Chapter 1: A New Start
Ron was always someone who liked to sleep in, it was one of the main reasons he was often late for school. Well… that and the many movie marathons he frequently enjoyed with his best friend Kim.
But, it wasn't his fault! He needed to de-stress, after all those near-death experiences he had on missions nearly every week!
So, sleeping was basically a great time to relax for the young blonde- but even HE couldn't stay asleep, not when his head was pounding as hard as it was at the moment!
"Ohh… shi- wha…what?" The young blonde grimaced, gripping his skull tightly. It seemed to help lessen the migrane after a few seconds, but only a little.
Ron finally opened his eyes, slowly taking in the soft light and chilly wind washing over his face.
"Oh… Rufus… could you close the blinds?" Ron requested, searching for his blanket (but failing to find it). The blonde's hand kept reaching out, trying to find his soft covers- he felt something along the way… short blades of grass?
Had he fallen asleep while eating in bed again? It wouldn't be the first time…
After a few seconds more the young Stoppable was able to find his soft blanket, pulling it towards himself. It felt odd, for some reason… fluffier? Round? The inconsistencies didn't matter to his tired mind, he simply dragged it closer.
There was a sudden sound that made the younger teen open his eyes in shook, "Woo…"
The first thing Ron deduced was that he wasn't ANYWHERE near his room, let alone his bed. Ron was clearly lying in a field, or someplace similar. Even stranger, currently in his hands was a sheep!
Well, it certainly looked LIKE a sheep… It had wool all over its body; short, dark, stubby legs and horns… as well as one dreadlock hanging down from each side of its head?
'Wait, what?' Ron yelped silently, the odd-looking sheep staring at him and making an odd noise. It didn't sound like any sheep HE'D ever heard of, that was for sure.
The noise became louder as more and more 'sheep' seemed to join the cacophony, moving closer to the blonde teen. A few seconds later, he was surrounded be a few dozen of them… all looking identical to the first one.
Was it a species he'd never seen before? Perhaps some strange hybrid?
They were leveling some curious looks at him… At least, he hoped that's what it was…
The one still in Ron's grip made a sound, the rest replying before rushing in. The sidekick considered it "rushing in", but it was more like simply walking over and trying to snuggle closer to him. The animals climbed on top of him, burying Ron alive.
It was pleasant… and hard to breath, now that he had no more room left for air.
"I-I can't… need to get out, before…" His vision was getting blurry, as the seconds ticked by. The lack of air, and the fact that he'd just woken up, was seriously hindering his ability to think of a way out of this mess.
His hand reached out, trying to grab something to pull himself to safety- before being stuffed back in… Was this the end for him, death by pleasant fluffiness?
Suddenly Ron could feel a strong hand grab his own, very slowly pulling him out of the small mountain of sheep.
The cool air filled his lungs once more, the sun nearly blinding his eyes. Hell, at this point Ron preferred it over the alternative.
"Hey… you okay?" asked a male voice, a hand patting his shoulder a few times.
"Y-Yeah… I am now… just g-give me a second to catch my breath…" Ron replied. He tried getting to his feet, wobbling a bit (at least he managed to keep his footing).
The blonde Stoppable was now able to take in all of his surroundings, confirming that he wasn't anywhere NEAR his room. Ron was currently in a large field, a few dozen or so feet away from him was a long fence that seemed to stretch as far as the eye could see.
In front of him stood three people, two guys and a girl.
The girl looked a tad on the tired side, her eyes only half open. The guy next to her had a pleasant face, adorned by a pair of glasses.
The final guy was… massive, to say the least! He looked almost double the size of the other two, making Ron feel like a dwarf standing next to an ogre. His muscles made the sidekick wonder if he was staring at one of Dementor's crazy, enhanced goons. But, despite his rescuer's huge stature, his face was pleasant and kind… almost childlike.
The man had reddish colored hair and shining, green eyes. On top of his head was a large, white sunhat that seemed almost as big as he was. Finally, there was a green scarf draped around his neck. All three were wearing a matching set of green pants and a white shirt, with what looked like a green leaf symbol on it. 'A uniform?' Ron wondered.
