I no longer have a Beta for this fic, so all mistakes are my own. I am currently on the hunt for a new one. I hope you like this chapter, it took a pretty wild turn. Let me know what ya think!**
The half-moon hung eerily in the dark sky, shining like a warning beacon for what would come the following night when it rose fully to the eye. Elena sat atop the porch step at my feet, her dress draped around her in a halo of baby blue. The soft crown braid that adorned her head had long since fallen in a heap of curls around her shoulders, and she raked her fingers along her scalp to ease the tension left behind. The night had been long and arduous, fight after fight leaving both of us feeling much like a steel rod of stress, but we had accomplished all we had set out to. Niklaus hadn't made it easy to negotiate after he discovered my past relationship with Tyler; as expected, he had clammed up like an infant. Thankfully, Elijah had come to the rescue and taken over as head negotiator, with only a few grunts of agreement when needed from the childish Hybrid. After dinner, they had both set off to the parlor to draw up Elena's contract. Now it was simply a waiting game. Elena sent word to Stefan, and in turn Damon, that we were alright; I wasn't interested in conversing with either of them. As she took on that burden, I took the time to send a quick text to Tyler, Mason, and Caroline; I didn't want them to worry.
Elena lazily lifted her head, her hair falling off her shoulder in a waterfall of curls, her dark brown eyes heated. "Damon believes I'm in trouble and simply lying to make them think I'm okay. God, I wish a bolt of lighting would fall from the sky and fry his ass up extra crispy," she said, glancing down at her cell. A smirk curled her pink lips and she lifted the phone out in front of her, running her finger across the screen. Her camera activated and she held up her index and middle finger, creating the peace sign, and smiled condescendingly as she snapped a quick picture. "That oughta do it, at least if he has any brain cells left."
I snorted indelicately, reaching up to rub at my cold tickling nose in the process. With a deep sigh, I shook my head. "I think you give him too much credit, at least in his current state. He is panicked and likely has zero brain function left at the moment, Lena."
Elena glanced up, tucking her phone in her jacket pocket, and bit her bottom lip thoughtfully. "He is gonna be trouble, Elara. I know you don't wanna think about it, but despite what you said at dinner, you know he will be. I'm not sure when he'll strike, but he is bound to do something to mess everything up before tomorrow night."
I looked away, unable to fight her logic. She was right; Damon was trouble. To keep everyone I cared about safe, I would be forced to handle him. "I will take care of it, Elena. He will not mess this up for us," I resolutely said.
Elena stood, her head bowed, and she placed a soft hand on my arm. "I'm sorry that it always falls on you, Ellie." Gently she laid her head on my shoulder, her cold nose bringing goosebumps to my skin. "It'll all be over soon. Things will get better once the ritual is over."
My eyes closed in sadness, the days until our birthday flashing through my mind like pages on a calendar; 40 days left. It was hard to believe how close I now was to my next life, but the days passed by as quick as sand, and no matter how hard I fought to grasp the granules, they continued to slip between my fingers. I placed my hand on the back of Elena's head and held her close, my eyes rising to the doorway as a quiet snap broke the silence. Niklaus and Elijah were exiting the parlor, the door swinging shut behind them. Elijah approached holding a crisp white piece of paper, folded down the middle, his brown eyes expertly examining the way I held Elena to my side. His jaw flexed, the muscle in his neck contracting as he lowered his head to one side, hair falling out of his eyes. Niklaus came around from his left, his stern gaze focused on Elena as she stepped away from me, wiping at her watery bloodshot eyes.
"Are we interrupting something?" Niklaus asked, scanning our surroundings, nostrils flaring.
Elena shook her head, hands reaching up to brush strands of hair behind her ears. Her widened eyes dropped on Elijah's hands, and the folded paper he held. "Is that it? If so, I am ready to sign," she determinedly said.
With a deep weary sigh, I rolled my eyes at her lack of self-preservation. Raising my hands, I motioned for her to slow down, shaking my head. "Whoa now, no one is signing a thing without reading it thoroughly first." Turning my head, I looked over at the Mikaelson men, a sarcastic smile pulling at my lips. "Not that I don't trust you, but I'm sure you'll both agree that the trickster gene runs in your family. Sometimes I think Loki himself blessed you with it."
Niklaus's face brightened, his lips pulling back, revealing his perfect white teeth, in an iniquitous grin that left my knees trembling like jello. A tiny smile graced Elijah's face and he minutely shook his head, but his brows rose as if he agreed with me. "Hand over the document, brother. It seems Elandra was a lawyer in another life," Niklaus said, his grin turning crooked, amused by his own rather dark joke.
Elijah turned to shoot Niklaus a glare, his eyes crinkled with dislike, and the sound of crunching paper could be heard before he stepped forward, handing over the small crinkled paper. I gently took it, smiling up at him, my gaze sympathetic. He was not as open to dark humor as Niklaus and Kol were, but before I could do more than make eye contact, Niklaus was standing behind me, his chin on my shoulder. Taking a deep breath, I watched sadly as Elijah took a heavy step backward, his head lowered. I quickly moved 'speak with Elijah alone' to the top of my checklist.
"Are you going to read the contract love, or are we going to stand here until the doppelganger ages into disuse?" Niklaus whispered into my ear.
Opening the paper, I elbowed the annoying Hybrid in the chest. With a grunt of pain, he stumbled backward, and I glanced over my shoulder, a shocked expression on my face. "Oops, I'm so sorry! I can be so clumsy."
Bent over, hand placed on his chest, he released an annoyed breath, eyes wide with aggravation. With a shrug that read 'what did you expect, I chuckled, looking down at the paper.
The elegant cursive script was that of Elijah, and I momentarily glanced up, finding him standing beside the staircase, his back to me. The contract was to the point and exactly what I had expected from them. It simply stated that Elena was to have no contact with the Salvatores from now until the ritual and that after, she was not to become a vampire unless otherwise agreed upon by Niklaus. In continuation, it stated that she was to be available the first of each month to donate blood and that she would agree to keep herself out of harm's way as much as humanly possible. As I read, I nodded along, agreeing with what they had written, until I got to the bottom, and my eyes narrowed into slits. "Elena Gilbert will agree to have one child by the time she is 30, to continue the Petrova bloodline." I lowered the paper, my gaze quickly finding Niklaus, who stood a few feet from me.
