GOTHAM CITY

"I have nothing to wear!"

Zatanna rolled her eyes and dug deeper into Betty's closest. Betty stood beside her, looking at herself in the full-length mirror in the corner of the room. Betty currently wore a soft green skirt with a yellow blouse, which Betty deemed not quite fancy enough for meeting her boyfriend's family for the first time.

"You have plenty to wear," Zatanna said. Artemis popped a pretzel from the bag in her lap in her mouth, leaned against Betty's headboard, her boots kicked off onto the floor.

"If you would just pick something," Artemis intoned, and Betty sighed deeply. How was she ever going to find something to wear? This wasn't just a normal date; it was meeting Alex's aunt and uncle. One of the richest families in Gotham, and the It couple of the city. Not to mention his cousin Marianne, who most likely at eleven years old was more fashionable than Betty could ever dream to be.

M'gann sat at the foot of Betty's bed with her legs crossed, and the young Martian girl smiled widely.

"I think what you're wearing is fine Betty," M'gann said. Betty turned to face the girl and then looked down at her blouse with a pout.

"You think so?" Betty asked. She shook her head. "What do you wear when you met the Kents for the first time?"

Conner had been officially adopted by the Kent family not too long ago, as a clone of a Superman he was considered a second son by the elderly and kind couple. Betty had met them once, in passing, when she had stopped by Smallville to pick up Conner for a mission. They were nice folks, with full, warm hearts. They loved Conner with their whole selves, not bothered at all by the fact they were a clone of their son or his dubious origins as a genetic child to Lex Luthor. Betty was glad that Conner had found them. He needed a family of his own, people who would love him and take care of him when his chips were down and there was nothing and no one else.

Not that Conner would ever be alone. Betty would make sure of that, come Hell or high water.

"Skirt and a blouse," M'gann answered. "The same thing you're wearing right now." Betty carded a hand through her hand nervously. Something just didn't feel right about this outfit. Maybe a different color – or perhaps she should wear pants for once, some slacks might be nice.

"Quit doubting yourself," Raquel insisted. Raquel, Rocket's civilian name, stepped up from where she was sitting in a beanbag chair, putting a hand on her shoulder. "You look great, girl. I'm sure that Alex's family will like you no matter what you were."

Betty hoped that Raquel was right. Alex himself wasn't superficial, she had no reason to believe that his family would be. But at the same time, she wanted to make a great impression. You only got one first impression, and if she made a bad one, it would haunt her the rest of her and Alex's relationship. She needed them to like her.

"Thanks Raquel," Betty said. "I'm sure you're right, but….."

"You want to make a good impression," Zatanna finished. Zatanna pulled out a soft blue dress and held it out to Betty. "Totally get it. But you'll look awesome no matter what." Zatanna furrowed her brow and looked down at the dress. "Nrut siht sserd elprup." In a flash, the soft blue dress changed to a soft violet color, complementing the black ankle boots that Betty had put on earlier in the day. Zatanna smiled and thrust it into Betty's grasp, who took it, holding it close to her. "There, much cuter this way."

It was an A-line dress, falling to just above the knees with a rim of pink flowers on the hem. The sleeves were quarters sleeves, ending with bows on each side. A black belt was tied around the middle, a flower charm in the center. All in all, it was a cute dress, and Zatanna's alterations had given it a bit more cohesion as an outfit.

But still….this had to be perfect.

"I know that look," Artemis cut in. She swung her legs over the side and stood up, walking over to her with hands on her hips. "That's the 'I'm not good enough' look. Wipe it off your face right now."

"But—"

"No buts," Artemis interrupted. "You've taken on killer robots, mad scientists, even the literal Justice League! I'm sure that you can handle meeting your boyfriend's family."

Betty frowned. "That's different."

"How?" M'gann asked. M'gann tilted her head to the side curiously, leaning her chin on her fist. Betty crossed her arms, slightly wrinkling the dress tucked under her right arm.

"It just is," Betty defended. All of that was just physical courage, fighting and adrenaline. That kind of courage was easy to conjure. Especially since it was not about her, she was fighting for something bigger than herself. That kind of bravery and courage she had been using since she was eleven years old, almost half a decade.

