Career Exploration
"Barry!" Kara called Barry over. She was sitting in the kitchen area. "We need to talk."
"That's never good," Barry said, pausing as he entered the kitchen. He had to get to set for filming of Star Trek, but with his speed he had some time. "Is this about… well…?" It had been nearly two months since Crisis and since Alura's funeral. Barry had not brought the topic of marriage up again, holding true to his deal with Kara, but part of him wondered if Kara was thinking it.
"I don't think so," Kara said. "It's about Rae."
"Oh?" Barry asked confused.
"She's catching up in school. Her speed helps. She's 16 now," Kara stated. "But she's still very… well, she doesn't seem interested in anything. Besides running and she can't make a career out of that."
"The Olympic committee would disagree, even if her speed would put others at a disadvantage," Barry mused.
"That's not what I mean," Kara sighed.
"Or I'm sure the police would love to have an actual speedster on the force if she wanted to join," Barry continued, but stopped laughing at his own jokes at the look Kara gave him. "Do you want her to go into real high school next year?" She had spent the almost-year she had been here being home schooled.
"No… but well, I am just concerned. I think she should do some career exploration, to think about her future," Kara stated. "Maybe shadow some people. We do have a large amount of people with a lot of different careers around us."
"Ah, I get it," Barry said. "And I have an idea." Barry took out his cellphone and called up a number. Kara paused. "Hey, I am on my way in, but I got a question: Do you need a teenage extra for today?" Barry paused for a moment. "Really? That would be great! Look, I'm bringing my little sister in and she would be bored just sitting there. She could easily take that part." Barry paused again. "Thanks, see you soon."
"Barry?" Kara questioned.
"I got Rae a part on Star Trek. Today," Barry said, and Kara paused.
"That was fast – even for you," Kara said, wondering exactly how Barry could get Rae on filming that day.
"We always need extras and new extras are always wanted too – especially teenagers. They were going to use an extra in their 20s for this part, but now they have an actual teenager. She even gets a line," Barry said and Kara had to blink again. "Rae! Get in here."
"Yeah?" Rae said running up, having been in her room.
"You're coming to set with me. You're going to be an extra," Barry said, and Rae frowned. "Come on. Get a little extra money to use however you want. A little career exploration for your future."
Rae shrugged and then gave a nod, following Barry out.
"That was a little too easy," Kara said, looking at her watch. Topar had gone to school a while ago and she had time before she had to pick Carly and Dawn up anyway. Carter also had a day off so was at home doing schooling. She had some time for herself, which was good since she needed to do some things in private.

Barry had loved the alien makeup they had put Rae in, and he loved the fact Danny Crusher was in the scene with her on the planet. In fact, the line Rae got to spoke was to his character anyway. Barry was smirking to himself, thinking about Rae getting into acting. If she liked this, Barry was sure he could pull some strings and make her a new cadet for Starfleet Academy, probably as a new character and not this alien extra. He would have so much fun working besides her in projects.
"Hey dude," it was Wally who, was still in his own alien makeup. "I think your little sister wants to kill you."
"What do you mean?" Barry asked, confused as he looked to his co-star and friend. "She did great."
"You didn't see the evil eye she was giving you by the end of the final take of that scene," Wally said, making Barry frown. "I mean if looks could kill… I think alien kids wanted to take a phaser to Danny when watching the scene."
Barry had not noticed that at all in his daydreaming about getting Rae an actual part in Star Trek, but it was when Rae came out from the back, the alien makeup off of her, he realized something was wrong. "Rae!" Barry called to her, but she ignored him as she headed for the door. "Give me a second…" he told Wally.
Barry rushed after her, catching Rae just outside before she could run off. "Where are you going?" Barry asked, confused.
"Home," Rae said.
"I still have scenes to film," Barry protested. "Don't you want to wait around…?" Barry finally noticed the looks Rae was giving him. "You weren't happy with doing the scene, were you?"
"I felt like an idiot," Rae snapped. "It's just so dumb. The horrible make up making my skin itch. The stupid lines and standing on certain spots. Look, I find TV shows interesting, but being an actor made me feel like a fool. I would rather forget this ever happened, no pun intended, and I don't want to stick around here anymore."
Barry could see the glare she was still giving him and knew she wasn't happy. Barry knew better than to argue with a girl. Acting wasn't for everyone and seemed Rae found it embarrassing.
