chance I can take this to go?"
She soon then asked for someone else to take her shift and brought Rito to the third floor to talk alone.
Hours passed by for the hero of the Kingdom of Vale, but eventually, the moment has arrived by the sound of the last bell ringing to signal school is over.
His friends, Gwen and Eddie, left to get started on their work at Dr. Connors' lab. MJ, who is now starting her afterschool hours as part of the drama club, was also staying behind, leaving Jaune all alone as he silently traveled the school bus back to his home.
Arriving at the usual bus stop, Jaune made his usual trek back home, arrived at his front door, and did his usual greetings.
"Aunt May," He said. "I'm home!"
Whoever she was talking to stopped as the woman in charge of the house stepped out of the kitchen room and gave Jaune a warm smile.
"Welcome home, Jaune," She then looked at her first tenant. "Glad you're home safely. How was school?"
"Good, nothing really eventful other than Harry being grounded still." Jaune explained. 'Safely? All I did was come from school to back home.'
At that moment, Rito came into view who was wearing an apron with some food stains smeared on it.
"Right on time," The youngest in the room said as he wiped the flour off his hands on his apron. "We just finished making some cookies! Fair warning: I suck at baking, but I assure you, after eating five or six, you guys will like it. Mainly cause your taste buds won't work anymore."
"I spotted Rito walking along my usual route, so I decided to pick him up," She explained. "One thing led to another, and now he's helping me bake! He's such a wonderful lad!"
"Can't complain about getting some cookies," Said the blond hero. "Glad to see you again, Rito. Hope you enjoyed what Vale has to offer you."
"Yeah! I actually have to tell you something I'm sure would blow your mind! I met-"
"Before you two talk, Jaune, I need to speak to you privately." Her mood became serious. "Rito, I hope you don't mind, but can you go back to the kitchen, please?"
Without question, Rito did as he was told, leaving Jaune and Aunt May alone in the living room.
"Rito shares the same similarities as you, Jaune." Her comment left the boy confused. "You both seem to have a good head on your shoulders, but you both tend to forget that you are too young to start handling life on your own. Especially when I found him at the shelter getting food."
"Ah." He had no real response to give Aunt May. "I didn't know it would be the shelter you would work at, Aunt May."
"The last shelter I worked at couldn't stay open and was closed, Jaune." She made a small huff. "Thank god there was someone kind enough to reopen the building and create a new organization to replace the old one. F.E.A.S.T may be small for now, but I'm glad the new owner has made serious changes for the better."
Just like Aunt May explained, her job is working at the homeless shelter. She actually never worked since Ben usually had a steady job working and also benefits when he used to be in the military. Sadly, after his absence, a new mouth to feed, and her own way of coping with the loss made her take the option to find employment.
A job that seemed to stick was working at a shelter where she can help people who no longer have a home.
Aunt May then told Jaune that the shelter almost shut down due to low funding, poor conditions, and even work force incompetence that almost lead her to lose a place of work.
"Thank god someone was generous enough to take over. If not, then there would have been more people out on the streets." A sad look spread across her face. "As much as I like Spider-Man helping clean up crime, it still leaves the people who have no homes targets for vandals and vagrants."
'Can't really say it's not true.' Jaune thought bitterly. 'Even if I stop people from hurting others. It still leaves the fact that some don't have nowhere else to go.'
Memory of the time he talked to one of the tenants after stopping Sandman came to mind.
"Old homes are cheap, and if that apartment complex was destroyed, then I'm sure those who lived in it would probably either move somewhere else even more rundown."
Getting back on topic, Jaune gave Aunt May a sad smile.
"I know you probably had enough apologies from him, but I still want to say sorry for keeping this from you."
"You don't have to say anything else." She said as the woman placed a hand over Jaune's shoulder. "I already talked to him and he told me his circumstances."
"About why he's in Vale?"
"Yes," As she spoke her eyes trailed back to the kitchen. "Poor boy lost his mother and, in his grief, wanted to go back to where she grew up. It's even more sadder knowing that he didn't even tell his father and sister."
'That… was somewhat more on the nose then you think.' Jaune knew that what Rito said to Aunt May was kind of true.