This was something different. This kind of courage came from some deeper part of her, a more vulnerable part. She really, really liked Alex. Liked being around, like the way that he talked to her. The flirty way he talked to her, the kindness he showed her. And she didn't want to ruin it by not taking this seriously.

Zatanna sighed and stepped away from the closest, pulling Betty over to the mirror.

"Betty, Alex really likes you," Zatanna told her. Zatanna motioned to Betty in the mirror and smiled, giving Betty a hug around the shoulders and a tight squeeze. "He sees what we all see. A very strong, very kind girl. I'm sure no matter what you wear or what you do, his family will see that too."

Betty turned her head to look at Zatanna. "You really think so?"

"We know so," Raquel answered for Zatanna. Betty grinned and returned the hug, wrapping arms around Zatanna's middle.

"Thanks for the pep talk girls," Betty said. "What would I do without you?"

"Look way less fashionable," Zatanna answered, only semi-serious. Betty and the others laughed, and Betty let go of Zatanna. Betty took the slightly crumbled dress and disappeared in the bathroom to get ready.

"Wait – what about my make-up?!"

GOTHAM CITY

JULY 9TH 2011 19:34 EST

Betty stood on the front doorstep of Alex's home, fidgeting nervously and pulling at the hem of her ress anxiously. Aunt Melody sat in the car at the end of the sidewalk, making sure that Betty got in the home safely before leaving, and Betty could feel her exasperated stare. She had been standing on the stoop for nearing ten minutes, too apprehensive about what was to follow to raise her fist and knock.

The home was huge, with at least three stories and a giant yard. The lawn was perfectly manicured, with tasteful birdbaths and fountains set up around the outer edges. The house was a deep, rich brown stone with soft white curtains that seemed to glow in the night. It was one the prettiest and most expensive houses she had ever seen. The only house she could think to beat it was Dick's, and that's because Bruce Wayne himself came from generations of wealth.

She was self-conscious in her clearance, magic-infused dress and hand-me-down black boots. Betty most certainly did not come from wealth like this, and she just knew she was going to mess this up.

Betty took a deep breath and shook her head. No, she thought to herself. She remembered what Artemis said and straightened her back. She had fought villains and UnSubs by the hundreds. She could take on one family dinner with her boyfriend. Or at least, she hoped so.

Betty tentatively pressed the doorbell and a loud chime sung through the night air. The door handle twisted, and then standing before her was Alex in the doorway, smiling as wide as he could.

"Betty!" Alex greeted. He reached forward and wrapped her in a welcoming, warm hug. Betty felt the frigid edges of her nerves begin to thaw, but they were still cold to the touch. Her anxiety was still too consuming for her to push it aside completely.

"Hey Alex," Betty managed to squeak. Alex let go of her and ushered her inside, shutting the door behind them with a gentle but definitive thud. He put a gentle hand on her shoulder and squeezed it, smiling down at her comfortingly.

"Don't be nervous, cariño," Alex told her. Betty's nerves defrosted even more at the sound of the term of endearment from Alex. This was okay. She could do that. Alex wanted her here, that was what was important. "My aunt and uncle are sure to love you."

Betty sighed and twisted her fingers nervously. "I sure hope s…so…."

Betty cut herself off, looking around the main foyer. It was beyond her wildest dreams, certainly more than she expected. There was a grand, marble staircase tucked in the corner, spinning off to the side and up and away. The floor was stone, dyed brown and with tasteful imperfections sticking out on the floor. A carpet sat in the center of the room, soft yellow and fluffy. Mirrors and portraits were hung on the wall, and each person on the wall gave Betty a cold look that made her feel anxious all over again.

"Whoa….," she whispered. Alex smiled and took her hand.

"Yeah, it's a lot, isn't it?" Alex slowly began to lead her down a side hallway, and Betty followed without question. "Tía Viviane never does anything half-way."

Alex opened a door, revealing a small den. Well, smaller than the main foyer at least. Three of the walls were lined with bookshelves, and a fireplace was tucked quietly on the fourth. Soft plush chairs sat scattered around the room and a couch was squarely set in the center of the room. Sat on the couch was an older man with skin as tan as Alex and dark hair, a pair of glasses sitting on the edge of his nose as he read a book, the title concealed by his hand. On the other end was a little girl, seemingly only a little younger than Jason, with long dark hair in pigtails and an iPad playing some kind of song in her hands.