The huge man glanced at the two people next to him. "Jeffrey, could you and Amanda take the Wooloo and get them sorted out?" he asked, his voice as kind as his face.
The two behind him nodded, before moving away. The pair split up, starting to push the strange sheep away.
"Now that we can talk properly…", the huge man turned to face him once more. "Sorry about that, they didn't mean any harm. Sometimes the Wooloo can get a bit excited, if they see someone new."
"Woo-loo?" Ron parroted, glancing back at the animals that had piled on top of him. "Are those strange looking sheep?" he asked.
"Strange sheep?", the huge man looked confused at his words. "I guess they could seem odd, if you've never seen one before… In any case, I'm Milo!", he presented his hand to the blonde boy.
"Oh, right! I'm R-Ron, thanks for lending me a hand… literally!" the blonde sidekick answered meekly. He expected the handshake to crush his fingers- or, at the very least, make him feel some serious pressure. In reality it was surprisingly gentle, not hurting him at all.
"Nice to meet you, Ron! So, now that we've got the pleasantries out of the way… could you tell me what you're doing here?" Milo asked. He didn't sound angry, only curious. The gym leader wished to understand the true reason for his sudden visitor, most people who turned up didn't exactly visit the stables.
"I… I don't know…" Ron looked around once more, noting Milo's confusion as well. "The last thing I remember is… sleeping in my bed, then I woke up surrounded by those Woo-loo…"
"Mmm… is that so?" Milo didn't sound convinced, he shrugged. "Well… why don't you follow me out of the ranch, for starters?" the huge man suggested. He glanced back at the blonde teen, who nodded at him in a hurry.
Ron suddenly noticed something moving behind the man, his eyes nearly bulged out. Ron took a step back in fear. "W-what the hell is that?!" Ron yelled in fright.
It was something that looked like a little plant person holding a large cotton ball on its back, wearing a yellow scarf around its neck. Its beady, yellow eyes stared at Ron and its head tilted to the side.
Milo looked behind himself, glancing at 'the thing', before he pointed his gaze back towards Ron. "It's my Eldegoss… haven't you ever see one before?" His question was answered when the blonde teen shook his head furiously, staring at the alien creature- like it would pounce on him, the second he looked away.
It was an odd response, to be sure…
Eldegoss weren't exactly the MOST common thing out there, but the blonde's response seemed bizarre to him… Had he been sheltered from the outside world, or something?
"Don't tell me you've never seen this type of Pokémon before…" Milo teased.
Ron stared at the man, one eyebrow raised. "What the hell is a Pokémon?"
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
An hour or so later Ron was sitting in a room, waiting for Milo to return. The gym leader had insisted that Ron wait in his office, while Milo made a call.
The young Stoppable had seen a lot, as he'd followed the man here. There weren't just those sheep- and that Elder something- there were more… WAY too many!
As soon as the pair had entered the building, Ron could see a multitude of different creature walking around- or being carried around by more people wearing the same kind of uniform Milo had. If anything, Ron seemed to be the odd man out… only HE seemed nervous about the strange animals.
Staring out the window, Ron was instantly taken back by the stunning view. A lush green field, with a few mountains dotting the background. It really looked like somewhere he'd never gotten to visit… but (to be fair) most of the places he and Kim went to were either completely deserted, or simply full of people (seeing as those were the best choices for villains in hiding).
The door to the office suddenly creaked open a bit, something very small slipping inside. Ron would have jump out of his seat, but noticed it was only a small dog.
"Oh! Hey there, little guy!" Ron greeted, reaching down to pet the dog. It was a corgi, Ron concluded… Most of his fur was brownish, the area around his neck yellow and puffy. Like a small lion cub. It had bright green eyes, as well as a yellow nose. The only distinct thing Ron picked out was the shape, and color, of its tail. It was shaped like a small, yellow lightning bolt.
The dog barked in joy, moving closer to the blonde. It rested its front paws on the boy's leg, leaning against it.
"Ahh… aren't you just the cutest!" Ron exclaimed, petting its head for a few seconds and scratching behind its ears. "Too bad Rufus isn't here… you two would have been good friends." Ron suddenly felt the hairs on the back of his neck starting to stand up, as if he was shuffling his feet against a carpet.
