(Chapter 39: Breached. Part 2)
"Jaune! Rito!" She called out their names. "Breakfast!"
It was Saturday morning in the Parker Household and starting their day was having a family breakfast consisting of eggs, bacon, and wheat cakes.
After gaining a new tenant, Aunt May's house had become livelier with each passing day. Instead of setting up a table for two, it was now three, chores were completed much faster, and Aunt May seemed all too happy knowing that having Rito lived with her and Jaune was the right thing to do.
"Morning, Aunt May!" The first to greet her was the youngest in the house. Entering the kitchen, Rito was sporting plain pyjama bottoms and a regular white T-shirt that looked to be a size bigger than him. He also seemed to be still half asleep, having the tell-tale sign of bed head shaping his hair in odd angles. "Breakfast smells nice~! I shouldn't be surprised since it was cooked by you!"
"Good morning to you too, Rito!" Already starting a day with getting a complement, the matriarch of the house placed the freshly cooked food on the center of the table. "Where's Jaune? Still asleep?"
"He's awake, but he's still having problems with a headache." Rito explained.
"Again?" Aunt May sounded worried. "This has been going on for a while now, maybe I should take him to a doctor?"
"Did I hear something about a doctor?" Just then, Jaune, the third member of the house stepped into the kitchen. Like Rito, Jaune was also sporting plain pyjama bottoms, but the shirt he was wearing had the mascot of Pumpkin Pete. "Morning, Aunt May! Rito!"
"Good Morning, Jaune!" Aunt May was about to tell him about sending him to the doctor, only for him to head straight over to one of the cabinets. "Jaune? Are you looking for something, dear?"
"Just some Tylenol." As he opened the cabinet housing the pain killers, the blonde was once again struck with a bad migraine. "Man, these headaches are getting unbearable! Maybe It's because of too many tackles from practice."
"Then shouldn't you have a concussion then?" Rito said, making Aunt May turn a bit pale. "Ah-I mean that as a joke! He's fine, right?"
"Yup!" Popping two in his mouth, Jaune reached for a glass in the dish rack, poured water from the fridge built in dispenser, and downed a full glass with one gulp. "There, that's better!"
Refilling the same glass, Jaune walked to the table and took his place between Rito and Aunt May.
"Jaune," Not yet convinced that he's ok, Aunt May placed a hand over his. "I'm worried about you. You've been having these sudden headaches every day since Rito came. Maybe you're being too taxed with school, what with you having football practice and your job. I'll call the school on Monday to let them know you won't be there, just to give you more time to rest."
"Thanks, Aunt May, but I think a nice, warm meal will really make me feel better today!"
"Same here!" Said Rito, who then proceeded to start off today's breakfast with him placing both hands in front of him and saying, "Thank you for the food!"
Just like Rito, both Aunt May and Jaune did the same actions and enjoyed their meals.
"Thank you for the food!"
"Thank you for the food!"
The meal did not make Jaune feel any better.
"Grrrrah!" Messaging his head with both hands, Jaune rested his head in his hands as he felt another wave of pain. "Dang thing is never going away."
Jaune was able to play it off to Aunt May about his headache during breakfast, but as soon as she left to start her shift at F.E.A.S.T, the blonde soon showed his pain was never gone even after taking pain killers.
"Jaune," Concern was evident in Rito's voice. "You've been acting like this for some time. Do you need to take more Tylenol?"
"It's out."
"Already?" He asked surprised.
"Two was not enough," Jaune grimaced. "Heck, two was never enough for me, I had to take over a dozen of those suckers to actually feel some of the effects. Even then, it didn't last long!"
"It must be because of our high tolerance and quick healing that's pushing the effects of the drug out of your body." Jaune's fellow spider hero explained. "Which is weird, since I've also had small spurts of migraines like you, but they don't last as long as yours."
What the boys were talking about was not a regular case of a headache, but one that is related to their spider sense. It started out small for Rito, annoying that soon became a hindrance, yet it was still controllable and even bearable.
In Jaune's case, his level was between painful to absolutely skull-splitting.
"I swear, I feel like my spider sense has been going off 24/7!" Going to the fridge was his only idea to ease the pain was a frozen bag of peas. "You sure you checked around Vale to make sure there was nothing serious happening?"
"Positive," Rito reassured him. "Jaune, I've been stopping whatever crime that's been happening every night. Maybe your spider sense is just off? Or maybe your spider tracers are on the fritz and are sending a frequency to you?"
"Then it should also affect you too, Rito." Jaune countered. "Either way, since Aunt May is gone, I think it's a good opportunity to head to a pharmacy and get something to help me."
"Aren't you grounded still?"
"Being grounded is the last thing on my mind," Another sharp intake of breath made Jaune more motivated to leave the house. "And right now, I feel like my mind is about to split in two."
"Did I say my skull was splitting in two?" Jaune asked Rito, who was now at the local pharmacy just half an hour away from Aunt May's home. "What I meant to say, is that it's now being split in two by a jack hammer."
"Yes, I get it already." The younger spider rolled his eyes. "You don't have to keep telling me every minute." Looking at the meds on the aisle, Rito grumbled under his breath. "Glad my spider sense isn't acting up."
Stopping at one part of the aisle, the youngest spider eyed two versions of painkillers, one that had a small number of pills and the other with more pills. It was a no brainer to take one that had the larger quantity, yet for Rito he seemed to do the exact opposite and chose the one with fewer.
'Small amount compared to the one next to it, a little bit pricey too, but when you have a spider sense that lets you know what's the better deal, I don't have to pull my hair to make a choice.' Rito thought smugly as he went to the counter to buy the pain meds. 'Thanks to having no distractions, my training with my spider sense has grown!'
Indeed, even though Rito was stuck in this universe, that didn't mean he would not use this to his advantage. Each day he would explore more of his abilities, specifically his most powerful tool, the spider sense. Like exercising a muscle, Rito's efforts seemed to bore fruit as his control over his spider sense grew to newer heights. One major gain was his spider sense can now help him move in total darkness without tripping or hitting anything around him, and warns him if he was about to step on something that would make too much noise when he was being stealthy. While another, somewhat smaller gain, was his spider sense can also direct Rito to products that gives him a better deal.
"That will be five lien." Said the worker manning the register.
"Just five? The price I saw was twice that amount."
"Ah," The man who was working the counter clicked his teeth. "Someone forgot to change the price tag. This pain meds you're buying is actually half-off!"
"I see," Rito said, but the inside of his mind he imagined himself raising his fist in the air. 'Yes! Thank you Spider sense!' Reaching for the lien in his pocket, Rito handed exact change to the cashier, grabbed the medicine, and left the store with Jaune still clutching his head.
"Can you hold on a little longer till we get to the house?" Rito asked. "Don't want us to get any attention if people see you downing these pain pills like they were pez."
"Sure, I think I can manage the walk," Jaune put his hands down. "Actually, I feel like-"
'I'm on fire!'
Where he was once just walking alongside Rito on a lazy Saturday morning, turned itself to be hell on Remnant as the Spider hero of Vale was now covered in fire.
No, not just him, but everything around him was engulfed in flames! Buildings all around him were destroyed, screams could be heard in every direction, and the sound of beasts was not far either.
'Is this Vale?!' Ignoring his situation for now, Jaune could see that where he was standing was Beacon.
Students ran for their lives, while some who were fine fought the grimm to cover for the injured as they fled. An even more disastrous problem soon showed itself as robots were also among the many obstacles that tried to kill people, Jaune could even see some bigger robots also doing the same too.
'Are those supposed to be paladins? They look much stronger than the one I piloted at the rally.'
Another act began to play, as the scene in front of jaune looked to be the inside of Beacon that had Blake fighting someone. The person Blake was fighting, possibly even losing too, was a tall man with red hair, horns, wearing a red suit, the signature White Fang mask, and was using a sword that nearly stabbed Blake.
The fighting soon stopped as Blake was no longer able to fight and was laying on her back helpless as the man attempted to make the final blow.
Once more, his environment changed as he was now on top of a destroyed clock tower, but this time he was not alone. Two familiar faces, Pyrrha and Cinder, were fighting to the death as a giant grimm loomed over them.
'What is this!?' Jaune asked, panicked at seeing things that make no sense to him. 'What am I supposed to do?!'
His answer never came as the fire, noise, and the fighting was drowned in darkness. Leaving Jaune standing alone with nothing insight.
Then, without warning, sound did return, but not of gunfire, grimm, or people this time.
Just laughing.
'Ok, I think this is enough for me today!' Running to nowhere in particular, Jaune desperately tried to find some form of exit. 'This laughing, it feels like it's chasing me!'
The blonde then stopped his running when something bright shined in front of him. Shielding his eyes from the sudden brightness, the spider teen opened his eyes to see what new image was being shown to him. It looked to be a ball of fire heading straight at him, yet as it came closer and closer it soon changed into a giant jack-o-lantern, it's sinister grin opening to try and swallow Jaune whole.
It wasn't done changing though, as something came out of the pumpkin and charged straight at Jaune. Just when the monster could get close, Jaune's body was soon pulled back by some invisible force, leaving everything behind.
As Jaune was quickly pulled out of this hell, the only thing that could still be heard was that sinister laughing.
"Jaune?" Realizing his friend was not following him, Rito turned around to see Jaune not walking and standing motionless like a statue. "Jaune? You ok-"
Without warning, Jaune clutched his chest and sucked in air like his life depended on it.
