"Aang are you sure that this is a good idea?" Katara asked
"Why not? It seems perfectly normal to me" the Avatar replied.
"Guh" Toph said as she hugging onto her student at the moment.
Katara and Sokka then looked to him for the translation of what Toph said.
"She said good" Aang told the water tribe siblings.
There was then something that got Katara steaming as that was a seat even she had been allow to take on normal pace.
"Why are you even allow her to sit up there with you in the first place?" his waterbending master asked her
"She scared as she truly blind up here on Appa regardless of if he flying or not" Aang said.
"I was asking her, Aang. You can not say that what she meant as she did not even open her mouth that time" the Southern Water Tribe girl replied.
"So did I say anything wrong?" he asked the girl in question herself who merely shook her head.
"Then let me up there too" Katara said starting to climb up out the sky bison's saddle and on to his head.
However the water tribe girl was stopped by her older brother.
"What are you doing, brother?" Katara asked
"We are about to land so that probably not a good idea. How about you just attempt this next time" Sokka told her
He said this in a more of tone of it being a suggestion rather then telling her straight out. It was not because when she spoke in that matter where he swore the air around her would seem colder for a second.
After landing and getting off Appa…
"Here" Aang said handing Toph over some gloves and pair of socks with the soles cut off them.
Taking them the badgermole girl looked them over wonder what she was suppose to do with them. She managed to understand her own clothes now. She could take them off on and put them back on almost completely on her own now. There were times that she needed help still as she was not fully use to changing her clothes again. Having spend seven years in the same outfit and her memory loss cause this result.
"Ah" Toph called out holding the them towards the airbender not really knowing what to do with them.
Yet before he could do anything Katara appeared leading Toph off to the side.
"Let me handle this, Aang" she told him.
"So what the deal with those anyway as she never wore them around us, so why have her do that now" Sokka inquired.
"They stand out as her hands and feet are darker tone then the rest of her body. Have not really seen a earthbender like that before" he said 'Also the fact that her skin is pale in first place leaves me wonder if she was from a wealthy family'
Maybe this was just from what he had expected himself but those of the Earth Kingdom that were doing pretty well for themselves had light complexion then everyone else. So anything that made Toph stand out less the better as he already attracted attention wherever he went in the first place. Being the only known airbender left in the world and the avatar on top of that.
*Look* Toph said gaining his attention to show off her gloves and sock that she had help putting on.
"Very nice. Anyway be good Appa and we will be right back" he told his old buddy
Thus Aang and the others head into the town where they where their supplies would be refilled as they were starting to run low. Now while this was not any big deal for the most of the group their was one member that stood there in shock as it was their first time going to a town in seven years (the first time in their recallable memory)
Toph felt so many others that she was starting to find it hard to focus on where she was going bumping in to Aang as result.
"Are you okay?" he asked curiously
Nodding she then started sniffing the air as some smell caught her nose's attention. Bolting off in that direction she found herself standing in front of a cabbage cart filled with the vegetable. It was causing her mouth to water a little as she look at them.
"Hello there would you like some?" the cabbage merchant asked to her.
She did not respond as she merely jumped on to the cart and started stuffing her face with the man's product.
"MY CABBAGE!" the merchant cried out as the blind girl continued devour them until something else had caught her noise's attention and she ran off to where that place was.
This process repeated itself as Toph went through the entire market place eating what ever she could get her hands on. When someone tried to get in the way between herself and the food she wanted she would lash out at them with her bending. Nothing to seriously hurt the person but enough to immobilize from following or stopping her.
"There we finally managed to corner you…you…thief" an angry fruit merchant said.
"How do you plan to pay for all the stuff you eat without paying. We should have you arrested or maybe your parents for not teaching you any better" butcher demand.
"MY CABBAGE! WHY!" the merchant of said product cried.
Toph did not respond as she just held her food that she had not finished yet closer. This was hers she found it and they were trying to steal her food. It was just lying there and even if it was there they were stupid to leave it out that without properly protecting or having the ability to looking over it all. That what her parents(her badgermole ones) always taught her as if she was going to save food then make sure others, outside the family, could not get to it.
As the merchant closed in on her she was getting ready to defend herself. Yet before even one could make a move Aang used a gust of air to cause the two of them to back off. At the same time causing Toph to lose some of her food that she was holding.
"That thief stole from us, avatar. We need you to capture that kid over there" the merchants demand almost all at once.
"No Toph we can not share that food as its not yours" Aang told her as she tired offering him some.
"Yes it was lying around without them really guarding that well but still that not how things are done here" he said in respond to claims of way she did not do anything wrong.
The merchants were soon forgotten as the two got into a shout match where only one of them(Aang) could be understood. The girl in this who had stolen from them all was speaking in manner none of them understood confusing them more. Whenever they tried to get in the middle of things they get yelled at by BOTH Aang and Toph who continued to argue over this. At one point Toph even jammed some her stolen food in Aang's mouth. Which he quickly spit out as it was dirty from being on the ground until then.
"What did I tell you about giving me food from off the ground as your stomach can handle it just find but that not normally how we eat" he told her.
The water tribe sibling appeared having finally found the two younger members of their group wrestling on the group by a pile of food that Toph was busy trying to eat while Aang was trying to stop her. Katara at this point did not prove to be much help. She herself started yelling at both of them, taking neither side as she was anger at the both of them for various reasons. Thus when merchants tried to get her to stop she just yell at them before going back to trying split Aang and Toph herself.
Leaving Sokka the only one that was able to explain things about how the blind bender(yeah he even had explain that as the merchants did not know) had been raise by animals thus did not really have sense of how things worked in towns anymore or how she need to pay for the food before she could eat it.
Eventually the argument shifted as rather then it being a three way argument it became just two way. Where now just Katara and Aang were arguing about how Toph should have been left behind to which Aang was against. While the girl in question was just enjoying what left of her food.
Probably goes without saying that the group never did get the supplies they came for as they were asked to promptly leave town. All the while Aang and Katara continuing to go at while Sokka sighed and kept Toph from snatching anymore food on the way out.
However the attention they drew got the someone that literally dropped everything they were doing at the mere sight of Toph and their own blood then began to boil as result them seeing her.