The door to the room opened once more, a woman walking inside and glancing around for a moment- she spotted Ron. "Yamper, there you are! What did I tell you about running off like that?" The women noticed Ron near her dog. "Oh, sorry about him… he's usually keeps his distance from people he doesn't know" she apologized with a smile.
The girl had peach-colored hair, braided into a ponytail dangling from the side of her head. She had a few silver heart accessories weaved into it, as well as a pair of glasses perched on top of her head. She had aqua-colored eyes, staring right at the blonde boy. She wore a tight pair of jeans, as well as a green sweater- that was almost completely covered by a very large, brownish coat that didn't seem to fit her very well.
"It's no problem! I love dogs, and this little guy is very friendly!" Ron assured her, smiling. He was glad he'd happened to run into one of THOSE kinds of owners, the type that didn't have an issue with other people touching their pet.
"Dogs?" she repeated, looking confused. She shook her head, moving on from the strange declaration. "In any case, I'm Sonia!"
"R-Ron…" the blonde stuttered, his gaze having drifted from the cute dog to his VERY mature owner. Quite frankly, Sonia was an extremely attractive woman. Unfortunately, Ron had never had any kind of luck with the fairer sex before.
"Are you new at the gym?" the beauty asked, moving closer to the boy.
"Gym?" the blonde teen parroted. It certainly made sense, considering how buff Milo was. But, if that was the case, what was the deal with all the sheep? "Um… no, I'm not…"
"Mmm… So, do you happened to know where Milo is? He called me over and now I can't find him…" the girl asked, glancing around.
"N-No… I was kinda left here, after I… woke up-" Before the blonde teen could finish the door opened once more, the buff man they'd been discussing entering inside.
"Sonia, you made it!" he observed, smiling.
"Yeah, I was doing some research in the area… So, what is it you wanted?" the girl questioned, her friendly demeanor turning a little more serious.
"I assume you've met Ron here…" Milo asked, pointing at said boy. Sonia nodded in confirmation.
"Yeah, we were talking just now…" Sonia replied, was it something involving the blonde she'd just met?
"Great, I'll get to the point… Ron here has never SEEN, or HEARD about, Pokémon in his life" Milo declared.
Ron simply tilted his head to the side. 'There's that word again…', was it supposed to mean anything? Apparently it did, the peach-haired girl turning to stare at him over.
"Is that why you called me over?" she asked, looking skeptical.
Milo simply pulled out a small red and white ball, a black line running right through the middle of it. "Hey Ron, catch!" he bellowed, suddenly throwing it at the blonde boy. Ron easily caught it.
"Okay?" the blonde teen agreed, looking it over in confusion. Was this supposed to mean anything to him? It WAS just a ball, after all…
….
"Could you press the button in the middle?" the man requested, wearing a tiny smirk.
"S-Sure?" As soon as Ron pressed said button the ball expanded in his hand, opening with a loud pop. A bright beam of light hit the floor, startling the blonde and making him jump back.
As the light died down, Ron stared in amazement at the familiar creature now standing where the beam of light had hit.
"H-How is that thing here!?" Ron yelped, backing away, truly freaking out at the sight of the Eldegoss he'd seen earlier.
The creature started to move closer to him. It's expression almost looked puzzled, if the blonde was reading it properly.
"What do you mean HOW? You called it out of its pokeball…" Sonia pointed out, staring at Ron.
"Poke-ball? You mean to tell me that thing was hiding in there?! Inside such a small ball?!" The sheer amazement the young Stoppable was displaying was nothing, compared to the worry he felt when the Eldegoss moved closer and started making angry noises at him.
"I think you pissed him off…" the peach-haired girl explained, watching with a tiny smile on her face.
"I-I did? Is it annoyed that I made it come out of the ball?" Ron asked, taking some more steps back.
"I think it's more because you called it a THING…" Sonia replied. Almost instantly the Eldegoss responded to her words, as if it was fuming.