"Hah, hah, haa," Swiveling his head around, Jaune stopped and looked at Rito. "How long was I gone?"
"Gone?" He asked in confusion. "You were just standing there silent for, like, maybe a second. Jaune, are you ok, man?"
"Just a second? It felt a lot longer than that." Combing his fingers through his hair, Jaune discovered that his headache was no longer bothering him. "My head, it doesn't hurt anymore."
"Good, I'm glad to hear it." Rito said in relief. "Does that mean your spider sense is working again?"
"I don't think my spider sense was ever broken, Rito." Connecting the dots on how his spider sense was reacting and how it stopped after Jaune witnessed those images gave Jaune some light on what his danger sense was telling him. "I think… I think my spider sense was warning me of something… Evil."
If Jaune had to choose what power to keep if all the other powers he has are gone, he would definitely pick his spider sense.
Sure, some would love to have super strength and be able to lift things that not even Huntsmen with strength enhancements could ever lift.
Or maybe super speed would be another thing that most would choose too. To be standing in one place, then gone in the next, in the eyes of a normal person it would look like teleportation. For skilled fighters, like Huntsmen, they would probably still track your movement, but only as a blur.
The list can go on from there to super agility, super equilibrium, night vision, healing factor, webs, and etc.
But nothing, in Jaune's opinion, will ever top the spider sense.
You're in the middle of a fight and someone is trying to hit you when you aren't looking? Spider sense.
When someone is trying to make a surprise attack long range? Spider sense.
A squad of guys with automatic rifles gunning you in every direction? Spider sense.
If the milk you're going to drink is bad? Again, Spider sense.
What's even more important about having the spider sense, was that if Jaune didn't' have it when navigating the city while web swinging, then he would have a hard time knowing where to go or when to shoot another web line.
Truly, if he was ever thankful for that spider bite, Jaune would be thankful to have the ability to sense danger. Cause it seems that it can do more than just sense danger, it can see into the future.
"You saw the future?" Asked Rito, seating on the other end of the living room couch with Jaune sitting on the other end. Both boys were no back at Aunt May's house, where Jaune told Rito about the startling revelation he experienced. "Since when did we enter Mirai Nikki?"
"I'm going to take that response as to you not believing me." Jaune sighed. "Listen, I know it sounds weird, but you have to admit that it's possible! I mean, you're from another dimension, how is me seeing the future unbelievable?"
"Cause if your spider sense is able to see the future, then how come I don't have it?"
"Maybe because yours hasn't developed yet?" Jaune pointed out some explanations Rito's spider sense was not like Jaune's ability. "Or maybe due to our dimensions being so different that it also diversifies our own spider powers? Possibly even age and maturity?"
"This coming from the guy who wears clothes that have a cute bunny on it every day? Even when you go to sleep too."
"His name is Pumpkin Pete and he is a national treasure! Get it right!" Jaune countered. "But anyway, I know for a fact that ever since I saw those visions my head hasn't been hurting me. Which means, all this time my spider sense was warning me of danger that could very well spell disaster for Vale!"
"If it was telling you such a huge problem, how come it couldn't have told you sooner? You know, to save yourself from all the headaches?"
Thinking about Rito's question, the blonde spider pondered about why his spider sense decided to tell him now rather than the previous days.
"It's a stretch, but maybe it was because I kept holding it in? I always somewhat restrain my spider sense whenever I fight. I always felt overwhelmed with the constant information it gives me, so since I kept it on a tight seal it started to build up?" It was flimsy, but that was the only thing Jaune could think of. 'Usually, whenever I increase my spider sense, I see everything around me and more. Like I know what my enemy was about to do before even they do. Now, this is beyond the usual scope of my danger sense, even more so when I don't even know when it'll happen!'
It could start in 2, 5, 8 days, or maybe it will happen in 3 months before it could happen. All Jaune knows is that whatever happens right now will be a deciding factor on how to change it.
"Like a balloon having too much air that it explodes?" Rito gave an example. "I don't know, that seems way too convenient for it to start now. Plus, if it is the future, you don't even know when it can happen."
"You are right about all that, but I can't give you any other answer. All I know is that what I saw could very well end Vale. Which means, we have to be even more vigilant if we intend to stop it."
"We?"
"Yes, we, as in I'm going out on patrols again."
"Even though you're grounded?"
"I rather have Aunt May to lose trust in me than her losing her life if the worse comes to pass." Images of Vale falling, the robots, the grimm, and the people in the crossfire flashed in his mind. "I know it sounds cliché, but the future isn't set in stone yet. If we just press harder on night patrols, we might find a lead that could help us learn more about my deadly premonition."
Though Jaune may be grounded, that did not leave Rito the opportunity to walk around Vale.
'Jaune is using the time he has to himself to figure more about his vision.' While Jaune was at home, Rito chose to head over to F.E.A.S.T. 'I wonder if Ren and his team are there?'
"Oi~! Rito~!" A familiar voice shouted behind him.
"Hmm?" Turning around, the orange haired teen saw Jaune's best friend, Gwen Stacy and Eddie Brock. "Hey, it's nice seeing you two again."
"Funny seeing you here by your lonesome." Gwen's face lit up with recognition. "Right! Jaune is grounded, so does that mean you're just walking around?"
"No, I thought about going to see Aunt May at F.E.A.S.T," Looking a bit closer at the two, Rito smiled at the implication. "You guys on a date?"
"Wha-" Oddly enough, it was Eddie who seemed flustered. "No! We were just-"
"Pff! Ha! Ha! Good one, Rito!" Gwen held her stomach and laughed. "That's funny! Naw, Eddie and I are going to Doc Conner's lab to help him with some extra work! It's some next level stuff! Say, would you like to go see where we work?"
'I am kind of curious to know more about Jaune's friends.' Thinking for a moment, Rito chose to follow the two to Doc Connor's lab. Entering the building, the youngest teen in the group whistled at the sight before him.
"Nice place you work at." He complimented as he looked at the various tools and gadgets that were all around him. "What does the good doc specialize?"
"He's a biochemist," Gwen explained, looking at Eddie, the blonde boy seemed to understand even without her saying anything and left to find Doc Connors. "He's a mad genius when it comes to mutagens, but he's really focused on herpetology."
"Herpa-what?" Rito tilted his head.
"Lizards," Said a new voice coming from another room. Stepping out of his office, Doc Connors gave his new guest a friendly smile. "I must be getting popular if more people are coming into my building! Eddie told me about who your new friend is, Gwen. I had him set up some equipment in the next room, why don't you help Eddie while showing our young friend here around my lab."
Following the suggestion, Gwen left the two on their own.
"So, are you liking Vale?" He asked.
"It's fine, I'm staying with Jaune at Mrs. Parker's house." Rito answered. "Can you tell me about herpetology? It sounds pretty interesting."
"If you must know," Though Doc Connors looks like he was about to explain in a lecturing tone, the tone of his voice sounded like he was excited to tell the young man. "I have been looking at the human and Faunus genes for some time now. It led me to understand how some humans from long ago began to evolve and take characteristics of animals, hence why you see some people with different animal parts."
"I know that humans and Faunus have some issues long ago. But why all the hate, since we're all technically the same?"
The doctor sighed. "Dating back, it was still a rare sight to see someone with rabbit ears and others with wings, so some would sell the faunus as a form of status or for labor since some faunus were more useful than regular slaves. Now though, I'm sure it was due to war and some prideful people who won over level headed minds. Regardless, at the end of the day, be it people with or without animal limbs, we are all people cut from the same genes."
Rito was going to ask him to elaborate more, but the Doc chuckled.
"But nevermind that, let's get back to my study on lizards. As you know, some Faunus that have lizard DNA, tend to have the traits that enable them to perform amazing feats. For instance, those who are a chameleon Faunus are able to blend into the background, making them basically invisible! Others have Lizard tails that, like most lizards, are able to break off and regrow a new tail! Yet, for Faunus, they can only do a small percentage of what real animals can do."
"So, let me get this straight. For chameleon Faunus they can blend in, but that's basically it, right?" Rito simplified Doc Connors words. "Does that mean that spider Faunus can only shoot webs and not stick to walls or don't have eight eyes like regular spiders?"
"Yes, the Faunus are basically one trick ponies! I know, they also have night vision, different skin texture, and have some degree of better senses then their relatives, the humans. However, when I compare Faunus DNS, to animal DNA, I can see that the faunus are only at a small percentage compared to actual animals."
"You mean," The orange haired teen tried to find a word best suited to describe Faunus. "Counterfeits?"
"Basically, if faunus were truly aligned with animals, then they would take on a more heteromorphic form. I would like to think that they are half-bloods, able to do a certain quirk of the animal they are based off of, but that's it really."
Rito could imagine Jaune, a human turned Faunus hybrid, becoming some kind of man spider. A shiver went down Rito's spine, when thought if there was a chance if he too might become a man spider. 'Glad Jaune and I won the genetic lottery.'
"However, with my research on Lizard Faunus and lizard DNA, I can make a serum that can actually regrow arms and legs!"
Clutching his missing arm, Doc Connors eyes shone with hope and determination.
"Can you imagine it? People have lost limbs in natural disasters, wars, and grimm. With the help of the serum I'm making, I can help countless lives get back on their feet! No more will they feel the ghost of their missing piece, no more wondering if they are a hindrance, or having people look at what they are missing and think of them as their lesser. My research, my hopes and dreams will become a reality."
