Chapter Two: Patch of Heaven
The spirit of the farm was a happy one as the day's chores were getting started. The owner of the farm, Pearl, opened the door and she and two dragons walked out. One, a young Rainwing named Kinkajou, and the other, an older Skywing wearing a hat on her head named Kestrel, followed their human onto the farm to get the day started.
K.D. Lang: I know a place
Pretty as pie
Out where the river bend
Hits up with the end of the sky
Pearl and Kestrel headed over to the chicken coop where Pearl picked up a garden hoe before putting it through the strap of a chicken feed bag. When she walked in, Pearl slightly danced to the beat of the day while brining the bag of feed to the chickens. When Pearl turned around, the eggs that the chickens had laid popped out of the nests and fell to the floor. Quickly removing her hat with her tail, Kestrel took it into her mouth and was able to catch all the eggs before they hit the ground. Then one by one they hatched and all the baby chicks looked to Kestrel who smiled.
K.D. Lang: It's left of Nebraska
And over a crest
On a little Patch of Heaven way out west
When they left the chicken coop with the newborn chicks in tow, they got ready for the next chore. Rubbing up on one of the apple trees, Kestrel made the ready fruit start to fall to the ground. Pearl walked right up and held up a basket as a bushel fell. They had a little help from Kinkajou and a gray Triceratops named Topps. Well it was mostly Kinkajou with her horns and tail, since Topps was eating what he could catch.
K.D. Lang: Everything's green
Know what I mean?
Darlin', it's quite the sweetest sight
That you ever done seen
Pearl turned when Kinkajou tossed what she had to her and the apples piled into the bucket with the others. Kestrel had stepped on a corn stalk before releasing it. A few ears of corn were sent flying through the air before a black duck named Daffy held a bucket for them. The duck was able to catch most of them, but one stray ear of corn knocked into him and he fell onto his back. The duck lied there for a moment while his leg twitched.
K.D. Lang: Ain't nothin' much out there
Just life at its best
On a little Patch of Heaven way out west
A swarm of bees flew through the air with smiles while Kinkajou watched on with a smile of her own. When a few flew close to her head she ducked down. The swarm disappeared into the sky as the Rainwing lowered her head to some flowers and took a sniff. She let out a sigh of relief before letting out a sneeze. Kinkajou moved out of a way when a couple of tumbleweeds came her way.
K.D. Lang: Bees by the dozen
Are buzzin' real peaceful
Every bluebonnet, doggone it, smells nice
Even the tumblin' tumbleweed
Slows down to match your speed
Pearl filled a trough with some slope for the pigs. Three young piglets ran up to join in, but it proved a little difficult. They jumped up and down before getting up there and digging in. At the barn, Kestrel was putting together the produce for the market as she finished when she pushed the last crate in place. The chicken's started to square dancing while Pearl, Kestrel and Kinkajou walked through the farm grounds as the morning express went by on the tracks.
K.D. Lang: On my tiny half an acre of paradise
Darlin', I swear
Once you been there
There ain't a view beneath the blue
That could ever compare
Soon even all the animals and Pearl started square dancing to the beat. But as Daffy started dancing, a piglet and a chicken looked to him with odd looks. Pearl started to finish the chores by taking a pitchfork and tossing a bundle of hay to the dragon's feeding trough. Kestrel looked up to the pile of hay on her hat when the baby chicks appeared. Even Pearl was surprised, but then smiled at the moment while three chicks played on the pitchfork. The baby chicks on Kestrel's head soon got off as the two watched their human walk off to do other farm things. When she had walked off, one of the baby chicks climbed up to the chimney before letting out a full-grown rooster crow. The crow was so loud that it caused his father the rooster to fall off the roof and woke him as he fell to the ground.
K.D. Lang: The only thing missing
Is you as my guest
On a little Patch of Heaven way out west
Why don't you come visit
There's room in the nest
On that little Patch of Heaven
Way out we-e-e-e-e-e-e-est
The other animals watched as the rooster fell to the ground. Foghorn tumbled across the ground before barreling into the dragon's trough. Foghorn turned to the girls and said with a chuckle as he pointed, "Hey, that's my boy."
"Can hog! Can hog!" They heard the piglets shouting across the yard. Kestrel, Kinkajou and Foghorn looked to see the piglets yelling at Topps as the Triceratops was sitting in his barrel. Topps looked at the three with a slight glare and said, "Don't yell at me."
"Oh. The call of duty." Kestrel said as she recognized the situation. Turning to the younger dragon she suggested, "Why don't you handle this one, Kinkajou?" Kinkajou continued eating as Kestrel said, "It's about time that I gave you some more responsibility on the farm."
