Launching himself across several rooftops was a decidedly stupid idea.
Landing wasn't an issue, but Ritsuka soon realized that having a shadow Heracles catch him took time, and it took even more time to get him airborne again safely. Not to mention that he might attract unwanted attention by soaring through the sky.
Still, there was no way he could keep up with a horse. He was pretty sure that calling up something to catch that Servant would draw too much attention, but at the same time, if his target got too far away, Chaldea couldn't track them any more. It was quite a pickle.
"Hey, BB," Ritsuka asked as he walked over to the edge of the building he was on. "How far can the Servant go before we lose their signal?" the Master of Chaldea looked down at the ground below while formulating a plan.
BB let out a thoughtful hum into his ear as Ritsuka held up his hand, his Command Seals releasing yet another shadow. "Well, if you really want me to keep an eye on him, I think he can get about… let's say 100 kilometers away from you until I lose track of him." Ritsuka let out an impressed hum at her statement, not paying attention to the many misty bodies of the Hassan of the Hundred Face filling up the rooftop.
"That's pretty good. Nice job BB." Ritsuka complemented as the shadows began to hold hands, forming a Servant chain. With this chain, Ritsuka walked off the edge of the building and gently lowered himself to the alley below.
"But of course. As a high-grade AI, I'm much better at this then some other idiotic beasts." BB bragged, earning another eye roll from Ritsuka.
"Yes, yes, I know you're a super amazing final boss kouhai." He replied almost automatically as he landed on the ground.
"Hey, you could sound like you mean it!" BB shouted with playful indignation as the Assassins that helped Ritsuka down vanished like smoke in the wind. The Master of Chaldea power walked out of the alleyway and into the open. When he thought about it, speaking to some invisible voice would probably earn him attention he didn't want. Thankfully, since the world itself seemed much more modern, he had a way around this.
He reached into his pocket, pulling out the device he used to communicate with Chaldea and held it to his ear, like a phone. He walked past people, doing his best not to stare at how different people were in this world. Some people looked like living statues, some looked absolutely normal, and some had tools hanging off their bodies, yet as far as he could tell, this was all treated as completely normal.
That was really cool.
"So, which way are those headed?" Ritsuka asked as he jogged by people, thankful that his trick seemed to be working.
"For now, if you keep heading straight, you'll keep up with them. I'm guessing from the way they're moving, they're heading to their home base." BB supplied, keeping her voice lower so the people around them couldn't hear them.
"Awesome, thanks BB." With that, the boy from another world ran off, unknowingly missing an important detail.
A man with spiky turquoise hair and a brown trench coat walked by the Master of Chaldea, his gaze sharp and his face looking mean. He turned to watch the boy run off before sighing to himself. "Dammit Koichi. A few years and you're this rusty?" Grumbling under his breath, the shady looking man walked into an alleyway, where a motorcycle waited for him. The man climbed on the motorcycle as he dialed a number on his cell phone.
The Crawler sighed to himself as the horse he was riding on came to a stop. The last couple of days had been really weird for the vigilante, even by his own standards. He woke up a week ago to discover something horrible.
His memories of the last two years were a complete blur.
He remembered his time as a vigilante clearly. They were a defining time of his life but… right when he fought the flaming giant, that's when his memories blurred. He remembered fighting as hard as he could. He remembered the brief thrill he had doing something he only dreamed of… however. He couldn't remember the outcome.
That didn't seem right. And to make things worse, he couldn't seem to get into contact with Pop Step. His last clear memory of her was fighting for her life as she recovered in the hospital. Why couldn't he find her… and why couldn't he remember something so important…?
Speaking of important things he forgot, All Might was retired! Koichi felt as if something as important as that would be seared into his memory, but he couldn't remember hearing that announcement, despite it being nearly two weeks since it happened! At this point, Koichi was wondering if maybe he took too many blows to the head.
"Master, are you alright?" The man steering the horse as he turned to look at the vigilante.
"Huh…? Y-yeah, I'm fine. Don't worry about it, Lancer." The Crawler answered in a distracted tone. To be honest, the gray haired knight was the final piece of the weird puzzle. The handsome knight just appeared one day as some red tattoo etched itself into the vigilante's right hand. Now the Crawler had to deal with the fact that magic was real, and there was a secret nighttime war being fought for an omnipotent wishing grail.