"Wow, Doc I- That's really an inspiring goal to have." In Rito's world, most of his adventures had outrages adventures that led to funny and even painful adventures. This time it felt like a breath of fresh air to see a man of science perform work that would benefit humanity and not against it.
"Thank you, Rito." The Doctor's smile turned sad. "I should probably also tell you that there are also some complications with my research. Not in a practical sense in the medical field, but in a more religious standpoint."
"Are you saying that there are some people who think you are basically tampering with nature?"
"More like playing god." The doctor laughed at some inside joke only he understood. "Regular people would not see the scientific success behind my research. They would instead see it as an act against god, but I'm certain that some would think that they would turn into an animal if injected with the serum."
"That's really sad, Doc." Sad, but true. With how Rito sees some humans who are still against the faunus and vice versa, it would be obvious some would go against the notion of using such methods.
"Yes, yet I can't blame them." Seeing the surprised look from Rito, Connors explained. "It's true, there are some who think that if injected they will become a faunus, or something worse, but the same could be said in reverse. Some evil group would use my project to reverse engineer it and use it as a weapon against the faunus to turn them into humans! As of now, I fear that prejudice and hate will not go away so soon, but I have faith the next generation, Gwen and Eddie's generation, might have a better chance though."
Speaking about Gwen and Eddie, the two older teens finished helping set Doc's equipment and made it back to Rito and their boss's conversation.
"We should probably get started soon," He told his two lad assistants. "Thank you for giving this old science geek time to talk, Rito. I hope you enjoy the rest of your day!"
As the scientist left to start his work, Gwen looked at Rito and asked. "Do you know where to go from here? I can call a cab to take you home, or do you still want to go to F.E.A.S.T?"
"F.E.A.S.T would be nice!" Just as the two were walking outside to wait for the vehicle, Rito gave Gwen a small bow. "Thank you for taking me to see your boss, Gwen! He's very passionate about his work, I hope his dreams will come true soon!"
"Whoa! Glad you liked the visit, but I don't think you have to bow to thank me for it." She said in surprise. "If I'm being honest with myself, I just wanted this job in hopes of getting out of my regular job as a camp counselor at some dumpy camp. Though, the longer I worked alongside him, I discovered how lucky I was to work alongside a man like Doc Connors and not think of him as an excuse to quit my camp counselor job."
The sound of a car made the two see that Rito's ride arrived. Saying their goodbyes, the young spider made it to F.E.A.S.T. Giving his driver his payment, Rito entered the shelter and saw Aunt May, Ren, Nora, and Pyrrha as well as some other people crowding around someone.
"Hi, Aunt May!" His voice was loud enough for Jaune's landlord to notice his presence.
"Rito! I didn't know you would come around here." She greeted the boy. "Actually, you're at the right moment to meet someone!"
"Oh? Is this that young man that's been talking about, Mrs. Parker?" That someone Aunt May was talking about stepped out of that crowd and put a hand on her shoulder. "Is this Mr. Arc I've been hearing so much about?" The man asked, but seemed to lose his bearings and smiled knowingly, as if he already knows the answer.
"No, sir," Aunt May knew he was joking and laughed. "This is Yūki Rito, a friend of Jaune's from his village in Ansel."
Getting a good look at this person who seemed well acquainted with Aunt May. He can see this man was around 5 feet, black hair, brown eyes, and was sporting a simple set of khaki pants and a long-sleeved white button short. Appearance wise, this man looked like he just got off work and was getting ready to go home, but upon closer inspection Rito can see that this man was far from the usual worker drone mentality he sees in Japan.
For one thing, this man just radiated positivity!
"My name is Martin Li!" The now named Mr. Li extended his hand out to Rito and flashed a smile. It felt so natural on Mr. Li's face, that it even made Rito smile without him realizing! "Mrs. Parker actually talked about you, but I still wanted to meet you!"
"Thank you, sir." Reaching the man's outward hand, Rito was caught off guard once again when the man's grip wasn't that of a typical office worker. "I'm going out on a limb here and say that you're the man who Ren and Nora talked about, yeah?"
Tilting his head back, Li laughed with joy. That seemed to trigger another person to laugh just as loud as him and soon everyone near Martin also joined too.
'Wow, I heard laughing could be infectious, but not like this.' Rito thought in wonder.
"Rito!" Nora latched her arms around Mr. Li's neck, but rather than knocking him over, she was dangling onto him like a child would to a parent. "Glad you can finally meet, Mr. Li!"
'I think I might know where she got her bubbly personality from.' The orange spiky haired teen said in his mind. "Nice to see you guys are here too! You guys are still waiting on a mission or something?"
"We're actually getting one tomorrow." Ren answered. Entering the conversation, the young huntsman was wearing his usual getup, with the added bonus of an apron that was caked with fresh batter. "My team and I wanted to come here before we leave."
"We just finished making pancakes too!" Nora unwrapped her arms from Li's neck. "You just arrived to get a fresh batch!"
"Pancakes? But we're already in the middle of the afternoon."
"Since when was it a law to have pancakes only in the morning?" Mr. Li asked. "Ren, why don't you and your team relax and talk with your friend some more. Mrs. Parker and I can start handing out the food to everyone."
"Thank you, Mr. Li," Ren said to the man. "We'll help you soon."
"Hey now!" Mr. Li pretended to sound offended. "Call me, Li! You don't need to be so formal with me, Ren."
Breaking off from the group, Mr. Li and Aunt May made their way to the kitchen and left Rito and his friends to themselves.
"That guy," Rito saw as Martin Li left to help serve some food, most of the large group soon followed. "Is he the one in charge of F.E.A.S.T?"
"Yes, Li's family was the one who started the organization when he was young. Now, he is the sole owner of his family's legacy." Answered Ren. "We can discuss the rest later, but for now, why not help us?"
"Sure!" Rito replied happily. As they walked to the kitchen, Rito delved deeper into their mission. "So, what type of mission are you guys about to do tomorrow?"
"It's just a simple grim extermination," This time, it was Nora taking the lead in the conversation. "Most of the missions the staff is giving the 1st years are just either grimm extermination or just investigating anomalies, like with team RWBY investigating the old ruins of Mt Glenn."
'Jaune did tell me about that other team that was an all-girls.' Rito remembered Jaune's description of them right after he told Jaune his place of origin. 'Ruby, the leader of team RWBY…. Wow, here I thought my English was bad. Who in the right mind made up this stuff?'
Ozpin was sitting at his desk, a warm cup of coffee in one hand, a scroll in the other, and a large pile of paperwork not being attended.
Lifting up the cup to take a sip from his cup, Ozpin's nose began to twitch and he soon sneezed so violently he lost his hold on his cup and the hot liquid spilled on his desk.
"That's unsightly." He didn't seem to mind having coffee slowly spreading on his clean desk and seeping into the bottom stack of paper. "Seems like my work was just cut short. Thank you, Coffee."
"The village we're going to is a familiar one," She started to go in length about their mission. "It's a village Ren and I used to live at, even more special about it was that it was the first time we met Li!"
"Seriously? That's some coincidence."
"Actually," A fourth voice, Pyrrha's voice, spoke out to Rito. "Our original mission was for a different village, but Ren spotted one that was part of his childhood, I decided to change our mission and location."
"Does Mr. Li know?" Rito asked Ren and Nora.
"Yes, we told him today and he decided that before we go that we should celebrate the occasion with pancakes." How Ren sounded was different than the usual neutral and tired tone. It was small and would be hard to miss, but Ren seemed to be happy when talking about Li now that the man was back in Ren and Nora's life again. "Nora and I didn't expect much from the village that took us in, it was actually somewhat a common occurrence for villages to get destroyed by grimm. Yet when we met Li and his family, we started to gain some semblance of a normal life."
'This Li guy is something else.' Though Rito just met the man and only exchanged short words, it still gave him a good picture of the guy. 'He's probably also the one who encouraged them to be huntsmen too. Not just them, but it looks like everyone in F.E.A.S.T holds Li in high regards. No doubt about it, I feel like his positive attitude and down to earth nature brings the best out of all these people.'
Soon, F.E.A.S.T had many of the staff and those who lived there celebrate a reunion of old-time friends that lasted till the sun went down. People smiled, laughed, and enjoyed their time with each other. Even though most do not have a home, that day felt like they did and would cherish that moment and many others in the future.
Oblivious of the danger that has already invaded their city.
Set the clock a couple of hours before Rito went to F.E.A.S.T and change to another hero with the same abilities of a spider.
That boy, Jaune Arc, was using his time on the living room computer and used the internet to find some kind of answer to his vision about Vale.
"White Fang," Jaune typed the organization into the search engine. "Hmmm, the guy I saw Blake fight, It's a long shot but…"
Adding the words, 'Bull Faunus', and 'red hair', the links he received were far more than he expected. Switching to images, the pictures shown were also just as many.
'Most of these are blurry,' Despite the images giving a graining picture, Jaune can still see the person was indeed the right man. 'Let's see what one of these links has on this mystery man.'
Clicking on the first link, the website he was now on showed an image of the swordsman and had a small article about him.
"Adam Taurus," He spoke out the name and read the small summary about the man. "One of the few who reformed the White Fang into a radical movement. A key figure in freeing many Faunus from many forced labor camps from minor dust companies that tried to hide their wrongs-"
'Ok, I guess he must be someone who is like Blake, but more proactive. Wait, no, there's more.'
"A killer who has no regard to harming humans-"
'Maybe a bit too proactive.'
"And was also the one to go against the original leader of the White Fang, Ghira Bell-"
'What?'