Somehow, Kinkajou had turned the hay into a bubble like one can do with gum. It gave a loud pop and Kinkajou turned to Kestrel and asked, "Really?"
Kinkajou walked around Kestrel while saying, "Thanks, K. I'll make you proud."
The Rainwing continued walking over to Topps' barrel to quell the confrontation. All three piglets glared as they continued to shout, "Can hog! Can hog!"
"Get off my case, ya little cocktail wieners!" Topps shouted in annoyance. Kinkajou walked over while saying, "Whoa, whoa!" With a slight shake of her head she said, "I'm sensing a lot of negative energy here."
"That's our can," One of the piglets said while pointing at the Triceratops, "and Topps took it."
"And now he says it's his can." The piglet next to him said. Kinkajou moved between them as she said, "Now, let's not play the shame and blame game." The three blew raspberries at Topps. Then she added, "This is an organic problem, and there's a holistic solution."
The four smaller animals looked to her with slight confusion before Topps said with a shake of his head, "You don't get this whole farm concept, do you, sister?"
The piglets looked about before the one in the middle made a decision and shouted, "Kill the Triceratops!"
All three piglets leapt at the Triceratops while yelling at the top of their little lungs. One jumped on his snout between his horns and another landed on top of the first while the third came up and bit the horn on his nose. They all started to fight as they were somehow able to pull the bigger animal out. One piglet was able to jump on the Triceratops' belly and it made him loose his grip on the can. But the piglet and the goat all made a grab for it as went higher into the air. The fighting stopped when a red tail caught the can and a voice said, "Ahem."
"We're sorry, Kestrel." One of the piglets said as they all stopped fighting. Holding the can away from all of them, she then asked, "Piggies, why can't you leave Topps alone?"
"Yeah!" Topps said with a sharp nod as they walked away, "Why can't you?"
"The poor old dinosaur needs peace and quiet." She added. Topps went back into his barrel as he said, "That's right! I need it!"
"So, run long," Kestrel said before flicking the can away, "and take your can with you."
The three piglets ran after the can with joy. Even Topps agreed as he said, "Yeah, you take that can and-" Realizing what had happened he shouted, "Hey! Whoa! Come back here, you little bacon bits!"
"Topps." Kestrel said, getting his attention. Then she asked him, "Don't you have enough cans of your own?"
"Uh, no," Topps said as he sat back down. Kestrel gave a skeptical look at the mountain of cans next to his barrel as he added, "not really."
Over at the farms gate, Pearl was talking with Abner. She had a smile on her face as she said, "I'd be happy to take her in, Abner." Her smile grew broader as she stated, "There's always room for one more."
Tsunami smiled at the news while Abner shook Pearl's hand. Even though he was sad to see her go, Abner was happy and said, "Well, thanks, Pearl." He put his hat back on as he said, "I gotta warn you, though. She's- heh, heh- she's a bit headstrong."
As he took off the rope around Tsunami's neck, Audrey the chicken came walking up to the fence as Pearl said, "Oh, now, don't you worry, Abner." Pearl gently rubbed the top of Tsunami's head, which the Seawing didn't mind as her new human said, "I'm sure that she'll fight right in."
"So long, Pearl." Abner said as he waved her off while getting back into his wagon. Then looking between her and Tsunami he said, "You take care, now."
Audrey started to run to the others and frantically shouted, "Kestrel! Oh! Kestrel! Kes-" She took a deep breath as Kestrel and Kinkajou looked to the chicken, "Kestrel, there's a newcomer at the gate."
"Not now, Audrey." Kestrel said, not really in the mood. Audrey then tried to explain, "But it's a Sea-"
"Everybody?" Pearl called out. All the animals looked to her as she gestured to the gate, "This here is Tsunami the Seawing."
A rock and roll theme played as Tsunami came skidding to a halt at the gate. She looked to the animals of Patch of Heaven and gave them a wink and a smile. Three chickens looked at her and thought that she was cool while an egg plopped out. Kestrel's eyes widened as the other animals looked at Tsunami, "The three-time winner of the Golden Dragon Award…" Tsunami moved through the gates as they slightly closed and had to squeeze through as Pearl added, "And the original Miss Happy Dragoness."
Kinkajou and Kestrel's eyes widened at Tsunami before the former looked to the latter. Kestrel could barely believe it as she said, "A show dragon? On Patch of Heaven?"
Tsunami crossed a little bridge and made it dunk a small turtle that was swimming in the trench. The turtle came back up with a gasp for air. Tsunami continued to walk across the grounds of Patch of Heaven. Her stomping around caused two baby chicks to quickly run to an egg shell and used it to hide. Tsunami stopped just a few feet from the other animals as she nervously looked around before putting on a big smile. Pearl then said, "Now, I want y'all to make her feel right at home." She walked off to the garden while adding, "You hear me?"
