Chapter 16: Blood on My Hands

Her head snapped around when she heard the knock at the door, and her gaze immediately sought out Marcel, who stalked into the living area from the bedroom with a deep frown. "I thought you said he didn't know I was here?" Panic flared inside her. No, it wasn't enough time.

"He doesn't." he mumbled, taking a deep breath before opening the door. He froze in shock at the person on the other side.

The blonde smiled sweetly. "Hello Marcel."

Marcel nearly stumbled back in shock. "Rebekah…"

She took in a deep breath. "Well…aren't you going to let me in?"

He glanced back at Elena and then, closed the door slightly. "Now's not the best time."

The blonde rolled her eyes, pushing the door open with little force, and strolling in. "Asking was just a formality." She called over her shoulder, and when her eyes landed on Elena her lips curled in a smirk. "And I already know about your little doppelganger revenge scheme; no need to keep secrets. You and I both know you're terrible at it. My God…you are a spitting image of Tatya." she canted her head, observing her as she circled her, twirling a lock of her hair.

Elena jerked away, backing herself against the wall. "Who are you?"

"I'm Rebekah Mikaelson…Niklaus is my brother." she smiled darkly, relishing in the way Elena's heart pounded in her chest. "Oh, don't fret…I'm not here to hurt you. In fact…you might call me your knight in shining armor."

Marcel tucked his phone in his back pocket and crossed his arms, standing ten feet behind her. "So Klaus sent you?" he sneered, narrowing his gaze on her. For a moment he'd allowed himself to believe she was there for him.

She spun to face him. "Quite the contrary actually. Nik has no idea I'm here, and I'd like to keep it that way. I'm here, because Elijah wants to broker a deal with you." Her heels clicked on the hardwood as she stood before him.

"Elijah…" he asked suspiciously. "What does he want with the doppelganger?"

"What the bloody hell do I care." she bristled with a raise of a shoulder. "I'm under strict orders that she be brought back to Elijah. What he does with her is not my business."

Behind them, Elena put the pieces together slowly turning away to hide the relieved smile. Damon and Katherine went to Elijah, Elijah knew how to get to Marcel…they were coming for her.

Marcel scoffed. "So I see nothing has changed. Still under your brothers' control. I wonder…is that why Elijah pulled the dagger out of your chest? Because he knew he could use you to get to me? Or did he actually care enough to finally let you live your own life." he questioned her cynically. He knew he struck a nerve when her lips pursed and her eyes narrowed. "You seem to forget that I know them almost as well as you do. She is the only way to get what I want from Klaus."

She shook her head. "What happened to you Marcellus? What happened to the sweet young man that I used to know?"

He closed in on her, his voice raising with each word. "That guy, watched the love of his life get stabbed through the heart and dropped to the bottom of the ocean for the next three decades!"

She spread her arms out. "I'm right here! What the hell do you need revenge on my brother for? Niklaus let me go…he doesn't control me anymore. Are you going to keep letting him control you?" Elena's eyes darted between them, feeling more than a little uncomfortable with being caught in the room during this heated argument, but there was nowhere for her to go. "What are you going to do Marcel…you're going to kill an innocent girl out of spite? Or are you going to hand her over and pray that Niklaus lets you back into the inner circle? Either way, you will never be free of him!" She screamed with a waver in her voice.

Elena inched along the wall, making her way to the balcony door slowly. Marcel pointed at her. "Where do you think you're going?" Elena stopped dead in her tracks. "Look Rebekah…if you thought that you could come here and make me change my mind then you and sorely mistaken. I'm not the same man you knew."

The blonde original sighed sadly. "Apparently so. I'm sorry Marcel…" she said sincerely. A second later she sped up to him and snapped his neck. "Let's go." She didn't bother looking back at Elena, and headed for the door with the girl hot on her heels, cautiously stepping around the limp form on the floor.

Elena rushed to keep up with her as they walked down the hall of the loft to the stairs. "Thank you, for saving me."

"Don't mention it." She pushed open the door to the stairwell.

"My sister asked you and Elijah to help get me back, didn't she?" She questioned as they turned down a flight.

"Yes, and that gorgeous blue-eyed bloke."

Elena stopped. "Damon?" She asked breathily with a ghost of a smile.

Rebekah stopped and turned back to Elena with a smile of her own. "He got that look at the sound of your name too. Who knew…true love does exist." she teased. They made it the rest of the way down stairs and out the side door of the building, and as soon as the air hit her face Elena felt free.