"You are trying to dictate when and if she has children?" I asked, a dangerous curve to my voice.
Elena gasped in anger, her feet rushing against the tile as she joined my side. "Excuse me? I don't know if I particularly want children!" she stated.
I raised my hand for her silence and inhaled deeply to remain in control of my emotions. This was a sore subject for me, having been controlled by men many times in past lives. It was not something I enjoyed. I held out my hand, palm up, and turned to Elijah. "Pen, please," I asked.
Elijah silently opened his suit jacket, his expression pleased and a bit smug as he stepped past Niklaus, pulling a pen from his inside pocket. Niklaus watched with constricted eyes, his shoulders stiff and lips thin as Elijah placed the pen atop my awaiting palm. I nodded in thanks and placed the pen in between my teeth to pop off the lid. I walked over to the table next to the front door and laid the contract atop it. Without hesitation, I scribbled over the pregnancy mandate. I tapped the end of the pen against my chin as I read on. The rest of the contract was basic enough, just a few simple agreements about health regulations, and what she was and was not allowed to do before and during the ritual. When I finished, I popped the lid back on the pen and turned, locking eyes with Niklaus.
"I'm sure Elena would be comfortable agreeing to everything in this contract, aside from the pregnancy clause. She will not be agreeing to that. No one will regulate what she does with her body. If Elena decides in the future that children are something she wants, then that will be her choice, no one else's. With that being said, this contract ends with her. Her children will not be a part of it," I firmly said, eyes narrowed.
I had always planned to help Niklaus create Hybrids because I knew deep down that until he did, he would never feel complete; it was an experience he needed. Even still, there was no way I could look my sister in the eye knowing I'd have even a small part in hunting her descendants.
Niklaus adjusted his stance, crossing his arms over his chest as he scanned my face, his expression stoic as he internally debated. Elena stepped forward, looking over at Elijah who was watching his brother carefully for warning signs. She held her hands together in front of her, her shoulders stiff with worry. "I know that you want to carry on creating Hybrids even after I age and die, but by then you'll have so many that I doubt it will seem like that big of a deal anymore. You'll have a sufficient army and your 'super' vampire family; isn't that enough?" she said, her voice lilting in confusion by the end.
With a raised brow I looked at Niklaus, crossing my arms and cocking my head to one side. Elena had a good point, he needed to decide when enough would be enough for him. If he kept searching for more, he would eventually reach a point where his need destroyed everything he loved. With a tight jaw, Niklaus looked away, the muscle in his cheek ticking with irritation. This was not something he was used to, being called out on his bullshit by someone he couldn't dagger or kill; it was about time.
"You know nothing of what I will want in the future doppelganger," Niklaus spat.
With my hands on my face, I grumbled in defeat, annoyed by his inattention to the obvious. He had a fantastic family who would rip apart anyone who crossed him, but he refused to see how much they truly loved him. Gods, Esthar and Mikael had royally fucked him up. I fought to control my impulse to slap him upside the head in an attempt to shake up his thought process, and lifted my index finger, waving it around with a sarcastic smile.
"Excuse me, but I think given the length of time that I and your siblings have known you, that would give us insight into your thought process, and I have to agree with Elena here." Elena hopped onto the balls of her feet, a victorious grin lighting up her face, and I merely rolled my eyes at her triumphant air. "I think you should take into consideration our opinion. I do believe that you will tire of creating Hybrids once you realize that you never really needed them, Nik," I said.
Niklaus stepped closer, his stiff posture reminding me of a cobra ready to strike, and leaned down, face inches from mine. "Just ask what you are neglecting, Elandra. You wish for me to give up my quest to create Hybrids entirely. Do you not?" he accused.
I took a single step back, my skin prickling with unease at his proximity. I did not like to be intimidated, and he knew that. Glaring up at him, I pointed my finger in his face, my cheeks heated. "First of all, how dare you try to go all Original Hybrid on me! Do not try me Nik, I will zap your ass without hesitation. Ask Damon." A soft chuckle echoed from Elena, and I lowered my gaze when Niklaus glanced over at her, his brows twitching with confused interest. I released a shaky breath, my hands trembling with nerves. "As for your accusation, you should know me better than that. If you want Hybrids, then that's what you'll get. I will always help you achieve your dreams, no matter how crazy they may be. That was my promise to you from the very beginning, or have you forgotten?" I said, my voice cracking.
A flash of memory ghosted across Niklaus' face, and he lowered his head, expression tightening with emotion. He took a heavy breath, and after an intense moment, control returned to him. Lifting his head, his eyes narrowed in on my shaking index finger, and before I could remove it from his face, he leaned forward, teeth wrapping around the tip. I yelped in surprise and gently tugged my finger from in between his teeth. "What the hell?" I gasped.
Niklaus smirked, pulling away with a shrug of indifference. "You know I don't take kindly to that sort of disrespect," he simply stated.
Scrunching up my nose, I held my finger to my chest, wiping it against my shirt. Elena stepped up beside me, her face screwed up with disgust. Niklaus looked between us, humor igniting like a spark in his light blue eyes, and he waved his hand out beside him. "Enough of this. You have agreed to ninety-nine percent of the contract; I can live with that. We can always come back to it at a later date."
Elena looked at me in surprise, hope blossoming on her cheeks. I placed my hands on my hips, cocking my head as I examined him. "That's it? No more fighting or bargaining? We simply sign the contract and leave?" I asked in disbelief.
I was surprised that he had decided to fold so quickly. I was prepared to fight at least until morning. Niklaus simply shrugged, walking over to the table, his hand held out as he tilted his head toward the contract. "Sign and we will be done for the night. All I ask is that you follow my rules and show up where you are supposed to tomorrow night," he said.
Slowly I walked toward the table, my eyes squinted in disbelief. "Of course, I will have someone keeping an eye on you, just in case," he casually said, stopping me in my tracks.
…and there it was.
I knew it couldn't be that easy. Of course, it could have been worse, but I was not happy about being watched like some sort of criminal.
Placing my hand atop the table, I ran my finger along the pen, rolling it back and forth. "Is that necessary, Nik. Do you not think me capable of protecting Elena?"
