A/N:
Oh I wanted to stop at Chapter 59, but I have a quota for every day. Uhng... It has a nice cliffhanger too. Awtsu.
Oh yeah. Warning: Tsuna having urges to hide Hawks. Don't know if you'll enjoy Endeavor's point of view, but he has been one of those who has been there to see and hear Tsuna since his vigilante years up until he enters Endeavor's office. You could skip it. It's not that important... I think?
Anyway, go on. Mwahahaha! Love you!
Chapter Sixty
"Welcome to Endeavor offices." Endeavor greeted them with a beam, causing him to snicker to the side, before the hero dropped his act and gave them a stern frown. "Is that what you expect to hear? Sorry, but I'm not in that kind of mood. And Decimo, stop laughing."
He waved off a hand, stopped his laughter and gave a serious face. "Apologizes."
They're currently in Tokyo, meeting up with Endeavor since he is their guide to the number one's office. He's with Katsuki, Izuku and Shouto. All four of them came from UA to get their packets, which contain their hero costumes. Shouta gave him a 'good luck' before letting them go.
He's honestly more or less excited about this. This isn't part of his future, although it can be an additional. Who knows, he might help someone in the long run. And besides, trolls on Endeavor are unique. He remembers how Hawks kept on trying to make him talk. The man is too serious sometimes.
"I reluctantly gave my permission because Shouto asked, but! I wanted Shouto to come alone!" Endeavor ground on them, scowling.
"But you did give your permission." Shouto pointed out. "So stop complaining."
"Sh-Shouto!"
"Pft." Tsuna burst behind his fist and masked it with a cough.
"I've been thinking about this since the license exam, but..." They all looked at Katsuki who has his usual impassive look on his face. "Dude's a hard-ass."
Tsuna chuckled.
"Shouto! Are you truly friends with this boy?!" Endeavor asked to his son.
"Well, if it means I can watch the top hero at work, I'll put up with it." The blond shrugged.
The brunet doubled over, earning Katsuki's smirk.
"I thought I told you to choose your friends carefully!" The hero yelled to Shouto who didn't answer.
"Thank you for allowing us to join you!" Izuku cut through, earning the top hero's attention.
They started to move and follow the flame hero when he turned around and walked forth.
"I'll learn all I can!" Izuku stated again, earning turquoise eyes on him.
He was going to smile when his intuition knocked on him. He looked over to the other street.
"You said... Shouto isn't me, if I recall." Endeavor worded before looking at the street.
"Wha-"
Tsuna followed immediately when the hero crossed the barrier.
"Hate to burst your bubbles, kids." The hero said as he activated his quirk. "I have no interest in training anyone other than Shouto. If you really want to learn something, stay behind me and watch carefully."
"Please give us your orders!" Izuku shouted as they catched up, earning the hero's attention.
"You have them already?! Stay behind and watch!" Then he flew off.
"'Stay behind and watch'?" Shouto repeated.
"We won't be able to watch if we don't keep up with him!" Izuku voiced.
"Throw your packets!" Tsuna shouted. The three didn't hesitate, so he formed a crystal with his zero-point to keep their pockets in place. "We'll get that later! Go help Endeavor-san! I'll keep an eye out on the civilians!"
"Alright!" The three responded.
With a boast, Tsuna propelled himself to the air to catch up with Endeavor. As the hero sighted the villain disrupting the city's peace, Tsuna inspected what the villain's quirk. Glass manipulation, since he was able to remove the glass on the building. Before the hero can even burst his flames, the brunet swoop down and pulled off a wall of transparent rain flames to the estimated range of the damage.
"E-Eh?" A man blurted.
Tsuna smiled politely as he gripped the rain flames. "Are you alright?"
The man snapped in attention as the others. "Y-Yes."
"Cool." He praised as he retracted his flames. "It's fine now. No need to be afraid. Although you might want to inform your boss about the glasses."
