Chapter 18: Mother's Day!
"Happy Mother's Day!" A younger Misaki shouted along with her father. In front of the two was a woman who looked like an older version of Misaki.
The mother brushed her lilac hair out of her tired eyes. A warm smile grew on her lips as she took in the faces of her family. "Thank you."
Misaki joyfully climbed onto her parents' bed, crawling onto her mother's lap. "You don't have to do anything today, Mommy! Daddy and I are gonna take care of all the chores today!"
"Really, now?" Her mother responded playfully. Misaki nodded her head enthusiastically, bouncing in her mother's lap.
"Today is your day, so just sit back and relax. Your wonderful husband has breakfast covered too!" Her father walked forward with a tray of food. Misaki carefully rolled off of mother's lap, so that her dad could place the tray down.
The lilac mother took in the aroma of the breakfast in her lap. "Smells delicious," She said.
"I helped, Mommy!" Misaki chirped from beside her. Her mother ruffled her hair softly, giggling.
"Thank you, sweetheart," She said as she placed a soft kiss on Misaki's forehead.
"I don't get a kiss?" Her father pouted.
"Later," Her mother winked, which excited her father very much. Misaki simply tilted her head, confused by her parents' actions. The little lilac carefully shifted herself next to her mother as the woman gracefully ate her breakfast. Her dad left the room to fix up their plates of food.
"Hey, Mommy?"
"Yes, Misaki?"
"What is it like?" Misaki asked.
The mother raised an eyebrow. "What's what like?"
"Being a mommy. What is it like?" Misaki's teal orbs stared into her mother's equally teal eyes.
The mother paused in her eating, placing her chopsticks down. She placed a finger to her chin as she thought of how to reply. "I don't think I can answer that question for you."
Misaki sat up instantly, shocked by her mother's refusal to answer. "What!? Why!?"
"Because you'll learn the answer to it once you become a mother, Misaki. If I told you now then it'd be a spoiler," Her mother responded.
"Once I become a mommy?"
"Yes."
"When will that be?"
"Hopefully when you're old enough."
"Like, 17?"
Misaki's mother blanched at the age that she spouted out. "Hopefully older…"
Before Misaki could ask why, her father reentered the room with another tray full of food. "Breakfast is served, Misaki! Let's enjoy eating with our special lady of the day!"
"Yay!" Misaki cheered.
The mother shook her head at the two, loving their boundless energy. She leaned back in her bed watching the two interact before settling her eyes onto her daughter. "You'll make an excellent mother, Misaki. But for now, just stay as my adorable little girl."
Teal eyes shot open instantly, Misaki sat up in her bed. She scanned around her bedroom wondering if she was still dreaming before realizing that she wasn't. Misaki shook her head to rid herself of the sleepiness that plagued her. "It's been a while since I dreamed of mom and dad," Misaki said to herself. She had long since moved past their deaths, but that didn't mean she doesn't still think or dream of them.
Especially when it came to Tsukki. Oh, she really wishes they could've met Tsukki.
Looking to her right, Misaki found her husband's side of the bed to be empty. It wasn't abnormal for Kai to wake up earlier than her to start up breakfast while she woke Tsukki up for school. Carefully getting up from her bed, Misaki grabbed her robe from the rack next to the bed. Wrapping it around her body, Misaki slipped on her slippers and stepped out of her room. Immediately the delicious smell of her husband's cooking entered her nostrils. Though she was slightly confused as to why she couldn't hear her daughter or husband. Walking down the steps to the lower level of the home, Misaki entered the darkened kitchen.
FLASH!
Misaki flinched from the sudden illumination of the kitchen, blinking a couple of times to adjust to the newfound light; Misaki took in the sight in front of her.
Both Tsukki and Kai could be found standing in front of the table, their arms outstretched to greet her. Both had small smiles on their faces and opened their mouths. "Happy Mother's Day!"
"Ah…that makes sense. No wonder I had that dream," Misaki smiled softly, placing a hand to her chest. The lilac mother walked up to her family, she picked up Tsukki, and wrapped an arm around Kai. "Thank you."
"Of course. Today's your day, Misaki," Kai smiled.
"It's no problem, Mama," Tsukki said.
Misaki placed a soft kiss on Tsukki's forehead, causing a massive blush to appear on Tsukki's face. "M-Mama..!"
"My special little girl. I love you," Misaki said softly, placing another kiss on Tsukki's forehead.
Kai raised an eyebrow. "What about my kiss?"
"Later," Misaki smiled seductively. Which made the Kagero user very excited.
Tsukki just stared at her parents in disgust. "Gross. Go do grown up stuff later!"
