Chapter One: Between Homes

It was a bright sunny day in the west as the sun started to rise, with only a few clouds in the skies above. And following a trail for a cattle driver were a few cowboys on horse backs. One whistled to the men in the back tending to the dragon herds, "Hyah!"

They each had a smile as they started to sing…

Cowboys: Out in the land

Where the men are tough as cactus

Out in the land where the wild, wild west was won

Not far from the cattle drive, a grey rabbit wearing a red bandana around his neck pulled himself out of his rabbit hole. He had just woken up as he yawned with a stretch. He pulled out a carrot and started chewing the pointy end off. Then he looked to the audience and said with a smile, "Eh, what's up Doc?"

Cowboys: Out in the land of the desperado

If you're soft as an avocado

Yee-haw!

You're guacamole, son

Drops of water started to fall around the rabbit and he held out a hand. When he looked up to the skies he didn't like what he saw. A hungry looking coyote towered over him with its mouth drooling. The coyote tried to snap its jaws at the rabbit, but the rabbit was able to quickly jump out of the way and twice more before taking off. The coyote chased the rabbit towards the cattle drive as the cowboys continued singing…

Cowboys: Oh, home, this ain't it, pal

Home, home, home on the range

Both the rabbit and the coyote tried sliding to a stop when they came too close to a wagon. But only the coyote got out of harm's way as it slid right past. The rabbit turned around on its one foot and peg leg and tried to run, but his ears got stuck in the wheel of the wagon.

Cowboys: Home, home, better go git, pal

You ain't home on the range

The rabbit was pulled into the spinning wheel before being shot into the desert. From the side, the coyote watched as his meal got away before noticing a road runner streaking by. Licking his lips, the coyote gave chase once again. The rabbit cried out in pain when it landed on a few dragon horns before landing in a nest. Baby owls rose out of the nest and started pecking at the rabbit's head and it caused him to cry out in pain as they kept pecking. The rabbit jumped out of the nest and ran off when suddenly the mother owl came flying in and tried to attack him.

Cowboys: Out in the land where the weak are target practice

Out in the land where they shoot the mild and meek

The rabbit and the owl chasing him came by a longhorn skull and the rabbit got an idea. Ducking underneath the owl's talons the rabbit quickly ducked underneath the skull.

Out where the bad are a whole lot badder

If you're the type with a nervous bladder

Yip! Yow! Your saddle's gonna reek

'Cause you ain't home on the range

Home on the Range

When he felt the coast was clear he lifted the skull off of him and tossed it away. But a rattlesnake had been hiding under it as well and had the rabbit's head in his mouth. The rabbit couldn't figure out why it was so dark and scratched his head, even confusing the snake. But when he heard the sound of its rattle the rabbit figured it out and started running with the snake still on his head.

The cowboys continued to lead the cattle drive through the desert as they continued singing…

Cowboys: Cowboy, you're really up a creek

Home, home, home on the range

Home, home, home on the range

Home, home, home on the range

One of the cowboys in the cattle drive looked to the right and saw a familiar face before calling out, "Howdy, sheriff!"

The horse under him snorts in impatience as the sheriff took out a wanted poster, a few nails and a hammer. Placing the poster on the tree next to them, the sheriff started nailing it down. It showed a big, burly man with a reward of big money on his head. When he finished, the sheriff put away his hammer and steered his horse away.

Tsunami: Home on the range. Once upon a time, I had a home on the range. But not anymore. But I'm making the best of it.

Elsewhere, a wagon stopped by the river as his dragons were either waiting to get a move on or was having a little snack for the road. Abner kneeled down to fill his canteen. The Seawing, though she really preferred being around the ocean, didn't mind being in the desert as long as she had a little water.

Tsunami: By the way, the Seawing chewing on the grass, that's me. Name's Tsunami. Even though I could go for a fish or two. And yes, I'm a dragon, see the wings. So get over it.

A fly came buzzing around her, but she quickly used her tail to swat it away. She took another bite of the grass while her human walked back to the wagon.

Tsunami: I'm sort of between homes right now. Me, my human and my friend, we lost our old place…

When Abner whipped the reins, the Seawing stopped eating and started to walk as the Monstrous Nightmare pulled the wagon. Tsunami sighed as she thought about her old place…

Tsunami: And it's all thanks to the meanest bunch of cattle rustlers in the west-

Alameda Slim and Willie Brothers gang.

Tsunami remembered that they came in the night. She thought that she must have blacked out during the whole thing, cause her senses came back when her human came rushing in.

Tsunami: Somehow, they stole the whole herd…

Right out from under our noses…

And then they disappeared without a trace.

When she looked about she saw that all her friends were gone. Her human came walking up and gently petted her head as he was glad that she was safe. But when she looked into his eyes she knew that troubled times were a coming there way.

Tsunami: After that poor old Abner couldn't afford to keep the place…

Or me, either, for that matter.

Well, no matter how bad things could get…

There's probably somebody whose worse off.

The three continued to make their way through the wild west to Tsunami's new home. As they kept walking, the rabbit with the rattlesnake still on his head appeared next to her. She watched as the rabbit screamed and ran with the snake before he ran into a cactus. The impact was enough to knock the snake off, but left the rabbit stuck.

Tsunami: Like that guy for instance.

Tsunami looked at the rabbit with a questioning look before Abner called out from the front, "Hey, Tsunami."

She looked around the wagon as he said, "Take a look at your new home."

Tsunami's face lit up when she saw it. She became even more excited as they came closer.

Tsunami: Hey! A farm?

Now we're talkin'!

Tsunami, Abner and the Monstrous Nightmare continued walking towards the farm. The farm known as Patch of Heaven.

Author's Note: I ended it here cause I wanted to start the chapter with a much cheerier note. Plus, we meet more of the cast in the next chapter. Did you like the line our bunny gave. I look forward to reading your reviews. Be sure to leave a comment either about if I've done something wrong or if you want something specifically to happen. See you next time.