"W-We'll do." A woman stammered before giving a grateful smile. "Thank you."
He sketched his bow. "Always at your service. See you around." And he flew off.
He went back to their packets and unfroze them before using his super strength to run and get to where his intuition is point him. He's so relieved that at some point, his intuition is still spot on. Sometimes, it fails him. Sometimes, it doesn't. It's picky on some things but on point when he tries hard. He should probably practice entering his hyper Dying Will state without the flames manifesting. As much as he trusts his own judgements, it doesn't mean he can let go his intuition. It's the general part of him.
Arriving at the site, he got greeted with police apprehending the glass manipulator villains and two more. Shouto noticed him and carefully helped him with his load, which he didn't mind because he has his super strength as help. Izuku and Katsuki noticed him and took theirs before the greenet apologized. He waved it off and told them that it was his idea for them to leave the packets behind, so he should be the one to retrieve them.
His eyes darted to Hawks. His eyes sparkled at the hero's wings. They're so red and compliments his eyes and shaggy blond hair. He flushed in embarrassment when he noticed Shouto's teasing look. It can't be helped. He's just so used at patting fluffy and cute things. Blame it on the kids that had been around him for years. And Aetu. Definitely Aetu because the kid himself is a mix of adorable and gorgeous. He could just cuddle them. Oh yeah. And Kyouya. He needs to blame his cloud for turning him a softy. And besides, the last time he saw Hawks, he never got to say 'hi' to him.
"Were the civilians alright, Decimo?" He looked up to Endeavor who regarded him. Why so damn tall, man?
He nodded. "Safe and sound. Be careful with your flames, will you? Heroes do minimal damage, not destroy everything." He softly admonished.
The hero huffed at his shameless scolding before looking at Hawks. "And?! What business do you have with me, Hawks?!"
"Well, it's not really business, but..." The blond started off before raising a book. "Have you read this book?"
Caramel met gold before Tsuna stared neutrally at the book. It was the book of the liberation. The Paranormal Liberation Front. Slowly relaxing and entering his Hyper Dying Will even for a wavering minute, Tsuna tried to tap on his intuition.
"So? Have you heard of it?" Hawks questioned more. "These guys have really been growing lately!" He endorsed almost enthusiastically if his face isn't serious. "And they're garnering even more attention after that civilian resistance effort in Deika! It's an old memorandum, but it really foresaw our current society well! 'If only a limited number of people are allowed to live freely, the consequences will fall on those who weren't granted that right' or so they say. If you don't have a lot of time, just read the section I bookmarked, alright?"
The brunet's attention got piqued as his intuition pinged.
"Destro's ideals are everything we could ask for!" The blond continued. "A society where everyone can look out for themselves! It really fits this era!"
"What are you-"
"If we can make that a reality, then we'll have all the free time in the world, Endeavor." Hawks finished off as he handed the book that the flame hero who reached out for it, possibly getting some hint from how the winged hero acted differently. "Make sure you give it a read, alright?"
"A recommended reading from the number two." Izuku gushed with a hand on his chin. "Now I want to read it too. Maybe I'll learn the secret to his speed."
"Then you'll be happy to know I brought extra copies for kids like you!" The hero cheered as he showed four copies.
"He's so well prepared!" Izuku exclaimed. "Where did those come from?!"
"That's right! This is the era of the number two!" The hero nodded. "It's not just raw speed, you need to be quick on the uptake! And for that, you need the ability to predict what the new era will bring us!"
He blinked when the hero handed him the book himself, not like how the others got theirs. "Thanks." Then he hurriedly scanned the contents of the book.
"You must really love this book if you were carrying that many." Shouto commented, as the brunet sees the teen inspecting the lit at the corner of his eyes.
"He must be doing missionary work." Izuku suggested.
"Midoriya gets it!" The hero approved, already turning around while spreading his wings. "I'm recommending this book to all my acquaintances and fellow heroes across the country. I truly believe that, at the very least, the liberation ideology will form the groundwork of society from here on out."
