Chapter 2: Midnight Interrogations
In truth, Kal had never really given much thought as to just how many times he had swooped in to defend Zatanna from an attack during a battle or exactly how many times he had picked her up in his arms to fly her to safety when some overly volatile object suddenly decided to explode nearby them.
Not until Barry in all of his usual Barry-Bluntness, had rather annoyingly pointed it out to him on the Leagues flight back to Earth from the Green Lantern Core's original Homebase of the planet Oa after helping their friends Hal, Jessica and their mentor Kilowogg assist their fellow Lanterns fight off an invasion from their red rivals… where he had done both of those things… in that exact order.
The Javelin of Justice was currently soaring through the cosmos at top speed towards Earth, having had called in most of their League's members for this most dangerous and diplomatic of missions, there was no time to waste in getting back to their own, now largely undefended homeworld.
Still, even with Jon at helm of the ship, piloting the Javelin through the seemingly never-ending blackness of space, with only the stars to light the Martian Manhunters way, it was going to be a long trip home, at least until sometime late tomorrow evening… whenever tomorrow was in the starry vacuum of space they were currently traveling through.
As such, he and all his friends had become very bored by this point and were now trying to find ways of dealing with this problem that plagued them.
On the way to Oa, they had spent the trip preparing to enter a warzone on an alien planet and had been too anxious to be bored by the long flight, but now, on the way back, after the day had been saved and they had all returned from battle, miraculously safe and sound, they now needed to find something occupy their respective free time with.
On his way back to his room aboard the ship, Kal had seen small groups of his friends gathering in the Javelins main war room to hang out and talk, or passed by particular pairs sneaking off into each other's rooms for some… one on one time together… or two on one, from what he was hearing from behind certain people's doors.
However, Kal was currently too tired to think about much of anything that his pairing up friends might be doing at the moment, he had learned a long time ago that he required less sleep than most of the people he knew, which in truth was sort of a blessing back in his Champion of Themyscira days and even now in his time as the Protector of Metropolis and Leader of the Justice League, as it allowed him to train and patrol more so than his friends, the fact remains, even he needed to get some shut eye every now and then.
As such, he had been sinking into the softness of his bed whilst giving out a much-needed sigh of relief, pulling his warm blanket over his torso and nestling his face into his favourite pillow, completely ready and willing to fall into the land of pleasant dreams for the first time in a while.
But NO, that wonderful idea was sadly put on hold when Kal heard the unmistakable whoosh of his rooms metallic door sliding open to reveal Barry's unmasked face, with the light of the hallway behind him causing his long shadow to cast into the Kryptonians room as he gave his half-sleep friend a playful smile.
"Hey Kal, buddy, you still awake?" The Speedster asked in a rather overly friendly, bothersome tone of voice that reminded Kal far too much of Hermes at his most annoying at that moment, as Barry leaned ever so casually against the open doorway, thus preventing it from closing again and making it clear that he was not going to be leaving until he got an answer from him.
Kal rolled over with a groan and faced his grinning teammate with a deadpan expression that would have probably made Hades proud in that moment. "Well, I was trying to, but that plan got kicked out the door rather quickly, just like you soon will be if you don't let me go to sleep, what do you want Barry?"
At these half-hearted threatening words, Barry simply held out his hands in a peaceable gesture that Kal didn't buy for a second, even in his exhausted state of mind, before responding with. "Hey, chill out man, I'm just curious as to why you always feel the need to be so gallant around our resident Sorceress?"
Something about his super-fast friend's choice of words or rather the implications of them anyway, made Kal sit up in his bed and give a Persephone worthy glare at the Speedsters stupid, smug, smirking face from across the room. "And just what, do you mean, by that, Barry?"
The young Kryptonian's rather annoying friend, at the moment anyway, only chuckled to himself in a knowing fashion. "Oh, nothing at all my main Superman, nothing at all, but Kal, you do realise that Zatanna can take care of herself in a fight though, right? I mean you don't need to go flying in and sweeping her off her feet every time something around us decides to go kaboom."