"What?" Jaune kept reading. "Adam, along with several other members went against Ghira Belladonna original ideals due to how ineffective and even questioned his competence as the leader of the movement. Not much is known about how the chain of command shifted, but it led to Mr. Belladonna to step down and move back to their kingdom, Menagerie, along with other White Fang members who did not like the new organizations change in plans."
'Of course, her father was the leader of the Fang.' He combed his hair with his hands. 'That explains her dang obsession with them. Is she trying to take it back for her dad? I wonder if Ruby and the rest of her team know about this?'
He doubts they know, but Jaune can hope sometimes.
Scrolling down to the bottom of the article, Jaune found another picture of the original White Fang leader. He was an imposing figure, with a short beard and yellow feline eyes that reminded Jaune of Blake. The picture also showed Ghira wearing an open dark violet vest with white fur trim that shows his chest. A pair of long, extended fingerless gloves reached his upper arms, and he wore beige pants and brown leather boots. In addition, he wore a White Fang emblem piece attached to a few leather straps and shoulder pads.
"That emblem looks different." Usually, the symbol Jaune sees on the Fang is an angry beast with scars behind it, but the one he was seeing Ghira wear on his person looked more… Peaceful. "Guess they wanted to change anything that they thought showed weakness. I wonder who replaced him?"
Looking back at the article, the blonde spider started to read again.
"After the older members left, Sienna Khan, was appointed as high leader and alongside her was Adam Taurus. Their campaign against unjust and corrupt business and other high leading officials have spread paranoia and fear. At the same time, their actions have indeed made many changes that have lessened some weight against Faunus. At the cost of no longer holding passive protest and exchanging it for guns and blades, they have shown that they will go to many lengths to fight back against any who oppress faunus."
That was the last sentence of the article everything else only showed images of their new high leader, a female who was a tiger faunus, as well as some other photos of other members that showed a picture of twins that were males and one who was a female faunas with a skin pigmentation that looked like scales.
"I didn't see any of them from my spider sense, just this Adam guy. Maybe they don't know what he's about to do?" Jaune shakes his head. "Can't be, if he did, then his high leader, Sienna Khan, would know about it, she could also be the one who ordered Adam to invade Beacon. But won't that be counterproductive of all the hard work she's done so far? Since it'll cost the lives of faunus too if she did want Beacon and Vale to be attacked by grimm."
'Now that I think about it, I wonder if she knows about Cinder. Could their goals also align to the point of a temporary partnership? Dang it, this just makes me even more worried about the answer. I need to let Qrow know about this, maybe he and his friends could shed some light about this.'
Just as Jaune was about to close the website, he decided to find the name of the person who made this article. After all, it was thanks to this person who made this page that had the names and faces that made Jaune's future sight better to understand.
"Ben Urich," He said the man's name found under the pictures that was taken by him. "I feel like I know that name from somewhere."
'I could ask Betty to help me, she always knows every face that works at the Bugle. Worth a shot, so I guess I'll ask tomorrow.' A second passed and the blonde groaned. "I need to ask Aunt May to unground me. Dang it, I need to talk to her when she gets back home."
Setting that aside for now he closed the web browser and went to his room to prepare for tonight. Regardless if she does or does not trust him enough to go out without her permission, Jaune would make a plan to leave to help Rito patrol the city.
As he entered his room to get his stuff ready, Jaune's eyes wandered to his pet spider who was out of her makeshift den and was staring out of the window.
"Guess you also feel like trouble is about to start." He asked his pet. Walking to her enclosure that was on top of his desk, Jaune removed the top lid and placed his hand near the spider. Without flinching as the arachnid showed hesitation to move onto the welcoming palm, Jaune lifted her out of her enclosure and started to talk to her.
"You know, I never gave you a name. I've been preoccupied with so much stuff that I forgot, but I think now's a good time." Pondering over some names that fit, Jaune snapped his fingers. "I know, I'll call you, Itsy! It's from an old childhood song I learned from kindergarten, you like it?"
"…." The pet spider just stared at the blonde boy.
"Yeah," He let out a small chuckle. "I knew you'd like it."
Looking through the window, Jaune stood in silence as he recounted everything that happened thus far today.
'When Blake gets back, I need to ask her about Adam and her dad. She needs to know about this, not just her either, Ruby and the rest of my friends from Beacon too. Most importantly, I need to find Qrow.'
"Great," He sighed. "Can't really call him, so how can I find him in a big city in one night? I mean, I can always check Beacon, but that's too close to those Atlas ships and I don't really want to take my chances with them again."
"….B.a..r"
"Qrow would probably-scratch that, will definitely be at a bar. Question is, which one?"
"3…0…. Water..st.."
"30 Water St? Why would-" Instantly, Jaune followed the sound of a second voice that sounded like it was right next to him. He knows that there was no one in the house, Aunt May and Rito are at F.E.A.S.T, and if someone did try to break in his spider sense would have picked up something by now.
Leaving the only crazy answer to be the other second living thing in the room.
"No. Just… are you kidding me, right now?" Moving his hand that held Itsy to his face, Jaune stared at her eight eyes and he couldn't help but notice that it looked like she was doing the same to him. "Do you understand me?"
"Do… You… understand…me?" She replied with the same question.
"Oh boy," Not ready for this sudden turn of events, Jaune walked to his bed, sat down, and looked back at his now talking spider pet. "I know I'm called Spider-Man, but even I think this is too much."
"We're home!" Shouted Rito, opening the front door for Aunt May to enter. "Jaune! We brought pancakes, even though it's already evening."
The sound of feet moving from the second floor was a signal for Jaune's appearance as he walked down the stairs.
"Welcome back!" Jaune greeted the two. "How was everything at the shelter?"
"Things were great, Pyrrha and her team were there." Rito told him. "They start their mission tomorrow."
"That's cool to hear." Seeing that Aunt May had some to-go plates in her arms, Jaune quickly went to her side to help. "I got these, Aunt May, you can go and rest in your room."
"Thank you, Jaune." She then had a look of surprise. "Jaune, how is your headache? Is it getting better, you don't look like you're in pain?"
"Like I said this morning, Aunt May. Some Tylenol and a nice meal really fixed my problem." He said, not telling her the real cause of his migraines was from something else entirely. "But enough about me. You had a long day today, so just relax and Rito and I can make dinner."
Giving him a one-armed hug, she ascended upstairs. As soon as she had just two more steps left, she turned around and spoke. "Oh, Jaune, before I forget. I'm done grounding you; I think you had enough with being cooped up in the house."
"Really, Aunt May?"
'Looks like I didn't have to ask her after all. Sweet!'
"Yes, but you're not off the hook just yet." She waved a finger as a warning. "Starting tomorrow, I want you to message me if you plan to stay out past eight. You're already close to being an adult, but you're still going to follow my rules, understand?"
"Yes, Aunt May!" He said to his aunt.
"Good," She took another step and stopped. "You don't have to worry about dinner for me, I'm full after eating pancakes. I'm starting to get tired, so I'll be sleeping early tonight. You boys make sure to not make too much noise. Goodnight!"
As she finally resumed here walking, Jaune could still hear her mutter something under her breath.
"I swear, I wonder how Mr. Li packs so much in him and still looks like he didn't gain a single pound. I suppose that's just youth for ya'."
Waiting for her to leave his sights, Jaune immediately turned to Rito. "You need to see this."
"Ok," He replied. "I was hoping to eat morning pancakes though."
"Take it with you then." Jaune told him.
"Yes!" As he reached for the pancakes, Rito also noticed a problem. "It's cold."
"So?"
"I don't like cold pancakes. Can I heat it up before you show me something?"
"Oh, my go- You know what," Jaune used his hands to gesture his annoyance. "I'll be in my room; you just get what you need and meet me there."
"It'll only take a couple of minutes!" Rito reassured him. "I just need five minutes, trust me."
"I'm here!" Rito entered Jaune's room 15 minutes later. "I was finding the syrup and also decided to add some sliced bananas in the mix too."
"It's fine," He waved of Rito's excuse. "I just need you to listen to what I'm about to ask you."
Not sure what Jaune was about to ask, Rito walked over to the table, sat on the edge, and took a piece of pancake in his mouth. "Mhkay," Rito spoke while chewing. "Ihm hmeady."
Jaune told him how he can now talk to spiders. The response was of Rito choking on a pancake slice, but Jaune thought it was a better response then having none at all.
"That's just half of it, Rito. When I talked to Itsy, my pet spider's name, she told me about this street Qrow was last seen."
"Hold on, let's back it up a bit," Rito made a spinning motion with his finger. "You're telling me, that not only can you see the future, but you can talk to spiders and the spiders can tell you where to find people?"
"To sum things up," Jaune shrugged his shoulders. "Yeah, I guess I can"
"Cool," Rito clicked his tongue. "Another question I have for you is what kind of spider bit you to have such OP powers?"
"Excuse me?" Those questions caught Jaune off guard.
"I'm serious, today you learned that you can see the future."
"I don't even know if it will come to pass yet."
"And just when I stepped out to go to F.E.A.S.T, you now discover the ability to talk to arachnids?" The younger hero shook his head. "Is it just me, or is this way too convenient? That, or it could just be lazy writing."
"I said it before and I'll say it again. I don't know, Rito. Maybe the stress is triggering the biology of my spider DNA to evolve faster to adapt to my situation, or that I could have already had these powers to begin with but I never really paid attention to them, I'll even say that it could be magic for all I care. The only thing I do know, is that I'm going to use these newfound powers to make sure Vale still stands."
