Chapter 5: Elevator Troubles
Blue eyes stared in anger and longing at the pair moving away from the stadium- or, more specifically, at the blonde of the two.
Nessa had been more than a little overjoyed at the sight of her savior's victory over the fire Gym leader. While it wasn't uncommon for some trainers to win against a gym leader on the league's first day (after all, it wasn't really an official fight), such was usually reserved for the far more experienced trainers among them. For those that had worked for quite a long time before they'd even ATTEMPTED to enter the league (usually having a full party- or an evolved Pokémon, at the very least).
Ron fulfilled none of those qualifications, he was a completely new trainer. It had been PAINFULLY obvious from what Nessa had seen during his mock fight against her, both his bearing and commands far too nervous to mark him as an experienced trainer.
Ron's Pokémon (Tear) had even started crying after she'd been hit by a weak water gun attack, running straight into her trainer's arms.
So, seeing his little grass Pokémon stand up to an evolved fire Pokémon had been completely unexpected to her- even more so than for anyone else in the stadium. Who'd ever claimed that grass was weak against fire?
Nessa was happy for Ron, now even more fiercely determined to congratulate him! She quickly whipped up a plan to meet the blonde at the entrance, then casually invite him to a nice dinner at the hotel she was staying. Maybe they could do a little sightseeing on the way? Exchanging numbers? … perhaps even a date, later down the line?
Nessa continued planning after she'd changed back into her more casual attire, waiting patiently off to the side (so as to not draw attention to herself). It would definitely spell ruin for her surprise, if she ended up surrounded by her many fans- or, new trainers.
'There you are…' Nessa's smile grew upon spotting Ron leaving the changing room, looking just as he had when he'd rescued her only a few short hours ago. A surge of happiness swelled in Nessa's chest, she stepped out into the open with a smile.
"Milo!" the blonde teen called out. Ron rushed forward to meet the grass gym leader, who seemed to be waiting for him.
'What?' Nessa squawked silently, watching as the two talked. 'Does he know Milo?' The conclusion was fairly obvious, witnessing them chatting so casually. It also made her realize that- if Ron's words were true, when she'd met him the first time- it was most likely Milo who'd given him the endorsement required to enter the league.
Thinking about that annoyed Nessa. For some reason, she felt the sudden urge to simply walk up to the pair and give Milo a piece of her mind before taking Ron away. But, she just couldn't do that… Ron didn't owe Nessa anything- but she did owe something to him… and he looked so happy at the moment.
'I'll just wait until Milo walks away, then…' She giggled slightly at the idea of running into Ron 'coincidently', out in the street. All she needed to do was wait for the right moment…
…
"You look worried Ron… something bothering you?" Milo asked the blonde next to him.
"Well… it's nothing big…" the boy answered, glancing to the side.
"Is it about what the chairman said?" the older man guessed, the blonde teen nodding slightly in response. "I wouldn't worry about it too much… just check out all of the gyms and try to have fun!" Milo advised, smiling broadly.
"I'll try… but I think I kinda messed up already…" Ron confessed, the older man leveling a puzzled look at him.
"How so?"
"Well, I've already drawn attention to myself by winning… Everyone expected me to lose, right?" Ron prompted.
"Ah… I wouldn't worry about that too much…" Milo insisted. "Our current champion- Leon- has never been defeated in his entire CAREER, not even when he was just starting out… It's really not that rare, people will just think you're a good candidate for the next champion!" the large man explained with a smirk.
"Which I'm not… Milo, I'm not really a trainer…" the monkey master pointed out.
"You already kinda are…" the grass-type gym leader returned.
"I mean that I'm just starting out… I've never even had a Pokémon until a few days ago…"
"So? What does it matter?" Milo challenged, Ron staring at him in disbelief. "It doesn't matter when you started, or with what Pokémon… What's important is to be yourself and to care for them" the older man explained, his smile gentle as he spoke. "Cinder chose you, remember? That means that SHE could tell that you were a good trainer!"
"Or, that I FED her…" the blonde downplayed, earning himself a pat on the back.
