Chapter 2: First Encounter
(Time Skip, two years later)
Percy was standing in a forest clearing. He had grown taller over the last two years. His skin was now more tanned than before, and he was also more muscular. He had a black tattoo like his father on his right torso, and his hair was now just like Ignia's human form, only black instead of dark orange. He had long black pants that stopped just before steel-toed boots. On his torso, he had a red, sleeveless t-shirt. Percy had asked his father where he got these clothes; however, Ignia had dodged the question. Percy had a backpack with a large tarp, a canteen to hold water, and string to tie the tarp up.
"So," Percy flexed a bit. "Dad dropped me off in this forest without knowing how to get back to the mountain." Percy looked at his fist. "Told me I have to survive in this forest for three days." Percy looked around. "Dad really loves the concept of 'Tough Love' but." Percy clenched his fist. "I'll prove I'm not weak." Percy turned to walk in a new direction when the smell of dog and fire hit his nose. "What the?" Percy turned to see a pitch-black wolf; its eyes were blood red, with slit pupils. The wolf snarled and exhaled pitch-black smoke from its mouth. Then it looked at Percy and growled. "A hellhound?" Percy stepped back a bit. "But how? They are supposed to be the guardians of the underworld. How did it-?" Percy shook his head. "No, it doesn't matter, it's here, and it's clearly looking for me." Percy planted his feet and glared at the monster. Percy charged forward, his fist igniting. The hellhound lept forward. The world slowed down around Percy as he watched the hellhound close the distance. Percy rolled out of the way as the hellhound lunged, slicing the air where Percy had been moments before. "This thing is fast!" Percy charged in again, and the hell hound charged again, claws extended. Once again, the world slowed down, and Percy dropped to his knees, sliding under the hellhound and; as the monster passed over Percy, he uppercut it. "Fire Dragon: IRON FIST!" The hellhound shot into the sky; Percy charged as the hellhound fell to the ground, jumping into the air, his left leg igniting. "Fire Dragon: Claw!" Percy's flaming leg collided with the hellhound's skull, fracturing it, then slamming the hellhound's head into the ground. Percy jumped back, planted his feet, and inhaled deeply. "Fire Dragon: ROAR!" Unlike the last time Percy had tried the spell, the jet of flame burst to life, tearing forward, consuming everything in his path. The hellhound was engulfed in flames, not even having time to react before being reduced to ashes. Percy exhaled, steam spilling from his mouth as he looked at the burned forest around him. "Oops," Percy rubbed the back of his head. "Looks like I overdid it again." Percy started walking towards the setting sun. "West, that's where the sun goes when it sets; that's what dad said." Percy looked around, sniffing the air trying to see if there was anything that could threaten him.
(Time Skip six hours later)
Percy had been walking, following the setting sun for hours now, and stumbled across a river.
"Good, Dad always said, 'If you get lost in the woods, find a source of running water.'" Percy sat, looking around to ensure he wasn't being followed or watched. Percy then pulled out the tarp and string and set up his campsite. Percy then pulled out a fishing string and a small hook, found a stick, and set the line. One hour later, Percy, having a difficult time sitting still, had yet to catch any fish. Percy packed up the fishing line, started sniffing the air, and soon caught the scent of a deer. "That will work." Percy got to his feet and started walking through the woods, following the smell, and soon came across a grazing doe. "I've only got one chance to make this work," Percy crouched as slowly as he could. "Close the distance with my fire, but it has to be a quick burst." Percy watched as the doe lowered its head again to eat more grass. "NOW!" Percy pushed off the ground, unleashing a small burst of flame, enough to latch on the doe's back. Percy wrapped his arms around the doe's neck and broke it with one fluid motion, killing the doe instantly. Percy shouldered the doe's corpse, carried it back to his campsite, and started the gruesome cooking process.
(Time skip, two hours later)
Percy was sitting on the ground, the remains of the doe now ash, as Ignia warned him. If Percy made anything, make sure nothing remained, as it could attract bears or other dangerous creatures. Percy looked up at the stars above him with a content smile. Percy felt his eyes drooping, and so he crawled to his tent, laying down on the makeshift bed he'd created, and soon fell asleep.