"And que motivational music." Rito whispered.
"What was that?"
"I said how will you telling Qrow about something dangerous is about to happen when you don't even know when it will start? I don't know the guy, but with what you told me before, I don't want to meet him, mostly for the off chance he might throw up on me or something more embarrassing."
"That's ok," Getting something out of his desk, Jaune opened his secret case and pulled out his costume. "I don't really want to waste time explaining why I have a sidekick."
"Excuse you, since when?" Rito asked, going to Jaune's closet to get his own spider costume hidden beneath Jaune's clothing.
"My universe, my rules." Putting on the last piece of his suit, the fully dressed hero went to his pet spider. "Let me know when Aunt May wakes up, Itsy."
"Do you know how far your range is for you to talk to spiders?" Rito asked, also now fully garbed in his own spider suit.
"I haven't tried to push my limit to how far," With him recently finding new abilities, Jaune wasn't sure how to properly exercise the scope of his communication with arachnids. "Right now, I'm imagining Vale like a giant web, with me at the center and the spiders are my limbs. If something touches the web, my legs will notify me, which is why if Aunt May wakes up, I can head back here in case she tries to enter."
"That's cool and all, but that didn't answer my question on how far your range is."
Not saying anything, Jaune went to his window, opened it, and looked back at Rito.
"Far enough to go talk to Qrow."
"Would have liked a straight answer rather than you trying to act cool." Rito said under his breath. "Whatever, does that mean while you talk to Branwen Birdman Qrow, I'll be investigating anything related to the White Fang, yeah?"
"That's the plan," Showing great reflexes and agility, Jaune effortlessly leaped out the window and with his momentum swung himself onto the roof. "Though in retrospect it doesn't really sound like a plan."
"Better than having no plan at all." Performing the same feat, both spiders left in opposite directions and started their mission.
In a different part of the city, Qrow Branwen, uncle of Ruby and Yang, brother of she who shall not be named, and brother-in-law to a man who gets more tail than he does-
(Burp~!) A large belch startled the other customers that were sitting next to Qrow, who was already finished with his second bowl of noodles. "Another fresh bottle, good sir!"
The owner of the noodle stand grabbed the empty bottle and placed a cold one into the waiting hand for Qrow to drink.
"Thank you!" The red eyed swordsman tilted the bottle as a kind gesture, only to forget the bottle was open spilling some of its contents onto the wooded counter. "And also, sorry."
Grunting, the old noodle stand owner wiped the alcohol off the counter and went back to serving the other customers.
'I feel like I've seen him before.' His train of thought soon left as he went back to finishing his food.
Lifting his bowl, Qrow ate the remaining noodles and placed the now empty bowl back down. "Thanks for the meal!" He pulled out his wallet, grabbed some lien, placed the right amount under his bowl, and left the noodle stand along with his bottle.
"Well, this is a surprise," An all too familiar voice was heard near a light post near the food stand. "Didn't know you need real food to survive."
Still walking away from the noodle stand, Qrow could hear Spider-Man jumping off his perch and followed in Qrow's footsteps.
"Didn't see you for the past few days." He started to speak now that he had some distance away from other people. "Only hearing your usual schtick of just beating up the bad guys."
"I've had a lead that I wanted to solve by myself for a bit. Something big and it involves the White Fang."
"Wow," Qrow sounded unimpressed. "Did my niece's partner, Blake, finally get to you to be just as crazy about them too?"
"If she was here right now, she would probably be foaming at the mouth for what I'm about to tell you."
"Oh yeah?" Finding an empty bench chair that was underneath a blinking light post, Qrow sat down and took a swig from his bottle. "Well, what did you learn now?"
And so, Spider-Man told him that he discovered Adam Taurus was now in Vale. He also explained how he was able to find Qrow too, but made sure to leave the parts about the destruction of Beacon and Vale. At first, Spider-Man wasn't sure he would want to tell Qrow about his ability to talk to spiders, but he found a loophole to that solution.
"Your semblance to talk to arachnids gave you intel about Adam being in Vale, huh? And you even had your little helpers find me just to tell me about it." Finished with his bottle he set it next to his feet. "Truly, I feel honored. As well as me having the urge to go to a supermarket to buy a can of Raid."
'Thank god,' Spider-Man sighed a breath of relief. 'He bought it!'
"Wish I could talk to birds. Probably would have saved me time from learning how to fly." Qrow started to mutter something about 'Old Man' and 'Wasted opportunity for a due over'.
Just as Qrow kept talking to himself, Spider-Man felt his scroll vibrating in his side pouch. Getting his scroll out to see what message he got, the hooded spider had a text message from some random number.
'It's me, Spider-Rito' Jaune read the message in his head.
'Spider-Rito, are you serious?' He couldn't help but wonder how Rito could come up with these weird names, but continued to read the message.
'Just dropped some White Fang fodder trying to assault a truck driver carrying some dust. Snagged a scroll from one of them and found something you might want to see.'
A second later, Jaune received another message showing a picture of a map that had a circle over a location that he could only assume to be a hide out.
Typing 'Thanks. I'll go check it out.' and hitting send, Jaune received another message from Rito about him 'Looking for more trouble.'
"Hey, Qrow," He got back Qrow's attention by showing him the picture he got from his fellow spider. "There's a Fang hideout not far from here. If we're lucky, they might have something that can help us uncover why Adam is in Vale."
"Alright," Getting up from the bench, the semi-drunk Huntsman picked up his empty beer bottle and with accuracy of a skilled Huntsman was able to toss the bottle into an open trash can that was 40 feet away from where he was standing. "First try."
"You know there was a recycle bin right next to it, right?" Spider-Man ruined Qrow's cool moment. "I feel like you were trying to aim for the recycle bin rather than regular."
"Oh no~!" The Huntsman acted scared. "I'm so scared~!" Qrow dropped his bad acting and rolled his eyes. "Come one, relax it was just a bottle. Who's gonna care if I threw it in the wrong trash can?"
Something did care in the form of a large racoon that had crawled itself out of the trash bin that Qrow threw the bottle in. It then began to make noises that signaled a very unnatural amount of raccoons to get out of the same garbage can. Surveying the area, the horde of now angry racoons spotted the only pair of people, barred their fangs, and started to close in on them.
"It was him." Spider-Man pointed at Qrow.
"It was this guy." Qrow Pointed at Spider-Man.
After escaping their near-death experience from the creatures of the night, Qrow and Spider-Man were now at their desired location. Standing on top of a building that gave them a better vantage point, the two spotted that there were guards holding guns, pipes, and swords walking around their territory.
"They are not organized," Said Qrow. "Their patrolling is sloppy and complacent. Even their posts are too far from each other that they might not notice us coming in their base."
"Must be new recruits. Their bulk is probably newbies acting as their main force, bet the more experienced ones are inside."
"How do you want to play this?" Spider-Man turned to Qrow who then raised an eyebrow at the masked vigilante. "Hey, you invited me to this. Thought I would just have you lead out of courtesy."
"Wow, you're a true gentleman. Truly, I'm jealous of all the people who haven't met you." Moving his head to see what the plan of attack was, Spider-Man looked back at Qrow. "Don't want to leave anything to chance and have them run away. I think it's best If I deal with the ones outside and you sneak inside since you can turn into a bird and fly in without raising too much trouble."
"You sure you want to do that alone? True, there just newbies, but they tend to have dumb luck on their side and aura can only protect you for so long if they spot you." Qrow warned him.
"I can be sneaky when I have to. And if they do see me and try to fire, why do you think I wear this?" Spider-Man motioned to his brightly colored suit.
"To look stupid?" The drunkard didn't even hide his snark.
"Walked into that one." Spider-Man dropped his arms and sighed.
"You really did, Spider-Dud." Taking in some air, the black-haired Huntsman composed himself. "But I can see what you're implying. You make yourself an easier target, but make up for it for being fast enough to dodge bullets. It's like you have eyes in the back of your… back."
Walking close to the edge of the roof, Qrow turned around to have his front side face Spider-Man.
"If we're splitting up, let's make a bet to see who finishes first."
Before Spider-Man could answer, Qrow already allowed gravity to take hold and fell backward. When he was no longer in view, a bird soured high in the air and started to fly to the hideout.
"Make a bet, he says," Doing the same thing as Qrow, the web head backflipped off the roof and landed onto ground level without making any sound. "It's not really a bet when I know I'm gonna win."
Usually at night is when most people would try to sneak in somewhere, they aren't supposed to either rob, sabotage, or kill someone. With the Faunus they tend to not worry about getting a surprise attack when you can see in the dark. That was how they were able to win past battles before, which made them believe that they can never be caught off guard when in their element.
One individual grunt was minding his business, holding his rifle in one hand while the other was on his scroll.
Sending some text messages to someone about him being a 'freedom fighter', the masked poser even went so far as to send a selfie. Making sure to get a good angle and to have it set to 'night mode', the White Fang nobody was making a striking pose in the selfie, only to be petrified to see someone else standing behind him.
"Oh no, am I ruining the shot?" Spider-Man gasped and placed a hand over his mouth. "Here let me take it for you instead."
Before he could even register what was about to happen, the hero delivered a swift blow to the guard's head. The blow was so quick and strong that not even his newly unlocked aura couldn't withstand Spider-Man's punch that easily shattered the aura and incapacitated him.