Betty gulped nervously and followed the much less stressed Alex inside the room.

"Tío," Alex started, and the man looked up from his book. "This is Betty." The man smiled warmly and went to stand, shutting his book and leaving it behind on the couch. The man outreached a hand to Betty to shake, and Betty took it anxiously, spirals of nerves colliding in her stomach.

"Hello, Betty," Alex's uncle welcomed, "it's wonderful to meet you. I'm Raoul Martinez."

Betty gave him the best impression she could of a smile, shaking his hand weaker than she would have liked.

"It's nice to meet you, Mr. Martinez," Betty said. Mr. Martinez grinned and motioned over to the girl on the sofa, who had looked up from her iPad to give Betty a nervous look.

"This is my daughter, Marianne," Mr. Martinez introduced. Marianne raised a hand in a gentle, slow wave, biting her lip and shifting her eyes so that she didn't look Betty quite in the eye. "She's a little shy."

Betty gave Marianne a warm smile, hoping to crack through her shell a little bit. Marianne returned it with a weak grin, but it was a grin all the same. She returned to her iPad, clicking on something but the song no longer playing.

"My wife is making dinner," Mr. Martinez said, explaining Alex's aunt's absence. "She sent home our chef for the night."

Betty's eyes widened. They had a personal chef?

"Tía Viviane said she wanted to make you her world-famous enchiladas," Alex said. Betty tilted her head to the side curiously.

"World-famous?" Betty asked. Alex laughed once and shook his head.

"So she says," Alex replied. Alex leaned in closer to Betty, eyes shining conspiratorially. "They really are good, and we always make sure to hype her up, so we get to eat them more often." Betty giggled, and Alex's smile widened.

"I better go check in and see if she needs any help," Mr. Martinez said. He sent a wink Betty's way. "Want to make sure everything is perfect for our guest."

"Oh, you really don't have to make everything perfect for me."

"Just joking Betty," Mr. Martinez waved off. He disappeared out of the room, leaving Alex and Betty with little Marianne. Alex walked over to his cousin and sat down next to her, while Betty awkwardly lingered by one of the bookcases. Alex waved her over and she took slow steps towards the two cousins.

"Marianne here is trying to learn how to bake," Alex said. Marianne looked up, startled, and frowned at him.

"Really?" Betty asked.

"Yeah," Alex answered for Marianne. "And it just so happens my amazing girlfriend is a master baker; I was thinking maybe you could help her with some pointers."

Betty smiled and delicately sat herself on the edge of the couch. She smiled at Marianne and pushed a strand of dark hair out of her face.

"Is that true?" Betty said to the little girl. "Are you trying to bake?" Marianne hesitated, eyes dropping down to her feet before she nodded slowly, unsurely. Betty straightened the skirt of her dress and crossed her ankles, nerves melting with this common ground with Marianne. "Maybe you could come over to my house, and I could show you some simple recipes. How does that sound?"

Marianne looked unsure, setting down her iPad and twiddling with her fingers.

"Or not. No pressure, Marianne," Betty tacked on. Marianne seemed grateful for the out, but then she nodded her head.

"I'd like that," the little girl whispered. This was the first thing she said all night, and Betty was struck by how gentle Marianne's voice was, it was almost melodic, and that was just from one sentence. "My friend Tim's birthday is coming up, I wanted to surprise him with cupcakes."

Betty folded her hands in her lap and smiled. "Cupcakes? Now you're speaking my language, Marianne."

Marianne smiled softly, almost too small to be noticed, and Betty felt a warmth in her stomach. Marianne was the kind of kid it seemed it was impossible not to like, and even knowing her for a few minutes Betty already wanted her to be happy and not be so shy. Maybe she could work on that when they were baking together.

The door opened, and there stood a tall, gorgeous woman with dark tan skin and brown hair to her waist. She stood straight as a queen, with a messy apron covering a tight red dress, a splash of red sauce on her face the only imperfection that Betty could find on the beautiful woman's features. Her Betty recognized from magazines in Gotham and the gossip rags that polluted the city – this was Viviane Martinez, fashion designer and model, head of Martinez Designs, the biggest fashion house outside of New York City.

Betty's nerves returned, stoving over and she gulped nervously as the beautiful woman came closer to her. Mrs. Martinez gave Betty a warm, welcoming look and reached down to pull her into a tight hug.

