The gliscor and corviknight took the lead and the garchomp stomped in the back to make us keep up a pace. Our team began to clump together as we got into pace with the escorting team.
"Soooo, does anyone wanna talk about how we are getting escorted by the scariest team in our guild?" Carter whispered to the rest of the team.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
Zeina leaned over and answered, " They aren't the most popular team. Not many Pokémon see them as 'friendly'."
I looked at each one and felt a tinge of fear from each. Just their looks brought on a huge feeling of intimidation. It was impossible to disagree.
"Seeradans' team was the public team used mostly for promotional things. They were the ones that were mostly the face of the guild, but these guys are the real backbone behind the guild. They are the real reason why other districts and enemies are afraid of the the guild." Zeina continued.
"Yeah, yeah. I heard the gliscor took down a a band of thieves with just his glare and the corviknight took down the a giant ursaring by slamming his armor into him. The garchomp behind us, she….." Carter trailed off.
I heard a low growl bellow behind me as the garchomp leaned into our conversation.
"You are slowing down. You think that I cannot hear what you speak of? We have names and we deserve enough respect for our names to be known and used. Our captain at the front or to you the gliscor, is Tarik. Our fighter, or the corviknight, is Daxton. What you said before about the ursaring is true. Then there is me, Yelena. You, small cinderace, were going to speak of my strength weren't you. Now pick up the pace. We don't want to keep them waiting" Yelena told us.
Knowing their names didn't help calm ourselves down. We continued walking back to the city none of us spoke a word to each other. With the tension clearing only a little, I was left with thinking to myself. This opened the flow of memories again. This was scary to have more memories fill my head. Most of them were about the pale creature picking up a small black brick that, a ds I think, that had Pokémon on the screen. I would spend a lot of time on there. I saw different versions of Pokémon popped on the screen as I grew older or the pale creature grew older.
I tried to distract my mind by looking at the scenery. It was beautiful. The hills and trees that were hidden by the mist before. I saw how the wind brushed through the laves of the trees. The rays of the sunlight going down streaming through the the breaks in the trees, this was a beautiful place. Those sisters wanted to cover it all to hide the beauty with confusion and darkness.
We set up camp for one final time before reaching the city from on top of one of the hills. Looking down on the faint glow of torch light was a different perspective of the city. I stood staring down at the city. I felt a large presence tower over me. Turning around, I saw Tarik staring at me with his yellow eyes. I could feel him bore into my soul to try and figure me out. I guess that lucarios had a little advantage with reading other's aura to understand them faster.
"I know what you are." Tarik started while joining me to look over the city.
"Many have called you the monster of Grandon village. They must call you a beast, or an abomination as well."
With each word I felt the cold sting of memories charging to the front of my mind.
"You are feared and I bet that half of the council are afraid of you." I turned to him in surprise.
"I know a thing or two about being called a monster. Being feared or being called a beast. My team and I are the public monsters. The ones that cause children to cry when we walk down the street."
There was a long pause before any of us said anything. I saw him heaving and staring hard at the city. I could feel his anger building inside him, but it quickly died down.
"But a monster wouldn't risk his life to make sure that the ones that were put in charge of him, stayed alive. A beat wouldn't pry them from rubble and make sure that random villagers were saved from the very caves they just survived. An abomination wouldn't cure an entire village of their dark affliction. You are not any of those things. You are a hero and I wanted to thank you for your sacrifices that you made. There aren't a lot of Pokémon down there that would do what you have done"
"Thank you."
"We do this job to make sure that those Pokémon down there feel safe and I am sorry to be the one to ask you to put these on as we walk back into the city tomorrow."
I looked at his claw and saw the shackles hang and clink together. I sighed and understood why he was handing them to me. I saw shadows move back and forth from the camp fire. I saw My name look over at me and stare at the shackles in my hand. I felt Katrina's concern and Zeina's disapproval as I latched myself into the shackles. Tarik's team watched me and they felt the same thing that Tarik was feeling right now. Mostly respect, but a little bit of regret in there. Nodding to all of them I could feel the tension die down a little.
We all didn't talk for the rest of the night. We all decided to rest. I laid down and my goody fell into autopilot mode. My body didn't respond to me to even roll around to readjust for the shackles. My mind quickly followed and I was led into the darkness of my mind.
