A/N: Firstly, I am SO sorry for not sticking to the weekly updating thing. I intended to update that following week, but it was my birthday so I got distracted and then the following weekends kind of just slipped by. Unfortunately this is a super short boring chapter so I don't even have a proper apology gift. But I guess it's better than nothing.
Secondly, I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas?
Thirdly, thank you SO much for all your lovely reviews, I keep reading them and they really make me smile, so thank you a million everyone.
Katara's POV:
Entering my dorm, I plop my backpack on the ground before closing the door behind me. My eyes flicker to my open laptop, but for once the desire to study is absent. The events of the day still weighing me down more than I'd like to admit. I slide down my closed door until I'm sitting on the ground, my knees huddled into my chest as I rest my chin on my kneecaps. 'I really hope Aang is alright. His absence from his dorm is worrying.'
My thoughts return to Azula and I can't help the scowl that appears on my face at the image of her taunting face. 'Who does she think she is?! Bullying people like that without even a hint of remorse. You'd think people would grow up by that age! She needs to be taught a lesson.' I think angrily, but when Sokka's warning echoes in my mind, I find my shoulders slumping. 'Not that I can be the one to teach it to her.' I think glumly.
Just before I can go on another silent tirade I hear the sound of cluttering wheels outside of my room. My eyes widen and I shoot up from my position and fling open the door to find Aang skating past. 'Thank the spirits.'
"Aang!" I call out, earning the boy's attention as he twirls briefly to see who's calling him. He grins at me before pivoting round and skating back until he stands before me.
"Hey Katara! How was your first day?" Aang queries with a relaxed expression. I scrutinise him, 'he seems a bit too relaxed for someone who's supposed to be either expelled or told off.'
"It was good thank you. What about you, I didn't get you in trouble did I?" I question anxiously, but the boy just waves his hand casually.
"Nah. The only perk of being a 'genius' is I can get away with bending some of the rules a bit. Plus the chancellor knows what trouble the Ozai kids get up to anyway." Aang states as he does finger quotes around the word 'genius'. I release a sigh of relief.
"Thank the spirits." I breathe out, prompting a quirked eyebrow from the child prodigy.
"You're attached to me already?" He teases as he goes to pick up his skateboard and tucks it under his arm. I roll my eyes before crossing my arms.
"More like I didn't want to get someone expelled on my first day." I retort dryly. I watch as the boy shrugs, not at all bothered by my response.
"Fair enough. Though, I'd advise that you limit the heroics. This university has some very strict rules and they aren't a lenient bunch. I can always chip in if you need help, but it's probably best if I don't annoy the chancellor too much. I can only get away with so much." Aang advices while I frown at him in annoyance.
"I can look after myself." I shoot back. The boy blinks twice before lifting both of his hands out defensively.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to imply you can't." He apologises with wide eyes, making him look every bit as young as his age. I chew my lip before dropping my head slightly.
"No, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have snapped. I guess I thought things at university would be easy, but it's…not." I admit in disappointment. I look up when I feel something nudge my elbow to be greeted with a warm expression.
"It's a change for sure, but I know you'll enjoy it. It just takes some time to get used to it. If you want, I can show you around campus some more? To make you feel a bit more at home." Aang suggests and I can't help but soften my eyes at the sweet gesture.
"Thank you, that would be great. Maybe…maybe we could have a film night or something so we could get to know each other better?" I propose hopefully. A flicker of hesitation crosses those grey orbs of his before he nods slowly.
"That sounds like a great idea. Maybe we could invite Haru too?" The boy voices. I stamp down the suspicion that courses through me at his reaction before nodding.
"That sounds perfect. Is any day good for you?" I query as the boy drops his skateboard back to the ground.
"Haru and I were going to hang out on Saturday anyway, so we can make it a room-mate thing instead. We'll knock at around 7?" The child genius queries as he puts one foot on his skateboard.
"Awesome." I confirm with a smile. Just as he puts his other foot on the ground to skate away, I can't help but bite my lip in thought. "Erm…" I utter, causing the boy to pause as he looks back to me with a questioning eyebrow. "…I want to thank you for saving me earlier. If you didn't…" I trail off with a shiver. The Airbender watches me warmly before shaking his head.
"Anytime. I really did admire you sticking up for Haru. I wish there were more people like you." Aang praises as he waves goodbye. My features soften at the compliment and I watch as he skates down the corridor until he stops in front of his dorm. He unlocks his door and when he catches me still looking, he grins before waving a final time. I return the wave and quickly enter my room, ignoring my sudden spike in heart rate.
I cross my room and throw myself onto my bed just as my phone goes off. With a groan I push myself up and dig into my pockets for my phone. My face splits into a grin when I glance at the caller ID and I go to answer the phone.
"Hi darling, I wanted to see how your first day went?" The gentle maternal voice greets.
"Hi mum, boy do I have a lot to tell you…" I start and spend the rest of the evening filling in my mum with the day's events. When we finally call it a night, I can't help but feel lighter and ready to face day two.
A/N: Ok so unfortunately the new term starts next week and it's so heavy that I low key might cry haha. But I won't have time to stick to my weekly updating schedule as I wanted unfortunately. I'll probably try for monthly updates, but I can't make any promises, but I will try my very best not to leave you guys waiting for too long.
I really need to learn to write several chapters in advance before I post a new story huh? Next chapter I think will be pretty interesting, I haven't written it, but I have a rough idea of what I want to do
Anyway, wishing you all a very HAPPY NEW YEAR! May 2021 be filled with hopes and dreams and a healthier, happier world for you all.
