JONES HOME

NIGHTIE'S POV

I had an average day at school, with my friends asking about Peru while we were at lunch. I know some of the other kids listening to my story didn't believe it, nor did they believe anything from India, but I didn't care. I knew they were true, and my friends believed me. That was all that mattered. When I got home, I sat down in Dad's recliner and layed it down all the way. I did this to tease my father everytime he came home from his job teach Archeology at Marshall College. When I grew old enough, I wanted to go there to go to his classes. I heard Dad pull into the driveway, and he got out of his car, and came into the house. "Nightingale, get out of my chair. We need to talk about something." I was confused, and slightly concerned. Usually Dad would pretend to not know I was in his chair, and pretend to be upset when he 'found' me in it. But today was the first day he didn't. I walked into the kitchen and looked at him. He took off his fedora and kneeled down to be eye level with me. "Nightie darling, the US Government might give Daddy a important job to do. It's really dangerous." I nodded. "What is it they want you to find?" Dad sighed. "Well, I'm not supposed to tell you, but I will. Just as long as you promise to keep quiet." I put my hand over my heart. "I promise." I said. "Ok. Do you remember the Ark of the Covenant?" Dad asked me. I became completely speechless. The Ark of the Covenant?! The one that held the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments held by Moses?! I nodded. "Well, that's what they want." he said. "When do we leave?" I asked.

Dad sighed again. "That's the thing sweetie. We're not going. It's just me." I looked at him. "But I want to go too!" I said. Dad looked down. "I know, but this isn't a small, easy job. This is a big job, probably even bigger than the Sankara Stones." He looked at me, practically begging me to stay home. "But, I thought you said we were partners." I said. "We are, of the smaller jobs. I couldn't live with myself if anything happened to you." he said. I remembered when he was forced to drink the blood of the Kali. He completely changed into a Thugee, and even backhanded me. Even though I forgave him, and made sure he knew I loved him, he couldn't make eye contact with me for a long time. He didn't want to see me hurt. I was about to say something when there was a knock on the door. Dad went to go answer it. It was Marcus Brody. "Indy, Nightie. How are you?" he greeted us. "Hi Marcus!" I cried. Marcus was like a second father to me. Back before last year, Dad wouldn't let me join him on any adventures. So I would stay at Marcus' house until Dad got back.

Dad looked back at me. "Nightingale, go to your room for a minute. I need to talk to Marcus alone." I nodded and ran upstairs to my room. I sat on my bed, and looked at a picture of a red headed woman resting beside my bed. It was my mother. She died a couple of weeks after I was born, so I never got to know her. Her name was Deirdre, same as my middle name. Dad said they discovered the scroll of Merlin together, fell in love, and had me. But she died in a plane crash that Dad and I were lucky enough to survive. Dad said that she was the kinda girl who would study something, and she'd form an opinion in it, and nothing could change her mind. He went on to say that I definitely inherited that from her, along with my red hair and slim jawline. My hazel eyes, nose, and ears I got from Dad. Soon I saw Marcus's car pull away from our house and could hear Dad walking up the stairs. He knocked on my bedroom door. "Come in!" I said, looking away from the picture of Mom. Whenever I tried to talk about Mom, Dad would get so sad, and try to avoid the topic. I genuinely got scared he was going to marry Willie last year. I'm so thankful that they didn't get along well. I don't hate her, she did save my life after all, but I couldn't imagine living with her. Dad walked into my room and looked at me.

"How are you feeling?" he asked cautiously. I shrugged. I really wanted to go, but I didn't want him to put his foot down. "I get it. But you need to stay here where it's safe. There'll be Nazis." I looked at Dad in disbelief. "Nazis?" I asked. "Yeah, and it doesn't matter if you're only a kid. If they get a chance, they will kill you." he said. I nodded glumly. "When are you leaving?" I asked. "I'm flying to Nepal tomorrow at 9 in the morning." he said. Suddenly his expression became firm. "You'd better not try to sneak in my luggage again." he said. "Oh come on Dad, I'm not three anymore!" I replied laughing at the memory. Dad had been going on a dig, and I tried to sneak in by hiding in his luggage. But the moment he moved bis luggage, I began to giggle very loudly at the genius of my plan. He had picked up his suitcase a good six hours before the flight to pack it up. So he decided to act like he was leaving for the airport already. He drove two miles around the city and eventually drove back home. I giggled the whole way. Dad laughed too, no doubt thinking about the same memory. "I know, but promise me." he said. "Ok, I promise I won't sneak into your luggage." I said, holding my hand over my heart. He smiled. "I'm sorry you can't come. But I promise, I'll be back." he said hugging me. I hugged him back. "I love you, Daddy." I whispered. "I love you too, pumpkin." he whispered back. He stoid up, and rubbed my hair. "Now get some sleep. Marcus will come in the morning to pick you up, and he'll take you to your vocal lessons." he said. "But Dad, I quit vocal." I reminded him. "I know, I signed you back up." he told me. I nodded and lied down in bed.