(Time skip three days later)
Percy was leaping through the forest, his eyes scanning the ground below him. Percy heard the sound of flapping wings and turned his head to see a flock of Stymphalian Birds following him. Percy had stumbled across them an hour ago; as a group, they tried to attack him, so Percy, not wanting to set the forest on fire, had to flee.
"Stupid Birds!" Percy shouted, "Will you leave me alone already!" Eventually, Percy saw the telltale sign of the forest thinning, indicating he was getting near a clearing. "Yes." Percy stared leeping faster to reach the clearing. Percy shot into the clearing with one final jump, landing on the ground, shifting his weight to turn to face the Stymphalian Birds. The birds circled above Percy, forming a solid cloud, ready to attack. Percy inhaled, summoning his magic power. "FIRE DRAGON!"
"ROAR!" An eruption of flame the size of a mini sun slammed into the birds, reducing them to ashes in a second. Percy turned to see his father floating in the air, arms crossed, looking down with an amused look on his face. "Really, Percy? I leave you alone for three days, and this is the trouble you get into?"
"I could have handled it."
"You call running from weak monsters like Stymphalian Birds 'handling it.' Amusing."
"I wasn't running. I was luring them; I didn't want to set the forest on fire." Ignia raised an eyebrow.
"So screaming 'will you leave me alone already!' was part of luring them?"
"I had to give them a reason to chase." Percy crossed his arms, glaring at the fire dragon. "Stupid old man." Percy and Ignia glared at each other for a solid ten seconds. Then they busted out laughing at each other. Eventually, the father and son duo stopped laughing and looked at each other again.
"Well, Let's get you back to the cave," Ignia sniffed the air and gagged a bit. "And you're taking a bath."
"Okay, dad." Ignia landed on the ground, and Percy climbed on Ignia's back, who took to the skies, taking them both back home. When they got back, Percy walked over to where he had dug the hole to clean himself off. Ignia walked back towards the entrance of the cave.
"Percy," Ignia spoke, gaining the demigod's attention. "I'm going to be heading off for a few hours. But, I don't want you leaving the cave until I return, understand?"
"Okay, dad, I'll do my reading." Ignia smiled.
"Good boy." Ignia walked back out to the cliff and took to the skies again. Ignia, no longer worrying about Percy falling off or Zeus blasting him out of the sky, climbed above the clouds and soared off towards the south. Ignia saw a few planes off in the distance but ignored them for the most part. A few minutes of flying later, Ignia started descending to reach his destination. Ignia saw the large clearing off Long Island Sound and smiled. Ignia went to land in the clearing, only to slam into a solid wall of air. "What the hell?" Ignia tried to land again, only to meet with heavy resistance again.
"Heroes to Arms!" Ignia heard a rallying cry and saw many Demigods in armor forming ranks. Then, not a second later, Ignia heard the whistle of arrows flying at him. Ignia flapped his wings, the wind blowing the arrows off course.
"Stand down." A bored voice spoke, and Ignia saw Dionysus walking out of the largest house, followed by Chiron. "I, Dionysus, God of Wine, permit you entrance into the camp." Thunder boomed, and the wall of resistance faded instantly. Ignia landed in a clearing, free of demigods and other objects.
"Everyone, back to your activities," Chiron commanded; many of the campers dispersed, but the ones with red spears didn't move.
"It could be a messenger from our father." The largest girl spoke, "Dragons are the Sacred Animal of Ares."
"I am not here from Ares, girl," Ignia spoke. "So I would do as Chiron commands."
"But."
"It's alright," Chiron replied, "I know this dragon." The kids with red spears walked away, and the centaur turned to Ignia. "So, what brings you to Camp Halfblood, Ignia?"
"I don't suppose Zeus sent you to burn this place to the ground," Dionysus spoke, Chiron's face paled, and Ignia snorted.
"If I was here to destroy this place," Ignia smiled darkly. "I would have done so already." Ignia shifted into his human form again. "No, I'm here because I need to speak with the two of you in private." Chiron and Dionysus looked at each other, clearly nervous.
"Then follow me." Chiron spoke, and the group of three walked towards the big house and soon sat down. "So, what did you want, Ignia?"
"It's about a boy I'm raising." Chiron and Dionysus' eyes widened.
"You mean he's a." Chiron started.
