Chapter 4
A/N: Sorry this is taking even longer than expected. My anxiety has been through the roof any graduate school has taken up all of my time. This likely won't be posted until January even though I'm starting to write this in November. So happy holidays!
Remedial Goodness 101. One of the most boring and pointless classes that the five villain kids are being forced to take. None of the teens are paying attention to Fairy Godmother. Carlos and Jay are shoving each other and laughing. Evie is painting her nails poison apple red. Mal is sketching out Fairy Godmother's wand in perfect detail. Only answering questions when she is called on. The only teen not sitting in the last two tables is Hadley. She picked the table closest to the whiteboard on the same side as the boys, trying to get as much distance as she can between her and her older sister. Unlike the others, Hadley is attempting to pay attention and take notes. With Remedial Goodness as her last class of the day, she didn't have enough energy to stay fully awake; resulting in the blue-haired teen starting to doze off every other line of notes. All written in Greek. Fairy Godmother wasn't fully aware of the teenagers not paying attention, she was too excited about getting the opportunity to teach again. "Someone hands you a crying baby. Do you A) lock it in a tower, B) carve out it's heart, or C) give it a bottle," the fairy dramatically asks. Looking at her five students and just now noticing that they are not paying attention. She lightly taps the table in front of Hadley to wake the teen. Out of the five teens, only Evie raised her hand. "Yes, Evie!"
"What's the second one?" the blue-haired princess asks after Fairy Godmother calls on her. Even though there are no princes in this class, she has to keep up the dumb act. Especially after hearing that Hadley is considered royalty, the youngest VK could have connections to a prince! The daughter of the Evil Queen will have to make sure to be on Hadley's good side. If things with Chad don't work out, Hadley's cousin Herkie may be a good alternate. From what she has seen so far, Herkie sticks around Hadley and was protecting her from Chad when he tried to shove Hadley earlier. If Evie befriends the daughter of Hades, it would give her a chance to get close to Herkie before he leaves for college next year.
Hadley scoffs when she hears Evie's answer to the question. "You would carve out it's heart. It would shut the baby up quick," she states. Teaching these teens to be good would take longer than Fairy Godmother expected. So far, only Mal has answered questions correctly.
"Not quite. Mal, what is the answer?" the headmistress asks, hoping the daughter of Maleficent will get another correct answer. Perhaps one of the children was raised with proper manners and goodness in mind. After seeing the reports from the Isle, she expected Evie and Carlos to have the easiest time in this class. Jay and Mal both had thefts of vandalism. Hadley had multiple reports of arson, having burnt down a couple buildings when someone went against her gang. If it wasn't for Hadley's health, she would never even be considered for Auradon Prep. This class may need two semesters and not just one.
"C. You give it a bottle," Mal answers without looking up from her sketch. After raising Malice for the last four years, she picked up some childcare skills. She just never mentioned it to her gang. Hadley is the only one who was aware of Mal raising Malice and would occasionally help.
"Correct. Again," Fairy Godmother smiles. Thinking that with more work, all of these kids will be on the path to goodness.
"Dang! You're on fire girl!" Carlos comments, looking over at Mal with a grin.
"How are you getting all of these right?" Hadley questions. Goodness is punishable by torture on the Isle. Death is seen as being too merciful. Mal was considered one to fear despite mostly causing small time trouble. The younger daughter of Hades is now thinking that Mal's power came from Maleficent not Mal earning that respect herself.
"Just pick the one that doesn't sound like any fun. It's not that hard," Mal says as if pretending to be good is the easiest thing in the world. She looks up and makes eye contact with her younger sister. When Hadley smirks and her eyes flash from yellow to gold, Mal quickly looks away. Hades' eyes don't glow like a dragon. So how does Hadley have the same dragon trait as Maleficent and Mal. Mal will have to make sure to pull Hadley off to the side after class. First the known hot head is given a solo mission and then this. The younger demigoddess is hiding something, and the purple-haired dragon is determined to find out what.
"That makes so much sense," Evie says as a short brunette walks into the classroom. Squeaking and rushing past the four teens that look like they could eat her alive. Clipboard clutched to her chest.
All the Core Four watch this mousey quiet girl as she sheepishly hands the clipboard to Fairy Godmother. "I need you to sign the early dismissal forms your coronation," the girl says. Nervously looking at the VKs. Only making eye contact with Hadley, who pretends to bite at the other freshman with a wink. The girl squeaks and tries to hide behind the middle-aged fairy. The blue-haired demigoddess chuckles before smirking. Clearly not hiding the fact that spooking the brunette amuses her. Once the paper is signed, the small teen tries to slip away before her mother decides to introduce her.