I had to think. I knew Dad wouldn't leave until after Marus had arrived, so I could probably sneak into the back of Dad's car, get a plane ticket on the same plane as Dad's and fly to Nepal with him. Borrowing the money for the ticket from Dad would be no issue, but how would I get past the two of them? I looked out my window and had an idea. I could take some repelling rope from Dad's supply closet, and tie the rope to something in my room. Then I could lower myself down, get in the back seat of the car, and ride with Dad. I snuck as quietly as I could to the supply closet, and grabbed about twenty feet of rope. I was sneaking through the kitchen behind the counter when suddenly the light came on. It must be Dad getting a midnight snack! I peered over the side of the counter to see him pour milk into a glass, and peel a banana. He then walked towards and then leaned against the counter I was hiding behind. If he decided he needed to be over on this side for some reason, I was done for! He moved suddenly, rinsed his cup, threw away the peel, and went back to his room. I saw that he left his wallet on the bar. I took $100, and swiftly, but quietly, ran back upstairs and hid the rope under my bed.

THE NEXT MORNING

I could feel Dad trying to wake me up. I pretended to be asleep as he gently shook me. "Poor thing is probably tired from Peru." he muttered to himself, closing my door behind him. I got out of bed, dressed in a little yellow dress, and did my makeup. I typically don't dress like this, but I had to keep a low profile from my Dad. I put my in my suitcase. I then tied the rope to my bed, and climbed down the side of the house. I could hear Dad talking to Marcus in the house as I ran to the car. "She's asleep upstairs. Don't wake her up, wait for her to come down. Poor girl is exhausted." Dad told him. I got in the backseat and saw Dad still had is 'archaeological seat cover' in the back. Really, the seat cover was a tarp for when we gor home and drove the car in our dirty adventure clothes. I hid under the tarp, and waited. After a couple of minutes, Dad got in the car, started it, and drove to the airport. When he parked in the airport parking lot, I waited until he went iside the parking lot building before I got out of the car. I took my suitcase and ran into the airport and went to the ticket woman. "Hi sweetie. Can I help you?" I smiled. "I'm visting my mother in Nepal. She and my Dad split up, and it's my Mom's turn to have me home. Can I buy one ticket to Nepal, please." I said. "Oh, of course you can honey! That'll be $95." I gave her the hundred. "Keep the change." I said. I didn't want to miss the plane. The ticket woman printed out a ticket Nepal and gave it to me. "Here you go, have a safe flight!" she told me. I thanked her and continued on my way. I went into the plane. Perfect, Dad had his eyes covered by his grey fedora. And my seat was way far from his. I quietly got in my seat and prepared to enjoy the flight. I felt a little bad for Marcus, and that'd I was missing vocal.

NEPAL

I had never been to Nepal, but I did not expect it be be so cold. I went to the airport bathroom and changed into my adventure clothes, which didn't help considering I was in shorts. I would have to talk to Dad about a wardrobe change. I managed to locate Dad. I saw him talking to a truck driver. Dad gave the man some money, and got in the passenger side. I quickly snuck into the back, and the driver got in the driver's seat. Soon we speed of to who knows where. Soon we stopped, I decided to wait for when Dad and the driver went away from the truck. Bad idea. "Hey! Dr. Jones, we have a stowaway!" I heard the driver cry. I felt his large, strong hands grab my small arms as I was forced to make eye contact with my father. "Nightie?!" he cried. "Oh, sorry sir. Do you know her?" the driver said releasing me. Dad shook his head in disbelief. "Yeah, it's my daughter." he meekly replied. An hour later, we went inside a bar. "Helen Deirdre Jones, you are so grounded when we get home!" Dad said said to me. I looked at my feet in shame. "How did you get here anyway?" Dad asked. "Well, if it helps, I didn't sneak in your luggage." I replied. His stink eye told me now was not the time to make jokes, so I quickly explained how I got here. "Look, I guess now you get to go do this job with me, but I will make sure you don't enjoy it. You're not going to be rewarded for breaking rules." he said. "Come on Dad, I'm a Jones. You can't make rules and not expect me to break them in at least an hour." I replied. I swear I almost heard a snicker, he turned away from me. "Just stay close to me." Dad told me. I nodded, and followed Dad as he went inside the main room in the bar. A lot of the customers were leaving. One woman with black hair collect money from them and put it in a box. She began to rub her temples as the bar emptied. Dad stepped in front of the lantern behind her, creating a large shadow. "Hello Marion." Dad said.