"Hawks-san." He called out as he gazed up to the winged hero. He inspected the young man for a brief sec before raising the book. "Does mine have the same markings as Endeavor-san's?"
A flash of surprise went to those gold ones before their owner nodded. "Yes."
Tsuna went down on one knee and slipped the book inside his packet. "I'll read it and give you a good review about it."
"Thanks. Just really make sure you look over the sections I marked, if nothing else. I especially recommend the second one." Then he softly flapped his wings to float. "Make sure to make the most of the internship. That goes for all five of you!" Then he flew off.
"He's not that much older than us, but he really has a whole different perspective on things." Izuku remarked as they watch the winged hero go. "He's only twenty-two, you know."
"Only six years apart." Shouto calculated.
"Pisses me off." Katsuki muttered.
Tsuna looked at Endeavor who opened the book. "Indeed."
"Katsuki." He called out as he arranged his mittens. "Can you look after my packet? I have some things to get."
"Wha-"
"I'll catch up with you later. I'll be there before Endeavor-san starts to teach us." He activated his flames and propelled himself to the air. "It will be really really quick!" Then he took off.
Not older... Just twenty-two... And yet, he's risking his life to lighten the weight of the world. What was the HPSC thinking? Putting Hawks, a fucking twenty-two years old hero with budding future and youth, on infiltrating the Villain Alliance? Much worse is the Liberation Front?
Idiots. They're sacrificing a life for the sake of humanity? That's stupid. People don't sacrifice others for their gain. Regardless of how willing the sacrificer is. Even if it means the peace of the world. Where's the buddy-buddy system? Do they think Hawks can take on the pressure on both sides? Fuck.
Gritting his teeth, Tsuna boosted more flames and followed where his intuition is pointing him. It didn't take long for him to find the hero. It wasn't hard to match the other's speed with his flames too. Especially with how determined he is.
"A-Ah." Hawks uttered in shock before giving him a smile. "Hi Decimo."
He smiled back as they suspend themselves in the air. "You have a minute or so, Hawks-san?"
"Well, I have a meeting with the... Others."
He blinked. "You mean the league?" The blond nodded. "Just mention my name and they'll understand. So let's go."
He guided him to a near rooftop building and let his flames snuff out as he landed. He winced when he felt a cough coming up and tried to hold it in, only to fail. He brought a hand to his mouth as he doubled over and coughed harsher than normal. He felt stings at the corner of his eyes as he continued to do so. Putting a hand on the ground as he felt someone rubbing his back, he coughed more. Taking deep breaths, he looked at his hand to see a red stain in there. He closed his eyes as a tear slid down before taking out his hankie and rubbing the blood off his hand.
"That was blood." He heard Hawks say.
"My flames are eating my system lately." He explained in a hoarse voice. "Imbalance." He took a deep breath before smiling dismissively. "I'm fine though. Don't tell it to anyone."
"But... You should get a medical help." The hero suggested, crouching beside him.
"Their help can't really stop my flames from eating me." He sighed as patted the tears away from his cheeks. "Anyway, I wasn't meaning for you to see that."
"Ah right. So you need me for?"
He stared at those gold eyes. "Are you okay?" They widened in surprise. "It's not like I think you're injured or something, but you look... Paranoid."
"I'm fine." The other beamed, but his eyes didn't give the same thing.
Tsuna can't help reaching out and pat the yellow hair. It was soft. "Don't give in to the pressure, even though a lot of them are trying to rush you, work in your pace, alright? Tomura-san won't really care. He'll be busy with that blasted doctor. You need to be careful with Dabi though. Although he's my friend and a favorite among them, he's cynical."
"Why?" A curious question of his intention.
He hummed as he retrieved his hand. "I wanted to at least make you feel better. You look really desperate for Endeavor-san to notice what you wanted to say. Don't worry, I know he's checking it out even before I start mine."