Both parents simply rolled their eyes at their daughter, though they agreed that there was plenty of time for their love later. Misaki placed Tsukki back onto the floor, keeping her eyes on Kai. "So, I'm guessing you two made me breakfast?"
"A very special Mother's Day breakfast," Kai responded, carefully guiding his wife to her seat. Misaki waited for her family to take their seats before getting started on their breakfast.
"Happy Mother's Day!" Shin exclaimed as he entered the Toshiki-Tokura household.
"Quiet, Uncle Shin! You're too loud!" Tsukki instantly berated the man.
"Ack! Tsukki, your harsh words cause me pain!" Shin clutched his chest.
"No, she's right. Quiet down when you enter our home," Kai added.
"K-Kai…!" Shin clutched his chest even harder. He glanced over to his niece, hoping for her support. "M-Misaki…!"
"Quit being overly dramatic. It's embarrassing," Misaki sighed.
"GAH!" Shin collapsed to the floor, down for the count.
Tsukki walked over to his body and started poking it with the broom. "Can we toss his body outside?"
Misaki got up from her seat in the living room, softly pushing Tsukki away. "No. Go help your father clean up." Looking down at her uncle with exasperation. "Get off the floor, Uncle."
Laughing to himself, Shin quickly climbed to his feet. The man wasted no time in wrapping his arms around Misaki. "Happy Mother's Day, Misaki!"
The lilac mother returned the hug. "Thanks, Uncle."
Shin lifted up the bag in his hand. "I got you something as a gift. I think you'd like it."
"Alright, but it better not be some embarrassing photo," Misaki warned as the two sat down in the living room. Misaki opened up the bag to find a small box inside. She took it out of the bag and gasped at the name engraved onto it.
"...My mother's…?" She glanced at Shin.
"Open it," He said gently.
Misaki opened up the box to find a silver locket inside, carefully lifting it into the air. Misaki unlatched the locket to reveal what was inside.
It was a picture of both her parents. The right side of the locket had an image of just them, while the left side had a picture of her parents holding an infant version of her.
Before she even realized it tears were streaming down her cheeks. Misaki closed the locket, holding it close to her heart.
"Sorry, it took me so long to give it to you. The locket was horribly ruined from the car accident and I wasn't really sure what to do with it at first. I wanted to wait until your 18th birthday to give it to you. But then Tsukki was born and I figured that I might as well get it fixed now. But due to how badly it was damaged and how long it had been left alone the process took some years. There was also the cost to get it fixed and well…"
Shin was cut off by Misaki wrapping her arms tightly around him. "Thank you…!"
Suddenly Shin found his own tears threatening to run down his face, returning his niece's hug. "It was my pleasure. She'd be proud of you, Misaki. Both of them would."
Misaki has heard him say that to her for years, especially after Tsukki was born. But every time Shin spoke those words it made her heart flutter with happiness.
"Mother…"
Both niece and uncle broke their hug to see Tsukki standing shyly in the doorway of the living room, Kai right behind her. The father gently nudged the girl forward, she stumbled slightly and glared up at her father. Tsukki stepped up to her mother with something hidden behind her back.
"Here, Mother. I hope you love it," Misaki handed a small, wrapped box to Misaki.
The older lilac carefully took the present from her daughter, unwrapping it with care. Misaki opened up the box and she almost started crying once more.
Inside of the box was a Vanguard card, however it was a custom made card of the Goddess of the Full Moon, Tsukuyomi. The unit in the card was designed to look exactly like her mother instead of the usual Tsukuyomi.
"You said that your Tsukuyomi deck used to belong to grandmother. So, father and I decided to have it custom made just for you. We took a picture of grandmother as a template for it. I hope you like it," Tsukki explained.
Misaki stared at the card, brushing her fingers against it before staring down at her daughter. Suddenly certain words flooded back into her mind.
"Because you'll learn the answer to it once you become a mother, Misaki."
Misaki picked up her daughter as tears ran down her cheeks once more. "I love it, Tsukki. Thank you so much."
Tsukki returned her mother's embrace. "I love you, Mama."
"I love you too."
"I think I understand now, Mother. The love of my family has given me my answer. I hope you and father are watching us. And I hope you're watching over Tsukki whenever Kai and I are unable to."
"Happy Mother's Day," Misaki whispered softly.
Chapter End
NOTE: Before you ask why I didn't mention Kai's mother at all. In the context of my story, I'm using the backstory that Kai was still abandoned by his parents. So, he doesn't want to celebrate them at all.
Kourin is still pregnant, so no Mother's Day for her until that baby gets born.
Again, sorry that this took so long.
Have a great day!