Before the teen could escape, Fairy Godmother held onto her daughter's shoulders. "Everyone, this is my daughter Jane. Jane, this is Mal, Evie, Jay, Carlos, and Hadley."
"Hi everyone. Don't mind me, as you were," Jane quickly says as she hides behind her clipboard. Quite embarrassed that her mom introduced her to the young villains. She squeaks and hurries past the four teens in the back. Leaving the room as quickly as possible as Mal watches her leave.
"You find a vial of poison. Do you A. put it in the King's wine, B. paint it on an apple, or C. turn it over to the proper authorities," Fairy Godmother dramatically asks. Smiling when everyone, expect for Mal, raises their hands. Jay starts shoving Carlos onto the table, using the younger boy as leverage to get his own hand higher. "Jay."
"C. You turn it in to the proper authorities," Jay says proudly. Knowing that it was right because it was the most boring answer. He let's Carlos go and leans forward onto the desk. Not budging when the white- and black-haired boy punches him.
"I was going to say C," Carlos grumbles as he shoves the older boy.
Jay smirks and puts Carlos into a headlock before pulling him onto the table. "But I said it first," Jay teases as he starts to rub his knuckles on Carlos' head. Carlos struggling to escape from the son of Jafar.
"Boys!" Fairy Godmother says trying to get the attention of the wrestling teens. Evie chuckling as the sisters roll their eyes. With a quick snap, the paper in front of Jay bursts into blue flames. Not long enough to burn the boys or set off the sprinkler systems, just long enough to startle the boys out of the fight. "Hadley, put out the fire. Boys, your energy will be better use out on the tourney field," Fairy Godmother orders. Within seconds, the flames die down as the boys settle back into their seats. "Class dismissed. Hadley, stay back a minute."
All the teens start packing up their supplies. Hadley not leaving the room with the others. "This is about the fire, isn't it? It's not magic. The fire is just… it's part of who I am. I was even able to do it on the Isle," she says after the other villain kids leave. They all knew that she set fire on the Isle, but everyone assumed it was done the old-fashioned way. She found that holding her flames in causes her to lose control. A fire starts and she can't stop it. It'll consume her and the world around her.
"Using powers is illegal in most of Auradon. Only Arendale and Olympus allow magic and other powers," Fairy Godmother gently explains as she sits next to the teen. With all the chaos with the hospital yesterday, the headmistress figures that the magic law was never explained. "How did you use your powers inside the barrier?"
Hadley sighs and snaps her fingers, a small blue flame popping up on her thumb. The flame forming the outline of a skull. "It kept me alive. Unlike my mortal siblings, I'm only 1% mortal. My dad… he still had powers in the barrier until I was around 5. He transferred the remnants of his fire to me to keep me alive. He and my half-brother, Hadie, are the only people on the Isle who know about it," she explains as she shrinks the flame down until it disappears.
"Have you tried not using your flames? Until we find the cure, you'll have to stay in Auradon City," Fairy Godmother says. She will have to add the powers to Hadley's file and report it to the Royal Council. The only agreed to bringing over the daughter of Hades because of her illness. They may insist on the teen being sent back to the Isle unless Hercules can convince them to have her transfer to Olympus Academy instead.
Hadley nods and starts to twirl her electric blue hair. "I lose control and people wind up getting hurt. I don't mean for it to happen. I just get angry and… I never meant to hurt anyone…" Over the years, Hadley wound up gaining respect as a future villainous because of the fires she caused and how calculated they seemed to be. In reality, she would just get into a fight with someone and lost control. Hadley knew better than to correct anyone and had to hide her remorse over it.
Fairy Godmother puts an arm around the teen's shoulders. The fact that the teen has remorse over the arson cases against her proves that the child isn't the villainous the file says she is. "I'll make some calls to Queen Elsa. If your powers are linked to your emotions, she can help you. Now go on and get a start on your homework," she says before getting out of the chair.
Hadley gives Fairy Godmother a sad smile as she grabs her blue and black bag and gets up. Quickly leaving the classroom and heads towards the lockers. Mal was at the classroom doors and falls into step with Hadley. "We need to talk. Your dorm. One hour." Mal says before going to the lockers to find Jane. With an eye roll, Hadley goes off towards the dorms.
A/N: This is a normal chapter than my norm and I'm actually needing to separate it into 2 parts. Enjoy!