There was a little more pressure than his usual good deeds, the man had to admit. Still, he couldn't complain about the knight's presence. They'd only been together for about four days, but now it was hard to imagine life without the magic ghost. He was a kind man, a great cook, and he did his best to help Koichi with his vigilantism, even if society at large looked down at it. The knight didn't even judge him for it, instead claiming he would have been a fine knight.
Not quite the same as a hero, but it was encouraging. It was also a nice change of pace compared to Knuckleduster's teachings… not that he didn't miss the man.
His cellphone suddenly rang, causing the man to reach down. Blinking at the caller's ID, he answered and put the phone to his ear.
"Hmm? Soga?" The man asked. "What's—"
"You're being followed," Soga informed curtly. Koichi blinked and turned around. "Don't bother, he's not in your line of sight, but he's headed directly towards you. I think he managed to get a tracker on you."
"Why would he be tracking me down?" Koichi muttered.
"I think we both know the answer to that." the knight commented bluntly. Right, right, that Holy Grail War. That made sense.
"Alright, then I can't go back to the hideout," Koichi muttered. "Maybe I should try to get in touch with Eraserhead…,"
"If you're being followed, then it would be best to lead your pursuer somewhere secluded," the man steering the horse commented.
"No, it'd be best if we face him on our own turf." Soga interrupted. "Give him a good runaround, and then come back to the hideout. I'll prepare the place in the meantime. Buy us ten minutes." Just as suddenly as the man called, he hung up on the vigilante.
"Well, we have a plan. Let us be off!" the knight called out as he clicked the sides of his horse, the majestic creature responding by neighing and leaping off to a new direction. The nameless horse was an amazing animal, able to move as fast as Koichi's own quirk, Slide and Glide. Koichi did miss traveling around with his quirk, but he had to admit that riding the horse was a very nice change of pace.
The boy looked over his body as the horse leapt from rooftop to rooftop. If some sort of tracker was put on him, he should be able to find it, right? He was really curious exactly how they managed to get a tracker on him, especially since all he did all morning was scout for other Servants. This person must have been some sort of mastermind.
Ritsuka was no mastermind, but he could tell something was off. The Master of Chaldea was forced to chase the Servant on foot, but the Servant never strayed too far away from him. Not only that, but according to BB, the chase made him go in a giant circle before the Servant finally stopped. Now Ritsuka stood in some sort of warehouse district, with the Servant hiding in one of the warehouses tucked away in the corner.
This was way too suspicious.
Ritsuka stared at the warehouse, narrowing his eyes as his brain worked overtime. What should he do here?
"Oh, senpai, whatcha doing?" BB commented in his ear.
"Thinking." Ritsuka answered curtly.
"So that explains why I smell smoke." BB teased.
"Ah ha, ah ha." Ritsuka laughed sarcastically. "Anyways, this is obviously a trap."
"But of course. Although I do wonder how they found out you were following them." BB commented.
"Same." Ritsuka muttered. "So then comes the question. Do I spring the trap or do I try to be clever?"
"I don't think you're capable enough to be clever." BB mused.
"Yeah, that's not completely wrong…," Ritsuka confirmed. "If I try going through a window or the ceiling, they'll probably spot me, especially since they have a Servant, and who knows what skills it has." He sighed as he walked to the door. "Maybe I can just get them to talk."
"I don't think you have enough charisma points to pass that kind of check, senpai," Ignoring BB's color commentary, Ritsuka gripped the door handle, pushing against it. A loud creaking filled the air as the door slowly swung open. The Master of Chaldea walked in slowly, taking a deep breath as he realized that the inside was pitch black. The only light was the sunlight streaming in from the open door.
"Hello?" Ritsuka called out, feeling very vulnerable. Still, nothing ventured, nothing gained. "Um… this is kinda awkward, but I come in peace. I just wanna talk."
The room was suddenly flooded with light, letting Ritsuka see the inside of the building. Surprisingly, it was rather empty. There were a few cots on the far side of the building, with a computer set up next to them. A portable kitchen was close by, and chalk markings were all over the floor. However, the most striking thing was the fact there were five people surrounding him.
The Servant in the group was pretty easy to pick out. After all, only one was a knight in shining white armor. The boy in a rabbit eared hoodie looked normal enough, as did the man with teal hair in a trenchcoat. The bald, dark skinned man with no pupils and a small wisp of fire for hair stood out like a sore thumb, and the small lizard man with a hoodie wasn't exactly one to blend into the crowd either.
What a strange group.