"I'll tell Kara you're on your way," Barry sighed, his hopes of mentoring Rae into acting dashed.
Rae gave a nod and seemed to know not to say anything else as she went off and ran. Barry grabbed his phone from where he placed it during filming. "Hey Kara, Rae is on her way back," Barry said.
"Not an actress then?" Kara asked.
"She might want to kill me for a bit," Barry said, and actually heard a bit of a giggle. "I got to get back to set. Love you." Barry heard Kara mumble a 'love you' back before he hung up and went to put his phone down. "Maybe Topar in a few years will want to be an actor." Barry thought to himself as he went to get into the next scene.

Caitlin smiled at the young speedster. After the failure the day before of Barry showing Rae acting, Kara had asked Caitlin if she could take Rae today. They were standing in the former STAR Labs which was now the STAR Convention Hall.
"Okay, so STAR Con has three official cons – we do our general cons, which is actors and actresses from anywhere; then we have our more focused cons – sci-fi and science cons where we get actors who are in sci-fi work; then we have our Hero Con, for actors who portray heroes real or pretend. Each con we do has a twist to them as well. Like our general con we do stunt shows and exploration on special effects. The sci-fi con we bring in real scientist to show the latest inventions. As for the hero con, we have had some special appearances from real heroes and explanation on their powers. People love the twists we do. Currently on our website we are having a vote on what theme a fourth STAR Con should take. I think a Fantasy Con and Musical Con are neck and neck."
Caitlin was getting into this as she talked and noticed Rae was just standing there, a glazed look on her face. "Now, my title is Con Coordinator. I keep control of who is appearing at what con, make sure the announcements head on all our social media, plus organize and make sure the hall is ready for the event. We also rent out the convention hall sometimes when we're not using it so I keep track of who is using the hall when and why – with help from Dr. Wells of course." Caitlin smiled when she saw Harrison come up.
"You do even more than you say, Caitlin. I would have been lost without you helping me, Barry, and Kayla with this," Harry said with a smile. "Showing Rae around?"
"Some career exploration," Caitlin said. "Do you have any questions?"
"Yeah. Why?" Rae asked.
"Why what?" Caitlin asked.
"Why do people even want to come to these things?" Rae asked. Caitlin frowned. "I mean, you're meeting people who make millions, pretending to be someone else, and you give them money to sign a photo and take a picture with you."
"People like meeting the actors and actresses behind their favorite characters," Harry pointed out.
"But it's not like they are who they pretend to be. Barry is not a pilot of a spaceship, and Kayla isn't a mermaid. They are normal people who are good at lying and pretending to be something they are not," Rae protested, and Caitlin groaned that The Little Mermaid was the first part Rae came out with; possibly because it was the first thing Rae had seen of Kayla's since she arrived on the Earth right before it came out. "And what if you meet these people and they are absolute jerks? Wouldn't it ruin the show for you and their future characters?"
"Well at cons they are mostly on their best behavior," Caitlin said, and Harry gave her a look, both remembering the fight between Kayla and her Magical Creature costars at San Diego con. "Well… usually."
"It just seems like a pointless activity," Rae said.
"I guess you don't want to help me look over who we should invite?" Caitlin asked. She had been planning on having Rae help her choose people for their upcoming con and get in touch with their agents to see if they would come
"No, not really," Rae said shaking her head. "I'm going to go running." Before either could say anything, Rae ran off.
"She's not afraid to talk her mind," Harry said.
"Honestly, she should probably learn to have a filter," Caitlin said. The girl with no memory was turning from a quiet girl who seemed to have no personality to a very opinionate girl who didn't know when to shut up.

Clark was excited the next day when Kara had asked him to take Rae and show her journalism, but not as excited as Lois. Lois had heard and decided she alone would mentor Rae into the next big journalist, calling Rae, the perfect person to mold.
"What exactly are you getting ready?" Clark asked, as he came up with Rae in tow.
"Ah, Rae," Lois said with a grin, putting an arm around her and ignoring her husband as she took the papers she had been sorting. "Come with me and I will show you the wonders of journalism. We need more females in the game."
Clark sighed as Lois took Rae away, wondering if he should listen in with his super hearing but then shrugged it off. He went to go look over his article and figured Lois must have been working her magic, since it seemed Rae had stayed longer with her than with Caitlin.