The shoulders slumped. "You..."
"I'm not part of the league nor the heroes, Hawks-san." He relied, wanting to explain. "I'm a vigilante. I'm not trying to save the world, I'm trying to save as many lives as I can. If you see me with either groups, it means they accept me for who I am and they don't mind that I oppose the other or I oppose the opposite. I don't side anyone. However, I know how hard it is to be pressured. Those people who doesn't understand my reasons think that I'm a villain already after I healed Stain, and speculated that I'll be the reason why he'll escape from Tartarus someday."
"No criminal gets out of Tartarus." Hawks stated.
He gave him a leveled look as he went for a crouch too. "Are you sure about that?" The other gawked at him. "I have a flame that can disintegrate the walls of Tartarus from the outside. It's not as great as Tomura-san's now, but I can do it. Prison break will never be impossible, Hawks-san."
Gold eyes looked down to the floor in thoughtfulness.
"But," He countered, gaining the hero's attention again. "even if they think they got out, if they aren't careful, heroes can take them on again. Why do you think police capture the same snatcher all the time?"
"O-Oh." Hawks blurted like he realized something nice.
He grinned. "Seriously, you're too cute sometimes." The blond blushed. "Even now that you're blushing. I wanted to say keep up the good work, but don't forget to take care of yourself too." He reached out something from his pocket and took a container with colorful balls inside that. "I can't have you dying on us. You have a bright future ahead."
"Why do you sound like you're older than me?" The other queried.
He blinked up innocently before leaning in to stage whisper. "I'm mentally fifty-six." Then he pulled back to take out five balls with different colors. "These are compressed versions of my flames."
"You have five?"
He nodded. "The trick to use them is to hold them tightly, although it will work once it feels that you're in danger or in dare need of help."
"How will it know?"
He put a fist to Hawks's chest. "Your will. Anyway, yellow is for healing. It can heal your external and internal wounds, or even boast your energy when needed. Blue for tranquil and numbing. It can be used to slow down attacks or numbing pain. Red is disintegration. Hold it tightly, touch something, voila! It will crumble to dust. Mist is for illusion. You're on escape, you don't want them to see you? Hold it tightly and it will come forth."
"All by will?"
"Resolve. Strong desire. Desperation." He pulled a small draw string bag from his breast pocket. "No wonder I felt like I needed to take this with me. I'll give something to you all along."
He earned a chuckle. "Just like the chocolate."
"Tehe." He beamed as he slid inside the balls, closed it and handed it to him. "Like I said awhile ago, if they ask why you were late, mention my name, Tsunayoshi Sawada, Sawada, Tsunayoshi or just Tsuna, and they'll understand." Gloved hand reached for the small bag with a 'H' on the center. "Tell them I took your time because I wanted to know how were they and to tell them I said hi. Capiche?"
The blond nodded and tucked the bag away. "Thanks."
"Come here." He said and hugged Hawks who froze. Tsuna tightened his hold, letting as much warmth as he can to make the hero feel safe. "You carry a lot in your shoulders, but you have a life too. You're alive. Heroes' victory is not necessarily a win if not everyone is alive, Hawks-san. If something happens in the future, keep on fighting to survive and live, okay?"
Small arms wrapped around him. "Okay."
"Once I become fine again, I'll treat you some food I can recommend, and I'll make you meet my Dad. I promise."
"Am I courting you?"
He parted a little and smirked playfully. "Are you?" The winged hero blushed as he leaned away. "Yie. Kidding. You're so easy to tease for someone who has a cool front."
"D-Decimo." The other chided.
He laughed. "Sorry sorry. I just wanted you to feel different instead of the usual grieve. I mean, it sometimes soothes us when we remember something funny. And I guess it works. I mean you blushed and seems like you're going to remember this for a while."
Gold eyes expressed gratefulness. "Thank you."
