A/N: Guys- I suck. And I'm sorry. I was doing so well with the weekly uploads and then I just couldn't with school and all the stress and just ARGH. I'm going to try to come back with this whole quarantine situation (Stay safe!) and with summer but no promises. :( Honestly, rereading FETL just makes me want to delete the whole thing because it's so OOC and crappy writing. Maybe one day I'll come back and fix it... but for now I need to finish this story so I can work on other projects years in the making (like Kataang Week 2017... oops).
IMPORTANT: This chapter goes back in time a little, with Suki's and Toph's POV about their announcement!
ALSO IMPORTANT: I know absolutely nothing about high school dances (I've only ever been to 1 elementary school "dance") so if anyone could help me with what they're like by PMing me or in a review, that would be much appreciated!
Without further ado, the story:
Chapter 20: Regrets and Happiness
Last Time:
"Azula gave me a dare. She dared me to make out with Ty Lee."
The girl's eyes widened as she gulped, not sure if she wanted to hear what happened.
"I actually considered it for a second, Tara. And I hate myself for that."
"...Did you?"
Aang shook his head vehemently...
"...The only two options I had were telling everyone that day or telling them I had a girlfriend and waiting. I didn't want you to be too mad at me for lack of notice, so I went with the latter..."
"...So we're going to tell everyone at the Valentine's Dance?"
"That's the plan? If you don't want to, we don't have to."
"No, I really want to. It's just... what about your reputation?"
The airbender didn't miss a beat and kissed her again, on her nose.
"Darling, at this point I'm far too in love with you to give a fuck..."
"...I love you too, Kat. Thank you."
The girl smiled, cuddling into his chest.
"Forever and always, Aang. Forever and always..."
"Aang's got a girlfriend, Aang's got a girlfriend," Sokka sing-songed around him.
"Can't believe the airhead actually did it," Suki muttered quietly, half-smiling at the guys' teasing of Aang and his girlfriend's text.
Toph snorted, her overly perceptive ears catching every word.
"Makes him a better person than we were to her..."
Suki whipped her head around to stare at the blind girl.
"We're not going back to that, Toph," she hissed.
"She made her choice. She chose not to join us."
"But we chose to abandon her and scorn her."
Suki smirked.
"Big words from a little girl."
The earthbender scoffed in reply.
"You can't honestly tell me that you haven't ever regretted what we did?"
A lengthy silence ensued.
"I- I'm not sure anymore."
Toph sighed.
"Are we telling Sokka?"
Suki frowned.
"We should. But..."
"But?"
"Well, it's not ours to tell. Besides, like she said, we don't get to interfere now, Toph."
The girls sighed.
"Two years too late."
"Oh my god! The dance is so close!"
"First of all, it's the ball, and I know! THIS FRIDAY!" (Today is Tuesday, February 12th, 2019, the next day after Chp 19 as well)
"And I heard that AANG JIANG, the Avatar, is going to reveal who his girlfriend is during the unmasking!"
"Right?! That girl must be the luckiest girl in the world right now!"
"Ooh- when are you going shopping for your dress?"
Katara rolled her eyes.
Just another day at Four Elements High.
Except...
Katara was bouncing and smiling endlessly on the inside.
Did she think the girls' enthusiasm over one little dance was a bit silly?
Yes.
Did she think it was a bit much for a holiday generally known as just a Hallmark day?
Yes.
But was she bouncing with delight on the inside anyways with the idea of being able to be Aang's girlfriend publicly consuming her thoughts?
Undeniably YES!
Suddenly, she saw a flash of orange swoop around her, grey eyes winking, and heard a rather deep voice whispering in her mind.
"Hey, stranger."
Struggling to contain a smile while sitting in her seat and unpacking she replied.
"Hey."
She facepalmed mentally.
"Ugh. Nice one, Kat. Your incredible boyfriend is all sexy with that damn smile of his and all you have to say back is, 'hEy.'"
"Well, I was unaware that simply saying a hello would make me all "sexy with that damn smile of mine" but the sentiment is nevertheless appreciated, Love."
"And I thought that aloud."
"Back to my sexiness, Tara, back to my sexiness."
The waterbender rolled her eyes while jotting down what Ms. Ursa just said about literary devices.
"So humble of you, dear Avatar. Also, what is your obsession with calling me anything except 'Katara'?"
"First of all, please never call me 'dear Avatar' again. It's rather nice to have someone who doesn't see me as just that title. Second of all, I'm your boyfriend- I get to have nicknames for you which include not ever calling you 'Katara' but rather 'Tara', 'Kat', 'Penguin', 'My Forever Girl'... shall I go on?"
"Spare me- please. Now SHUSH! I have to copy down these notes!"
"Whyyy?"
The airbender pouted.
"Why can't you just keep talking to me?"
The girl discretely raised an eyebrow at him.
"Because- it's MY NOTES that you'll be copying down. Besides, we have a test on all of it 'd know that if you had bothered to pay attention..."
"Oh. Really? Shoot. Carry on then."
A long silence passed in their minds while Katara furiously scribbled down notes in her neat, curly script and Aang doodled in the margins of his blank paper.
At last, the bell rang, and with it, the two headed to their last class of the day, thankfully, Study Hall.
"Taaaarrrraaaa. Kat! Pay attention to meeeeee."
The waterbender whipped her head up to glare at the airbender across the room, shaking her head with a smile teasing the corners of her lips.
"What now, Airhead?"
"I wanna talk to you."
"Well, I figured that much."
"Do you have a dress and stuff for Friday?"
"Maaayyybe..."
Aang raised an eyebrow playfully.
"Yes. But you can't see any of it until the night of!"
"How will I find you?"
"Don't worry, Sweetie. I'll come to you. Guys aren't wearing masks, right?"
"Supposedly- but they've already changed their minds like 3 times since announcing the ball so I have no clue. How will you find me if I am?"
It was Katara's turn to raise an eyebrow skeptically.
"Not to offend you, Love, but bright blue tattoos all over your hands, head, and body in general aren't exactly subtle or all that common..."
"Oh. Riiggghhhhttt."
Katara shook her head, trying to stifle the grin that inevitably formed.
"You make me so happy with the dumbest things, you know that?"
"Glad to be of service, ma'am."
The waterbender giggled, earning her some weird looks.
"Love you, Kat."
"Love you, too, Airhead."
A/N: Mostly a filler chapter, but I thought it was cute! The further I get with this, the more you guys will see Traitors (Suki, Sokka, Toph) POV. I'll also try to make more multi faceted chapters like this with 2 perspectives. (If the next chapter isn't up by the 19th of April, PM me to yell at me, please!)