"I-I'm sorry… I didn't mean to call you a- that…" Ron apologized, amazed when the Eldegoss simply nodded in response. It wandered back over to Milo, who asked Ron for his ball back.
The blonde teen carefully tossed the ball to the huge man, Milo pointing it at the Eldegoss and recalling it inside.
Ron visibly relaxed as soon as the Pokémon was back inside its ball. "Couldn't you have at least warned me about it- him?" Ron breathed out, staring at the larger man.
"Ah, sorry… my bad. But, in my defense, that's pretty much a normal thing around here…" Milo replied.
"And WHERE is HERE?" Ron asked, probably the most important question he needed answered. After that, it would be just a matter of finding a phone and calling Wade, or Kim, to get him back home.
"Well… you're in the Galar region, obviously" Sonia answered, taking a seat and staring at the blonde teen.
"Okay… the Galar region… and where is that?" Ron asked.
"In the Galar region…" Sonia added dryly. "Where did you come from?"
"I'm from Middleton, it's in Colorado… inside the United States…" Ron waited for their response, noticing the odd looks they were giving him. "The USA? One of the biggest countries on the world map?" Their silence was so very telling, something was wrong… very wrong!
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
In the end, nobody had ever heard of Middletown, Colorado, or even the US. They went and showed him a world map, confirming what he'd been dreading.
Ron was nowhere near HIS world.
If the strange animals walking around hadn't been enough of a hint…
Milo had asked one of his workers to give Ron a tour of the 'gym' and answer some of his questions, while he discussed something with Sonia.
The guy who showed him around had explained the purpose of the gym, as well as what their own specialized in. Now Ron understood it wasn't a gym for people… it was for Pokémon. It was a place where people could come and challenge the gym, to get stronger and receive a badge as proof of their skill.
This specific gym specialized in what they called grass-type Pokémon, it only made him wonder what other types there were.
Finally, he was given a room he could stay in… until Milo figured out what they were going to do about him.
….
"You want me to… what?" Ron asked the leader of the gym.
"I want you to help us take care of our Wooloos!" the larger man enthused, smiling at the blonde teen.
"Wooloos- those sheep Pokémon, right?" He received a nod for confirmation. "Um… why?" the blonde asked.
"Well… until we find out where it is you came from, or at least how to get you back there, you need to find a place to stay… right? So, I'm offering you a place to stay- plus food and some money- until you do" Milo finished with a smile, presenting his offer.
"You want me to stay and help- don't you have, like, a few people here already?" the blonde teen pointed out- before realizing how that sounded. "N-not that I don't appreciate it! But, wouldn't you rather have someone who knows what their doing? …and actually has some experience?"
"I would… but, we're a bit short handed at the moment. Most of the people you saw walking around earlier are just helping out when they can. Truthfully, we only have- like- four people who can battle the challengers stopping by… You would really be doing me a favor here, Ron."
The blonde sidekick could detect the small lie, hidden inside Milo's kind words. They didn't REALLY need him, Milo already had plenty of help. But, he still wanted to give Ron a place to stay… until he could find his way home. And as much as the blonde didn't like it… beggars can't be choosers.
….
Ron was busy moving a few huge blocks of hay to a different part of the fence. His newest task was to deliver the material to where the Wooloos had been staying, while they cleaned the place where they usually slept. Ron wanted to stay away from the small herd of sheep, as much as he could. But, as it turned out, only Milo and himself could actually lift the huge rectangles and carry them (without any help). It was safe to say that the rest of the staff was amazed by how much strength Ron had, considering his lithe frame.
The Wooloos had been pretty happy to see him- or, at least, the food Ron had brought with him… He only hoped HE wasn't going to end up a part of their diet. Although Milo HAD explained to Ron that Pokémon were not prone to attacking humans… unless they lived in the wild, as those could be very territorial and would chase away anyone who approached them.
'Not going there anytime soon…' the blonde vowed, setting down the mix of grass and hay he'd brought over a few feet away from an older woman who'd been helping shepherd the Wooloos.
"-and that's number five. Good job Ron, you're a great help!" gushed the old woman he knew as Miss Shepherd (no pun intended).
