Chapter 14: Change in Leadership
Cassandra's POV
I looked down at my new leg. It was a long metal pole with a spring balancer on the bottom.
"It will take some time to get used to, but you should be about to walk with it soon." Hiccup said as he put away his tools.
"Thank you, Hiccup." I said as I looked over at Shade, my baby Razorwhip.
Shade was my seventh Razorwhip dragon I had helped raise. After I was taken in by the Wingmaidens. I joined their ranks and started raising Razorwhip babies till they can see.
I sat up and whistled for her. She flew over and attached herself to my back.
"So, what's our next move?"
Hiccup looked at me. "Your next move is to rest and get used to that leg. Having a prosthetic leg takes time to get used to. Believe me, I know."
"But, the war? I'm needed. I'm the Commander of the armies."
"Don't worry about it. We'll find someone to take your place til you get used to that leg."
"But…"
"That's an order, Commander." Hiccup said as he looked over at her. "I'm sorry." He then left.
I just stood there in silence. I couldn't believe it. After all I did for this Resistance, I'm getting set aside. Again.
I limped out to look down at the base below. Tears welled up in my eyes. I signaled Shade to fly. I flew to the far training grounds, that were empty.
"Why must someone else have the glory?" I whispered
Guess we all are born with parts to play
Some of us are stars, and some are just in the way
I know I was meant for glory
But that's never what my story brings
And yet I keep on waiting
When you have the passion and the drive
You expect your moment center stage to arrive
I show up with heart a blazing
Ready to achieve amazing things
But I'm left waiting in the wings
I hear my cue
And yet I'm kept there, waiting
Know what to do
And still I stand there, waiting
It's always someone else who sings
While I'm left waiting in the wings
And so I keep on keeping on
My chances come and then I blink and they're gone
Always overlooked unfairly
While pretending that it barely stings
But it stings, yes it stings
And I'll shed no tears
I'll only keep on waiting
If no one cheers
Well, I can keep on waiting
Who cares how loud
The silence rings
You'll find me waiting in the wings
Shade nuzzled my face. I smiled and pet her.
"I will be ready for my time again."
…
Hiccup's POV
I walked back up to the Club house, feeling terrible. Cass didn't deserve that. But she needed time to heal. I had no other choice.
I walked in to the Clubhouse and saw the rest of the team looking down at the maps of the Kingdoms, except for Rapunzel, who was sitting in the corner, staring into a corner.
"What's going on?" I asked.
"We're just looking at the map of Arendelle." Jack said. "We were trying to see where the first outpost will be."
I nodded and sat down near Rapunzel. I grabbed her hand.
"I heard what happened. You doing ok?" I asked.
She wiped the tears from her eyes and looked at me.
"Yes." She mumbled.
"I may not know how it feels, but I want you to know, I'm here for you."
"Thank you." She whispered.
Just then, McThorn and Heather walked in.
"So, what's the plan with Arendelle?" Heather asked as she sat down at her chair.
Elsa looked down at the map. "I think we should…"
"I have an idea."
We all looked up to see a man with a kilt and blue body paint on. He looked at Merida.
"Merida."
Merida chuckled slightly. "Cole Macintosh. You've got a lot of nerve showing yourself to me. Especially with my husband sitting here."
Macintosh laughed. "Oh, Merida. I did what I had to try to get you to marry me. It may have been shady, but I don't regret it. It showed me what kind of woman you are."
I felt an anger I haven't felt for a long time start to burn. I remember when Merida told me of this guy. How he tried to have her killed when she turned him down after a proposal.
"Anyway, I see you are missing a member of your War Council, your majesties."
"She lost her leg, you jerk." Anna retorted.
"Yes, unfortunately because of your half baked plan to take back Berk. And how did that go? Oh right, It's gone."
The anger in me reached a boiling point and I got up and started stomping over to Macintosh, unclipping my sword. Before I reached him, Jack grabbed me.
"Breathe, Hiccup. Don't do anything you'll regret."
I took a deep breath, letting the anger subside. I glared at Macintosh.
"That was my home. Our peoples home for generations. Show some respect." I turned around and sat back down.
Macintosh nodded. "Apologies. What I'm trying to say is, I have an idea so that we can take back Arendelle easily."
McThorn sat back. "Well, let's hear it."
Macintosh smiled. "We use her." He said as he pointed at Elsa."
"Me?" Elsa looked confused.
"Let me take the rest of you back a few years. Queen Elsa here didn't have her powers under control. In fact you can say in one incident, she lost control. On her coronation night, she brought winter to the kingdom in the middle of summer. It was only the love of her sister that she was able to unfreeze Arendelle."
Anna looked over at Elsa. I could see Elsa was getting uncomfortable with the topic.
"Now, if we plan to get an upper hand on Zika and her people, we're going to have to play a little dirty. I suggest, we take Elsa to the fjord of Arendelle, and have her freeze Arendelle again."
Silence came to the room. Macintosh looked at everyone, waiting for an answer.
Then everyone started talking at once.
"Absolutely not!"
"We can't risk it!"
"How dare you!"
"What is wrong with you!"
I stood and walked over to the table. Everyone fell silent.
"We are not doing that. Elsa is a member of this team, not some weapon."
"But think of the benefits." Macintosh said. "The people already know that she can unfreeze it. We can get them to join us…"
"Or they could turn on us!" Jack said standing behind Elsa, his hands resting on Elsa's shoulders.
"No. They won't, we can get them to…"
"We said no, Macintosh. Now, if you want to temporarily replace Commander Cassandra, you're not starting on the right note. Come back to us with a good plan and we'll see what we can do." I said as I walked out of the War Room.
…
Elsa's POV
Everyone left the War Room except Rapunzel, Macintosh, and me. I was still in shock from what happened. Part of me wanted to freeze this idiot solid, but then I just wanted to slap him.
He looked at me. "Elsa, you know this is the only way. The people will turn to you. We can take back your home." He walked away.
I looked over at Rapunzel.
"What a jerk, right."
"Yeah." Rapunzel said softly.
She honestly looked awful. She had circles under her eyes, her hair wasn't as brightly as it usually was, and the cheery personality wasn't there anymore.
"How you holding up?" I asked.
"I'll be ok." She grabbed a blanket from nearby, wrapped it around herself, and walked out.
Foe the rest of the day, Macintosh's words echoed in my head. How I could save my people.
They knew of my power. They survived it once. They can again. But they did side with Hans, who tried to kill me. But after I thawed it, they accepted me like never before. I trusted them so I knew they trusted me.
As night fell, I made my decision. I found Macintosh in the Commander tent.
I opened the flap.
Macintosh looked up from the map he was looking at.
"Your majesty?"
"Hi. Can I sit?"
"Yes, of course." He pulled over a chair.
I looked around as I sat. "So you came up with plan?"
"Yes, I suggested a strike forces come across Arendelle's lands from the east and the west, meet in the middle, and head south to Arendelle."
"Oh. That could work."
He leaned against his table. "So, what can I do for you?"
I took a deep breath. "I'll do it."
"Oh, that's great."
"But I have one condition."
"Name it."
"You'll have Heather have her agents warn the people of the freeze, so they can prepare."
"Done. I'll go talk to her right now. Meet me at the stables. We'll go tonight." Macintosh smiled and walked out of the tent.
…
I walked up to the stables to see Macintosh with a few soldiers I didn't recognize.
"It's done, your majesty. Heather sent out her Messengers to tell her agents across Arendelle to warn the people."
"Good."
"Shall we?"
A carriage with two dragons strapped to it pulled forward.
"This is new." I said.
"It helps to be the Commander." He said as he opened the door.
We got in and the carriage took off.