"Hey, thanks, everybody." Tsunami said as she came closer to the gang. She looked between the animals and said, "It's really great to be here in Patch of Heaven." Then she said, "Now, don't everybody speak up at one time."
None of them said anything as they had mixed expressions on their faces as she joked, "What is this, the frozen food section?" Tsunami chuckled to this, but noticed that they weren't laughing and asked, "I guess you've heard that one, huh?"
Kestrel cleared her throat before wishing Tsunami, "Good morning, Tsunami." She tried to be nice as she said, "What a wonderful surprise…" The Skywing made it sound happy when she said, "to find a fellow dragon joining the ranks."
Topps gave a mocking cough while adding, "Phony."
He continued to fake cough when Kestrel took a rock and stuck it over the Triceratops' mouth. The two current residential dragons then introduced themselves, "I'm Kestrel."
"Hi." Kinkajou said with a wave of her talons. Then the Skywing gestured to the Rainwing and said, "And this is Kinkajou."
"Hi." Kinkajou said again with another wave of her talons. Kestrel then lowered her paw down to the ground before turning her attention back to Tsunami. She then said, "No applause and trophies here, I'm afraid. Just the fruits of our good, honest labor."
"Hi." Kinkajou said for a third time. Tsunami laughed as she said, "Workin' stiffs, huh?" Then she looked up as she reminisced, "Boy, do I remember those days."
Kestrel slightly shook her head before putting her smile back on. One of the piglets came over and said, "Wow! You're the biggest Seawing I have ever saw." Tsunami turned to the little animal as he added, "Not to mention the only Seawing I've ever seen."
"Well, if you're in charge, I'll take that as a compliment." Tsunami said. The little pig started to look a little nervous. The Seawing had a smirk as she warned, "And if you're not…" She turned around to where her backside faced him and said, "I guess I'll just have to sit on you."
"Mom!" The piglet shouted and started to run. But Tsunami was quick to catch him with her talons and reassured him with a smile, "Hey, I'm only kidding!" Though the piglet was unsure, Tsunami then moved her tail to the young one's ear as she said, "Say, what's this that you've got jammed up in your little ear?"
Like a magician she had made an apple appear from the little piglet's ear. The piglet was amazed and said, "Whoa!"
Setting him down, Tsunami tossed the apple with her tail before offering it, "Here, have an apple, kid." She popped into his mouth and turned away while adding, "Just don't go near any luaus, though."
The piglet gave a muffled thanks as she walked away. Then Tsunami stopped and said, "Wait a minute." Then using her tail on her own ear she said, "I got somethin' stuck in my ear, now."
The three piglets came around to see what it was this time. She pulled out an ear of corn before tossing it up into the ear. When it came down she used her wing to send it back up while saying, "This one's all for me."
Then opening her mouth, she let the ear of corn fall right into her mouth. When she finished eating it, Tsunami let out a belch before saying, "Ahh! That was good."
"Awesome!" All three piglets said. Then hopping up and down they requested, "Do it again! Do it again!" Then running over to one of the crates of produce they tossed her some veggies as they shouted, "Come on, come on! Do it again! Do it again!"
They tossed her a head of lettuce, an ear of corn, and a tomato. She let the vegetables slide down her back before holding them in a stack on her tail. One of the piglets said, "Oh! That's so cool!"
Then with a light toss, the vegetables disappeared into Tsunami's mouth. Over with the other two dragons, Kinkajou said to Kestrel, "Tsunami's some fun, isn't she?"
"Uh." Kestrel said with an eye roll. Then she complained, "Teaching pigs to throw food. As if they weren't sloppy enough."
The piglets continued to toss pieces of food to Tsunami as she continued to do tricks before eating them. One of the piglets tossed an ear of corn and it flew towards the chimney of Pearl's house. Tsunami ran after it and shouted, "I'm goin' long!"
She was able to run up the chimney before catching the ear of corn in her mouth and eating it on the way down. Topps had come running up when he had seen the can and had a look of happiness on his face. But as he reached to take it, he was flattened underneath Tsunami when she landed. The piglets let out a round of laughter as Tsunami let loose another belch. All three piglets followed her example and started burping. Kestrel looked between the three as they continued to let loose their belches.
Quickly running through the desert, the sheriff had his Horse going at high speeds to make it. When they were close enough, the sheriff tried to get his ride to slow down and shouted, "Whoa! Whoa!" When the Horse didn't slow down, the sheriff shouted, "Dagnabit, Spirit, slow down!"
But Spirit didn't as he kept going and jumped over a fallen tree. The two kept making their way to their destination.