"Barry, either go away right now and let me sleep or I swear, I will chase you around the ship for the rest of the trip back to Earth." Kal said, deciding he had more than enough of exactly where this little conversation of theirs was going. "You are not the first smart mouthed Speedster I have beaten the crap out of, you know."
"Alright buddy, fine, I'll leave." Barry said as he seemingly relented his Midnight Interrogation of his League's fearless leader, but not before getting one last jab into his friends-tired face. "I guess even Zatanna's Knight in Shining Armour needs his beauty sleep."
Now, if he it had been nearly anyone else standing in his doorway at that exact moment, Kal's favourite pillow would have hit them directly in their smug face and thrown them back into the hallway from the sheer force of the impact.
Instead, Barry just gave his best impression of the Looney Tunes Roadrunner and with a meep-meep, promptly zipped away from harm as fast as he could, causing Kal's favourite pillow to fly straight through the open doorway and hit the opposite wall with a dull thud before falling to the hallway floor with a slightly louder thud.
Groaning in both exhaustion and irritation now, Kal got up from his bed and went to go retrieve his favourite pillow from the hallway, after opening the door and after looking both ways to make sure that Barry or anyone else was not in the corridor, he walked outside and got his pillow.
While inside his tired head, Kal's brain went into overdrive mode as despite himself, Barry's words had apparently triggered some slide show of recent memories as the Kryptonian quickly went through a list of previous battles and team training sessions as if they were a gag reel and reluctantly realised that his fast-talking friend may have had a point.
Okay, so maybe he had gone out of his way to block an incoming attack coming for her from behind more than once during their brief time on Oa and maybe he had picked her up and carried her in his arms out of danger when the situation got a little too explosive for his likening instead of just waiting for her to magic herself out of there… and maybe he had made a point of being by her side during team training sessions as of late…
HOWEVER, that was perfectly alright and completely reasonable response, right? Teammates and comrades in arms looked out for each other, both in training and on the battlefield, he would do the same for any of his friends… right?
Besides, Kal concluded as he now walked back to his bed, that he would rather perform what Steve had creatively called a Flying Tarzan manoeuvre than allow Zatanna to be stabbed in the back by a would-be assassin or be burned to death by a sudden, fiery explosion.
Such gruesome thoughts made Kal shudder uncomfortably, the Kryptonian knew he was probably overreacting, but he could never risk letting that happen to her when he knew had the power to prevent it, seeing her so gravely harmed would be too much for him to bear.
Kal suddenly stopped moving, his right hand held his pillow by his waist and his left had been lifting up his bed sheets.
OKAY, where exactly had THAT come from, Kal blinked hard as if the act would just undo what his brain had thought about Zatanna only moments ago, choosing not to dwell on his unexpectedly protective feeling towards the beautiful raven-haired, amethyst eyed Sorceress any further.
Kal decided he would just do what Apollo had once told him to do regarding complex thoughts and confusing emotions concerning attractive women… he would just ignore them until they went away.
Anyway, if Zatanna had such a problem with him 'sweeping her off her feet' as Barry had so pointedly dubbed his acts of heroism, then she would have surely told him by now, right?
It was at that moment, just as Kal was about to climb back into bed, that he suddenly felt another's presence in the room, right behind him, he spun around on his feet, eyes glowing red, ready to defend himself from whoever this intruder was, only to stop dead in his tracks as soon as he saw WHO it actually was.
"Zatanna!" He exclaimed as his burning red eyes turned back blue, almost dropping his pillow in shock.
The Sorceress was standing in the darkest corner of his room with crossed arms and an even crosser look on her beautiful face, she had seemingly having appeared out of thin air… which he realised belatedly, WAS a very real possibility for someone with her particular set of magical powers.
She wasn't currently looking at him though, instead she was staring at the opposite wall where the portrait of his sister and his mother he had made a while ago and brought with him on this trip sat, to remind him of one of the things he was fighting for back on Earth before he went to war.