"Trust me Ron… it was so much more than that…" Milo declared. The pair finally arrived at the hotel Ron (and the rest of the new trainers) was supposed to be staying at for the night. "Sorry, but I've got to get going! I need to get back to the gym, prepare for you- and the rest of the new trainers- to arrive. I'll see you later, okay?" he patted Ron on the shoulder and shot him a thumbs up.
"Oh! Sure thing, Milo!" he responded quickly, Ron bidding his friend goodbye. He took a look at the building he was supposed to be staying, before taking a deep breath and entering inside.
…
The place was packed with all the different trainers he'd seen at the stadium, as well as a few others that were hanging around and talking to them. Ron also noticed a golden statue of what looked like a knight holding a sword in one hand and a shield in the other. 'Nice decoration…' he mused, glancing at all the people around him.
'Probably their friends, family, or fans' Ron guessed. He walked further inside, careful not to run into anyone. All he needed to do was get to his room and relax for the night, then start tomorrow fresh!
Ron should probably tell Cinder and Tear about what was going on too. After all, THEY were the ones who would be doing the fighting…
The blonde teen noticed a few trainers staring at what looked like the front desk, Ron moved closer. 'Is there a long line, or something?' he puzzled- until he finally saw… them.
There was a small group of people- eight, actually- all dressed the same. A mix of black and grey-colored clothes. The sides of their heads were shaved… with bright-pink, spiked hair in the middle- for both the guys AND the girls. They were sporting spiked collars, even face paint… Odd didn't even BEGIN to describe it.
They reminded Ron of all those sports fans back home that were completely dedicated to their favorite team, showing up at games and proudly showing off their commitment. He'd never done anything like that himself… but, to be fair, he'd never really been into sports in general (except for pro-wrestling, obviously).
"What are THEY doing here?" someone next to him asked his friend quietly.
"No idea… I just want to check in and get to my room, but they don't want to move…" the annoyed girl answered.
"Can't someone make them take this off to the side?"
Ron could hear the weak, almost silent murmurs coming from all around him.
'So, they're holding up the line and preventing everyone from checking in?' The blonde teen couldn't help but glance around, it didn't look like anyone was ready to step up and do anything. The crowd was just waiting for someone else to deal with this little issue.
In all honesty, he'd been much the same as the sidekick of his team. Kim had always been the one to move forward, dealing with just about anything she actually could (and a few things she couldn't!). Breaking up feuds, keeping the peace- and that was just on the cheer squad!
'Trust me Ron…' he suddenly recalled Milo's words. Before he knew what was happening, the ex-sidekick broke through the wall of people and stepped forward.
"What do you mean we can't?" challenged one of the 'gang', speaking to the clerk at the front desk. "We came all the way here to cheer on the gym challengers! Team Yell is here to help! You're in for a battle, if you wanna stop us!" the leader of the group declared.
'So, they wanted to cheer us on?' Well, Ron understood what they were doing here. But, that still didn't change the fact that they were kind of in everyone's way at the moment.
Oh, and now they were staring at HIM…
'Wait…' Ron had finally realized that they'd noticed him break through and were quickly approaching him.
"Can I help you, mate?" one of the male members asked, shooting Ron a curious look.
Wow, now he was the center of attention… AGAIN… just great!
"Oh! Yeah! I-I…" Ron stammered, racking his brain for something to say. It was especially hard when every pair of eyes was locked on him. His gaze landed on something that one of the members was holding, it looked like a poster. "I wanted to ask about that poster" Ron explained, pointing at the object in question.
"Yeah? What about it?" the guy replied, a bit of interest in his tone. The rest of his team was looking a whole lot more serious.
"It looks… really awesome! Can you tell me where I can get one?" the blonde teen asked. Ron honestly did think it looked cool, even if he couldn't really focus on the face of whoever was on it at the moment.
"Hell yeah, we can!" the guy shouted, closing the remaining distance between them. He pulled a copy of the very same poster out of his jacket, proudly displaying it to the blonde. "Isn't she AWESOME?! Team Yell came all this way to follow and cheer our diva on, as she makes her way through the league!" His excited tone gained ever more enthusiasm, the rest of his team also approaching the blonde and insisting 'she' was the best.