"Ahh, it's no big! Most of the work is inside the barn itself! Anyone could have done this…" the blonde responded bashfully.
"If by ANYONE you mean only YOURSELF and MILO… then sure", she giggled at his face. "You've already done plenty honey, why don't you help me feed the Wooloos? Some of them are REALLY hungry." The older lady smiled, handing Ron a small bag with a few colorful berries inside it. "These will get even the MOST stubborn ones to follow you…" she assured him, moving towards a small pack of Wooloos to feed them.
Now left to his own devices, Ron started feeding the sheep Pokemon too. In truth, he still wasn't used to dealing with (or even seeing) Pokémon at all. It had only been a few weeks since he'd arrived in this strange world.
Although he'd only dealt with the Wooloos on the farm, and Milo's Eldegoss a few times, he knew that there were literally hundreds more species out there… The thought didn't exactly fill him with much confidence.
Suddenly, there came a soft rustle inside some bushes a few feet away from him. 'Did some random Wooloo get stuck in the brush again?' Ron had come to learn that these Wooloos could get lost pretty easily, wandering off to just about anywhere.
The blonde moved forward and knelt down, ready to grab the sheep Pokémon. His hands reached forward, snatching the soft fur of the hiding Pokémon. He slowly started pulling, until he held it in both hands, "gotcha!"
He'd expected a white, fluffy Pokémon… but found something entirely different. It was fluffy, yes, but definitely not white.
In his hands was something red and golden, his eyes locked on a set of amber orbs staring right at him.
"You're not a Wooloo…" Ron mumbled at the small Pokémon. The creature looked tiny in his hands, even shaking a bit. 'Is it a baby, or something?' the boy wondered. Ron instantly recalled his first few dealing with Milo's Eldegoss… and his owner's words.
'They can understand me… even if I can't understand them in turn' the blonde boy mused. He very slowly set the small Pokémon down, letting it go. "Sorry about that, little guy… I thought you were one of the Wooloos I'm taking care of…"
The small fox-like creature stared up at him, its head tilted to the side in wonder- or was it something else?
'Well… Pokémon are like animals, right?' Ron reasoned, reaching for the small bag that had been given to him. He pulled out a few berries, handing them to the small fox. "Here you go… sorry about scaring you, okay?"
The small fox Pokémon stared at the berries for a few moments, as if judging if they were safe, before it simply started devouring them without restraint.
'Well, at least it forgave me… or was it just hungry' Ron turned around, walking a few steps- before a few sudden yelps made him jump and freeze on the spot. Turning around, Ron saw the same small Pokémon staring at him… the berries it had been given nowhere in sight.
"You're still hungry?" the young Stoppable questioned, the Pokémon yelping once for confirmation. Ron would have complained that the Pokémon was being greedy… but that would make him a hypocrite (considering the amount HE usually ate). Ron knelt down once more, pulling the bag open. He placed a small mountain of berries in front of the little Pokémon. "Here, this should be enough… right? Now you finish this and go back to your trainer, or family, okay?" Ron declared, petting the small Pokémon's head.
The fox-like Pokémon yelped a few time, an obviously-happy expression on its face, before it started eating once more.
'Cute little thing… Maybe they aren't so scary, after all…' the blonde teen mused, returning to his task.
….
Ron had already been with the gym for almost two months now, the blonde finally able to say that he'd become far more accustomed to the Pokémon in the area. He'd gotten so familiar with the gym that he'd decided to volunteer to do the cooking.
'Are you sure you can handle it? We have a lot of people helping out, if you don't think you're up for it-' one of the trainers there, Chloe, cautioned him. She was perfectly willing to offer Ron an out, or some assistance, if he didn't think he could manage it.
"Why not? I think this could really be a great idea!" Milo shouted, happy to let the blonde newcomer get as comfortable as he wanted. In truth, Ron had already been a big help to them. Someone who was so eager to assist, and just had a very easygoing personality.
In the end, they had allowed the blonde teen to do the cooking for the day. If he was this certain of himself, then it was bound to be decent… right?
"T-That was… amazing" whispered one of the volunteers.