"Oh, Alex has told us so much about you, I'm so glad to finally meet you, Betty!" Mrs. Martinez said. Mrs. Martinez pulled away, keeping her hands on Betty's shoulders as she smiled gingerly at the girl. "I'm Alex's tía, Viviane Martinez. Please though, call me Viviane."

There was something about Viviane that convinced Betty to go ahead and call her Viviane. Maybe it was her intimidating form, Betty didn't know, but she didn't dare question it.

"It's nice to meet you, Viviane," Betty returned. "Alex has told me a lot about you too."

That was true. Alex often talked about how great his aunt and uncle were, and how lucky he was to have them to look after them when his father was on-duty. His aunt was one of the nicest people on the planet according to him, and his uncle was an intelligent but kind man who not only ran the business side of his pharmaceutical company but also lead up his own research team. His aunt and uncle were savvy and smart, but also unbelievably compassionate according to Alex, and the warm welcome Betty had received did little to dissuade Betty from believing him.

"Good things only, I hope," Viviane said. She lightly hit Alex's shoulder and leaned down, stage-whispering to him. "You failed to mention how pretty she was. Way out of your league."

"Tía!" Alex groaned, and Viviane laughed.

"I'm only kidding, Alex," Viviane insisted. She rubbed her nephew's head, mussing up his dark blonde hair just a little. Alex attempted to straighten it back out while Viviane turned to Betty. "Though you are very pretty, Betty."

Betty blushed. "Thank you."

Viviane clapped her hands together excitedly. "Now the real reason I came down here. It's time for dinner, so I thought you all might like to join us in the dining room. Or you know, you could just sit in here and talk. Whatever you prefer."

Marianne popped up, leaving behind her iPad as she rushed out of the door, mumbling something about being starved. Alex rolled his eyes and reached to take Betty's hand, and the two of them followed Viviane out of the den and into the hallway. Viviane lead them towards a room with large doors, and Betty gulped nervously as she got to the doors, wondering what kind of grand room would be waiting for her once the doors opened. Her and her aunt normally ate dinner on the couch, so this would be most certainly a change of pace.

Betty was broken from her thoughts by her phone going off in her purse, and she took it, eyes widening when she saw the text message from M'gann.

From: Miss Greenie

B wants us all at the Cave. Says we have a mission. Sorry.

Betty froze. No, no, no, no.

There had always been the distinct possibility that she would be called away on a mission tonight, but she had convinced herself the possibility was so low that it would never really happen. After all, it was one night. What were the odds Batman would need her on the one night she met her boyfriend's family? Whatever they were, the odds were against her rather than for her, as here she was, being called away on a mission.

Viviane entered the room, and Alex went to follow, but Betty grabbed his arm to stop him. She frowned at him, and Alex's face washed with concern.

"What's wrong?" Alex asked. Betty gulped and put away her phone, holding on tight to her purse strap.

"I have to go, something's come up," Betty said vaguely. Alex furrowed his brow and stepped away from the door, shutting it so the rest of his family couldn't hear them.

"What?" Alex blankly responded.

"I have an emergency," Betty made up. "I have to go." Alex grimaced and crossed his arms. "I mean, this night is important to me, I'm sure whatever it is –"

"I'm so, so sorry," Betty insisted. "But I really have to go."

Betty never wanted to have choose between Honeybee and Alex, because Honeybee would have to win every time. Without hesitation. People needed her as Honeybee, not just the citizens of Gotham but the world now that she was part of the Team. The Team would always be her first priority. It had to be, or else who knows what might happen.

Alex huffed in frustration and leaned closer to her. "Betty, you know how important this night is to me, to us. I can't believe you're just running out on me."

Betty sighed and put a hand on Alex's forearm, but he jerked away angrily. Betty flinched at the movement and pulled her arms in to hug herself.

"If I could stay, I would," Betty said. "Really."

"What's this emergency anyway?" Alex demanded. "What's so important you have to leave right now?"

Betty looked down at her feet, trying to think of a reason that would sate her boyfriend. She couldn't tell him the truth, he wasn't ready to know that she was Honeybee. She trusted him, she really did, but not enough to keep such a huge secret. She had to keep it, to keep him safe, so that if someone found out her identity, he could have plausible deniability. Her identity had to be kept secrets at all costs. It took her over a year to tell the Team, and some of them she had known for going on four years by that point.