"Kal." She began with that ominous tone of voice that instantly demanded the attention of whoever she was talking too and had also helped her earn the title of the Amethyst Dragoness. "We need to have a talk, now."
For a brief moment, Kal almost wished for Barry to come barging back into his room again, just to help break the awkward tension he was suddenly feeling in the air between the two of them.
But unfortunately for the now nervous Kryptonian, no such interruption happened and he was left alone in his room with the Mistress of Magic, Kal didn't know if he should be happy or terrified about that.
Zatanna silently moved out of the far corner of his room and started coming closer to him, she still wasn't looking at him though, even when she stood right before him, her glowing amethyst eyes seemed to gaze all about the room, looking in every possible direction that wasn't directly his, her expression seemed to convey that she was so annoyed with him at the moment that she didn't even want to look at his face just yet.
Kal did not like the implications of that at all and was suddenly wishing it had been an actual intruder he had sensed coming into his room instead of a Shadow Sorceress who was the goddaughter of the Greek Primordial Goddess of Night.
He liked his chances of winning against anyone else much better…
"Umm, okay." He agreed hesitantly before looking around his darkened room and asking what he thought was suddenly a very important question to ask. "Wait, how did you…?"
"I'm the Shadow Sorceress, Kal, I can travel anywhere there is shadows." She told him with a single raised brow and a slightly sardonic tone of voice, then as if to reinforce her point, she gave a magical wave of her right hand and the very shadows of his room swirled around her open palm. "Remember?"
"Right, right, I… I had actually forgotten you could do that." Kal answered rather awkwardly, feeling more than a little uncomfortable with the reminder that this Princess of Darkness could with ease travel to almost anywhere she wanted to go, at any time, via her natural connection to the Shadow Realm, possibly even inside people's minds…
He did not want to even think of the things these she might find inside his head, his memories, his dreams, his nightmares, and all of his dark fantasies… namely because she was featured prominently in most of them.
Kal quickly stopped that train of thought right in its mental tracks, for all he knew, she could read his mind just by looking at him, which she was currently doing and subtly moved his favourite pillow to be positioned in front of his waist just in case his body betrayed what his mind hopefully would not.
"Which actually brings me back to my original reason being here tonight, Kal." Zatanna continued in that more than slightly ominous tone that kept him on edge. "Just so we are clear, you DO actually remember now that I'm an exceptionally skilled and powerful Sorceress, one who has been trained in all manner of the mystic arts since birth, right?"
Her rather unexpected question took him by surprise, of course he remembered that about her, she was Zatanna Zatara, Daughter of the Giovanni the Great and Syndella the Spectacular, she was the Shadow Sorceress, the Mistress of Magic, the Lady of Illusions, the Artist of the Arcane and the Demonslayer for crying out loud.
While he was sure he had yet to see the full extent of her magical abilities, Kal had no doubt in his mind at this point that if the time ever came for it, she could easily hold her own against any of the Greek Gods in battle.
"Yes." He answered hesitantly, still a little confused by her question.
"Very good Kal." She said curtly, as though she was a teacher and he was a student that was being given him a stern lecture on how to behave in class. "But putting all that aside, you DO also realise that I'm a fully capable woman who can and has taken of herself plenty of times before in fight, even without the use of magic, right?"
Once again, her question threw Kal through a great loop of confusion, he really didn't know what she was getting at with these easy to answer questions, she was easily one of the most skilled and capable women he had ever met, and given the fact he had grown up on an island ruled by proud Amazon warriors and was regularly visited by Olympian Goddesses, that was saying an awful lot about her capabilities as a Sorceress.
Not only that, but her fighting prowess with her vast arcane arsenal, especially her Torch Blades of Darkness easily rivalled that of any of his mother's greatest warriors, even the likes of his sister Diana and her Princess Circle friends, if not for the fact that she was a Sorceress, Kal had no doubt Zatanna would be more than welcomed into the Amazon's Sisterhood.
