Chapter 30:Reflection Part 1(Hunk's POV)
Author's Note: The reason Reflection is in parts is because I want to explore what the paladins are feeling about all of the craziness going on. Which is why Hunk and Pidge are going to the first two POV's I am exploring and then the rest will follow later, as Lance, Allura and Marinette have all had their time to shine. All the Reflection chapter parts happen at the same time, so while Hunk is having his thoughts the others are too. Enjoy:)
Hunk started at the abyss of red gas. Yellow wasn't working and he couldn't contact the others. Oh what were they thinking? Rushing after Allura so carelessly. Why was the universe against them? They lost Keith and Shiro and now possibly their lives from being stuck here on a planet that is messing with their systems.
Perhaps him and Pidge should look into modifying the lions systems to withstand this sort of thing so it doesn't happen again.
But then they run the risk of making things wrong because they don't know how Alfor built the lions. Though if Pidge was able to make a cloaking device on the Green Lion without knowing the blueprints of that lion, then maybe they have nothing to worry about.
Hunk grips the controls, oh how he wished he was closer to Keith and Shiro instead of spending so much time with Lance and Pidge. Losing them when he still wasn't all that buddy-buddy with them hurts.
It also makes him feel undeserving of this sadness he feels for the both of them. As he didn't know them well enough to be sad at Keith's disappearance and Shiro's death.
If only he was more nice and more outgoing than staying in the comfort zone of being with people he actually knows. But that's all in the past, and there's nothing he can do to change that.
Despite how desperately he wants to. Hunk wants to be more friendly with Keith and Shiro, instead of viewing them as superiors. Cause let's face it, Shiro and Keith were more able to handle fighting this war than he was.
In fact he was probably more homesick than the others. He never wanted to go on this journey.
Never.
So then why did he choose to go into the Blue lion? To agree with Lance, to stay and fight(well Hunk didn't want to stay the first time the Galra came at them, but stayed because Pidge and Lance afterwards didn't want to go, well Pidge did later, but then came to the conclusion to stay).
And it's not like he hasn't had fun on this Journey. He has, but with sadness clinging to him, he feels he can't fight this war anymore. Despite Marinette being so willing to continue a fight she was dragged into, despite the fact that everyone clearly missed Keith and didn't really see her as an equal until the Balmera fight. Well Lance did, he was more accepting of Marinette than Hunk was.
Because he was working up the courage to try and break down Keith's walls, and be a friend to Keith. But Marinette ended up switching with Keith before Hunk could truly call himself Keith's friend.
He found himself hating that he would ever hate someone else just because he didn't act on the many opportunities to be Keith's friend, and to hate Marientte for being the reason for it all, when it was by accident that she switched places with Keith.
She never knew it would happen and it hurts Hunk to think that he would ever even think of that of such a nice person. For Pete's sake she made them outfits when she didn't have to.
She took on the role as leader of Voltron when she didn't have to.
Hunk admits that he was rather relieved when the Black Lion finally chose someone to lead. But he wasn't expecting the new leader to be the girl who got into this mess because of a fight in Paris.
It seems surreal, everything that had happened to them all.
Like a dream. But it's real, and he can't wake himself up no matter how hard he tries. So there's only one thing to do, be better. Be supportive of Marientte as the leader no matter how much he misses Shiro, cause like she said, 'I won't be replacing Shiro.' And that makes him smile a little. To know Marinette isn't going to be like Shiro, but instead be her own Black Paladin.
Hunk promises that now he will be a better leg of Volton, lifting up the team as best he can.