"Yes, A Fire Dragon Slayer, but the boy is also a demigod." Ignia sighed a bit. "In three months, I'll be sending him here to camp, but I want to make this clear, you won't be seeing me for a very long time."
"Why?" Dionysus asked. "Has something happened?"
"It is to prevent Percy from turning into a dragon, just like Him."
"Who are you talking about?" Chiron asked.
"Acnologia." Ignia's face darkened. "Long before Olympus, before the Titans or even the Primordials, we dragons were at the top. Many dragons viewed Humanity as food, while few sought coexistence. Acnologia was a human who learned Dragon Slayer Magic. However, humans who learn this magic inevitably transform into a dragon. For reasons I still don't know, he declared he would make the dragons go extinct. He slaughtered us, and we were all but powerless to stop him. He got to the point where only a few of us remained. Selene, Mercphobia, Viernes, Aldrin, Dogramag, and I fled for our lives. Over time, our power grew, and we soon eclipsed that of the self-proclaimed 'Dragon King.' Over these last few years, I have come to view Percy as my own flesh and blood and would do anything to protect him. To protect him, I must use an ancient magic spell to prevent the Dragon Seed in his heart from growing."
"I see," Chiron stroked his beard, "Where is it you two live? We'll send a Saytr Protector."
"In the mountains near Lake Ontario, far from any civilization." Ignia got back to his feet. "I'll be returning home; I don't like the idea of leaving Percy unattended for too long." Ignia walked out of the big house, returned to his dragon form, and took to the skies, returning home. When Ignia arrived home, he saw Percy doing one-armed push-ups, a rock strapped to his back, while he was reading one of the books Ignia had given him. "Percy, what are you doing?"
"Push-ups," Percy replied, not looking at his father, then he used his free hand to flip the page. "For whatever reason, I find it easier to study and keep the information when I work out when reading."
"That's an interesting development. When did you figure this out?"
"About five minutes ago."
"Interesting; I'll have to induct this into your training. When you're done with your set, you and I are going to spar."
"Okay, dad." Percy returned his focus to his book. "So stupid."
"What is stupid?"
"I'm reading about Caligula; how do you become emperor and make a horse a senator?"
"Caligula wasn't exactly known for having his head on straight. There are also things he did that you're not ready to learn." Ignia had a flash of one time he'd visited Rome and saw what Caligula was doing in his free time. Then a horrible image flashed where Caligula had Percy in the same position, Ignia started growling, and the temperature of the cave started rising in response to his anger.
"Are you okay, dad?"
"Nothing you need to concern yourself with, Percy," Ignia replied coldly. "I'm going to blow off some steam; I've got a fire that's raging to get out. Stay here and continue your studies."
"Okay, dad." Ignia walked out of the cave, took to the skies, and turned to Boston. When Ignia landed, he shifted to his human form and began walking over to the pond where a bronze statue of nine ducks was sitting. Ignia smiled to himself.
"I think I'll head to Jotunheim. The giants ought to give me a good workout; if not, I'll track down Thor." Ignia tapped on the statue, and they sprung to life, hovering in the air, then forming a doorway where a branch of an enormous tree stood on the other side. Ignia stepped through, and the portal closed behind him. Ignia looked around and sniffed the air. "If I recall correctly, Jotunheim was this way." Ignia started walking down the branches leaping to adjacent ones on occasion. Eventually, Ignia walked across another branch that extended into the land of the Giants. As Ignia stepped into the realm, the scents of Jotunheim barraged his Draconic senses. "Ahhh, a breath of fresh air; how I've missed this." Ignia walked around, sniffing the air for any Giants. Eventually, he found a group, all huddled around an enormous fire. "Perfect, a group of mountain Giants, to quote my father, 'I'm all fired up now.' Such a ridiculous phrase, but I'll admit, Natsu made it grow on me." Ignia walked up to them, his content smile slowly transforming into the cruel battle-lust look he adorned against Natsu.
"What the?" One of the Giants spoke as he watched Ignia approaching. "A human, why is a human in Jotunheim?"
"Good day," Ignia greeted, "Tell me, which one of you here is the strongest?"
"What does that matter to you, human? Unless you intend on fighting us all?" Ignia's smile widened.