'Marion' froze, she looked at the shadow before quickly turning around. I saw a smile appear on her face. "Indiana Jones. I always-." She looked at me. "Who is this?" she asked Dad. "Marion, this is my daughter, Nightie. Nightie, this is my... friend Marion Ravenwood." Dad introduced us. We shook hands. "Sweetie, your father and I are about to have a grownup talk. Why don't you warm yourself by the fire?" Marion asked me. "Ok." I agreed. I sat down in a small chair next to the fire. "Bruno, get the girl a hot coco!" Marion yelled in Nepali. "Thank you Miss Ravenwood." I said in Nepali. She looked at me in amazement. "You speak Nepali?" Marion asked me. "Yeah, Daddy taught to me." I said. She stared at Dad. "Of course he did." Right then, Bruno came with the coco. After he left, Marion continued talking to my Dad. But I drank my coco.

INDY'S POV

Marion approached me, a smile on her face. "So what are you and the squirt doing in Nepal?" Marion asked. "I need one of the pieces your father collected." I say, but suddenly Marion punches me right on the jaw bone. Nightie looked at Marion and I. "You know, I learned to hate you in the last ten years." she told me. "I never meant to hurt you." I told her honestly, trying to defuse the situation. I didn't want Nightie watching this. "I was a child, I was in love. It was wrong and you knew it!" she yelled to me. I shrug at her. "You knew what you were doing." I respond. She looked at me with pure hate. "Now I do. This is my place, get out!" she said. I let out a deep breath. "I did what I did. You don't have to be happy about it, but maybe we can help each other out now." Marion walked away from me in anger, picking up the shot glasses from the table. "I need one of of the pieces your father collected." I repeat. I make a circle with my hands. "Bronze piece, about this size, with a hole in it that's off center with a crystal." I say. She doesn't respond so I ask "You know the one I mean?" Without looking at me, Marion responds with "Yeah, I know it." I suddenly realize that I haven't seen Abner since I got here. "Where's Abner?" I ask. Ignoring me, Marion goes to the serving bar to put away the shots. I follow her, and ask again "Where's Abner?" Marion, not looking at me answers my question. "Abner's dead."

I bow my head. I wasn't expecting that answer, and I pitied Marion. I knew exactly what it felt like to lose a parent. My mother died when I was eleven, and I haven't spoken to my father since I was nineteen. I looked at Nightingale, who had a sad look on her face. Nightie may never have met Abner before, but she knew that he was important to Marion. "Marion, I'm sorry." I say, actually meaning it. She took a deep breath, still refusing to look at me. "Do you know what you did to me? To my life?" she asked me. "I can only say I'm sorry so many times." I simply reply. She glared at me as she dumped the shots all over the floor. "Well then say it again anyway!" she shouted, walking away with the tray. "Sorry." I flatly say. "Yeah, everybody's sorry. Abner was sorry for dragging me all over this Earth, looking for his little bits of junk. I'm sorry to be stuck in this dive." She said. I turned around as she approached me. She walked over and stood beside me. "Everybody's sorry for something." Marion finished. She walks away again as I ask "It's a worthless bronze medallion Marion, are you gonna give it to me?" She shrugs. "Maybe, I don't know where it is." I was getting impatient. "Well maybe, you could find it." I say. I reach into my jacket pocket and pull out a wad of cash. "3,000 bucks." I offer. As she approached, Marion said "Well, that'd get me back, but not in style." I nod. "I can get you another two when we get to the states." I say. I turn her to face me. "It's important, Marion, trust me." She grins as she attempts to backhand me. I grab her hand and force the three grand into it. "You know the piece I mean? You know where it is?" I ask. She makes a small laugh. "Come back tomorrow." she said. "Why?" I ask. Her smile shrank a little. "Because I said so, that's why." She sits down on a table. I motion for Nightie to follow me. She got up, put her coco on a table, and followed me out the door. "Ha! See you tomorrow, Indiana Jones!" Marion laughed. I look back at her. She was making me wait till tomorrow to see how desperate I was, and she was enjoying it. Well let's see how much she enjoys it if I 'borrowed' the medallion tonight. Nightie and I stepped outside.

