Author's Note: Luz gets frustrated and hungry sometimes. Inspired by another Hereforthehurts post. Some mild angst, and low blood sugar.
"Luz…?" Their voice trailed off as they found the lights off in her room. The hallway cast an eerie light in Luz's room. Raine glanced around inside. It had been a few minutes, they'd both had a chance to cool off after the argument. Raine had figured they'd better talk with her themselves and clear the air.
Not seeing her, Raine was about to close the door when they heard Luz sniffle. "Luz, are you okay?"
They squinted into the dark and saw a silhouette by the window shrug a bit. Raine tilted their head, then slipped inside, and shut the door. They moved closer. Luz was scrunched up against the wall under the window, with her blanket wrapped around her. It was a weighted blanket, Raine had lifted it once and was impressed by how heavy it was. They moved across the room slowly, as if approaching a wounded animal. They noticed Luz was nibbling on something. Raine's foot brushed against a box by their feet. It was something from the human world. "Oven-baked bars" was written on the container.
"Sorry…" Luz muttered.
Raine crouched in front of her, keeping a certain amount of distance from her. "Luz, I didn't mean to snap at you like that…"
"I'm sorry…I shouldn't've…" Luz made a snrk sound, "I'm sorry." Raine fell silent. They saw Luz's phone buzz. A notification. "Sometimes I forget to eat. I get mad sometimes."
"Oh. Do you have a, uh…" Raine thought of the word for the condition, "The Wasting Blood?"
"Huh?"
"It's a blood condition. Do humans have that? It makes one need to eat periodically, and–"
"Oh! No, no I don't have diabetes." She made another snrk, "I'd be dead by now if I did. I don't know where we'd find insulin here. No, my mom just says I get hangry." They nibbled on the bar more. "I'm sorry. I forgot to eat lunch."
"Does Eda know? Do you need anything?"
Luz sniffled and coughed out a soft sob. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to yell at you, it's my stupid fault." She wrapped herself tighter in the blanket.
They weren't even sure how it started. It was some stupid little argument. Luz came back late. Raine was worried, and they had gotten into a heated argument way too rapidly. Raine snapped at her, and Luz shouted back, incredibly angry. Then she'd retreated upstairs, despite Eda's calls.
"It…uh, sounds like there's more than that." Raine sat down at the end of her sleeping bag.
"I'm just…everything's so messed up." She rubbed her eyes. "I'm stressed about everything, about going home, about staying, about…" She sighed and sniffled. "I'm sorry…"
"No, no, it's alright…I'm a bit grumpy too," Raine chuckled a little. "I'm sorry, I guess I'm still not used to this."
Luz shrugged again. "'S'alright." She squirmed a bit and let out a low moan.
Raine shuffled closer and put a hand on her shoulder. "It's okay, Luz, it's okay…"
To their bewilderment, Luz looked out from under the blanket and her eyes filled with more tears. She shuffled closer as well, still against the wall, but leaned into their touch. "Do you mi…" No, stupid question. Of course she does. "Is there anything I can do?" They lifted their arm, and seemingly not noticing, Luz scooched closer to lean against them.
"I hate being hangry…" Luz groaned, "It makes me feel so bad, sometimes even the word makes me angry, and I just…I just want to break something until I start crying then I'm so tired…" She rubbed at her leg. "A minute ago I wanted to break something or hit something so I just punched my leg. Ow."
Very slowly, and very delicately, Raine moved their arm around Luz, "Don't hurt yourself."
Luz sniffled. Raine groped around for something that felt like a tissue box and passed it over. The girl blew her nose messily, "I'm sorry, I just…" She burst out into tears again, "I hate this. I feel so...I feel like I can't control myself, like my feelings aren't real, or something, I just..." Her voice continued like that, repeating those two words as she mumbled additions. She couldn't seem to finish, and that seemed to frustrate her.
"It's alright, Luz, it's alright," Raine soothed.
After a long pause, they gently lifted their arm away and materialized their instrument. The bard thought for a moment what to play, thinking about what they knew of humans. "What kind of music do humans listen to?"
"Luz? Raine?" Eda came up the stairs. She hadn't heard any smashing, which she thought at first was a good thing, but realized silence could be worse. She'd told them Luz needed time to cool off, but had been distracted by King when she heard them walk up the stairs.
She hoped nothing had been broken. By either of them. Or by Hooty "helping". Yeah, that was what she was truly scared of.
Raine sang softly in Spanish, as Luz lay her head on their leg.