But soon Clark saw Lois stalking off and could feel from his bond she wasn't in a good mood.
"Rae?" Clark called her over to his desk; Rae having walked out of the room Lois had taken her to. "What happened?"
"Lois went into this big speech about journalism and showed me all her articles, including one that got her some award," Rae snapped, and Clark nodded. "And then went over her current article. About something you – Superman did." Clark nodded again. "And all I said seems like the job is ancient."
"Ancient?" Clark paused.
"Well, the article she is working on is over and done with. I got an alert on my phone the minute Superman was done," Rae explained. "It's already been talked about on the news. Why do we need an article about it? It seems everything that goes in these newspapers can easily be found from somewhere quicker and faster. Why do we need to make these?"
Clark sighed. The idea newspapers were out of time and going downhill was not new. Lois and he had heard it before, but having it said so bluntly by someone Lois had decided to try to mentor into journalism had to hurt.
"Should I go back to Kara?" Rae asked.
"Yes," Clark said with a nod and Rae exited the building, Clark not worried as he knew she could find her way. Mentally preparing himself, Clark decided to go see how his wife was.

The next day Kara was knocking on Kayla's door with Rae next to her. Kayla opened the door, with Krypto by her side like usual.
"Didn't she already reject acting?" Kayla asked, looking over Rae, knowing of Kara's career exploration plan for Rae.
"Well, she was going to be with Lex and Lena today but somehow not even an hour in she blew up a lab," Kara explained, and Kayla raised her eyebrows, not sure whether to laugh or not at this. "Look, could you just take her for the day? You're just here, I have to be at the Grants."
The Grants. You could show her nannying, Kayla pointed out, switching to their bond.
Rao no. Rae hates looking after kids. She's fine with Topar, and your girls, but actual nannying? Definitely not her, Kara reasoned.
So, you're pawning Rae off on me? You know, using everyone as career fodder is no way to handle your problem, Kayla thought in her head.
Well, what do you know? Kara asked, exasperated.
Everything. You think you can hide this from me? Kayla thought to Kara.
Then you know I need time alone without worrying about her offending a family member or blowing something up, Kara thought back to her.
"Fine," Kayla said out loud. "Come on in, Rae." Rae gave a shrug, knowing the pair had been talking through their bond due to the long silence, but walked passed Kayla and Krypto anyway. "She'll be fine here. Go have that stress-free alone time you have been wanting for days."
"Thank you," Kara's voice barely went above a whisper as she backed away from her sister's front door.
Rae had sat on a couch and Krypto had come up to her along with his mate, Roxy, who had been staying over for a few days. Kayla took her seat back as she continued reading over proposals. "What are you doing?" Rae asked looking at all the papers on the table and the one in Kayla's hand.
"Wicked's filming is done, and I really need to choose my next project," Kayla explained. "I might want to think about filming abroad again…"
"Why?" Rae asked.
"That question is better left unanswered," Kayla stated, mysteriously.
"Okay," Rae shrugged. Paused, then looked back to Kayla. "Why do you act? It seems like it would be too childish for you," Rae asked.
"I like it," Kayla said as she continued reading one of the scripts.
"Why?" Rae asked.
"You know, with all the questions you ask maybe we should have you shadow Laurel," Kayla pointed out. "You might be angling for a becoming a lawyer." Kayla looked over at Rae who gave a shrug at her comment but was still looking at Kayla, seeming to wait for an answer to her before question. "Look, you have some points on acting but overall, I like it. I like getting out of my zone and making it believable I am not who I am, making people believe I can be so many different characters. It's a challenge for me. It's a passion."
Kayla paused as she talked. "You know, you keep on being thrown at people to see their passions. Has anyone actually asked you what your passionate about?" Kayla asked.
"No," Rae said.
"So?" Kayla asked.
"I don't know," Rae said honestly, and Kayla sighed; she should have figured that one out.
"You know, I've got a friend I think you should chat to," Kayla said, getting up. "My cell is in my room," Kayla went off to the room, leaving Rae alone for a moment and when she came back she was already on the phone. "So, can you come here…? Yes, you can bring your daughter… how fast…?" Kayla never finished her last sentence as a portal opened up beside them. "Never mind." Kayla mumbled as Rae's eyes widen as an older version of her came out of the portal, carrying a baby and a diaper bag.