NIGHTIE'S POV

Dad carried me and made sure to hug my bare legs to protect them from the cold. I was super confused by that grownup talk my father had with Miss Ravenwood. Apparently he hurt her at least ten years ago, and they had a falling out. I decide to ask Dad. "Why does she hate you?" Dad took a deep breath. "She was my lover, before I met your mom." he answered. "We uh, had a relationship against her father's wishes, and we never spoke much after that." he finished. "Oh." I simply said. So she was an ex girlfriend of Dad's. "Do you, still love her, Dad?" He looked at me. "Well honey, what do you think of her?" he asked me. I shrug. "I mean, she's better than Willie was, but I'm not sure if mom should be replaced like that." I answer. "Sweetie, as much as I like Marion, no one could replace your mom. She was a one of a kind woman. I mean, don't get me wrong, so is Marion. But they're one of a kind, for different reasons." he said, winking at me. All of a sudden we could hear Marion crying out in fear. Dad carried me back inside the front room of the bar and set me down. "I'll be right back." he said, running back inside. Now, I'm sure he meant to tell me to stay put, but since he didn't, and I am the daughter of a notorious rule breaker. I silently followed him, and hid behind the serving bar. There were a bunch of scary men holding a red hot poker near Marion's face. She looked fearful for her life. Dad grabbed the poker with his whip, and aimed his revolver at the men. "Let her go." he said, looking at each of them. One of them started loading a machine gun, Dad shot at him, and the others began to shoot back. Dad hid behind a wall, as gunfire began to travel across the room. I could see that the curtain had lit on fire thanks to the poker. I grabbed a bottle and threw it at the back of one of the men's heads. Dad saw me and shook his head, I had a feeling he was going to have another talk with me after this. Soon, fire was everywhere, and the companions of the man I knocked unconscious noticed me and walked towards me. Dad was able to shoot one of them before he got a surprise attack from behind. A large man smashed him against the wall. Marion crawled behind the bar and saw me. "What are you doing here?!" she asked me. " I came to help!" I yelled. "Oh, you're just like your father." she said. Marion grabbed a torch and knocked the other man out with it. "Thanks!" I told her. The crazy men set the bar on fire as the held my dad against the bar. "Whiskey." Dad said, looking at Marion and I. I grabbed a random bottle and gave it to him. He smashed it over the big guy's head. The two of them began to wrestle, the larger man choking my father. "Shoot them, shoot them both." the lead said. My dad looked over at them, and saw a man loading up a gun. He pulled the large man's hand holding the revolver down, and the man shot the guy holding the machine gun.

The leader ran and hid behind a table. he looked at the ground, something had caught his eye. I picked it up, and I could see what it was. It was the bronze medallion Dad was looking for. The leader screamed as the medallion burned his hand. He dropped it, and ran outside. My dad was wrestling with the large man next to the flames. When they broke apart, I could see that Dad's opponent had his left arm lit on fire. He swung at Dad with the blazing arm, Dad ducked and punched him in the face. The man swung again, Dad duck and punched him again. Dad grabbed a chair, and broke it over the man's head. Dad then ran towards the bar where I saw a man aiming a gun at him. I saw a revolver on the floor and picked it up. Marion stared at me as I shot the man threatening to kill my father. Dad looked down, he thought that the guy shot him. The man fell face first and Dad stared st me holding a gun. Dad chuckled, giving me a look that said 'That's my girl.' "My medallion!" Maruon cried, taking off her scarf and grabbing the ancient jewelry with it, as to avoid burning her hand. Dad grabbed me, then her, and we all ran out of the blazing building. I felt so bad for Marion, her bar and her money. It was all gone. "Well Jones, at least you haven't forgotten how to show a lady a good time!" Marion shouted. Dad shook his head "Boy, you're something!" he shouted back. "Yeah, well guess what? Until I get back my $5,000 dollars, you're gonna get more then you bargained for!" Marion yelled, holding up the medallion. "I'm your partner!" she yelled. So she was coming with us. Great. I just hoped she would be better than Willie. Though now that I thought about it, Marion did hold her own, and did save me in that bar. Which already was more than what Willie ever did. I think I'm going to like Marion.