Niklaus looked over at me, his expression twisted with confusion. "Of course I know you can protect her. This is not just for her, Elandra. I want to be sure the both of you are protected from the Salvatores. They could come after the two of you in an attempt to derail the ritual," he said. "You must know how important you are to me…never think this is just about the doppelganger."
I stared at him for the length of a single breath before lifting the pen into the air, wiggling it expectantly. "Elena? What do you think?" I asked, turning to look at the young doppelganger.
I would never force her to sign her life away; this would be her decision to make. My plan had always been to get her to this point and to tell her the truth about what the real consequences would be should she choose to go the same route as Katerina. I had done my part, now it was her turn. Elena inched forward, her face blanching the closer she came to the extended pen. With trembling fingers, she pulled the pen from my grasp, her lips parting as she inhaled sharply.
"I-I'll sign if you think it's all okay," she stammered, stepping up to the table.
I placed my hand atop her shoulder and gently squeezed, leaning close. "Elena, only sign if you want to. It's your life; I don't want you to regret this decision. The last thing we need is for Damon to be right," I said, releasing a weak imitation of a chuckle.
Elena puffed out a laugh but her labored breathing made it sound more like a wheeze, and I winced in sympathy. Slowly, she lowered the pen to paper, her fingers trembling. Her throat bobbed as she swallowed deeply, her eyes misting as she began to sign her name. Sighing, I lowered my hand atop hers, stopping her in her tracks. "Are you sure, Lena? Be sure."
Elena turned her head, glancing up at me with deep understanding, her misty eyes clear. "It's something I have to do, Ellie. For all of us. I won't let fear turn me into my ancestors."
I lifted my hand, satisfied by her answer; one that had more to do with her than it did with me. I didn't want her to be doing this solely for our family. Elena also needed to be doing this for herself, or some part of her may grow to regret her decision. As my hand moved away, she continued her signature, crossing the T in Gilbert with a flourish. Elena stood back, taking in the signed document, a mixture of unease and relief flashing across her face at equal speeds. I stepped behind her as Niklaus snapped the document up, gleefully waving it into the air almost mockingly. Placing my hand on her shoulder, I shot him an unimpressed look, which he promptly chose to ignore.
"Ah, the key to your death and my rebirth. What a lovely evening this has turned out to be," he said, folding the paper, his piercing gaze zeroing in on both of us in equal turn.
Elijah pressed against the bridge of his nose, brown eyes closing in exhaustion. He was tired to the core of Niklaus' antics. "Brother, do you not think gratitude is in order? Elena did just agree to your every wish," he said.
Niklaus placed the paper in the pocket of his dark gray jacket, shrugging. Elena turned her body so that her head could fall on my shoulder. I could sense her body and mind tiring by the minute.
"Not my every wish, besides, her thanks will come in the form of a potion that revives her," he said.
Elijah sighed, straightening his posture as he turned to Elena. "Forgive my brother, Miss. Gilbert. He forgets the manners once taught to him. I thank you for your contribution to breaking Niklaus free of his curse," Elijah said, bowing slightly.
Elena smiled and lifted her head long enough to nod in acceptance. Niklaus rolled his eyes and adjusted his jacket as he turned to the front door. "I can call for someone to take you home if you do not feel like driving Elandra," he said.
Wrapping my arm around Elena, I drug her forward. "I am okay to drive, Niklaus. I find I was too busy to drink or even eat much this evening," I said, narrowing my eyes at him as I passed.
Niklaus grinned, his cheeks dimpling cutely, and I huffed, annoyed by the way my stomach dipped. I would have to get that back under control. He could not simply dimple his way outta trouble. "Marcus!" Niklaus called, stepping onto the porch. The tall, spiky-haired blonde vampire from earlier in the night, appeared from the side of the house, his head lowered. My attention was focused on the way he kept his gaze on the ground, and I idly wondered if that was a part of the compulsion Niklaus no doubt used against his staff. "Take the doppelganger to her car," Niklaus stated. Marcus nodded, holding out his hand expectantly, fingers wiggling impatiently.
Elena sighed, gaze darting to mine irritably before she took Marcus's awaiting hand. "Again, it's Elena," she said, as she was led away.
Niklaus grinned, his expression shining with glee at the rise he was able to get out of Elena by simply refusing to use her given name. I stepped up beside him, watching Elena slip into the car, jumping slightly in surprise as Marcus shut the door behind her. "You know you'll have to start calling her Elena at some point. She isn't going anywhere. Besides, you at least owe her a modicum of respect," I said, inclining my head.
Niklaus sighed in disappointment, turning to me with a put-out expression on his face. "You expect too much of me, love, but if I must; I will be kinder to your doppelganger."
I could hear Elijah's familiar slow-paced footfall and glanced over Niklaus's shoulder to find him heading up the staircase, his head lowered. My brows furrowed in hurt confusion, but before I could question the act, Niklaus scooted over, his new position blocking my line of sight. "I do hope I'll be rewarded for this newfound kindness," he teased.
Elijah's departure temporarily forgotten, I chuckled, rolling my eyes. I placed my palm against his cheek, running my nails along his stubble; his eyes closed momentarily, his breathing evening out as his body relaxed against mine. "Thank you for acting human, Niklaus; I can't imagine how difficult it will be for you," I said, leaning forward to kiss the bottom of his chin, before stepping away.
His eyes popped open and he took hold of my waist, pulling me back against him. "Do not tease me, Elandra."
His eyes heated with carnal warning, and I grinned, wrapping my arms around his neck. "If I remember correctly, you always loved the chase," I said.
A deep rumble started in his chest and he lowered his nose to my skin, inhaling deeply. I leaned my head back as he started to travel my clavicle and up toward the side of my neck, where he brushed his teeth against my skin. "I could claim you right now if I wanted to. No one could stop me," he said, his elevated breath rushing against my sensitive flesh. His grip on me tightened and without warning, he pulled back, stepping away from me. His eyes were dark rubies, shadowed in veins, and his incisors were elongated. "But I think I'll save that for when my curse is broken. Yet another thing for us to look forward to," he said, his smile turned predatory.