"Not bad, oaf, that's exactly what I intend on doing, I'm in a bad mood, so I'm hoping you can give me a decent challenge." The giants all looked at each other, then started laughing.
"You're a funny human, but you are no match for a gi-" Ignia cut the giant off by punching him in the jaw, sending the Giant sprawling.
"I don't like being called a human; I'm much more than that." Ignia ignited his fists, "So who's going to come at me next." The Giants uprooted trees and swung them at Ignia, who punched and kicked them, the trees shattering on impact. Ignia then ran up one of the Giant's arm, which swung at him. Ignia leaped into the air, fist igniting, and he hurled a punch into its face sending him slamming into the mountain.
"He's a fire Giant?!"
"Fire Giant," Ignia laughed, "no, I'm not a fire giant." Ignia smiled, "I am Ignia! THE FIRE DRAGON GOD!"
"A dragon in Jotunheim?!" The giants all held up their hands and magic circles appeared in them.
"Curse of Misfortune!"
"Curse of Vunriablity!"
"Curse of Greater Crippling!" The waves of magic collided with Ignia, who roared in defiance.
"You call that magic?!" Ignia charged in punching the Giants, breaking their bones and slicing through their skin like they were made of tinfoil. "This is magic!" Ignia inhaled. "Fire Dragon God: ROAR!" Ignia unleashed a tsunami of flame, which splashed over everything. The giants howled in pain as they were incinerated; in mere seconds, they were nothing but ashes. "Ugh, they were weak; I didn't even have to try." Ignia walked back towards Yggdrasil, shaking his head, "I swear, these giants are getting weaker each generation."
"It's been a long time, Ignia." Another Giant stepped in front of the Fire Dragon.
"Utgard-Loki," Ignia glared at the king of mountain giants. "I hope you'll offer me a better challenge."
"You have become arrogant in your power; I look forward to taking your life on Ragnarok."
"Please," Ignia dismissed. "There was only one being I feared, and that was long ago when I was but a hatchling. Now not even Acnologia scares me."
"But what about your son, Percy? Was it." Ignia's eyes narrowed, his anger growing.
"If you or one of your kind has laid even a finger on him. I will burn Jotunheim to ash."
"Talk is cheap, Ignia." Ignia's body glowed Orange, returning to his draconic form, now towering over the Giant.
"Then how about a demonstration." Ignia raked his claws across Utgard-Loki's chest, slicing through the Giant's skin, causing blood to spurt from the wound. Utgard-Loki looked down at his chest; shock was written on his face. "Fire Dragon God: Iron fist!" Ignia punched Utgard-Loki in the chest, roasting his chest. Ignia swung his back leg. "Fire Dragon God: Talons!" Ignia kicked Utgard-Loki, sending him sprawling back. The Mountain Giant King started struggling to his feet, only for Ignia to pin the Giant to the ground under his claw.
"How is this possible," Utgard-Loki thought as he looked up at Ignia in horror. "He's only gotten more powerful; I thought his strength had waned. When did he gain this much power?!"
"You will NEVER threaten Percy again." Ignia lowered his head, glaring Utgard-Loki in the eye. "If I EVER find you near him, I'll make Jotunheim look a thousand times worse than Muspelheim. Do. Not. Test. Me."
"That boy will be your undoing one day, Ignia." Ignia pressed his clawed foot deeper into Utgard-Loki's chest, and blood seeped from the wound.
"Last warning, be silent, or Jotunheim will be your grave too." Ignia lifted his foot and took to the skies, surveilling the world below. "Perhaps a demonstration is necessary." Ignia inhaled again. "Fire Dragon God: Roar!" The ocean of flame shot from Ignia's mouth again, burning the trees, ground, and rocks. When the smoke cleared, the earth was melted slightly, and a massive crater rested where Ignia had unleashed his fire. Ignia flew away, leaving a battered, burned, and defeated Utgard-Loki to observe the destruction the Dragon had unleashed. Ignia passed through the gateway back to Yggrasill and then back to Midgard. Ignia cast an illusion spell on himself to appear as a swarm of ducks to the mortals and maintained it until he was high enough that no one could see his true form. Ignia flew back towards his mountain home; his anger cooled. "Still not satisfied, but I must prepare Percy for what is coming."