"He's been looking everywhere for his mother's old home to the point that he has not a single Lien left to use. I'm angry at myself to even ask him why he was at F.E.A.S.T in the first place, but now, knowing his predicament, I know that he needs a friend to help him through this dark moment."
"You don't know how right you are, Aunt May." Jaune said under his breath.
"I'm glad you understand, then." Having said the main topic, she soon adopted a sad smile. "I also want to talk about yesterday about what happened with the White Fang. You know why I grounded you right?"
"Yes, Aunt May." Jaune was no fool, as much as he feels somewhat against her action, he knows her intentions were pure.
"Remember a while back? When Mr. McCarren was almost robbed?"
He knows that time, because not only was he working there that night, Jaune was also there to stop the robbery.
"Yes, Aunt May."
It was also the day his life was even further changed when Ruby stepped into his life.
"I don't think I'll ever forget that night."
"I was so grateful to know you and Mr. McCarren were safe and it was thanks to your friend, Ruby, but even more so with Spider-Man's help." Aunt May was always thankful for Spider-Man and his contribution to the city, yet now she sounded worried and it was soon becoming clear with what came next. "I thought that I can just be okay with everything and not worry so much about what the next day will bring. Now, with what happened with Roman Torchwick, Sand Monster, White Fang, and even that highway incident, almost every disaster could have had more casualties if it wasn't for Spider-Man saving the day. It comes to a point that; I feel like even a man such as he needs a break every now and then."
"Are you worried that Spider-Man won't stop crime some day?" Jaune asked her.
"Of course I'm worried. As much as people hype Spider-Man up, at the end of the day he is only one person. Spider-Man may have stopped crimes that could have escalated far higher if he wasn't there, yet there will come a time when he falls short. When that happens, I just hope that day never comes and the people who cheer him on won't decide to turn their back on him."
Thinking about that day sent a small shiver down Jaune's spine.
"That's why I worry about you. Worry about what happens when a day comes where no one saves the day, where no one saves you. When you see trouble, or even know you are about to be in danger, you run away and don't look back. Please, Jaune, think more about yourself before others."
"I... promise, Aunt May." He didn't need any other words to say after that only a firm hug between them was enough to ease May's worry.
"How about we change this from sad to happy, hmm?" Aunt May said whipping some tears already forming under her eyes. "I'm sure we kept Rito waiting and I hate waste some freshly made cookies."
"I can't wait to try them, Aunt May."
She smiled, and when the two entered the kitchen, they were greeted with smoke.
Dinner was filled with laughs, full stomachs, and burnt pastries that night. The owner of the house getting to bed early left the two boys to their own devices. Cleaning the table, washing dishes, and locking everything up for the night. The two were now in Jaune's room.
"You know, Jaune, I got to say that I'm impressed with what you have here." Flipping another page from Jaune's journal, the younger spider nodded his head as the impressive drawings and small notes next to them. "I mean, you got some cool ideas here, but looking around your room," Setting the journal down and using the only chair in the room, Rito rotated a full 360 and the stopped. "It just looks like a plain room to me. Well, I guess the only thing interesting is that spider you have here. What's its name anyway?"
"Her." Jaune said to Rito.
"It's a girl?" Looking at Jaune, Rito can see that the blond was sitting on his bed, the glass cage housing the pet was placed over his lap. "How can you tell? You an expert on arthropods?"
"No, I'm just certain that It's female." Grabbing the bag that was under his feet, Jaune retrieved a small jar that had some meal worms. "Got these from a pet store close to my school. Hope you like them!"
"….Are you talking to me?" Rito sounded confused.
"No, I was talking to her," To show what he meant, Jaune dropped a meal worm right in front of the spider which immediately started to feast. "People who owns a pet always talks to them, so it's perfectly normal."
"If you say so." Reading the contents of the journal again one page in particular caught Rito's eye. "Your building some kind of tracer?"
"Oh, yeah, I did plan to use it sooner or later." Throwing in one last meal worm into the glass box, Jaune placed his pet back onto his desk, went to his closet, and came back to show Rito what contraption he made. "This was made from an Atlas soldier's radio. It's a two-part process, with one being the small tracker that took some time to be smaller than a thumb tack and the other being the compartment that holds them and also charges them."