The Sorceress before him was both a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield and breath-taking sight to behold, one that Kal had stolen as many secret glances as he possibly could without losing his focus during his training with his teammates, at least he had hoped that they had been secret… he wasn't so sure anymore…
"Of course, I do Zatanna." He said, answering a little more assuredly this time, wondering just what this little midnight Interrogation was really about.
"Okay Kal, if do you know all of this, then I need to ask you… why?" She asked, turning to look at him now with a heated glare and crossed arms, her amethyst eyes glowing staring right through him like purple daggers in the darkness.
"Why, what?" Kal couldn't help but ask her, even though it made him sound as stupid as he felt in that moment.
"Why then do always you feel the need to play the role of Knight in Shining Armour around me whenever we go into battle?" The Sorceress suddenly snapped irritably at him, her eyes briefly flashing white in annoyance and the very shadows of his darkened room warping around them, particularly around her form, responding to her very agitated state and despite himself, Kal couldn't help but shiver…
"I am NOT some damsel in distress who needs saving all the time, Kal." The Zatanna continued in a much calmer tone, the shadows ceasing to dance around them to Kal relief. "I can and I have looked after myself just fine in battle long before I met you, and besides, we've already got Justin to fill the role of Chivalrous Shakespearian around here, so why are acting so gallant around me lately?"
As she asked this question, Kal couldn't help but notice there was something about Zatanna's tone of voice that went beyond simple annoyance or anger, he had seen frustrated or pissed off enough times to notice the slight difference, she didn't just sound mad, she sounded… upset?
Why should she be upset and furthermore, why with him? Just because he had wanted to protect her and gone out his way to do so?
Unless… wait! Did she… did she think that he thought of her as weak even with her vast magical powers and arcane knowledge, that she was incapable of protecting herself in fight without assistance from others, specifically without assistance from him?
Kal couldn't help the small flash of anger that coursed through him at that realisation, annoyed at both Zatanna for ever thinking that he doubted her in anyway and but even more so at himself for unintentionally making her think that in the first place, luckily however, he felt the anger leave almost as quickly as it arrived as he tried to focus on the situation at hand.
"Well Kal?" The Sorceress asked pointedly with an elegant raised brow. "What do you have to say for yourself, hmm?"
At that particular moment however, Kal really didn't know what to do or say to her that would soothe her clear frustration with him, and was now feeling really uncomfortable with this whole situation he suddenly found himself in, seriously, how did he end up in these situations?
He did not know if it was because he was tired and desperately just wanted to go to sleep, or the fact that both Barry and Zatanna had ambushed him in his room one right after the other, or the fact that what both of them were saying was absolutely true and he had no good answer for either of them and deep down, he knew it…
… or maybe it was the fact that he was in his bedroom, late at night with an incredibly beautiful woman whilst she was standing before him wearing nothing but a tight black tank top and a pair of grey shorts, both pieces of clothing doing nothing to hide her voluptuous figure from his natural night vision.
Don't look at her chest, don't look at her chest, don't look at her chest, dam it Kal! Don't! Look! At! Her! Chest! He thought desperately to himself just as his eyes quickly glanced down at her chest and Kal was suddenly very glad he was holding his favourite pillow down below his waist for obvious reasons. Dam it…
"I… I don't know." He answered rather sheepishly, appropriate as he was honestly feeling more like a Sheep in that moment, than the Wolf he always liked to believe himself to be, as he stood before this gorgeous Dragoness of a woman who was staring angrily right at him. He felt something stirring in his chest, a feeling he could quite place, he pushed it aside though as her stare seemingly intensified.
"That is NOT an answer, Kal". Zatanna said forcefully, narrowing her eyes at him as she did so.
"Look Zatanna, I don't know, okay, really, I just…" He said the only honest thing that came to his mind. "I just don't want to see you get hurt, that's all". Kal winced at his embarrassing, yet honest response, again he felt something rising in his chest and was struggling to contain it before it overwhelmed him.