Just before the unconscious body could hit the floor, Spider-Man caught him with one arm, used the other to snatch the scroll, and took the selfie with him and the passed-out terrorist. "I think that's a nice picture of us, don't you think? I'm sure you're going to have a great story to tell about how you got this when you're in prison."
Tying the man up in webbing and sticking him to the wall, including to bend the rifle just for good measure, Spider-Man did not waste any second cleaning up most of the guards that were outside the perimeter.
Able to see in the dark may be a tactical advantage in the past and the present, but when your faster than the regular person can track, then it's basically useless.
"That's the problem I'm seeing," Spider-Man talked to himself as his body was already getting started on target another guard who was not paying attention to his surroundings. "I'm stopping regular people from doing acts of terrorism... again."
Not even going any closer, Spider-Man shot a web line connecting to the Fang member's back, tugged, and had the no named grunt flying backwards. Not even prepared to scream, the man was caught by his neck, punched, and just like the one before him fell unconscious. Same process of tying withs webs, breaking guns, and doing it all over again until every single guard was decommissioned giving Spider-Man more time with his thoughts.
'Why are they still doing this?' The web head thought he made progress, it showed in the streets and even in high school, yet the so called 'terrorists' he brought down were probably regular people. 'Have I not tried hard enough? Is it because of this Adam guy being in Vale that people are joining them again?'
Setting aside such thoughts, the young arachnid cleared his mind and allowed his newly evolved sense to talk to arachnids to be the forefront of his mind.
Just like with his pet, Itsy. The effect was instant as he could feel small spiders telling him what they see.
'Looks like I got all of them.' Spider-Man gave himself a small pat on the back. 'Bet if I walk inside, I'll see Qrow having trouble with his end of the plan.'
"I wonder if I can reach Itsy from here?" Testing his power, Spider-Man was surprised when he felt the familiar feel of Itsy still in his room. "From where I am, I must be around 25 miles away from home. That's a far distance, but can I push further?"
Focusing more into his stretching his range, the hooded spider could feel his reach expanding, giving him an impression that he could even have the entire city covered in his 'web'.
Suddenly, the familiar tingle from the back of his skull severed his connection and gave Spider-Man a warning about trouble.
"Great," He muttered as his body jumped into the air to avoid a large van bursting out of the warehouse and then landed on top of the roof of said van. "Guess I won the bet. Wonder what my prize is?"
Crawling to the driver side of the van, the hero decided to give a surprise jumps care to the driver.
"Hel-" Was all Spider-Man said as his head moved just a centimeter to the left to avoid a bullet that was fired from the passenger side. "Rude!"
Not wanting to drag this any longer, Spider-Man entered the driver side window feet first, kicking the driver so hard that he was forced out of his seat. It didn't stop there, as Spider-Man's momentum and strength carried the driver to hit the passenger too. Both men then exited out of the other car door and right when they were about to hit pavement, Spider-Man used his web shooters to fire a special blend of webbing and gravity dust.
(FWIP! FWIP!)
The webbing encased the two goons and as they were about to hit asphalt the webbing started to glow an eerie purple light that slowed their impact just enough for them to land without any injuries.
Not yet finished, Spider-Man, while still in midair, fired a small web line to the front of the car, pulled it so he would be not on the hood, and with no hesitation brought his feet down to the road.
Two things happened after his feet were firmly planted on the ground. The first was that the heavy van flipped over due to not being able to withstand the sudden force that halted it and the second was that when van was about to land on its back Spider-Man easily caught it like it weighed absolutely nothing.
"Alleyoop!" Flipping the vehicle back on its tires, the hero brushed his hands together and let out a huff. "Wish they their getaway car was a compact one."
'Wonder what they have in the back of this thing?'
Walking around the back he attempted to open it, but felt the back-door handle was locked.
"Like that ever stopped me," He scoffed, pulling the handle hard enough that the entire door broke off from its hinges. "This stuff inside are-"
The sound of a bird flapping its wings became the sound of shoes running gave Spider-Man the notice of Qrow.
"Spider-Man, that van," Gone was the usual drunken swagger and was replaced with alertness. "They were building-"
"A bomb." Spider-Man finished what Qrow was about to say. "I can guess some of the parts that are scattered around the van can be used for something dangerous, but this-" Spider-Man picked up a piece of paper that were also spread apart along with the mechanical parts. "I understand some of the chemicals and I have no doubt that they were planning to make an explosive large enough to-"
"Blow up a giant hole in the center of the city, so they can have a large train also full of dust to take out some of the populace, while also causing enough negative emotions to have grimm use said giant hole to enter and cause more mayhem." Qrow gave the rest of the details to Spider-Man.
"….." Though Spider-Man's mask doesn't show any expression, underneath it Jaune's eyes bulged out of its sockets that it would have popped out the lenses from the mask. "I was going to say use a bomb to demand something from Vale, but let's go with your theory instead."
"When I was fighting their leader, I saw some documents and a map that had the old tunnel system used from a project involving Mt Glenn. The group that's in Vale now are just half and the other is at the ruins inside the mountain. They wanted to make a large enough entrance so the train can barrel out of it, destroying everything in its path, and cause the dust that they've been stealing to ignite taking out more property and people in the process."
Once the proper authorities arrived to take the Fang to jail and take all the contraband and evidence back to the precinct. It left the two crime fighters a chance for Qrow to give Spider-Man the complete details of what the White Fang was planning.
Where they were now was the same place Qrow met Spider-Man a couple of hours ago.
"Your noodles." Said the old man as he gave one large bowl to Qrow and the other to Spider-Man. Not even questioning why someone like him was here, the old man just brushed it off and went back to working.
"Cool guy," Pulling his hoodie over his head, Spider-Man lifted his mask up just enough to only show his mouth. "Feel like I have seen him from somewhere too."
"Right?" Qrow said. "Are you really that paranoid to not show even a part of your face that you need to hide under your hood? Or is it because underneath your mask you actually have mandibles?"
"No, I just feel self-conscious of how I eat." A lie obviously, but Spider-Man wasn't interested in humoring Qrow's joking. "Can you please get back on topic."
"Just trying to lighten the mood. I am paying for your meal after all." Eating some of his food, Qrow cleared his throat and started to talk more about his findings. "With the training exploding people will start to panic and when the fear spreads throughout the city it will cause the grimm into a frenzy and use the tunnel entrance to breach Vale. That was all the information that I discovered and by the time I was done the guys who were left tried to escape."
"They plan to go that far," Twirling his chopsticks into the bowl, Spider-Man watched as his food continued to spin. "But why do such carnage when it'll affect humans and Faunus?"
"I'm not wasting my brain cells trying to figure out what their grand plan is. I have the drinking to do that for me." Proving his point, Qrow reached for his hip flask and drank whatever contents it had left. "Thankfully, it seemed like we stopped them before they could make the bomb, but that's only half the problem solved."
The chopsticks in Spider-Man's hands stopped moving.
"One of the teachers has a team of 1st years with him exploring the ruins inside the mountain. I can't make contact due to the interference the mountain has, so I messaged my boss and we can plan to leave before the enemy realizes their friends are captured."
Qrow did leave the fact that the team of 1st years conceited of his two nieces, Yang and Ruby, but what Qrow didn't know was that Spider-Man already knows about them.
'I've been pushing back these thoughts for a while,' Lifting the chopsticks with the noodles into his mouth, Spider-Man recalled what his future sight showed him. 'This could be what the vision was telling me!'
"When do you plan to leave?" Spider-Man asked Qrow.
"Depending on how fast he calls me." He replied. "My guess is that he's talking with the head honcho that's in charge of the Atlas fleet hanging around Vale's airspace. After their little talk about what they plan to do he'll call and tell me the details. Why, you plan to join us?"
"Obviously I do!" The hooded hero got up from his chair.
"That's a stupid idea." Qrow wasn't even phased at how Spider-Man balled his hands into fists. "Take it from a guy who has a semblance of bad luck. It sounds nice to have all the good guys storm the mountain, take down the Fang, and a happy ending for justice!" The red eyed huntsman made a noise that sounded like a laugh and a scoff. "That's just a fast way to an early grave. We just made things all the worse now that we found out their plan. I'm betting that as soon as we think we're about to win, the rug under our feet will be pulled and we fall on our asses. It's better to keep some of us here in case they might have a backup plan. Hell, I'm sure that my group is probably going to prepare for the attack just in case."
Qrow was about to get some more noodles only to find out he had none. Lifting the bowl to drink what's left the drunk swordsman looked back at Spider-Man.
"Don't forget that we also have the real danger in Beacon."
"Cinder." Also having no more noodles, Spider-Man poured what's left into his mouth. "I almost forgot about her! She must be using them as some kind of distraction!"
"Took you long enough to finally notice." Taking another drink from his flask, Qrow felt the vibration of his scroll. "Finally got a message." Opening his scroll, Qrow read whatever was sent to him and sighed. "Duty calls. Seems like we're getting started now."
"Already!? Wait, what time is it?"
"3am," Putting lien on the counter, the two walked away from the noodle stand. "Need to start preparing to get ready for any more surprises. I need to head back and see what evacuations will take place if anything goes south, while at the same time the Huntsmen who are away will be going to Mt Glenn to support some of Atlas soldiers to ambush the remaining White Fang."
"Do you need my help?"
"Can't really have you joining me in Beacon with how you're still going against the law."
"Of course," Spider-Man sighed, yet still felt better knowing he stopped that horrible future. "Well, I think I'm done for tonight. Glad you helped me tonight, Qrow. Hope everything works out tomorrow."
