Irina Sokolova, District One mentor

Charm was one of those people who thought they knew everything and were very "mysterious" and "deep". I could tell by the way she was looking down her nose at me and not saying anything in a way that clearly indicated she wanted me to ask why she wasn't saying anything.

"You ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?" Majesty asked. He had a look in his eyes that I'd seen before in Careers that killed one too many people and weren't just doing it to stay alive anymore.

"Are you trying to scare me or something? You know I've been through the Games, right?" I asked.

"Whatever. Like you can help either of us," Charm said.

"Fine." I got up and walked toward the door. "I'll go in my room and eat bonbons all day."

Ava Hanson, District Two mentor

It was weird, Pray taking the year off. I guess she was finally getting her fill of the Games. It didn't seem possible for her but maybe once your daughter goes through it it isn't as fun. But it was cool hanging out with my goddaughter, though Enobaria wasn't a kid anymore either.

"So you've seen inside lots of dead bodies, right?" Marley asked. She saw my face and backpedaled. "It's not weird, I promise. I just like dead bodies, like in a science way."

"Yeah, I saw a few," I said.

"I'm sorry, but that is really weird," Joseph chimed in.

Gidget Ford, District Three mentor

Jurrien looked at me with a hauntingly familiar expression that turned my stomach before he even spoke.

"What do you do if you get Reaped and you have a kid?" he asked.

"I mean.." I started. I died, I didn't want to finish. But Jurrien already knew. He started wiping at his eyes and then I was wiping at mine and then we were both crying.

"Are you two..." Theta started, tentatively putting out an arm to pat Jurrien and nervously pulling it back. "You okay? Can I... get you some water or something?"

Vera Busattil, District Four mentor

My leg jiggled under the table as I sat not looking at Beth. My baby was here. My baby was on the train right now, just a few cars away. I looked up when I realized Beth had said something and I hadn't noticed.

"You don't have to train us or anything," Beth said. "I know you're supposed to but we can just hang out with the other mentors. We won't tell or anything."

I ran out of the train car without another word.

Caio Sagres, District Four mentor

How was I supposed to concentrate when Vera's daughter was in the Games? How could I train Laken to win the Games when that meant my friend Vera would lose her daughter? It was one thing to put my own life on the line. I couldn't imagine hurting someone's kid... or I guess I could. But that was a long time ago.

"You got something on your mind or something?" Laken asked, not rudely. "You gonna train me?"

"I... don't really know."

Meenah Turbine, District Five mentor

I was such an awkward Victor, to be honest. I won by just... not dying. I really didn't know how to teach people to live. Galvan was already a swimmer and Wren was already a runner. They both were going into the Games with more than I had.

"Okay so here's the deal. I don't really have anything to tell you about the Games. What I am really good at is getting tons of sponsors..."

Lancia Audren, District Six female

Always nice being the only lucid Victor from Six. But at least this year was different. This year I had way bigger problems.

"So me and Valencia are allying-"

"We are not allying."

"This is our chance to get back together!"

"We are not getting back together." Valencia held up a hand in front of Romeo's face and leaned forward to get my attention. "So anyway I have a baby can someone check on her? My roommate's watching her but she has a job."

"Come on, don't be like that," Romeo pushed Valencia's hand down.

"So, you two know each other?" I asked, just trying to figure out what in creation was going on.

"Yeah. He kidnapped me."

Loki Saberhagen, District Seven mentor

"I would like to make allies," Dahlia announced. "I'll pick the strongest outliers. But not the smartest ones. I want to be the smartest."

"Okay, that's a start," I offered. "How are you going to get them to ally with you?"

"No one says no to me," Dahlia said.

I had to ask. "What happens if they do?"

"They just don't," Dahlia said. When I first met Dahlia I thought it was nice to have someone who wasn't scared of me for a change. I was starting to think Dahlia wasn't scared of me because she was the scary one.

Hades Rodriguez, District Seven mentor

"Did you see my District partner? She's really pretty," Timber said. "Do you know if she has a partner? Like, a romantic one?"