Reaching for the device, Rito held a smooth, small rectangular box that had Jaune's spider symbol on the center. Opening it, he saw eight small spider tracers aligned and in their own small slot with small dots that glowed green showing that they are fully charged.
"I just finished these not too long ago. I had the idea and sketches made but didn't have the Lien to afford to make them so compact and refined. Luckily, that isn't a problem anymore and I can use these guys whenever I deal with people I need to track down."
"These are some pretty sleek gear you got, Jaune." Rito said pulling one tracer out of the slot. "For someone who doesn't look like a gear head, you certainly got a knack for this."
"I'm not going to just bring tons of scraps in Aunt May's house. I'm already pushing my luck about having my suit under my bed. Having the room littered with gadgets and wires would raise questions, and personally, I just get the things I know I need rather than get stuff in bulk." He explained to Rito.
"Speaking about suits," Standing back up, the boy from a different world started to take off his clothes to show his spider suit was underneath his civilian attire. "I think it's about time I should start patrolling."
"Aunt May should be asleep at this time," Jaune lifted his hand to cup his chin. "If she does knock on the door to make sure I'm still here, I'll let her know you're here too. What with me being grounded and all, but I'm sure after a week of hovering around me, Aunt May will start to relax again."
Putting his mask on, Rito's mask lenses started to focus and widen to show that it was functioning right. As Rito was preparing, Jaune placed some pillows and some clothes as a decoy, covered it with a blanket, and also gave Rito his scroll.
"In case you need to make a call, just go to contacts and type in 'Aunt May's house' and I'll answer right away." Face lighting up in remembrance, Jaune also reached for his spider tracers and gave them to Rito. "Here are the spider tracers too, in case you can't catch whoever is running away from you."
"Thanks, mom," He joked, seeing as how Jaune is practically acting like a parent. "Did you also pack me my lunch too? Seriously, Jaune, you forget that I also do this stuff in my world. I'll be fine, you just worry about yourself."
Jaune opened his mouth only to have Rito cut him off from speaking.
"I'll call if I need help and I'll tell you everything that happened tonight." Exiting the room through the window, Rito gave one last look at Jaune. "By the way, before I forget, do you have anything in particular that you want me to know about?"
"Hmm..." Jaune pondered. "White Fang are rising in an alarming rate. Don't know why their numbers are increasing since I kind of ruined the docks involving Roman and also their rally. If you're able, see if you can find out why they're so proactive."
"You got it!" No longer in doors, the Spider-Man from Earth stretched his limbs and soon started his adventure through the nightlife of Vale. "Ok, Vale, let's see how you handle this friendly neighborhood Spider-Man!"
And done! I know I publish chapters on the weekend, but with some outside business, I had to publish it today. Don't worry, the chapters will go back to the usual schedule on the weekends.
Yup, this is just the first part of the Breach Arc that will have three chapters. This is chapter only focuses on Jaune and Rito having exposition and also some new developments with NPR and also the inclusion of F.E.A.S.T! I just wanted the first part to get the story of the two Spider-Men moving forward and the next one will start to see the bad guys setting up their master plan.
Now, as you already know, this arc is also a preview of introducing the start of something I wanted to try. The fanfic multiverse is an idea that I thought of including some other fanfic authors that I want to colab with and the Spider-Man known as Rito is one of them. If you haven't checked his story out make sure to read his work, so you can understand who Rito is and how he came here. The new Spider-Man will not stay for long; he will only be here for the Beach Arc since I just wanted to show a preview of what it will be like when other Spider-Men show up. Some of you might think it's too early, but it was requested by Magister Of Oz that we should try it out sooner than later.
Make sure to check out his story: Friendly Neighborhood Trouble (To Love Ru/Spider-Man)
Others also characterize that even though I have Jaune known to tinker with things, some of you commented that I have failed to show that side of him in the chapters. Reason is, I thought that it would be too much exposition and also because I try not to have it lean too far into the whole tech thing. He also does not want Aunt May to wonder why he has so much junk in the room.
Speaking about rooms, I made a call back on an Omake regarding a janitor that gave Jaune some help. At first, I thought of having the beginning of the chapter be known that Jaune took Rito to Aunt May's attic, but that would complicate things with how Jaune doesn't want Rito anywhere near Aunt May until he knows he can trust him.