Zatanna stared at him long and hard after he said that, seemingly trying to stay angry at him but it was clear that something about his truly sincere reply must have broken through whatever magical forcefields she had set up, because the Sorceress's gaze gradually lost its hardness and her arms uncrossed to rest on her hips instead in a more non-confrontational manner. "That's very sweet of you, Kal, and for the record I'm not mad at you either, I just wanted to make it clear to you that I CAN look after myself in a fight, okay."
"Okay Zatanna, I've got the picture and I promise, I won't go swooping in to save you all the time from now on in battle when you clearly don't need it." Kal said, breathing a sigh of relief at what he dearly hoped was the end of this impromptu interrogation.
At these words, however, Zatanna's amethyst eyes turned mischievous in an instant. "Oh, Kal, you misunderstood me, I never said I wanted you to stop."
Now that response REALLY took him by surprise, again the feeling in his chest was rising fast, as Kal stared at Zatanna in surprise. "You… you don't mind then?"
He didn't understand this, a moment ago she was furious with him and now, now she was… flirting with him again, I'm never going to understand Sorceresses. He thought frustratingly to himself.
"No, not at all." Zatanna said in a sultry tone as she came closer to him, making sure to put her hands on his torso when she said these words, while he internally prayed, that she couldn't feel his rapidly pounding heart beneath his muscles.
"I'm a VERY capable woman, but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy having a super stud like you sweeping me off my feet every now and then". She said with her usual dazzling showman smile that made his knees feel weak as water in moments. "Please, feel free to do so, anytime Kal."
She then turned to leave his room, her hands dragging along his chest as she did so while walking away with her usual confident strut that showed off her long legs just as the metallic door opened at her approach.
"Oh, and for the record, stud." She said stopping just outside his door and turning back to look at him with those beautiful amethyst eyes of hers. "With the right suit, I think you'd make a very convincing Knight in Shining Armour, I'm sure Justin would agree that you'd look great in one."
Feeling too numb from her touch to talk at that moment and suddenly, very, very awake, Kal only nodded once in reply, which Zatanna smiled at in her usual sultry way and then walked down the hall towards her own room.
Shaking himself back into reality and quickly stepping back out of his room, Kal watched Zatanna walk away, her black tank top and raven hair blending into the dark shadows of the hallway while her sleeping attire grey short's ran up the back of her upper-legs as she sashayed gracefully down the hallway like she was walking off stage.
How does she do that? Kal wondered as he swallowed audibly in response to mesmerising sight and was extremely thankful for the hallway's low lights at that moment, but also for the fact that no one else was around to see him staring.
"Man, you blew it." A familiar voice said from right behind him.
Kal turned and saw Barry just standing there and looking at him with an expression of great annoyance on his face. "Barry, what are you-".
"I help set you up with a super-hot Sorceress in your bedroom, alone, late at night, in your boxers, and you didn't jump on the opportunity." The Speedster shook his head in clear disappointment. "You, my friend, blew it, big time".
Kal opened his mouth to ask the Speedster what the heck he was even talking about before closing it again, just as he realised the true meaning of his friend's words and the fact that Barry had interrogated him earlier with this midnight rendezvous in mind for him and Zatanna… without bothering to ask him what he thought of this little plan to get him laid.
Kal immediately rose to his full, opposing height, narrowed his eyes and bared his teeth in an angry snarl that made him feel like the Wolf he really was again, especially when Barry backed up suddenly, realising too late that he had overstepped this time.
"Kal, buddy, wait, remember all the good times we've had-."
"Start. Running. Barry." Kal growled out before taking a swing at his friend's head with his favourite pillow. Barry, who only barely managed to duck out of the way in time, sped down the hall with a panicked scream as Kal raced after him with his pillow swung over his shoulder like a fluffy Warhammer.
While neither Kal or Barry got much, if any sleep that night, Kal was able to release a ton of stress just by chasing his Speedster friend around the ship while swinging his pillow at him, like a madman with an axe.