I woke in the darkness of my dream and began walking toward a light in the distance. The light revealed a similar room with Nora's hut and the forest entry to the beast's den, but there was a third door in between the forest and the hut. It was a large white door. I slowly approached the door and heard the fire in Nora's fireplace flicker and shutter. From the beast's den I could hear it's low growl as I reached for the door.
I grabbed the brass knob and saw my paw shift into the pale creature hand. I pulled back and saw it shift back into my regular paw. I stared at the door and felt an ominous force come from the door, but my curiosity was stronger than my fear. I reached for the door and opened it. I stepped through and saw myself change into Caleb.
I continued forward and past the memories that I have already seen before. The street filled with broken glass and whirling sirens. A child huddling over a black brick. Too lost to lift his head to see what was going on around him. I walked around to find the memories end and I was left in a black surrounding.
I sighed and looked back at the memories. I could see the black shimmer a little as the memories of Caleb were slowly coming back. I didn't know what to really expect from walking in here. I stared at my body, or Caleb's body. There wasn't much to look at and I couldn't feel the same strength that I usually have. There were a few similarities. I could feel fear within this body and the feeling of not being good enough. With this weakness inside it causes confusion and uncertainty.
"The body may change, but the soul never does."
I spun around to try and find who said that.
"I am surprised to see what I became. I am not sure what to call it besides an awesome nightmare. Right?"
I quickly turned and saw Caleb standing over me. I looked down and saw that I was my old self again.
"Correction. This is your old self."
I just stared at him and waited for him to just tell me what I was thinking.
"Dude. I may be you, but it would a little weird if I was the only talking." Caleb said.
I tried to relax and looked at Caleb.
"How do you know who I am? How do I know if this is just another weird side of my already broken mind? How do I know if you aren't just another trick of the beast?"
Caleb stared at me with a confused look as he folded his arms.
"Okay I guess that's understandable. I would be sacred or angry if someone told me I wasn't me, but I don't understand the beast part. That one's a little out of my realm of knowledge. But I do know that you are me and I am you. I can prove it too. You see we have the same fears. You don't want to disappoint our friends. Because of that we try and help our friends as much as we can, we do this without any disregard to our own being." Caleb motioned towards the memories and I saw him giving up money for his because they wouldn't stop talking about how hungry they were.
"That was our lunch money for the day. We were pretty hungry for the rest of the school day, but it felt good to help him. You did something a little more extreme with risking your life to save your friend from that collapsing cave. Something else we have in common is that we seriously love our mom. We tell our mom anything and everything."
He pointed to another memory. This one was of young Caleb sitting in the dirt crying. Another kid was yelling and crying in the distance. Caleb's mother came over to young Caleb. She looked disappointed and sad as she slouched down and began talking to the young Caleb.
"Honey. Did you hit the Harrison kid?"
Young Caleb didn't answer. Instead, he tried to hide himself with his knees.
"Sweetie. I heard that the Harrison body was talking about Daddy and how he isn't with us anymore. Is that why you hit him?"
He answered with a a small nod while still keeping his face hidden within his knees.
"I know what he said hurt your feelings. I miss Daddy too, but we can't hurt anyone. That's not what Daddy would want us to do. No matter how much we want to." She lowered her head. "Now come here and promise me you won't hurt anyone just because you want to."
She spread her arms open and young Caleb jumped into her warm embrace. I watched as she comforted her child.
"You have a similar connection to her." And he pointed to the moment where Nora was cleaning my back and telling me that it was going to be okay. It was the first hug that I could remember. I felt a wariness in my heart as I relived that moment.
"So I can't remember everything, like you, but I just know that you are me and I am you. Just think about it. You aren't a normal Pokémon" He said and began walking away to leave me with the memories of Caleb as they slowly dimmed like someone had turned off the lights and I was left to slowly open my eyes to see the morning sun rise over our camp.
I sat up and looked down at the city and felt my heartbeat speed up gradually as I remembered what the villagers last saw me. It was afraid to see them again and then my mind jumped to the new threat that the council wanted to I see. It was unusual to be summoned in my normal form instead of being dragged in after the monster came out for a short visit.