As soon as they'd moved, the rest of the trainers started checking into the hotel- the line growing smaller and smaller.
Ron had successfully managed to pull the 'gang' off to the side! "So… you said all of you came to cheer her on? She must be a GREAT trainer!" the blonde declared. Ron's subtle words of praise seemed to please the small group, they all smiled from ear to ear.
"Damn right she is! We were just about to cheer her up when that clerk stopped us!" A few of them glanced over at the receptionist, a bit of anger returning to their faces.
'Oh oh…' the blonde mused, quickly stepping in. "That's totally awesome of you! I bet she'll really appreciate it when you cheer her on in the gyms, or when she battles!"
They all glanced at each other, confused by Ron's words.
"I mean… we all want her to fight at her best, right?" He received positive nods from all of them. "Well, maybe it would be better to let her rest up… Then, when she battles, you could all really cheer her on!"
…
The group took a few seconds to process Ron's suggestion… before shock and horror swept through them. "Did we disturb her that much?! Will she be able to battle, if we keep bothering her?!"
"I think she'll be okay" the blonde trainer mollified, everyone turning their attention back to him. "I mean, she's probably SUPER happy about all of you supporting her. So… I wouldn't worry about it."
The small team calmed down somewhat, all looking to each other for assurances. "Right! You BET we're going to cheer her on and make some noise!"
Ron took a second to calm down. The line (and the rest of the trainers) had completely left while he'd been busy with Team Yell.
Something was thrust into his chest, Ron grabbing it without thinking.
"Take it! You said so yourself… it looks awesome, right?" the leader of the group reminded Ron, smiling at him. "We'll see you around- and don't worry about trying to spot us… you'll hear us pretty damn well, when we make some NOISE!"
The confused blonde stared at the team as they all walked out of the building, leaving him with the same poster he'd been admiring earlier. 'Well… at least they were cool about the whole thing… and this poster looks awesome with that mix of pink and black' he thought to himself.
Ron moved towards the receptionist, who was just finishing with someone else. "Thank you for that! The rest of the trainers were getting a bit restless…" the young man enthused, giving the ex-sidekick his key and floor number.
Ron watched the elevator open, rushing forward to enter before the doors shut again. "Made it…" He moved to push the button of his respective floor when a different hand shot forward to do the same.
"Ah… sorry, I-" said a gentle voice.
"It's okay, I-" Ron blurted out, cutting off as soon as he recognized who was in the elevator with him. Pale skin, brilliant emerald-colored eyes staring right into his in slight surprise… before switching to embarrassment. "Oh… hey Marnie!" the blonde teen greeted, smiling at the girl he'd briefly gotten to know. "So, I'm guessing you also arrived late…" he prompted, choosing a safe topic to avoid having a repeat of their last conversation.
"Y-Yeah… I had a talk with my big brother, just some family stuff…" she explained quietly.
"Cool! He's probably proud his sister is competing in the league!" Ron replied easily. Family was a good, safe subject… right?
"W-Well… I guess he is- hmm?" the girl stammered for a second, before noticing something clutched in the boy's hand.
Ron noticed her interest, presenting the poster to Marnie. "Oh… this? I just thought that it looked really cute" the blonde trainer explained nonchalantly, the blonde wasn't about to admit that he only had it because Team Yell had given it to him.
Marnie simply stared at the poster in shock, her face growing red.
'Oh shoot… did I said something wrong again?' Ron quickly tried to correct the situation. "Did I say cute? I meant cool! Like, really cool!"
His hopes took a quick dive when her blush deepened even further. She looked away, hiding her face with her bangs as much as she could. 'Did I say something wrong?' Ron wondered, staring at the poster and fully seeing it for the first time.
'Oh…' he mused, recognizing a familiar face in the image. A pair of cold, cool, emerald eyes stared back at him… clearly set in Marnie's- No, it wasn't just her face… the poster showed Marnie from her head down to her skirt, clearly staring directly at the viewer. 'Well… at least now I know who it is that Team Yell came to cheer for' Ron mused.
