I do not own The Village.
I do love it so much.
Speaking Further On Such Matters
Delicate Matters
Her son stands before her, her quiet, internal son.
And he has asked something of her . . .
"You've never shown any interest in dancing before."
. . . she did not expect.
He dares to raise his eyes to her, before shyness drops them down again.
"I promised Ivy I would dance with her on our wedding night."
And Alice Walker finds . . .
"Oh, . . ."
. . . she must press down on her smile . . .
". . . you did?"
. . . for fear of unintentionally making mock of him.
And his sincere, earnest love . . .
"Yes."
. . . for Ivy Walker.
"Oh, uh, . . ."
And she finds herself suddenly rambling.
". . . well, there are many types of dances, um, the fox trot, the waltz . . ."
Stops herself, stills.
"Come here, Lucius."
Beckons him with a mother's hand.
And teaches him . . .
". . . two, three, one, two three . . ."
Truth be told, she doesn't quite know how to broach the subject.
"There are, ahem, there are other activities you may find you wish to engage in on your wedding night."
And she has put it off far far too long.
The one of the magics of this place is that it allows the young ones to hold their innocence for a longer while than they may in the world beyond the woods.
And, uncharacteristically, . . .
"It is alright, Mother."
. . . Lucius cuts in.
"We do not need to speak of it."
But Alice presses forward.
"No, it is important-"
It is her duty.
"I have seen the animals."
No matter how uncomfortable.
"Lucius-"
"I know it is not the same."
"Lucius-"
"I think I would prefer to look upon her face, for one."
"Lucius-"
"And come to her with more gentleness and care."
"Lucius-"
"Evenso. We will manage."
She never imagined her son would be so loquacious.
"Well, alright. If you're sure."
And she is relieved.
"I am."
On a number of levels.
Just a little blip to see the blushing from these precious two to DinahRay! Thanks for your review! :D