I stood on unsteady feet as I tried to make sense of what just happened. I knew the customs of werewolves but had never thought myself a part of them. Hearing Niklaus speak of claiming had opened my eyes to a whole 'nother set of issues. I couldn't possibly be his mate, I was cursed for God's sake. If he claimed me and then I died, he would be forced to live through the death of his mate, which can drive a werewolf to madness. I brushed my bangs outta my eyes, ignoring the smug look that took over his face, him confusing my shock for something else entirely. With extreme difficulty, I pushed the idea of mating bonds to the very back of my mind. It was a problem for a different time, place, or version of myself to deal with. I forced a neutral expression and crossed my arms over my chest to appear calm and collected.
"I could stop you, Niklaus. No one will force a bond on me. We would discuss something like that before it happened," I said, ending his idea of a sudden bonding before it could be fully born. I had to protect him. Niklaus's brows furrowed in confusion, his expression flickering between anger and fear of rejection. I stepped closer, placing my hands on his arms before he could work himself into needless anger. "Listen, I want to be with you for as long as I'm able; I always have, but I will never be okay with my decisions being taken from me. All I'm asking is that we discuss stuff like that together; that's what people in relationships are supposed to do, my love," I said, smiling up at him.
Niklaus placed his forefinger and thumb against my chin, tilting my head to better see into my eyes. "We will share eternity; nothing will part us now that I've found you. Once the ritual is finished, I will break your curse and make you immortal."
I stared into his perfect eyes, memorizing every variation of color that I could find, the grays and different shades of blue. He was so sure, they always were, and as I forced one of my ever used smiles reserved specifically for reassuring those who wanted to save me, I found myself filled with deadly hope. "I believe you, Nik. If anyone can help me, it's you."
His smug smile took over again as he leaned forward, placing a kiss against my lips, but before it could grow, a blaring car horn enveloped the quiet air. Wincing, I stepped back, glancing at the doorway. "Sounds like Elena is tired of waiting for me. I better get home; it's been a long night."
With a sour expression emanating displeasure, he took my hand, leading me to the porch. "Do tell your…sister that I would prefer she learn the meaning of patience before we next meet."
I couldn't stop the laugh that worked its way from my throat as his scowl turned into a pout the moment I released his hand, stepping off the porch. "I will see you tomorrow, Nik. It's only a few hours away and just think, by this time tomorrow you'll have your freedom," I said, my eyes widening with excitement.
His attitude swiftly changed, mood turning on its axis at the reminder of what tomorrow would bring. "See you tomorrow, love," he said, lowering his chin as a farewell.
I started toward the car, and my mood lightened, but as I approached, a lightbulb went off in my head, and I spun around, bouncing on the heels of my feet. Niklaus' brows rose in amusement as I raised my hands animatedly. "Oh, oh! I almost forgot. I got you a gift. It's in the tomb under Fells church. I think it would be very poetic to use it in your ritual, but ultimately it's up to you," I said with a wicked grin.
Niklaus laughed, his face lighting up with merriment as he shook his head at my antics. "Oh, I do look forward to discovering what it is, naughty little witch," he said.
With a wave, I started to turn, my gaze rising to catch a glimpse of Elijah standing at a window on the second floor, wearing a mask of dejection. I smiled up at him, but he simply turned, backing away. I headed to the car, my good mood rapidly departing.
It had not taken long for Elena to break one of the terms of her contract, and no matter how hard I fought with her, she was determined to do things her way. So with a shake of my head, I was forced to follow her into the lion's den. Just as I had expected, things took a turn for the worse the moment we stepped through the front door. Why Elena thought it best that we told the Salvatores to their face that the ritual was happening at nightfall, I'd never know, but for her safety, I stuck to her side. I just hoped she could handle whatever Niklaus chose as punishment.
"Okay, let me get this straight, what you're trying to tell us is you've signed your life away without consulting anyone else?" Stefan asked, his face twisted with horror.
Damon had long since given up trying to string together coherent words and was now angrily pacing around the sitting room, his face contorted with fury. I continued to sit silently, a glass of scotch in hand. Everyone in the room, aside from Caroline and Elena, had already let me know my opinions were pure trash, so why try? Elena nodded, her eyes red and tired; the day was already wearing on her, and it was only ten in the morning. I tried to insist that she sleep in but she had demanded that we start early, seeing as she was due to die when the moon rose; I couldn't fight her there.
"I'm not sure whose opinion you wanted me to get, Stefan. No, I'm not eighteen, but that's only by a little over a month. Mentally and emotionally I am an adult; I can make my own decisions. You can't decide that I'm too young now that it's beneficial to you," Elena said.
Stefan winced, his face paling at what she was implying. Elena wasn't taking prisoners, and frankly, I did not blame her; we were both done with the Salvatores and their bullshit. Caroline chuckled, leaning against the far wall near the bar, where Alaric was pouring himself another drink, his cheeks puffed out as he exhaled, shaking his head at Elena's harshness. Jeremy sat forward in the armchair to our right, Bonnie was perched daintily on the armrest. "Me! You could have asked me, or Jenna; your family. Do we not matter to you anymore, Elena? Are you just going to walk out that door and die? Were mom and dad not enough?" Jeremy yelled, his lips wet with saliva.
Bonnie placed her hand on his arm, her fingers tinting white with the strength of her grip, and I grasped my glass tightly, pulling back my anger. Elena swallowed roughly, closing her eyes as she regained her emotional strength before she spoke. Opening her eyes, she stared our brother down. "Jer, of course, you and Jenna matter; I'm doing this to keep you and everyone else I care about safe." Jeremy scoffed, cutting Elena off, and her soft gaze turned into a heated glare. She slammed her hand down on the coffee table, scaring those around her. Jeremy jumped, his expression flickering between shock and surprise, and Bonnie slipped from the armrest, her green eyes wide. Damon's frantic pacing stopped, and he turned to watch Elena with cold eyes. "Listen here Jeremy Lee Gilbert! You may not want to hear the truth, but it is what it is. I am the doppelganger, and because Katherine decided to run, this is now my problem to deal with. I will not let what happened to her family happen to mine. Elara and I have created a foolproof plan to protect all of us, myself included. When I wake up tonight perfectly okay, I demand a full apology; for the both of us," Elena demanded, pointing her bony finger in Jeremy's face.
My brows rose with surprise and I lifted my glass to hide the pleased smile that was beginning to form. Jeremy squinted his brown eyes, his jaw tightening in anger as he stared Elena down, fisted hands laid atop his knees. "I will apologize to that witch when hell freezes over," he spat. His gaze dropped to the floor and I watched with interest as his foot tapped in endless melody.