Back at the farm, Tsunami used her tail to grab one of Topps' cans and asked, "Ok, who's up for a game of tin-can tag?"
"Hey!" Topps shouted after them. Then he so obviously lied, "That can there is a family heirloom."
But the four didn't listen as Tsunami said, "Whoever wins is gonna get a free tetanus shot! Ok?"
Kestrel and Kinkajou both walked over to keep an on them. But as Tsunami held the can perfectly balanced on her tail, something came jumping over the fence and knocked the can into the air. They all watched as the sheriff on his Horse as Spirit arrogantly said, "Superstar comin' through!"
The tin can soars through the air before hitting the windmill. All three piglets stood on their hindlegs, lifted their front hooves into the air and shouted, "Awesome!"
"No autographs, please." Spirit said like a hotshot. Topps said from the side, "I got your autograph, pal!" The can fell onto his head and the Triceratops cried out, "Ow!"
"Who's the hotshot?" Tsunami asked, not really liking his attitude and whatnot. One of the pigs said, "Oh, it's Spirit."
"Puh! City slicker." Kestrel said with a roll of her eyes. Spirit kept running through the farm grounds and the sheriff shouted, "Oh! Whoa! Whoa! Dagnabit, Spirit!"
The Horse came sliding to a stop behind Pearl as she gathered carrots from the garden. Pearl looked a bit surprised when she turned to them. The sheriff then scolded, "Take it easy. This ain't no rodeo."
Spirit just rolled his eyes. Pearl chuckled before saying, "Why, good morning, Sam." She placed a hand on her hip and asked, "Is that ornery horse gettin' away from you again?"
"Oh, uh, howdy, Pearl." Sam said before dusting himself off. Then reaching into his pocket he said, "I came to bring you another bank notice."
Pearl sighed as she had been receiving these for a while. Though he assured her, Sam didn't look to happy as he told her, "This one'll be the last."
"You know, every time I get a weak harvest…" Pearl said with a shake of her head. She pulled up another carrot as she said, "they send me one of these here notices." The three dragons walked into the garden as Pearl told him, "They'll get their money soon enough."
"It's a whole new shootin' match now, Pearl." Sam said as the other animals came around. They all looked worried as Sam said, "The bank's callin' in everybody's debt."
He sounded angry when he added, "They're losin' money somethin' fierce with all the dragon-men goin' under."
Even Tsunami wasn't liking the sound of this. Sam then warned, "I'm tellin' you, if they don't get their money in three days…" Pearl took the envelope as he said, "they're gonna auction off Patch of Heaven."
"What?" Pearl questioned, not believing what she was hearing. All the dragons looked really worried as Kestrel shook her head, "No."
"But… they can't take my place." Pearl protested. Then she stated, "Why, I've been here through many twisters, blizzards." With a shake of her head she said, "Sam, uh… Sam, this is my home."
Sam removed his hat and he genuinely said, "I'm sorry, Pearl. I'm truly sorry."
"Yeah, well…" Pearl said with a sigh. She sounded truly sad as she hugged the notice and said, "I'm afraid "sorry" just ain't gonna save my farm."
With a slight flick of the reins, Sam got Spirit moving to the gate as he put his hat back on. Kestrel glared as she sarcastically said, "Well, Spirit, I hope you're proud of yourself."
"As a matter of fact, I am." Spirit said with a nod. Then he added, "Thank you for checking."
Pearl looked at the bank notice, and felt as if she were in a rough spot. But before he left, Sam stopped Spirit and suggested to Pearl, "You know, Pearl, it don't have to be this way." Then gesturing to the animals she said, "You've got the best livestock in the county."
What he said got to Tsunami as she thought about it. Sam then said, "All you gotta do…" He didn't like the sound of it, but still said, "Is just ell off a few of these critters-"
"Stop it right there, Sam." Pearl interrupted with a wave of her hand. Gesturing to the farm animals she said, "They're family." With a shake of her head she said, "And you don't sell family."
Knowing that he might have rubbed her the wrong way, Sam tried to calm thing, "Ho-ho-hold your horses, Pearl."
Even Spirit was a little nervous as the angry woman came closer with a garden hoe. Then she said, "Now you get gone, before I start using words…" She readied the garden tool to hit him, "No good woman should ever use."
"Don't bust your gusset, woman!" Sam cried out in fear as Spirit backed up when she made a swing. Pearl then ordered, "Go on, Sam!"
As Spirit started to run off, Pearl stood strong as she stated, "It is still my property! Now get!" She said it once more, "I said, get!"
"I was just tryin' to help!" Sam said as Spirit ran across the country again. Pearl sighed as she calmed herself.