"Don't you want to have some kind of contact in case you need help?" He asked Spider-Man.
"Don't worry about that," Spider-Man jumped high enough to reach the top of a light post. "You guys have your own network and I got mine. I'm sure we'll find each other when we need to."
"Good Morning you two~!" Like every morning, Aunt May greeted the two young boys with a vibrant smile and a plate of freshly cooked eggs and bacon. "I can't stay too long, Mr. Li needs some help at F.E.A.S.T, so I left some extra lien so you two can get some pizza for lunch and dinner."
"Thanks, Aunt May!"
"Thanks, Mrs. Parker!"
A couple more minutes of talking and soon the lady of the house departed leaving Rito and Jaune.
"Aahhh~!" Jaune and Rito leaned back in their chairs.
"Man~! Last night was a workout!" Rito stretched out his arms above his head. "While you were getting help with Qrow, I had to deal with crime on my own. You still haven't told me everything about what happened, Jaune."
"Remember my vision, the one with Vale on fire? I managed to prevent it from happening." And so, Jaune gave Rito the run down on the location he got from Rito was also the one that held plans to have grimm breach the city and that Qrow and his friends are now handling the situation. "As we speak, Huntsmen and Atlas soldiers are dealing with the White Fang and the other half is already crippled thanks to Qrow and I stopping them from making the bomb. All thanks to you sending me the location, Rito!"
"Didn't even think it would be that easy." Rito said, astonished that there was nothing involving large scale damage to Vale. "Thought there would be more impact, but to know that we stopped it so soon, kind of feels too easy."
"I know how you feel, Rito."
Jaune and Rito sat in relative silence when Jaune decided to change the subject.
"By the way, did your device start working or maybe act up?" The blonde asked. "I'm sure it must have started to work."
"The D-dial is still working, but I don't know where to start." It's already been a week and Rito was starting to have thoughts of fiddling around with it. Hoping he can recreate the same situation that made him go to Jaune's dimension. "I'm kind of worried that my friends haven't found me yet. Maybe the time here is different from mine? Like, since it's been a week here in your world, my world probably only passed a couple of hours?"
"Dimension hopping is hard to understand."
"Tell me about it." The younger hero sank deeper in his chair, now even more depressed.
"How about we go to the mall? You haven't been there and Aunt May did leave us some lien."
Rito sat up straight. "Seriously? What about…."
"The huntsmen know where the train will be heading, so we can walk by and keep watch before we go somewhere else. Besides, we need to focus on your problem too." A thought crossed Jaune's mind about calling Whitley, seeing he is the only person he knows who might be able to help. 'I held off telling Rito I know Iron Man in this world on the off chance he could be some spy for some enemy. Thinking back now, I have no choice if I want to help Rito get home.'
"Come on, I feel like we need to get our minds away bust with something else for the moment."
"I guess you're right. I'm sure the Huntsmen and Atlas soldiers can handle the rest."
In some other location, Qrow was doing his usual scouting by using sitting in a bar that was positioned near the city square. While he was drinking, a lot of course, he made sure that he had a clear view of what's happening outside.
'Oz and Glynda are at Beacon keeping the maiden safe. Jimmy already sent out some of his men to the mountain, including Oz messaging the teachers who are out with the students on missions to also help. Leaving a good size in the city to protect the people in case the train really does arrive.' Placing a hand on his weapon for reassurance, Qrow looked down at the glass of beer. 'Ruby, Yang, I know you girls are capable if you work together with your team, but I still hope you two are safe. I do know Ruby told me her partner was Winter's little sister, I wonder if Ironwood told her the news. Does that mean she'll be here in Vale?'
Drinking the entire glass in one go, the huntsman put the empty beer glass down and the barkeep replaced with another cold one.
'Those tunnel systems should be closed off since Grimm invaded the village inside the mountain. That means the White Fang must have been digging the tunnel that lead to Vale. That means, if we can cut off their escape from the mountain and when they use the tunnels that lead them to here, we would already be moving to arrest them. It's simple, efficient, and even Jimmy is alright having Oz take the lead on this operation, so why?'
Once more, Qrow chugged his entire glass of beer and once again the bartender gave him another one.
'Why do I feel like this is too easy?' Perhaps it was due to having a semblance of misfortune he has started to feel that this whole scenario seems like a calm before the storm. 'I feel like we're in a commercial and that as soon as it's over its back to crappy reality.'
Ozpin already assumed that the plan Cinder had formulated was to use the White Fang to make a breach in Vale and let the grimm run free as a distraction. It was even possible it could have worked with how most of the Huntsmen were away on mission with how a rise of grimm started to attack villages, but it was likely due to Salem attempting to have most of Vale's defenses lowered to have her minion have an easier time getting the maiden.
'Too bad we still can't do anything since she and her goon squad are acting as 'model' students. I'm sure she also knows that she's on thin ice too, so we're both treading on how we can trick the other in making a mistake.'
Scarlet eyes drifting to his scroll that was on the table, Qrow saw the digital time being 12 in the afternoon. The teams departed as soon as Qrow told Ozpin the bad news and so far, they haven't received a message from them.
"Maybe they actually caught them already?" Qrow said to himself. "Or maybe they are having a fight right now." He then combed his hair that was falling over his eyes back to their original position. "Now I really wish I was there helping."
'This should probably be my last, don't want to drink too much. For now, at least.'
"Thanks for the drinks." He said as he placed the correct amount of lien and walked out the bar. "Feel like I have seen that old man before. Maybe he has a twin brother?"
Walking to the center of the city square, Qrow looked to the sky and then all around him to notice something wrong.
"There's not a lot of birds today." It was only people walking around without a care in the world filling the air with their loud talking and obnoxious voices.
The sound of people complaining about their day.
Kids screaming at their parents.
Couples talking about their undying love or about how they hate each other.
Friends laughing and having a good time.
All of these overlapping to a point that even Qrow couldn't stand this amount of noise. Such loud talking was soon silenced when something unexpected happened.
Today felt like any other day for a Sunday, people went to church, enjoyed their weekend, and no one was prepared when all around the city started to explode.
Inner parts of the city were separated from the outer suburbs making it easier as the grimm was heading to both directions as most of the huntsmen who were in the center of it all are now surrounded in every direction.
It was not made in random locations, but in a wide circle that the people who were flying in planes could see that the city of Vale was now trapped in a circle of fire. As if hell itself chose today to finally start the apocalypse as the demons that played underneath their feet soon started to rise out of their dark world and into the light.
Panic, fear, and self-preservation sprouted within the hearts of the people their negative emotions gave the grimm more motivation to seek their prey faster.
Like dominos falling, the people who were trapped had no choice but to run to the center making it harder for the huntsmen to fight grimm and also protect innocent lives.
Same was said for Ironwood and his fleet, since their forces were slipping and could not assist their comrades on the ground for their problem was the grimm in the sky attempting to land in the city.
Meaning that those who were able to fight were on their own until the group that left to Mt Glenn would arrive to help.
"Oz!" Hearing the other end pick up, Qrow was only relieved for but a second and then turned his concentration on a beowulf that tried to attack him. Sidestepping to avoid a claw that was aiming to slash Qrow's midsection, the beast tried to bite his head off only to be greeted by a blade being plunged right in its throat. "Is the maiden ok? Did Cinder start attacking?"
"No, she is not here nor is her team." As always, Ozpin held no emotion of hesitance or anxiety. "I checked security and it shows that they are in the city defending the people. I'm headlining Amber just in case. I already sent our senior students and some of our staff to help."
"And Jimmy?"
A boarbatusk charged at Qrow who's back was turned, but it was soon crushed by a fallen nevermore who was gunned down by an Atlas airship.
"Taking care of the airborne threat. With so much negativity permeating in the air, James has all hands-on deck trying their best to keep most of the pressure off of us."
"What about Mt Glenn? Did we get news on their end?"
"No," Just one word made Qrow lose his balance at the implications of what's happening at the mountain could be just as worse. "We have not gotten an update and we fear that they might be fighting their own battle at the moment. All we can do now is hold out long enough until more help arrives."
"Of course, it comes down to that." Hanging up his scroll, Qrow used his free hand to take out his flask and took a few chugs of alcohol. "Can't really do much, but to just embrace the suck!"
Dashing to a pack of beowolves that surrounded a group of people, Qrow twirled harbinger and started to change its form into a scythe.
One of the monsters made the first attack and opened its massive mouth to take a bite out of their prey. Jumping over the grimm, Qrow swung his scythe down at the grimm, the curved tip of harbinger stabbing the roof of the beowulf's open maw.
Speed, momentum, and the weight of Qrow combined into a large swinging arc that made the grimm be tossed into the air. And with how sharp harbinger was it also sliced the upper part of the beowulf's face as its body collided with its fellow brethren.
The force knocked over 2 beowolves off their hind legs and were soon impaled by an ursa grimm that was busy dealing with its own huntsmen. The remaining group of beowolves halted their advance as a new threat appeared in front of them.
Shifting the scythe back to a sword, Qrow placed the dull side on his shoulder and used his other hand to count how many more was left.
"1, 2, 3, 6, 9… damn it feels like they're multiplying!"
"Um, mister?" A tiny voice was heard next to Qrow snapped him out of his confusion. The huntsman looked down to see a short girl with long brown hair tied in a ponytail with bright brown eyes looking up to him with no fear compared to the other civilians around behind her. "There's only 3 monsters in front of you?"