I clicked my tongue, nodding in acceptance, and swallowed deeply to keep my tears at bay. Elena's hand darted out to take hold of my knee, her grip tight. "I can make that happen, Jeremy; don't test me. If I have to make it rain freaking flying pigs, I will," she said.
Caroline snorted, pulling back the heavy drapes to dramatically glance out the window. "I wouldn't test her, Jeremy, besides, if she doesn't get the apology outta you, I will. One way or another. I have sat back and listened to the way you've spoken to my BFF long enough, and to be honest, I'm sick of it," she said, crossing her arms.
Bonnie stood to her feet, hands raised placatingly. "Okay, you guys, he gets it. We are just worried about you Elena, and rightfully so. You are asking a lot of us right now. You expect us to just let you leave and go off to face your death," she said, her expression filled with loving confusion.
I felt my heart twist painfully. Every person in this room loved Elena in one way or another, be it a healthy love or one born from obsession, they still loved her. As I looked at each face, I could see that love, and it was only matched by fear. I had felt that sort of fear many times before. It wasn't a fun feeling. Before Elena could go off on another tirade, I slowly stood to my feet, ignoring the hateful glares. My hands started to tremble and I could feel my face begin to heat. I folded my hands across my chest to hide the tremors. No matter the years I've spent — on and off — this earth, I would always hate speaking in front of large groups. I cleared my throat and kept my gaze firmly located on the chest of each person.
"Listen, I know I'm the last person you want to hear from but you've already had your go at Elena, and we both know there's nothing left for her to say. I understand that you are all scared for someone you love, and as Bonnie said, rightfully so." Caroline took a few steps forward, her dark blue eyes painfully understanding, while Jeremy took his seat, still refusing to look at me, his jaw set tight. Bonnie placed her hand atop his shoulder and sat back down on the armrest beside him. Alaric practically inhaled his bourbon, his back to me, and Damon stood next to Stefan near the unlit fireplace, both of their expressions were cold and fathomless. "I have tried to explain to you that I am not the enemy, despite how you feel about my history with the Original family, but none of you are ready or willing to hear that, and with everything going on, I can understand." Elena scoffed, crossing her legs rather hatefully. I ushered for her to remain calm, and turned back around. "I have a potion that will work to revive her. She will wake up tonight none the worse for wear; I swear. Afterward, we agreed that she will donate blood monthly, just as she would to the Red Cross. The Original family will be leaving Mystic Falls and that will be that," I said, widening my stance and waving my hands out beside me.
Damon stepped forward, a smirk of fury twisting his normally attractive face. "And will you be disappearing with them Elandra, because I doubt the Hybrid will just up and leave you behind?"
At that, Elena's head snapped up to follow my wavering stance, her eyes narrowed. I glared at Damon with malice, I had hoped no one would question me. The truth was, I didn't know what Niklaus's plans were for after the ritual, but what I did know was, that I wouldn't be around for them. I doubted he would stick around after my funeral. With as much hatred as I could muster, I stared into Damon's eyes. "When you first came back to town, I jokingly asked if you had forgotten my birthday, and you responded that you hadn't. Well, you may or may not remember that I am no longer Elandra Miller, which means the birthday you celebrated is no longer mine. I am Elara Gilbert now, and in this life, I share a birthday with my fraternal twin sister Elena. July 22nd; we will be turning 18 in 40 days," I simply said.
I watched with horrific amusement as the anvil dropped in different ways around the room, there were pained gasps and nearly silent sobs, but Damon's gaze remained locked with my own, his cold eyes not showing an ounce of pain or sadness, and I felt a piece of me die early. Our stare-down was ended by a loud banging on the heavy oak front door, and I turned away. I was surprised to find that Stefan's cold expression had faded, and I was left with a clear sadness that bordered on sorrow. It shocked me that the person who seemed to be saddened by my impending death was not the one I would have spent my life with. I watched him with intrigue as he passed me to answer the door. Elena took hold of my shoulder and tugged me toward a crying Caroline, who I swiftly wrapped in a tight hug, trying as I might to make out her muffled words in between sobs. "You-you c-cant die! I n-need you! Why would you do this to me?" she said, her nose red and leaking snot all over my shirt.
Elena wrapped her arms around both of us, her eyes red and puffy as she sniffled. "What if we just don't have a birthday?" she said, her voice croaky. "I don't mind staying seventeen"
I laughed, unable to stop myself, and laid my head atop Caroline's blonde curls. "That's not really how it works, Ellie. The curse knows the moment this body turns eighteen. You see, I'm not allowed to age beyond that."
Elena scoffed, her sigh turning into a makeshift growl. "That's bullshit! If I ever see that witch I'm gonna kill her."
"Not if I get to her first," Caroline said, her fingers scratching at my back as she pulled me closer.
I heard a heavy rustling, like the sound of boots on the carpet, and released Caroline in time to find Tyler staring Damon down, his knees bent and eyes narrowed. Mason was standing directly behind him with two of his pack, Hannah and Gavin. I hastily stepped into the fray and lifted my hand into the air, snapping my fingers and whistling to draw attention. I glared at the wolves. "What are you doing here?"
Mason stepped around Tyler, his posture straight, and he lowered his head in respect. "I hadn't heard from you this morning, and when I tried to call, you didn't answer. So I decided to track your cell. When we saw you were here, after the contract stated you weren't supposed to be…" he glanced behind me at Elena with slanted eyes before turning back to me. "We were worried," he said.
I crossed my arms and sighed, shaking my head in annoyance. It was seriously dangerous for Mason to be making decisions like that on his own. If he had come here and Niklaus had seen him, that would have brought about a whole set of questions I was not ready to answer. "I appreciate the concern, but next time, wait for me to call you. We're fine. Elena wanted to explain things to them face to face. She is adult enough to handle what comes of it," I said, glancing over my shoulder with a raised brow.
Elena looked at her feet, shuffling around nervously. I could already see that she expected me to save her from whatever would come of this; she would soon learn there were some things even I couldn't save her from. "Ugh, would you look at this, you're here an hour and already we've got fleas," Damon said, brushing off his clothes with disgust. "But I guess I can expect nothing less from someone who rolls around with dogs."