"I… I didn't know that was even POSSIBLE…" added another.
"You could cook like this the entire time?" Milo asked in amazement, the blonde nodding in confirmation. "Are you some kind of chef, on your- where you come from?" the huge man quickly amended, as they had both decided to keep where Ron came from a secret.
"No, I just like cooking as a hobby… More like a side thing, really" Ron answered easily.
'This level of perfection is a HOBBY?!' the rest of the people all thought in amazement, already asking for seconds.
"Say, Ron, what would you say if I asked you to cook for the Pokémon as well?" Milo questioned in between bites.
"Wha- really? I wanted to offer to do that as well, but don't they need special food or something? Won't it make them sick?" the young sidekick prodded.
"No, not really… Most Pokémon can eat just about anything people can, some can even grow stronger from it- but that depends on the Pokémon, and what it's like…" Milo explained, finding himself in a really good mood after eating something so expertly made.
"Oh! In that case… I can feed them right now, while you finish up!" Ron offered, noticing their confused expressions. "I kinda lost track of how much I was preparing while I was whipping up lunch, I ended up making a whole bunch of extra food… So, if it's okay with you…" Ron trailed off.
"Just how much?" one of the staff asked.
"A few extra pots… it might have been a bit excessive… sorry-" Ron apologized, Milo cut him off.
"R-Really?! Then, maybe we could use this for the opening ceremony tomorrow!" the gym leader declared, Ron looked confused. "Don't worry about it! Just go and let the Pokémon have some, I'm POSITIVE it will put them in a good mood!"
Ron wasn't sure what Milo had been talking about, but simply left. The blonde let the rest of the staff members finish eating, going to feed the Pokémon they had. Most of them were the usual Wooloos he dealt with, along with the Pokémon that belonged to the rest of the trainers. He'd learned they were several Budew and a few Oddish.
All grass type, as he understood it, and all incredibly cute and friendly! They all pretty much looked like walking, smiling plants… which would have been a horror scenario waiting to happen, but the things were simply too cute to be afraid of.
They all looked really happy to see Ron, even more so when they tasted what he'd brought them. The blonde was honestly glad they all liked it… and that the food wasn't bad for them.
Something caught his attention, Ron glanced to the side, had he perhaps missed one of the Pokémon? He instantly recognized the same small fox-like Pokémon he'd seen before.
"You again? Let me guess… you want some too?" Ron didn't even need to ask, the small thing running up to his feet and started scratching him playfully.
The first time Ron had met him, he just seemed lost and hungry. But now he knew better, after learning a bit more about Pokémon. This one was what they called a WILD Pokémon, most trainers wouldn't simply let their Pokémon walk around like this… Although there WAS Sonia's cute, corgi-like Pokémon Yamper that was always wandering around.
Ron simply concluded that each trainer was a little different and let it go, he fetched another large plate and filled it up with a generous portion. Ron already knew this little guy had an appetite, one almost as voracious as his own.
As Ron set the plate down the small fox yelped in joy, before it started eating as well.
'Pokemon really aren't that bad, after all…' he mused to himself.
X-=-=-=-=-=-=-X
The blonde teen was staring, his eyes nearly popping out of their sockets, at the Pokémon that was now bigger than a house!
….
A few hours earlier…
The next day arrived, Ron coming to understand the ceremony Milo had been talking about. Apparently, something called the Pokémon League was starting soon. Trainers from all over were rushing to get gym badges, so they could compete in the league itself.
Apparently, Milo's grand scheme was to sell some of Ron's food at the huge stadium where the gym matches were being held.
Ron would have scoffed at the idea… if he wasn't busy working in the kitchen, making even more food for the people watching. Everything he made was selling like hotcakes. The instant Ron was done with the last batch, he was pulled into the stadium. A few of the staff had insisted he take a break, enjoy the matches.
What they hadn't told him was that some of the Pokémon could grow to the size of houses and battle one another!
Apparently, it was some kind of phenomenon that only happened in the Galar region. It scared him more then he cared to admit, even if that light seemed all too familiar to the blonde boy… where had he seen it before?

And that's done!
Don't forget to tell me what you think!