"Thanks Frankie!" The other Rae called into the postal as it closed behind her. "You're lucky I was with Frankie, and he's soften his attitude to the multiverse – especially after Crisis," the other Rae smiled at Kayla as the two hugged.
"Good to see you again and hello to you too Leona," Kayla said to the little baby who gave out a giggle. "And Rae, meet our Rae. Rae, this is New Justice Rae," Kayla introduced the two
"Oh, another little me," New Justice Rae grinned.
"What?" Beautiful Rae said as her alternate sat on the arm of a chair.
"My Splitsville counterpart is about your age. I call her Little Me and she calls me Big Me. Although two Little Mes…. How about Mini Me?" New Justice Rae said with a smile.
"Okay, Big Me," Beautiful Rae stated, but it sounded more sarcastic than the way Splitsville Rae said it.
"So, what do you need?" New Justice Rae asked as she bounce her daughter on her knee.
"Well, our Mini Rae here lost her memories," Kayla said, explaining to New Justice Rae about the Daxamite experiments and how she had no memories of her life before. "It's been Kara's mission to find a passion for Mini Rae here, to give her career options, but so far nothing's working. I thought maybe after several bad attempts, you might have some insight?"
New Justice Rae frowned at fellow Paragon's explanation. "Well, I don't get along with all my alternates," New Justice Rae started slowly. "But there is something we all have in common – two things actually. One is being the Flash, or at least a superhero speedster," Beautiful Rae gave a smile at that, and New Justice Rae smirked. "I don't need to help you there, I see, so let's go to the second thing. Get up, we're cooking."
"Making food?" Beautiful Rae paused as New Justice Rae had stood.
"Yep," New Justice Rae said, and moved over to Kayla. Kayla surprised as New Justice Rae put Leona in her arms and dropped the diaper bag next to her. "Stay with Aunty Kayla. You, up." New Justice Rae pointed at her alternate as she headed for the kitchen, Beautiful Rae paused for a moment, but then followed the older her.
"Don't blow up my house please!" Kayla called out as she looked at the little baby in her arms. "Want to help me choose a new project?" Kayla smiled at the baby as she said this, continuing looking through the papers.

Kara and Barry appeared in front of Kayla's house with Topar at the same time as Caitlin and Daphne came home with Ruby and Marley.
"Hey," Caitlin waved. "What're you doing here?"
"I left Rae with Kayla today," Kara said.
"Oh man, those two together," Caitlin paused.
"I got to see this," Daphne said. Ruby, Marley, and Topar were already running into the house.
"Well, this... smells good," Barry said upon entering, confused as they headed into the living room. Kayla was sitting with a baby on her lap and a ton of food around her. She was eating. Krypto and Roxie were both eating what looked like a steak.
"Hey," Kayla said with a smile as she saw the four of them; Ruby, Marley, and Topar were grabbing some of the food and Ruby jumped up next to Kayla, waving at the baby. Kara even blinked. She hadn't checked Kayla's mind that day, trying to block out her sister to have the time she needed. "The stuffed mushrooms are excellent. Oh, Topar grab the chicken over there. You'll love it." Topar didn't question his aunt as he took some of the chicken.
"This leads to a lot of questions," Caitlin said, looking at her wife. "I am going to go with, where did you get the baby?"
"That would be mine," a familiar voice spoke and they looked up as an older Rae walked into the room, holding a tray. "Mini Me told me there would be some kids coming home at this time. Mozzarella sticks, fried zucchini, onion rings, French fries… basically a bunch of fried things with multiple different sauces."
"I like her," Marley signed to her sister.
"Thank you," Rae signed back after she put the plate down surprising everyone.
"You sign?" Kayla asked.
"I'm the Flash," Rae said. "And I was bored one day."
"Rae?" Barry questioned at the older version of his sister.
"Oh, this is New Justice Rae, the Paragon of Truth," Kayla explained, realizing her Barry hadn't met New Justice Rae yet.
"Most people introduce me as the Flash or Leader of the Justice League, but I guess that's true too," Rae said, pausing at the Paragon reference.
"See I figured an alternate of Rae would be better at getting Rae passionate about something and turns out, Rae's are chefs," Kayla said with a big grin on her face. "Topar, hand me a mozzarella stick?"
"No," Topar said.