Elena bolted forward and was stopped without hesitation by Mason. He took her by the middle, spinning her around and placing her back on her feet to my right. She grumbled, readjusting her t-shirt, her face red. I nodded in thanks and rolled my eyes at Damon's childish outburst, turning to look at Stefan. "Elena and I have said our piece, all we ask is that you all stay away from the ritual space tonight, for everyone's safety." I looked at Caroline with a sad smile. "I need you to stay here too, Care." Immediately, Caroline balked, her mouth opening and closing like a fish.
"But I can help, I can!" she said.
I placed my hand on her elbow and rubbed a small circle along her skin. "I know, but for my peace of mind, stay here with the others," I said.
Caroline reluctantly nodded, her lips pursed into a pout. I reached out and took hold of Elena's hand, pulling her toward the front door. Hannah and Gavin headed outside, while Mason and Tyler stood by my side. I was glad to be leaving, I was through with the judgmental stares. As we passed, Damon stepped in front of us, blocking our path, his gaze firmly sealed on Elena. I felt the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end, but before I could make sense of what was happening, I felt his hand press against my chest, and the cool air assaulted my face as I was flung backward. My head collided with Mason's hard-toned shoulder, and I felt his arms wrap around me protectively, I could feel the vibration from his angry snarl travel down my spine, and it snapped me back into reality. I looked up as I was lifted back onto my feet to find Damon holding his wrist to Elena's mouth, forcefully feeding her his blood. Elena's face was smeared with red, her hands fighting against his tight grip, her body bowed backward in stress. Stefan flew forward, ripping Damon away, his face morphed into something terrifying. He tossed Damon across the room, destroying the bookcase entirely when his body tumbled to the floor. I ran to meet Elena where she fell, sobbing as she aggressively wiped at her face. Her hands rushed across her skin in a robotic motion, her eyes wide with horror, and her body trembling. I took hold of her and rubbed her arms as soothingly as possible, trying not to scare her as her body came down from its adrenaline high. Caroline joined us, her blue eyes round with shock and anger. I could see Alaric head past Stefan and Damon, probably hoping he could defuse the fight between them. Jeremy and Bonnie stood beside us, shocked by what had happened but saying nothing. It wasn't hard to see that as much as they didn't agree with how Damon had handled the situation, they didn't entirely disagree with what he had done. Mason and Tyler stood guard around us, their bodies rigid with stress. Elena slowly rocked, her expression angry and fearful as she looked up at me.
"He fed me his blood, Ellie. I-I'm useless now. What are we going to do?" she begged, her face almost childish in its fear.
I felt my stomach sink as I began to truly realize the implications of Damon's actions, but instead of showing Elena my fear, I smiled, placing my palms atop her cheeks. "You are never useless, Lena. I will take care of this; don't worry. I always have a backup plan," I said.
Elena exhaled with relief, her eyes closing as her head fell onto her knees. "Of course you do. Thank God. I am so sorry I made you come here. You were right; this was a bad idea," she said.
I chuckled, inwardly agreeing while I struggled with how to fix her and Damon's fuck up. Caroline helped her stand, holding her elbow as she led her away. I followed after them, my head hung low and Mason at my back, Tyler walking ahead of me directly behind Caroline.
"I wonder how your Hybrids ritual will work now that she has my blood in her system? At least we all know she won't be dying so that your lover can have what he wants," Damon darkly chuckled.
Elena tried to yank her elbow from Caroline's grip but was tugged forward and out the front door. Stefan placed his hand against Damon's chest as I stepped closer, and I wanted to laugh at the strange turn of events. How odd was it that Stefan now thought I needed him to protect me from Damon? "The ritual will still happen. All you've done is create an obstacle. I want you to remember these past few weeks and all you have done because all of that I could have forgiven, but not this, Damon, not this. Goodbye," I said.
As I walked out the front door, I could just make out Damon's voice in the wake of my steps. "I don't want your forgiveness."
Sneakily, I slipped outta the house, leaving Caroline and Elena to have lunch with Aunt Jenna, who was starting to suspect that something was going on, and headed toward Lockwood manor. I knew Nikaus would be out preparing for the ritual, so that left Elijah home alone, and at the moment, he was the one person in all of Mystic Falls who could help me. Hastily, I slipped out of my car and headed for the front door, my knuckles beating rapidly against the dark brown oak door. I rotated my weight from leg to leg as I impatiently waited. After only a few short minutes, the door swung open, and I was met with the curious brown eyes of Elijah Mikaelson. "We need to talk, 'Lijah. I have a problem," I said.
The sun was slowly inching toward the horizon as I led Elena out the front door, a duffle bag slung over my right shoulder. She had been silent for the last hour, her mouth sealed shut apart from the nearly silent sobs that she tried to hide. She was afraid to wake up a member of the undead, but no matter how I tried to convince her that I had already put the backup plan into place, her fear got the better of her. With everything she was going through, I allowed her space to process however she needed, and pretended to not hear her tears. I walked around the car, opened the passenger door, and waited patiently as she zombie walked her way to my side, slipping inside, her doe eyes were ruby red and her face blotchy. I maneuvered my way to the other side, and hopped in, starting up the engine. Backing out of the driveway, I headed toward the highway and the mountain path that would take us to the ritual sight. Darkness had invaded by the time we arrived, and I helped Elena from the car, guiding her along the rocky terrain. As we ascended the hill, I could see the orange glow of a fire, and my lungs burned as my breathing accelerated. Elena stumbled in fear, and I reached down, pulling her up, and dragging her forward. It seemed I would be forced to lead her from here on out. The moment we entered the clearing, I could make out three large rings of otherworldly fire; the shape almost reminded me of the silhouette of Mickey Mouse. I blinked away the odd image and recognized the tall slim form of Greta Martin standing alone by a stone altar in the center of the field, where she had placed a large stone bowl for ingredients. Her showy dresses were absent, replaced by tight jeans and a leather jacket; my eyes narrowed as she watched us approach with a smirk of superiority.
"Ah, thank you for bringing the final ingredient," she said, motioning toward the three large circles of fire. "Place her in the final circle."
