Chapter 10

Ayron was up with the sun the next morning. He had a fire blazing before his companions were awake. The prince and the guards stirred first.

"Good morning to you all," he said cheerfully. "I trust everyone slept well?"

Someone grumbled something unintelligible, and it sounded suspiciously like "Not well enough." Ayron chose to ignore that remark, just in case it was directed at him.

They had been riding in the woods for some time when Ayron began to feel uncomfortable. It was a feeling he'd had several times before. It was the feeling of being watched, and he could tell that it wasn't just him who felt that way.

The guards looked at each other nervously; the prince and princess were visibly uneasy.

There was that unmistakable feeling in the air. Someone was following them. Lilliana was nervous, and the others clearly were as well. She couldn't tell if Ranger was, but he seemed more watchful, more cautious, than before.

It is nice that Ranger decided to come with us, she thought. If anything should happen in these woods that we don't know how to deal with, he certainly will.

"Be watchful," he whispered, startling Lilliana out of her wandering thoughts.

"Who do you think it is?" Her brother questioned, subtly glancing over his shoulder.

"It could be a traveler, your Highness, but I think not." That was an unnerving answer. What could he mean? Who did he think was following them, and why? Looking at Lilliana he said: "It could be those men who ambushed you."

Lilliana gasped. The thought was enough to chill her blood, and, involuntarily, she shivered. Reuel came closer and wrapped an arm around his sister.

"What makes you think that?"

"I feel that this is no traveler following us."

"We must be wary then," Reuel stated.

Ranger nodded, then he continued ahead on the road.

They were not accosted during the rest of their time on the road and soon reached Cair Paravel in safety. The King and Queen were curious to meet Ranger and invited him to stay within the castle awhile. It was well that he accepted their offer.

A/N: I'm getting tired of using this horizontal line to separate sections in my story, but anything else I try doesn't get saved when I try to edit my doc. If you know of anything that does work let me know. I would really appreciate it!