"Ah… I-I didn't mean to say, I just…" The blonde teen wasn't sure what he could say to make this any less awkward than it currently was. It was about this time Ron noticed they had yet to arrive at their floor- and considering how long they'd been talking, that was saying something. 'Did either of us ever even press it?' Ron wondered, his eyes glancing to the buttons… only to realize that they had yet to even move.
He wanted to face palm so badly at the moment, Ron simply extended his arm and pressed the button. The elevator jumped to life, moving upwards after a moment.
"Silly me… I forgot to push it…" His words were met with silence, the ravenette teen steadfastly refusing to look at him. 'Just great…' Ron's infamous luck with the fairer sex had never been good, but this was borderline ridiculous!
After a few seconds of awkward silence, the elevator doors opened with a short 'ding'. Both trainers walked out, glancing around.
Ron simply wanted to leave the girl in peace, she'd already suffered enough of his constant bothering, he was certain she would be glad to be rid of him. Ron quickly located his room number and prepared to open his door… when he noticed that Marnie was standing in front of the room right next to his own.
The girl seemed to be having an issue with her key, fumbling around before dropping it to the floor. She'd briefly glanced at the blonde boy before it fell, then quickly panicked and bent over to pick it up.
Ron moved quickly, now standing right behind the girl. As soon as she'd straightened back up, Marnie could feel his presence and see his shadow on her door. She turned slowly and stared up at Ron, he was much closer than before, his hand shot forward.
Marnie's legs trembled as his lips opened.
"Let me see that key for a sec…" Ron said, she handed him her key with a shaky hand.
…
"Ah… It's kind of bent here, see?" the blonde trainer prompted, showing the girl the issue and unlocking the door for her. "You might wanna tell the staff about it tomorrow. Well… goodnight, Marnie. Again, sorry about… you know… everything I did…" Ron apologized softly, smiling and scratching the back of his neck nervously. He approached his own room, opening the door.
"Wow… now that was a WHOLE NEW level of awkward…" the blonde teen mused, striding inside the room and closing the door. It was a small space, perfectly suited for a single person. It had a clean-looking twin bed, a built-in closet, as well as a small desk off to the side. It wasn't the best he'd ever seen- but considering his stay was limited to only tonight, it was great! Ron also noticed a door next to his bed that led to an en suit bathroom… all in all, this would serve its purpose perfectly.
'May as well deal with this now…' Ron reflected, glancing at his two pokeballs while getting ready to take a shower. Ron quickly called out his Pokémon. The pair stared up at him, curious as to where exactly they were. "Hey girls! This is where we'll be staying the night, I just wanted to give you a chance to stretch your legs a bit, okay?"
Cinder yelped happily, nodding. Tear instantly bounced up onto the bed, before leaping into Ron's arms once more. The fire Pokémon made angry noises, glaring at the small grass Pokémon.
Before the issue could worsen the blonde teen sat down on the bed, placing Tear next to him and petting Cinder. "I know this is all new to us-" More to him than anyone. "-but, could you two try and get along? …please?" the blonde teen practically begged. Milo had proven to him that Pokémon understood humans, so that meant Ron could simply talk to them, right?
Both of the small Pokémon stared at one another for a few seconds. Tear adopted a frightened look once more and nuzzled into the blonde's side, Cinder growled at her in response.
'Not gonna be that easy…' Ron sighed, softly petting them both. All he could do was ask (and hope), but it was probably going to take some time for them to warm up to one another. Ron quickly opened his bag, pulling out some food for the pair, before heading for the shower.
Both Cinder and Tear stared at each other for some time, reflecting on what their trainer had explained and his request that they get along with one another. Cinder's only response was to ignore the grass type, diving into the bowl Ron had prepared for her. Tear stared silently at the door her trainer had passed through, she inched away from Cinder (giving the Vulpix a wary look), before she slowly started eating as well.
After a few minutes both had finished their meals, simply choosing to rest upon the bed (a safe distance between them). Suddenly, there was a soft knock on the door, both Pokémon looked up.
Cinder was the first one on her feet, her ears pointed towards the door. She hopped off the bed, staring at the entrance with her head tilted to the side, the Vulpix heard the soft knocks again.