"Hmm, good to know." Noticing the wolf grimm are getting in to action, Qrow took a glance at the bystanders who were frozen in fear, all of them except for the girl. 'I'm already starting to like this girl. She doesn't look like she reached the age with double digits, but has grown a pair of girl balls compared to the adults.'
"Listen, little kid."
"My name is Sofia."
"Listen, little kid, Sofia. Since you got a good head on your shoulders, I'm going to need your help to lead the rest of the civilians to safety. I'll take care of these dogs and it'll make it easier for me to handle them with no one else around, ok?"
Once more she impressed him by giving him a firm nod and a determined glare.
"Good, now then," Lifting the sword off his shoulder, Qrow dashed to the grimm who then in turn did the same. "GO!"
All three bipedal grimm pounced at the same time, but as they were in the air Qrow shifted his weight down to the ground and slid underneath them. As they were about to land on the ground, Qrow managed to take a few swipes at their legs, so when they landed hind legs first their injuries made them land on all fours.
Not finished with their attack, the middle beowulf charged at Qrow in the middle, while the left and right beowolves attacked his sides.
Usually the common thing to do was to jump up high in the air to avoid them, but when you have the ability to change into a small bird you tend to have some creativity.
Shifting himself into a crow in the right moment the three werewolf's heads slammed into each other. Qrow then turned back into a human and as he rose to full height, he made sure to swing his sword around himself that made him into a top of death.
The three beowolves were knocked onto their backs, with the one who tried to charge in the middle soon stopped moving on the account that he had more damage compared to the other two.
With only two left, Qrow shifted his weapon to a third form that had the blade push forward to have the hilt of his blade now becoming a barrel of a gun and fired a couple of rounds into them. Four shots, two for each of them in the chest, and they too quickly stopped moving and then disintegrated.
"So cool!" The little kid, Sofia, said in awe at the display of power, skill, and technique Qrow showed.
"Why are you still ?!"
"I just came back if you needed help." How she said it made Qrow know she didn't believe in her own words.
"Who taught you how to lie, kid? You need to-" A dark shadow passed the two above them and just as quickly it made its presence known. A dark creature, half lion and half eagle, lowered its flight path and used his front claws to snatch Sofia.
"Help me!" She screamed as the griffon flapped its wings to raise it in the air.
Qrow was about to turn into a bird to catch up to it only to smirk when he saw a familiar blur of red and blue barreling at the griffon.
(TWIP! TWIP!)
Large nets of webbing latched onto the griffon's wings, making it difficult to stay in the air. Dropping its prey and focusing on flying, Sofia screamed as she plummeted to the ground and was saved as Qrow caught right before she landed into the cement floor.
No longer holding a hostage, it gave Spider-Man a chance to shoot more webs onto the griffon. Forcing it to land now that it was in a large cocoon, Spider-Man pounced over it and with a mighty punch caved in the skull of the grimm into bone powder.
Grimm dust evaporated out of the cocoon and Spider-Man went to check on the girl who was saved by Qrow.
"Wow! That," Spider-Man raised a thumb at what he just killed. "Was a big chicken!"
"Glad to see you- Did you just get shorter?"
Maybe Qrow was still somewhat drunk, but even he can see that Spider-Man looked different. Aside from the new costume Spidey was wearing- 'I swear, the guy gets into different costumes, like my niece, Yang, when she's at the mall.'-There was a very noticeable height difference from the last time he saw him, which was only last night!
"No, no, you're drunk as usual!" Spider-Man brushed off Qrow's suspicion with the task at hand. "The White Fang set up a distraction. They wanted us to find that bomb and the plan regarding the train in Mt Glenn. It was a way to split our power and allow them to set up their real plan!"
"How did you know all this?"
"No time to explain!" Shooting a web line to a building, Spider-Man looked at Qrow. "I'm attempting to seal the holes around the city! You need to get that girl to safety and tell your friends what I told you!"
Pulling the line to launch him into the air to start web swinging. The huntsman and the little girl were now all alone with chaos and fire all around them.
"Your name is Qrow?" She asked him.
"Yes, my name is Qrow." He told her. "Come one, we can talk while I get you to somewhere safe."
"Alright!" Gasping in surprise when she was suddenly picked up by him. Sofia wrapped her arms around him as he sprinted. "BY the way, my full name is Sofia Mantega!"
"Your last name is Mantega? That's funny, I feel like I know that name from somewhere!"
"Man, that was close!" Rito said as he web swinged around the city. Webbing up grimm and helping people get to a safe place as he headed towards the holes made by the large explosions. "Thought Jaune said he would be too drunk to notice!"
'Speaking about Jaune.'
Shooting webbing to make him reach the top of a tall tower, Rito looked over the chaotic city in dread.
"Jaune wanted us to split up to cover ground, but even I know that's idiotic for what he's about to do!"
Nose diving off the tower, Rito felt the air pressure touching his mask as the ground below him started to get closer and closer. Spider sense kicking, Rito's body was soon taken over by his danger sense, moved his right arm, ejected a web line, and soon his entire body was in full swing again.
"I mean, he wants me to help the huntsmen seal the holes, but he's going to fight Adam by himself!"
Hope you guys like the chapter, it kind of took some thought about how to deal with the breach, but I feel like I got the scene played out well. I would also like to apologize that this was not published last month. I had this ready yesterday, but I kind of lost time hanging out with some friends.
I always thought that Cinder's first attempt about using the breach would be a failure since Atlas was there, so I made sure I added them right away and even made sure the huntsmen were also ready too. The thing is, I also thought it was kind of too easy, seeing as how the breach involved just the train punching a hole in the city. Yes, there were other holes made by the grimm, but I felt like it would be better if it was set up in a giant circle of explosives that trapped people inside with grimm attacking them. Like a giant bowl with nowhere to run and even with Atlas air fleet they have to deal with the flying grimm before they can send drop ships to assist.
I also wanted to make it a challenge for the huntsmen and Atlas since they sent some of their men to Mt Glenn, but I'll make sure to reveal what's happening to them later. What I'm trying to say here, is that this was not the vision Jaune saw, cause we all know the real end of Vale is during the Vytal festival.
Speaking about Jaune's future sight. I did say before that I'm using Kaine (Scarlet Spider) as the powers for Jaune. One of Kaine's powers was the ability to see into the future, just like how he saw the future of MJ's death in one of Spider-Man's story arcs. He also had the ability to talk to spiders and even control them, but the powers Juane has are still new and he has yet to fully understand them. Meaning, Jaune will have a teacher to help him learn his spider powers. In a way that he will be far more skilled and powerful, rather than him trying to learn on his own.
What I'm saying is that he will have his own Madam Web.
Hope you also liked how Spider-Rito will be in the center stage for helping deal with the breach and I hope you guys will enjoy the fight against Jaune and Adam.
Speaking about Adam, I'm sure most of you have seen Faunus with wings and skin pigmentations that should be considered heteromorphic, but to me I'm talking about how if say a snake Faunus should have the lower body of a snake, like a lamia, that is my interpretation of a heteromorphic form. It always interested me on the biology and science on Faunus and Humans in RWBY and I tried to convey that with Doctor Connors who is pushing the boundaries on what makes Faunus and Humans so different and at the same time the same.
Make sure to like, fav, and comments regarding the chapter, so I can better explain it next time. Make sure to also check out my Beta, Ahosei, and his stories too! Not to mention Spider-Rito's story too! Thank you!
[Omake: Lake of Fire]
"Dad," Harry walked into his father's study room. "Can I go out today?"
"No, Harry." Norman Osborn said, not even looking at his son as his attention was on his computer screen. "Your still suspended, not to mention grounded, until tomorrow, so I suggest you use what time you have left and study. Just because you're not at school, doesn't mean you'll slack off and do nothing."
"Yes, dad." Harry's face turned sad and was closing the door.
"Son." Norman, sensing Harry's plight, got away from his desk, went to the door, and placed a hand over Harry's shoulder. "Please know that I'm not doing this to punish you. I'm doing this, cause my parents did not do this to me, because they were never there for me. Why I'm so hard on you is because I care for your wellbeing."
"I know dad." He smiled. "And thank you."
"I'm about to finish up some paperwork for some projects for next week. How about you, your mother, and I play some board games? It's been awhile since we did a family activity."
Face lighting up at the idea, Harry raced to the living room to let his mom know.
"Harry, Harry, Harry," Norman sighed in disappointment. "Just a few honeyed words and you believe anything people say. This is why most of your 'friends' used you, well, other than your real friend, Jaune."
Walking back to his desk, Norman went back to typing.
"What's the status? The plan should have happened hours ago." Was what he sent to someone and was soon answered.
"The White Fang has failed to set up the explosive."
"It was doomed to fail regardless. With Atlas's military here, Ozpin's group already knowing Cinder's arrival, and having no back up plan in case it failed showed that it comes down to us seeing things through."
"Plan B?"
"Yes." With his last message sent, Norman walked to his office window and stared at the bustling city of Vale. "It's time for this kingdom to finally cull the weak from the strong."
Putting a hand into his pocket, Norman grabbed his scroll and with a simple press of a button the city became a warzone.
Parts of the city ignited in smoke and fire, sounds of screams and screeching metal could be heard from every direction. Grimm roaring in bestial rage scurried around the streets and above all the carnage and mayhem, Norman looked at it all in his high-top office as if it was just another Sunday.
"I wonder what game Harry will pick out?" Norman asked nonchalantly as he continued to stare outside to see people screaming in terror. "Hope it's monopoly. I do love picking the thimble."