"I can't tell you," Betty whispered. Alex hmphed and crossed his arms, shaking his head angrily.

"Can't or won't?" Alex asked. Betty whipped her head up, frowning at him.

"Can't," Betty answered, maybe a little too harshly. "It's not my secret to share, but I really have to go –"

"Then go," Alex huffed. "But don't expect me to be happy about it."

"Alex, please –"

"No," Alex interrupted. "Just go ahead and leave. Call me when you actually want to get to know my family and no get my hopes up to then run out on me."

"It's not like that at all," Betty tried. She rubbed her arms soothingly, tears collecting in her eyes. "I want to get to know them. But this…. this is beyond my control. I have to go. Please understand."

"Then tell me why you have to go, and maybe I will," Alex said. Betty hesitated. Alex couldn't know, she had to keep him safe. She cared far too much about him for her to willy-nilly share her secret with him. If he was captured or hurt because of her…. she couldn't live with that. No. He had to remain in the dark for as long as possible.

But why wasn't her word it was important good enough?

"If I could tell you, I would," Betty repeated. "But I can't, no matter how much I want to. I just really have to go, and you have to trust me that it's important."

Alex rolled his eyes and turned away from her.

"Just go already. Call me when you're ready to tell me the truth."

Betty felt anger flare in her. Why couldn't Alex understand this was important? That she wasn't running out on him? That she wanted to be here? Didn't Alex know she cared too much about him to just leave him for a silly reason?

Betty sighed and tried one more time. "I really do care about you Alex. And I want to tell you, but I can't. I promise that I'll explain everything one day. I'll see you later, okay?"

"Yeah, later. Whatever."

At the flippant response, Alex opened the doors and went through, leaving Betty in the hallway. She felt the tears collect in her again and they started to drip down her face as she retraced her steps back towards the door.

Whatever this mission was, it better be worth it.

MOUNT JUSTICE

JULY 10TH 2012 02:34 EST

Honeybee sprung back and away from the knife slashing her way and pounced high onto a thing of crates so that she was out of their reach. The assailant growled up at her, and he aimed to throw the knife in her direction. She was faster though, sending out a stinger that knocked it out of his hand. Unhooking her lasso, she swung it down so that it wrapped around his feet, immobilizing him. She pulled it forward, knocking the man off of his feet and out cold as his head hit the stone floor of the warehouse.

Betty smiled and flipped off the top of the crates, dropping back down on the ground in a crouch. They had been sent to get recon on a weapon manufacturer that was supposedly selling weapons illegally to Bialyia. It had started off fine, but of course in true Team fashion they had made brief contact with the enemy and were now engaged in a small fight between the henchmen of the buyers. Well, Honeybee and Superboy were – the rest of the Team were currently on the other side of the warehouse, trying to breach data and download as much information as they could, while dealing Shimmer and some of the other higher up guards. All in all, it was very reminiscent of their first mission as a Team.

Superboy launched a man into the metal garage door, creating a large dent in the metal as the man fell to the floor unconscious.

"You okay Bee?" Superboy asked, raising a fist to knock out another guard. Betty furrowed her brow and flipped backwards to avoid a second assailant headed her way. She raised a leg to kick, but it was narrowly avoided by the man, and she growled, dropping to avoid his hit and spinning her leg to pull his legs out from underneath him.

"Yeah, why?" Honeybee answered. Superboy took the man's hand and twisted it to the side, making the man fall to his knees in pain before Superboy cast him aside to the floor.

"You just seem off this mission," Superboy said. Honeybee pursed her lips and punched a man straight in the face, and he fell to the ground. Honeybee backed up so that she was back-to-back with Superboy, her fists raised towards the assailants coming their way. They were down to just a few now, and then they could contact the rest of the Team for a rendezvous, given they were done with their half of the mission.

"Off how?"

Superboy shrugged and avoided a punch, hitting him dead-on and the man fell to the ground with no fuss.

"Just quieter. Certainly, less sarcastic," Superboy explained. "Maneuver six!"

Honeybee pushed her arm through Superboy's, leaned against his back. Superboy raised her up and spun her around, and she sent kicks at each of the men headed their way, knocking them out easily. And then it was just them, with a small collection of groaning and unconscious henchmen. Superboy set her down and turned to face her, head tilted to the side and brow furrowed in concern.