I know that my grammar is bad too, but I will try to fix any mistakes that my beta and I can find when we go over chapters. As well as making sure that I will keep sending out chapters that goes forward with the plot.
I keep introducing Marvel characters due to Jaune living the life outside of Beacon where most of the RWBY plot line usually revolves around them. This story is mainly on Jaune and how he is part of Marvel, though when the major plot points such as the Breach and Vytal will of course show him being part of the RWBY plot once more.
Speaking about RWBY, some of you guys are somewhat put off on how I portray Spider-Man/Jaune able to go toe-to-toe, even out performing, some of RWBY characters. Some people in Marvel like Thanos, Galactus, and other OP bad guys will not be in the story as of right now. When they stop Salem, I think that will be the time to introduce Marvel's strangest villains.
Though I will say that even though they have aura and a semblance, the RWBY canon does not really show any consistency in most parts. An example is how in Vol 5, Hazel can shrug of impalement, while Weiss gets stabbed by a spear. Not to mention, when you have someone like Spider-Man, the guy that has spider sense, super human abilities, and other amazing heroes like Ant Man and Iron Man in the mix. Just shows that even Marvel's 'street class' heroes outperform Huntsmen.
For Jaune's character, I wanted to show some depth and personality shifts, yet it seems it came off too preachy and I will try my best to even him out some more. All I can do is make sure he will be the best Spider-Man in the story and I hope you all will enjoy what comes next.
Shout out to my Beta too, so after reading this chapter make sure you go to his stories and see his work. But make sure to like, fav, and leave a comment about what you think about this chapter and PM if any of you have questions you need me to answer. Thank you.
[Omake: Paint the town red]
"Is this the man that has swayed the hearts of our people?" A man with horn on his head, dressed in a black suit, brandishing a katana stared at a wall that had a spray-painted Spider-Man logo. Taking a closer look, he can even see something under the street art that almost looked like the White Fang's symbol. "So much so that our own symbol is hidden under his shadow?"
'It's worse than I thought.' Adam thought 'Already I see the young begin to toss away our ideals for some clown thinking himself some superhero. Is it too late to right these wrongs and make the Faunus in Vale come back to the right path? Is Bla-'
"Stop." He said to himself, relaxing his hand that was gripping his weapon. "This is more than just Blake."
'Besides, when she comes back from her mission, she'll see her reason for being here gone.' Thinking back on how he was here. Adam remembered that the original plan was to have him in Vale after they used the train from Mt Glenn to breach the inwards of Vale.
Only for it to change when one of Cinder's outside sources found out that some teacher is taking some 1st year students to where their secret hideout was.
At first, Adam was adamant on sticking to the original plan, not once convinced that a team of freshman can stop them. When he heard that said team had Blake involved, Adam was even more stubborn to stay, but denies that claim entirely.
'It's all because of that damn woman. She thinks that I might hinder the plan if I see Blake.' Dropping the notion for now, Adam could hear someone walking from behind him. "Report."
"Sir," A Faunus stood at attention. "We just finished setting up another spot."
"Good, we'll stop for now and get back to work tomorrow. Head to the car and get it started, I'll be there shortly."
"Yes, sir."
Just when Adam was about to leave, the Man stopped, moved his free hand on the hilt of his sword, and used the other hand holding the hilt to press the trigger.
In one flowing movement, Adam slashed the brick wall, and slowly returned his blade back into the sheath that made a soft (Clink).
Soon, the wall that was slashed started to fall on the ground leaving a cloud of cement dust into the air.
'Spider-Man, I see now that a man such as you are more valuable alive. But know this, if we come to blows, I will not hesitate to strike you down before you become an actual threat.'
While Adam started walking again, the bull Faunus started to hear sirens not too far away.
"Sir!" The same soldier from earlier returned. "The cops are-"
"What the hell are you doing?! I thought you started the car!?"
"I just thought you needed to know that-Why is the wall destroyed?"
"Forget about that! We need to leave!"
"What do you suggest, sir?"
"It's obvious what we have to do," Adam sprinted to the car. "Run away!"