"Huh, I don't know. I'll have to ask Loki. Or you could just ask her, I guess," I said. Being a young Tribute was a nightmare but being a young Victor was kind of cool. It felt like I got a new friend every year. And then they died, so that wasn't the fun part.

"But I guess I should focus on the Games," Timber said. "I want to learn how to throw knives, since I already know how to throw axes. And also I think I should make some allies. Do you know if Dahlia has any allies?"

Tillo Peters, District Eight mentor

A moth. My mentee was a moth. Well, one of them. The other was a model.

"So, Mr... Mothra, what are your plans for the Games?" I asked. Because when you're in crazy town, you might as well embrace the crazy.

"Avoid bright lights?" Kade joked.

"Well yeah, if they burn me. Wouldn't anyone? But actually I plan to get to know everyone and maybe make allies. Also it's not very nice to comment when people look funny. You're lucky I love myself," Mike said.

"I think I can get lots of sponsors since I'm a model," Kade said. She looked down. "But maybe not, I guess. It didn't keep me out of the Games."

Randy Mills, District Nine mentor

It was going to be a tough year. I had a blind boy and a girl who shone so bright it was unbearable to think she was about to be snuffed out. Couldn't there be some kind of rule about that? Didn't it used to be that disabled people got help? I sure wouldn't mind some of my tax money going to people who couldn't work most jobs since they couldn't see. And they should be exempt from the Games. Didn't they have enough problems? And Amaranth... kids her age should be getting into mischief and enjoying themselves. They shouldn't be in the Games.

Calvary Warsaw, District Ten mentor

"Wow. I break up with my boyfriend and a week later I get Reaped. Not a good week for me," Rainbow said.

"How do you have a boyfriend? You're twelve years old," I said.

"Fourteen!" she said.

"And how old was he? Twelve?" I asked.

Rainbow looked up proudly. "Eighteen. I'm very mature for my age."

"Hmm," I said. "And how mature is an eighteen-year-old who dates a fourteen-year-old?"

"He wasn't a creep or anything. We were just in love," Rainbow insisted.

"Hmm. You know there's a word for adults who date children."

Bambi Kirkland, District Ten mentor

"What are the odds? My old ex is my District partner," Anjou said.

"Wait, Rainbow? Isn't she fourteen years old?" I asked.

"Yeah, after a while that split us up. She was so immature," Anjou said.

"Well no shit she was immature! She was a child," I said.

"Ew, you're making it sound gross," Anjou said, scowling.

"I'm not making it gross. It is gross."

"Come on, man, give me a break!" Anjou huffed angrily and crossed his arms.

"No, I don't think I will."

Frankie Disney, District Eleven mentor

I already didn't know about emotions. I had no idea how to feel when I was looking at my own daughter on the train ride to the Capitol. It was horrible that I was already thinking about what I'd do after the Games. No matter what I was feeling, Vera would be feeling a hundred times worse. This really wasn't about me at all. I had to be here for Isabella and then I had to be here for Vera.

Mars Ingalls, District Eleven mentor

"I already know how to kill people. It's easy for me, really. I've been through a lot worse. I've done a lot of things. Really I don't really even need much help. Don't tell everyone, since I like to keep a low profile, but it's true. Also I think I might make some allies. It's good to have people around, even if you're strong. We can kill people together!"

"...okay..."

Nubu Sanders, District Twelve mentor

"Did you ever meet Shogo? Like during a Resurrection or something?" Zebulon asked.

"That's a really weird question, but yeah, I saw him a few times," I said.

Zebulon's face lit up. "Is he as cool in real life?"

"He was a sad a lot, since his son and all. He didn't talk much," I said. "What about you? Plans for the Games?" I asked, turning to Sky.

Sky squinted at me and held up a finger. She took out a pad of paper and wrote something on it, shielding it from Zebulon.

PSST DON'T TELL ANYONE BUT I'M NOT ACTUALLY DEAF. HA HA I SURE GOTTEM

Had to add a random Mars since Frankie was totally focused on Isabella