Her flickering gesture finally alerted me to the two bodies lying in the circles; none other than Katerina Petrova and Mason's previous alpha Jules. It seems Elijah did as I asked and hid her away until she was needed. I found I had zero sympathies for either of the women bound for Niflheim. Elena gasped as she saw a replica of herself unconscious only a few feet away, and I gently prodded her forward. "It's okay; it's what needs to happen, Elena. She is a danger to everyone we love. She will never stop messing with your life. It's a part of the doppelganger curse. There can't be two of you alive at once without loads of drama," I explained.
Elena simply nodded, fine with allowing me to handle things from here on out. She wasn't in any frame of mind to function at the moment. The fire lowered at our approach, and Elena stepped into the circle, her entire body trembling. I felt my heart twist at the sight of her and placed my hands on her shoulders. My fingers glowed a deep electric blue and Elena's shoulders began to illuminate as my magic flowed from me, sinking into her. I watched with satisfaction as her shoulders slumped and she exhaled with relief, her eyes closing in thanks. I slowly inched outta the circle while she was still calm and buzzing with my magic, and backed away, heading toward Greta. "Does she realize what that does to her?" Greta asked upon my approach.
I blinked in confusion, rubbing at my irritated wrist. "What do you mean?'
Greta huffed in annoyance. "I know the stories of your kind. When you do magic, a piece of you is always left behind. You're not like us normal witches, you use your core, your soul, to create magic. When you use it on someone, you leave a trace, a piece of yourself behind inside of them. It's disgusting," she said, her nose wrinkled with distaste.
I chuckled at the way misinformation spread like wildfire and shook my head. "We don't leave pieces of ourselves lying around like hair wherever we go, Greta. When we cast on someone we do leave an imprint, but it's like our own personal scent that only a fellow witch would even recognize; we're not infecting anyone," I said, laughing.
Greta moved the bowl around on the altar, her face scrunched up with repulsion. "I still find it utterly repugnant to all but brand people," she said.
With a deep sigh, I continued to rub my wrist, staring at her with sadness. "Do you miss your family, Greta? Would you ever consider going home?" I asked.
Greta swiftly turned to me, her expression harsh. "I left my family for bigger and better things. They don't understand what real power is; I can gain the kind of power you cannot begin to imagine at Klaus's side. I don't need family," she said.
At her words, the burn in my wrist vanished instantly, and I felt my vow to her father fade away. She was safe, well, as safe as someone working for Niklaus could ever be. I had done all I could for her and her family. "Good luck with all that, Greta," I said.
The sound of crumbling rocks could be heard, and from the path in front of us, Niklaus and Elijah appeared. "Hello, my lovelies. Are we ready?" Niklaus asked.
Greta smiled widely, her head bouncing as an answer, and Niklaus laughed as he stepped toward me. "Elandra, you're looking particularly tasty this evening," he said as he reached out, pulling me against his chest.
I rolled my eyes, ignoring the glare I could feel searing into my back, and shook my head at his antics. "I am wearing jeans and a t-shirt, Nik."
He planted his nose in my air, inhaling deeply. "Mmm, you would look delectable wearing nothing but my bedsheets, so what's your point?" he whispered into my ear.
I pushed away from him, smacking his arm with a guffaw of surprise. "Get your Hybrid ass decursed; naughty man," I said.
With a bright genuine smile, Niklaus headed toward Greta, the air around him filled with hope. My smile dropped as I approached Elijah; I stood silently by his side, watching Greta and Niklaus talk over the night's events. "Have you told anyone?" Elijah asked.
I released a sad huff of air, shaking my head. "No, I didn't want to burden anyone, besides, you know what would happen if I did."
"He would stop the ritual," Elijah answered, looking down at me, his expression understanding.
"Yes, he would. I cannot have that. We have waited too long for this; it needs to be over. I can do this Elijah," I said.
Elijah's face fell and he looked away, his stiff posture faltering. "What if…" he stopped, unable to finish his sentence.
I lowered my head, kicking a few pebbles around. "All I ask is that you take care of everyone in my absence, Elijah. I know that is a terrible burden to place on you, brother, but you're the only person I can trust to protect everyone I hold dear," I said, looking up at him, my eyes taking in his agonized face. "Just don't forget that includes you."
Elijah's breath caught and he turned away from me, walking toward Elena, who was still trapped in her fiery cage. I held tight to my bravery as Niklaus reached into his pocket and pulled free the moonstone, his fingers brushing against its smooth milky surface. "I've got the moonstone. I spent 500 years looking for this. I hate to part with it," he said, as Greta moved to retrieve it.
With a deep reverence that I nearly rolled my eyes at, Greta lifted her gaze toward the sky. "The moon has passed its apex. Remember everything you need to do?" she asked.
Niklaus nodded, a buzzed smile still affixed to his face. "I remember," he said.
At that, I did roll my eyes; as if he would forget. Greta dropped the moonstone into the bowl, and bright orange flames shot up, the sparks destroying the moonstone, and to my embarrassment, I jumped in surprise. I giggled lightly at my reaction, catching the eye of Niklaus who smiled warmly at me. Greta closed her eyes, her lips moving in quick practiced movements as she started chanting an old spell in perfect Latin. With deep barely noticeable breath, Niklaus approached the rings of fire. The first circle he stepped in front of belonged to the werewolf Jules, and I narrowed my eyes, old anger seeping to the surface. Jules began to roll onto her side as the pain of her subdued change took over, and with an upward glance, she looked at Elena. "Everything I did…I was trying to help Tyler," she said.
Hurriedly I rushed forward, images of an injured Caroline taking over my vision. Before Niklaus could step past her fiery prison, I leaned close to the flames, my eyes raking over her sweaty pain-filled body. "Everything you did, you did for yourself. Don't try to take the high road now, Jules. Your hatred blinded you and now you'll suffer the consequences. Tell Brady I said hello," I said.
Niklaus shot me a heated, wicked grin as he stepped through the fire, and Elena turned away. I walked over to her, keeping her gaze. "I'm sorry if that bothered you," I said.
Her deep brown eyes took me in for all I was, and for a moment, I thought I would see the old disgust she once harbored for me and my magic, but all I saw was acceptance. "She hurt Caroline…and Damon. I get it," she said.