He patted the blond's hair as he smiled widely. "Don't give up. Everything will be alright, Hawks-san. I promise you."
He helped the young man stand up with his super strength. Hawks gaped at him when he told the other that he has two quirks. He could only laugh. They parted in the sky, going off to different directions.
(Hawks felt lighter and warm when he arrived to the Liberation Front.)
(When he was asked why he was late, the brunet's name worked like magic to the League.)
(He became much closer to them.)
(The orange ball in his small bag grew bigger.)
"... So quit acting like my Dad in front of my friends." Shouto finished off.
Endeavor looked back to what his son has said about his hero persona. 'Since he chose to come here on his own, I assumed he was opening up to he a little... But I was foolishly mistaken.' Regardless, he nodded. "Got it."
He turned to the brunet who has been reading the book during their discussion. Decimo was the one who voiced to him to be not unfair and asked him and Shouto what their current goals too. He honestly didn't consider, but his son agreed and told him what's on his mind. For some reason, Shouto is more brazen than before. Maybe it's the influence of his friends. Especially the brunet's?
Honestly, his first impression of the brunet was he's plain. He thought Decimo is someone with Bakugou's and Deku's quirks, because he showed them to the world during the Sports Festival. But when he saw him going on par with Shouto in their one on one, and earned a draw, he got baffled. However, he was 'ah' when he discovered that the kid is late Young Lion and late Seven's child, and Eraserhead's adoptive son. What impressed him was the vigilante works after they officially introduced him though. Of course he knew those rumours and news circulating around Japan. He has to be on point with the news. He knew how great the teen's works, from the very first year to the latest. No wonder after their small conversation, his mind conflicted on how to label the teen.
Arrogantly dismissive with power, yet politely humble and cautious.
It was completely different with Deku's impression on him. He was miffed with Deku's words, but with Decimo, he got him thinking. What was the difference of their flames? Why did the teen call Endeavor's quirk as fire? Is flames really a will, while his 'fire' came from ambition? Eventually, he shrugged it off, but he knew it was at the back of his mind.
When he got the news that Shouto visited Rei, with a young man, he went curious. Who was the young man who his son came with to the hospital? When he asked the doctor, he named him Tsunayoshi Sawada. He said, along with Shouto's letters, Rei is also becoming more cheerful with Decimo's drawings. The said drawings were like toddler's, full of colors, stick figures and things that almost did not make sense. However, the doctor said those cannot be judged for their contents only because the mind behind those drawings is full of complication. The mind is almost like Rei's, but more... Damaged.
He wanted to determine what that means, but again, it was pushed at the back of his mind. The second time he met the child was when those 'Noumu's appeared in Hosu and Shouto went on his own. Stain was there. His bloodlust when the hero killer saw him was powerful that all of them froze. All except for the brunet who tried to calm the vigilante down. During that moment, when Stain stopped moving and Decimo went to aid him, he thought why do such unnecessary thing? Why help a killer who almost killed them? Why help the man who sees the world differently?
Then he saw who Vongola Decimo really was. The vigilante that the civilians and kids talked about, the heroes have pointed out, and the police have saluted and followed at some time. His desire to help was so strong that it almost rivaled All Might's. The way he glared, his reasons to help, his assurance of safety. Even his sense of indiscrimination. He's not unwilling to go over the laws to recite every human rights that Japan has. He'll go lengths to protect the people he can protect, even if it means flying to cities. He suddenly got thoughtful about it.
What does that mind contain to be that willing at a very young age? To be that dismissive of the comments about him? To be that resilient?
When he got a word that UA students got kidnapped over the summer and Decimo was one of them, he couldn't believe the reason. The brunet jumped right on danger just to save a classmate of his.
'How reckless,' The flame hero thought, 'but heroic too.'