"Hey, give your aunt one. There are plenty more cooking in the kitchen," Rae said to the boy, who gave a grin and handed his aunt a mozzarella stick.
"So, Rae likes to cook?" Barry asked..
"Natural," Rae said to the alternate of her cousin.
"And this is your baby?" Daphne said nodding at Leona.
"Yes, mine and Kara's actually," Rae said. "We used a Kryptonian artificial womb."
"Kara, maybe you want to hold her?" Kayla said turning to her sister.
"What?" Kara asked. "Why?"
"A half Kryptonian, and half speedster, why ever would you want to hold that?" Kayla asked sarcastically, giving her sister a smirk.
Shut up! Kara thought to her sister and turned to look at Barry, but Barry still seemed stunned that Rae was a cook to take in what Kayla was saying.
"Can I hold her?" Caitlin asked.
"Of course, any version of Aunty Caity can hold her," Rae said with a smile. "On my Earth, you're technically her pediatrician," Caitlin gave a smile at that as Kayla gave the baby over to her wife.
Caitlin smiled at the baby as she rocked Leona. The little girl didn't seem to mind being passed around and soaking in the attention she was getting.
"Guess holding a baby is like riding a bike," Daphne said to her sister, seeing the smile and turned her head to look at Kayla, but now Kayla seemed to be the oblivious one as she concentrated on Topar, Ruby, Marley, and the food.
"Guess we should look up culinary schools for Rae," Barry said, having grabbed some food himself and seemed impressed. "Where did you go?"
"I didn't," Rae said. "I was too busy being the Flash, a self-taught way of becoming a chef." Barry raised an eyebrow but gave a nod.
But before anyone could say anything else a portal opened up.
"I guess that's my ride," Rae said. "Sorry Aunty Caity, I need my daughter back." Caitlin frowned but kissed the baby's head and handed her back to her mother. "See you soon Paragon of Humanity." Rae gave Kayla a smirk as she grabbed the diaper bag.
"You too Paragon of Truth," Kayla said back. "Wait! She's not going to blow up my house without you, is she?"
"Mini Me? Nope! She's cooking like an old pro," Rae said with a smile, grabbing the diaper bag and heading through the portal.
"Bye," Marley, Ruby, and Topar all waved as the portal closed behind Rae.
"Well Kayla, you had a good idea," Kara said. She hadn't expected leaving Rae with Kayla would solve what Rae wanted to do in the future.
"Don't sound so surprised," Kayla said, causing multiple people to laugh at that.
-Beautiful-
It was after dinner Kara and Barry took Rae and Topar home with Roxy as well. Barry had promised Rae she could cook the meals from now on at home, and experiment however she liked.
"I need to find cookbooks and stuff," Rae pointed out.
"You know my Amazon password," Barry shrugged, closing the door behind him as Kara switched on the lights, the family getting settled in for the night.
"Hey, can you take Topar with you? He needs to do his homework," Kara said to Rae, and Topar groaned.
"Mom, can't I…?" Topar stopped when he saw the look Kara gave him. "Fine." Topar stomped upstairs after Rae, leaving Kara and Barry alone downstairs.
"Barry," Kara said, and could feel Kayla listening in her mind. "The other day when I mentioned this getting Rae some career exploration… well… did you think I was going to bring up the marriage topic again?"
"Part of me did," Barry admitted as he folded his arms now, frowning. "But like I said I am fine at your pace. Whenever you are ready. If your ever ready."
"Yeah," Kara said with a smile. "And I guess we don't have to be married to be parents."
"I think we have been proving that pretty well. We have two kids, counting Rae, and we definitely need to count Rae," Barry chuckled; she might have been a teenager when she came to them, but with no memory at times she was like a little kid finding her way.
"Yes, but I mean…" Kara stumbled as Barry clearly didn't understand what she had meant.
Kara, just say it, Kayla thought to her sister.
"Barry, I'm pregnant," Kara said and Barry paused. "You're going to be a father." Barry stared at Kara for a second before collapsing onto the sofa. "Barry…?"
Okay, point for Mon. He handled the pregnancy reveal a lot better, Kayla thought as Kara groaned at her sister remarks and went to check on her boyfriend. He had fainted.
Post Chapter Note: So, how long into the chapter did you realize Kara's secret? How many of you also agreed with Rae on some of the topics above? Anyway, I hope you enjoyed.