I wanted to hug her but was held back by Greta's magical flames, so instead, I settled for mouthing a simple 'I love you'. She smiled in thanks, and we both watched as Niklaus carried Jules's blood-covered heart back to the stone bowl. Greta continued chanting the spell as Niklaus lifted the heart above the bowl, squeezing the blood into the flames. The glow of the fire brightened, and Niklaus's expression intensified. "Does that mean it's working?" he asked.
Greta slightly smiled, stopping her chant to nod and answer the Hybrid's tense question. "It's working."
Niklaus started back toward the circles, his next step Katerina. I inched closer to her circle to find her still unconscious. As he approached, the flames dispersed and he entered her small ring. For a silent moment, he simply looked at her. I wasn't sure what he was thinking, and there was no way I would intrude. Katerina had meant something to both him and Elijah and I couldn't fault him for that. The heart is a mysterious thing. Finally, he nudged her leg with his foot and she started to awaken, her eyes darting around in fear. She sat up, holding her weight with one hand, and looked around, taking in her surroundings and the trouble she found herself in.
"Welcome to the ritual, Katerina," Niklaus tauntingly said.
Slowly, she stood to her feet, and without warning, attempted to bolt toward the treeline, only to find herself smacking off of a wall of fire. Niklaus laughed, his face alight with humor, and he turned to look at me. "What a good gift this turned out to be. Thank you, love. Remind me to give you whatever you want for your birthday," he said. "Apart from breaking your curse," he added, with another laugh.
Elena looked between us and shook her head, an odd chuckle falling from her lips. "You two are so weird, no wonder you fit so well together," she said.
Niklaus reached down, lifting Katerina by her shoulder, and smiled. "Thank you, Elena. How kind of you to say," he said, idly twisting Katerina around to face him.
Elena's mouth fell open in shock and her eyelashes fluttered in confusion. Niklaus watched her, amusement dimpling his cheeks before he looked down at the struggling doppelganger. "Just imagine, Katerina, you could be in Elena's place had you been brave enough to stay, but instead, you will die." Katerina looked over his shoulder at Elijah, her eyes pleading, but he simply looked away. "Do not look at my brother, you do not deserve to ask him for a single thing. There is no forgiveness here," he said. He placed his fingertips against her ribcage, pressing hard as he dug into her chest. Katerina screamed in pain, struggling to break free of his grip. There wasn't a single ounce of mercy in the way he yanked her heart from her chest, and his eyes were cold as he watched her tumble to his feet. Katerina Patrova was no more.
He stepped from the circle, Katerina's heart in his hand. I stepped up next to him and looked down at the heart that belonged to someone I once knew. "Are you okay?" I asked.
There was deep gratitude in his blue eyes as he stared down at me, his lips twitching into a smile. "Yes, love, I'm fine. She meant nothing to me."
I watched him go, and looked over at Elijah, tilting my head in question. His weak smile was enough for me to understand that he would be fine with some time. She had meant more to him than she had Niklaus. Poor Elijah had the worst taste in women. The trees at the top of the hill rustled, branches snapping with the weight of heavy footsteps, and Niklaus's head snapped up. "Well, well. I don't recall you being on the guest list."
Stefan ambled down the hill, his gaze darting over to find Elena, who was rolling her eyes, hands on her hips. His expression shifted to horror when his eyes fell on Katerina's body. "I see you've discovered my vampire sacrifice. She was a gift from Elandra. She certainly did not escape me this time," Niklaus said, laughter tinting his words. He lifted Katerina's heart above the stone bowl, squeezing hard to release every drop of blood; the fire roared with acceptance.
Stefan's gaze shot to me accusingly and I rolled my eyes, mirroring Elena's posture. "Who did you want him to sacrifice, Stefan? Jenna, Caroline, Jeremy? I don't think so. Katherine was deserving, and it was rather poetic don't ya think? Besides, it's better for everyone that she's gone," I said.
Elena's brows furrowed in thought, and she nodded in agreement. Stefan hid his true feelings behind a practiced expression and looked at Niklaus. "I'm here to talk," he said.
My skin prickled with unease, and I glanced over my shoulder at Elijah, whose face remained a stoic mask. If Stefan revealed what Damon had done, then my plan would go to shit. Damon. My mind spun with revelation, and I twisted around, scanning our surroundings. Behind Greta, who was still chanting endlessly, was Damon. I lifted my hand and flicked my fingers, sending him spiraling through the air. With another wave, I wrapped Greta in a protective barrier. I looked at Stefan in anger. "You will not ruin this. For once, please listen to me!" I shouted.
Niklaus snarled in fury and with unimaginable speed, spun around Stefan, staking him in the back with a large tree branch. As Stefan fell disgracefully to the ground, Niklaus snapped his neck, leaving him unconscious. Damon stood to his feet and rushed forward, his face a dark mask of vengeance. He sped toward Niklaus, but before he could get there, Elijah was in front of him, his hand around his throat. With a twist of his wrist, Elijah snapped Damon's neck, and he fell gracelessly to the ground. Niklaus brushed off his shirt, nodding in thanks at his brother. and glancing up at Greta, he waved his hand nonchalantly. "Whenever you're ready," he said.
Taking a deep breath, Elena fisted her hands as the fire around her faded from view. Niklaus approached her slowly, his face calm. He held out his hand, palm up. "It's time."
Elena reached out and accepted his offer, allowing him to guide her to the altar. I followed behind them, with Elijah a few feet away. He knew that I would require his assistance shortly. Once they reached the altar, Niklaus took her face in his hands and looked deep into her eyes. "Thank you, Elena," he softly said.
Brushing her hair away, Niklaus bared his fangs and gently sunk them into her neck. Elena stared blankly over his shoulder and into my eyes as he drained her life away. I tearily kept her gaze, my own filled with love. I felt exhaustion seep into my bones but fought it, planting my feet firmly against the ground. She began to struggle as the remainder of her strength started to wane, but Niklaus simply held her close, one hand on the back of her head. As the light left her eyes, I felt my skin getting cold, the tips of my fingers numbing against the warm night air. I could no longer feel the earth under my feet as I fell backward, luckily, I never met the ground, instead, a warm set of hands guided me down. I struggled to take in my next few breaths, and my ears rang as I watched the world fade from view. I kept my gaze trained on the inky night sky, I could feel a soft warmth running along my skin, and I focused on that. The last thing I remember as I took my final breath, was the sound of a sorrowful howl ripping through the silent air.