What doesn't settle well with him is how the vigilante doesn't have qualms of killing when he stepped on the Noumu's nape and broke it to greet Inspector Naomasa after saving him. But, he was able to see how the teen worked on the field. The civilians are always his top priority, and never engaged to a fight unless utterly necessary. No wonder that when he saw All Might on the field with the villain, then the ladies behind the weakened hero, he didn't hesitate to land in front all of them and deflect the finishing blow.
Those who did not understand what that means are idiots. Only a couple have pointed out how powerful the kid is after he did that, and regarded as a possible hero who can surpass any of them. At the age of fifteen, he took on a blow that could have killed All Might, he commanded people on the field without any value to their age or rank to save people underneath the rubble, he saved a lot of people that not many of them could with just his medical services he started during the Stain incident, and he did not bat an eyelash to all of events, even when Endeavor pulled him to All Might who was already fainting. Decimo even thought of the mentality of the heroes who are worried for All Might's condition and shooed him away to direct them.
The next time he saw him was in his house, and as a guest to his home. He never felt so left out when he heard Fuyumi and Shouto laughing so hard in the living room while playing snakes and ladders the brunet bought for them. They'll tease and just laugh. But he found himself smiling too, with how at ease his children were for the first time, and how noisy the usually quiet house. It was the same when Natsuo came and was forced to sleep in the house after realizing how late it was for him to go out and back to his dorm.
Maybe it was one of those rare times that he felt off about himself. So when he saw the teen lounging by the patio, overlooking the garden, at one in the overnight, he approached. He knew both of them didn't have a good start. Heck, sometimes he thinks the teen hates him and regards him with politeness and respect for Shouto's sake and his work as a hero. However, he found himself spilling some of his thoughts to the vigilante and getting an encouragement, that someday, his family will forgive him for all of his misdoings and mistakes. He is, after all, a human, the child worded. He has ambitions and he's also learning.
It was too late when he realized that he had spilled his guts to a child, throw away half of his secrets and got consoled about it. When he thought about it, Decimo sounded mature about everything. Like he knew what he did, and curse him for doing it, but also relieved that he's starting to... Change? He really thinks he's going to the right path after he received a praise from the teen. He doesn't know how to repay the kid for flying for his surgery and helping the doctors with it. Even the fact that he got a praise for doing a good job in defending others.
He got jealous with how close the brunet is to his parent. Decimo had been laughing in front of him for the past five minutes while talking on the phone and teasing the people on the other side. He wished Shouto was like that with him. Or even Fuyumi or Natsuo. To even have a child who'll wake up at one in the midnight just to call his parent and bid them 'good night' personally, Eraserhead must be lucky to have such a wonderful son. He wondered if he was a good man, he could've been able to have a family too. With Rei with them, and all of his four children within his reach. All he could do is regret and accept the fact that he may or may not be forgiven.
What highlighted his time there was how Hawks react to the brunet. The winged hero he knew is someone who'll act all jolly and cool and speak what's on his mind. There must have been something that happened between the two that made Hawks so bashful in front of Decimo. The blond was blushing when received the small chocolate, and got complimented with his wings. He wondered what Decimo did when he followed the hero awhile ago.
Anyway...
"What about you, Decimo?" He asked, wanting to be fair.
A snap of a book closing resounded in the room before raging yet determined caramel, almost orange, eyes gazed at him.
Endeavor unknowingly felt his body froze. He knows a suicidal kid when he sees one, and right now, the brunet looks ready to take on the world. Did he finish reading the book and took in all of Hawks's hints? All of his coded message? That fast?
"My assignments are to know more how to save people without risking my life in the process, practice all of my flames for my convenience and at will, and engrave to myself that I have to rely on my second quirk as I am adept with my flames." Caramel eyes darkened to brown. "I cannot afford to slack off when in the future, one way or another, some people out there will be purged because of my incompetence. The least I could do now is focus on my present to have a good future."
He nodded. This is the Encompassing Sky, Vongola Decimo? It rivalled the other three's resolves. "Very well. Let's go."
If the brunet did get what the coded message contains, how will he move?