But that moment was short-lived, as Rebekah stood frozen in fear. A man stood casually with his hands linked behind his back, and Elena's eyes widened. She'd never forget that face. "Klaus." She whispered.

He smirked devilishly. "Hello, love."

Elena jerked away, backing herself against the wall. "Who are you?"

Marcel watched cautiously as Rebekah had her back turned, and he fished his phone out of his pocket. He had to act quickly; he typed out a text, his eyes darting up to keep track of what was going on in front of him.

I have something you want. Come and get it.

"Hello sister. I see you brought me a gift." Rebekah was paralyzed with fear, as Klaus stepped forward, circling both of them like a shark in the water. His eyes looked Elena up and down. "She's lovely. Do you have nothing to say for yourself, Rebekah?" Silence. "I guess not. Of course…it all makes sense now. Elijah's request of you, Katherine's bold attempt at blackmail…" He ran the back of his finger down her cheek. "It was all for you…Elena."

Rebekah tipped her chin up as she tried her best to be brave. "I can't let you have her, Niklaus."

Klaus pulled out the dagger from his inside pocket and showed it to her, pointing it at her chest. She sucked in a petrified breath. "Let's not forget that I have the power to put you back in the box you came from." he started, before swinging his gaze back to Elena, grabbing her arm roughly and pulling her into his side. "Now sister, why don't you run along back to our dear brother and tell him he failed. If he knows what's good for him, he'll tell Katherine to run…because his punishment will be her slow and painful death." his eyes were cold, and held no mercy as Elena's face crumbled, tears rolling down her cheeks.

Rebekah was gone in an instant, and Elena closed her eyes knowing that her chance of freedom had vanished.

"Elijah!" Rebekah yelled through the abandoned building they had been holding up in. He sped in front of her with Katherine and Damon following closely afterwards.

"Where is she?" Damon demanded.

Rebekah was near tears. "It was Nik…he ambushed us."

Katherine deflated, her knees buckling, but Elijah was quick to hold her up. "No…" she whispered, shaking her head in denial.

"I'm sorry, Damon…but she's gone." she whispered miserably. "The full moon is in two days; he has everything he needs now."

"Well I'm not about just give up!" Damon bellowed. "We still have time to stop the ritual."

Rebekah rounded on him. "And how do you propose we do that? I get it; you love her, and you are willing to do whatever it takes to save her…but you don't understand the kind of man we're dealing with! He has been my brother for a thousand years and there is no one on this Earth that terrifies me more than him. If you go after her, he will kill you!" Her eyes turned to Katherine. "You better run now while you still can. He'll come for you too."

Elijah looked concerned, wanting nothing more than to protect her, but he saw the determination on Katherine's face. "I'm not leaving my sister." she sneered, glaring daggers at the blonde, before turning in Elijah's arms. "Help me or don't help me…but I'm going back for her." She stormed off to the other room to collect herself, and Damon followed after her.

"I'm leaving, Elijah." She swore. "Niklaus will never forgive us for this, and I'm not thrilled about spending another minute in my own coffin." she sped out of the building, leaving Elijah standing alone.

Klaus dragged Elena through the entrance of the compound, her feet tripping up as he pulled her along. She dropped to her knees and stared at the puddle of blood in front of her. She raised a shaking hand to see it covered in the sticky red substance, and her eyes widened. "In all the drama I haven't had the time to clean up. That's your sister's blood. I should have ripped her heart out when I had the chance." he mocked, yanking her back up to her feet.

Elena blinked away the shock, and let Klaus throw her into a room upstairs. He locked her in, and she look around for any way of escape. The windows were boarded up, and there were no other doors. She moved around the large room; it clearly hadn't been lived in for quite some time, if the white covers over the furniture and the thick coating of dust was anything to go by, but there was a bathroom. It wasn't much; just a toilet and a sink with a worn mirror, but Elan rushed over to it, intent on washing the blood off her hands. With her unbloodied hand, she turned on the taps and caught her own reflection. This was it…after all the running and hiding, she was going to die. Her eyes dropped down as she flipped her palms up; her sister's blood was literally on her hands, and maybe Damon's would be too. She had accepted her fate, but she couldn't let them be damned along with her.

AN: I know it's not the longest chapter, but I wanted to end it here to set up for the next chapter. I think we are about 2-3 chapters away from the end. Please let me know what you think. Your reviews are always inspiring!