What Superboy said had some truth to it. Honeybee had been quiet ever since she got to the Cave, through the briefing and even up till now. Her stomach had been too busy rolling over and over again, trying to come up with someway to make this up to Alex. She knew how important this night was to him, and though she didn't regret leaving, she wished she could have made a different choice. One that involved her staying behind and actually getting to know Alex's family.

She sighed and ran a hand through her hair. It was pulled into a small ponytail at the base of her skull, barely reaching the edge of her neck, but just enough for her to card through.

"I was supposed to meet…..you-know-who's family tonight," Honeybee said, careful of the immobilized but still awake henchmen. Superboy grimaced and put his hands on his hips. "I got called in for the mission and had to run out on him."

"Whoa, that's rough," Superboy replied. Honeybee bit the inside of her cheek and crossed her arms. "I take it you two got into a fight?"

"Well, he certainly wasn't pleased with me," Honeybee mumbled. She sighed heavily and looked to the sky. Betty supposed she had gotten used to everyone in her life (save Barbara) knowing and understanding about Honeybee. Knowing where her first priority would be, and that it would always lie with Honeybee. But Alex…. Alex just wasn't ready to know yet. He was her first love, and they were barely a few months into their relationship. It's not that Betty didn't want to trust him; it was that she couldn't. Not yet.

"I can imagine." Superboy stepped closer to Honeybee and put a hand on her shoulder. "I'm sure everything will work out. Just give him some time and space."

But would that be enough to fix it? Honeybee had made a promise to him that she would meet his family, something that he didn't allow just anyone to do, and then she had broken it with being unable to give a reason why. Maybe this was the end for her and Alex, maybe she had stepped too far over the line.

"I think he might just break up with me," Honeybee admitted. Superboy raised a brow and shook his head.

"Break up with you?" Superboy said. "Not a chance. You're too cool to be broken up with."

Honeybee rolled her eyes and punched his shoulder tenderly. "Thanks, Supe."

"I'm serious Bee," Superboy insisted. "Just give him some time to cool off, and I'm sure this whole thing will blow over."

Honeybee sure hoped so. She didn't want to say goodbye to Alex, not like this. Honeybee really, really cared about him and didn't want him to leave her life. In such a short time, he had become very important to her. So important that life without him didn't seem quiet as bright or appealing. She wanted them to work past this, wanted to make it up to him somehow. She just wasn't sure how.

"I hope you're right," Honeybee whispered.

"Superboy, Honeybee, rendezvous at the south side of the building for pick-up," Miss Martian's voice cut through their heads. And just like that, it was back to the mission.

Betty sighed and shook Alex out of her head for the last time. She would fix this, in due time. She just needed to figure out how.

Chapter Bible Verse:

"According to God's grace that was given to me, I have laid a foundation as a skilled master builder, and another builds on it. But each one is to be careful how he builds on it. For no one can lay any other foundation other than what has been laid down. That foundation is Jesus Christ." – 1 Corinthians 3:10-11

I didn't really mention it last chapter, but Alex is meant to be bi-racial. He's half Hispanic by his father's side, and his aunt is his father's sister. This isn't the end of Alex, we'll most certainly being see more of him. (And his family.) Any thoughts on them?

Review Replies:

MsRosePetal: I think S4 should come out in October, but don't quote me on that. Alex will be sticking around, and I have some surprises in store for this character. He's most certainly not being thrown away after this arc is done. And Dick totally did a background check, Betty just doesn't know it. And Conner would do anything to protect Betty, so if Alex ever does hurt her, Conner would be first in line to 'talk with' Alex. But he also wants her to be happy, so he'll also talk with her to see if they can work it out, like he did here. Thanks for leaving a review and have a blessed day!

acd2016: I flip-flopped on the pairing for so long, as a part of me will always hold onto Betty and Dick. Betty and Conner are just stronger I think pairing wise, which is why I switched it. But their relationship moving forward will still be interesting, especially going into Season 2 and 3, as I have plans to keep them having a dynamic friendship. But I'm glad you like both pairings, as I worked really hard to build both of those relationships. And Alex's angry now but ultimately a good person, and we'll be seeing more of him. Thanks for leaving a review and have a blessed day!