Her human was still in the other room, getting ready before bed. He would probably need to answer the door as soon as he was done, so why not help him out?
With a quick use of Extrasensory the door handle moved, unlocking with a quiet click. Cinder shot forward, nudging the door with her snout and opening the door completely.
"Ron, I'm s- Oh? Hello there…" greeted the ravenette, human girl now standing in the doorway.
Cinder didn't recognize her, simply staring up at the girl with wonder in her face.
The girl bent down, petting the small fox Pokémon. "Oh, you're so cute… are you one of Ron's Pokémon?" she asked gently, favoring the Vulpix with a soft smile.
Cinder yelped happily at the mention of her human's name. This girl must be one of his friends, he'd be so happy with her for helping out! The small Pokémon's attention was caught by the door next to her opening up.
"Ah… I really needed that…" Ron declared, stepping out of the bathroom. The boy was fresh from his shower, dressed only in a pair of pajama pants with a towel draped over his neck. After sleeping in the wild, a hot shower had been EXACTLY what he'd needed. Especially considering all of the excitement he'd had today!
Ron's eyes snapped open, clearly surprised to find anyone in his room besides his Pokémon. While it was true he'd been surprised by Kim entering his room in the past, and the blonde boy could take care of any intruder that came along, Ron genuinely hadn't expected to see the girl he'd ran into inside the elevator.
"H-Hey Marnie… what are you doing here?" he asked, a little embarrassed at being caught exiting the shower… at least he had his pants on! That was something to be thankful for, right? 'But, what is she doing here? …and how did she get in? Did I forget to lock the door again?!'
The female trainer was frozen in the middle of petting Cinder, staring up at the trainer she'd come to talk to. Marnie had felt bad about being so silent and distant to someone who seemed so nice. It was just that… with Ron calling her cute and pretty, having a poster of her, it had all left Marnie really embarrassed for some reason (despite the fact her fans did the same thing to her ALL THE TIME).
She wanted to apologize for being rude, wish him good luck in the gym challenge, maybe even boast about herself being the one who was going to win in the end and that he'd better be prepared for a tough fight.
But, right now, it was really hard to remember ANY of those plans. She was far too busy staring up at him, his body steaming hot (with literal steam pouring off of his well-muscled torso). His hair looked quite damp, several stray drops of water running down his abs and into his pajama pants.
Marnie's face nearly exploded with red, the girl heating up more with every passing second. Her eyes continued wandering over Ron's form… why was she here again? Marnie wasn't sure, she'd completely lost her train of thought at this point.
A hand waved in front of her face for a few moments, she finally snapped back to reality.
"Umm… are you okay Marnie?" Ron asked, the girl's silent staring leaving him worried. The girl probably felt uncomfortable, seeing him like this. Even more so after what had happened in both the stadium and the elevator. Talk about a whole new level of embarrassing.
Marnie suddenly snapped her head to the side, shooting up in less than a second. Her mouth opened in an attempt to speak- before she closed it tightly, simply running out the door without a second glance.
…
'Great…' Ron mused, walking over to close the door. He'd considered giving chase, maybe apologizing for making her uncomfortable, before deciding against it. He concluded that it would be better to simply put a shirt on and let things cool off, before making things even harder on himself.
At his feet, Ron could see Cinder playfully scratching his leg. His Pokémon stared up at him, as if asking if she'd done a good job. 'Yeah, you totally did… if your plan was to embarrass me and make it impossible to apologize properly to Marnie' the blonde moaned ruefully. Ron simply smiled, hoisting the small fox Pokémon into his arms.
"Yes, you did a good job Cinder" he soothed, his terrible luck was no reason to withhold praise. After all, surely the small fox Pokémon had only wanted to help him.
The Vulpix nuzzled into Ron's embrace, rubbing her cheek against his neck, before they both noticed Tear. The grass Pokémon came floating over to join in on the (now) group hug, Cinder growling at her once more.
Ron sighed to himself before moving to bed, hoping that he'd be able to sort out all these issues that just kept popping up.