"Talk? Yeah, we can talk, after we take care of you and your Servant!" the lizard boy shouted as he leaped into the air, intent on diving on Ritsuka like a hawk. Reacting quickly, Ritsuka spread out his legs, taking a martial arts stance. He pivoted on his right foot, rapidly spinning his body around. As he spun, he lowered his body to the ground, only to quickly pop back up, slamming his shoulder into the mutant's gut.
"Tetsuzanko!" he cried out. On one hand, he really didn't need to call out his attack, but honestly, it was a little too much fun to pass up on. The lizard boy cried out in pain as spit flew out of his mouth.
"Rapt!" The fire man cried out, charging straight at Ritsuka. The Master of Chaldea quickly grabbed the stunned lizard man, spinning around and tossing the poor boy at his friend. The two fell into a pile as the man in the trenchcoat leaped over them, rearing his fist back. Spikes grew between the man's knuckles as he landed on the ground, throwing a punch at Ritsuka's shoulder.
The man's eyes widened as a mist suddenly appeared in front of his enemy. Instead of trying to power through it, the man stepped back, bouncing on his toes as he observed the gas. He could see Command Seals on Ritsuka's hand and how the mist seemed to come from that. It didn't take long for the mysterious gas to take the form of a knight in pure black armor. The armor rattled as the knight hunched over, jittering unnaturally before it threw its head back and let out an unearthly howl.
"Is that his quirk?" The man in the trenchcoat muttered.
"No… that's not a quirk. That's magecraft." The knight answered as he suddenly charged forward. His lance glowed with a holy light as it rocketed at its opponent. The shadow howled, clasping its hands together. Its metal gauntlets caught the lance, the tip inches away from its helmet.
The proper Servant then noticed a flash of red metal flying at his head. The Servant sidestepped the attack, seeing another shadowy figure, this one taking the form of a woman. The Shadow hovered in the air, the flames erupting from her feet keeping her airborne. The two Shadows charged in sync, their attacks pushing the knight away from his group.
The boy in the hoodie dropped to his hands and knees, taking what Ritsuka honestly thought was a cool pose. The boy smoothly glided over the ground, rapidly approaching the Master of Chaldea. However, the vigilante had to sharply turn to avoid the sudden appearance of Ritsuka's final Shadow Servant.
To the vigilante group, it looked as if Ritsuka had conjured a man with a dinosaur quirk. The Shadow held out its hand, a red lance materializing. With a roar, the Shadow Cu Alter launched the spear at Koichi. The vigilante took off, zipping to the right. To his dismay however, the spear twisted in the air, staying on the vigilante's tail.
Left. Right. No matter which way Koichi swerved, the spear followed. It inched closer and closer, like a monster hunting its prey. Koichi spun, the spear followed. Koichi then reversed, sliding under the spear. The weapon stopped suddenly. It slowly turned, menacingly pointing its tip towards Koichi. A red aura dripped off of it as Koichi swore he felt its killing intent, all directed at him.
Although it could not reverse causality while held by the false Berserker form of Cu Chulainn, it could still soar. And soar it did. With a sonic boom in its wake, the weapon surged towards Koichi's shoulder, intent on pinning him to the wall. Even if it wished to hunt, even if it wished to kill, its Master did not. Even as a rabid dog, the Berserker and its spear would obey.
Faster than a human could process. Faster than a human could react. The weapon drew near to its prey. However, there was a thing beyond human thought, beyond human reactions. A thing that Koichi subconsciously mastered.
Human instinct.
Without thinking, Koichi applied his quirk to his shoulder and hand. Gae Bolg met Slide and Glide. The small, almost insignificant force the quirk applied redirected the weapon away from Koichi's shoulder. The vigilante was able to then jump to the side as the twisted Gae Bolg crashed into the wall, its target escaping it.
It all happened in under a second, in a world only the fastest lived in. However, the end result was obvious. Koichi had dodged the demonic homing spear Gae Bolg.
"That… was so cool." Ritsuka muttered. He thought only Servants could pull off a stunt like that. This really was a world of superheroes, people that could do the impossible.
And now four of them wanted to beat him down. All because they thought he was in a Holy Grail War. A Holy Grail War that had superheroes for Masters.
It hit him just how dangerous of a situation this Singularity was. It hit him even harder as he realized that he was alone in this world.
Oh, he was in a lot of trouble.
Toshinori sighed to himself as he sat at his desk. Last night had placed a whole new level of stress on the man. It was only last night he realized that he was neglecting all his students to focus on Midoriya, even if it felt as if he barely taught his protégé anything. Bakugo was carrying around a heavy burden on his shoulders, one that wasn't his to bear. However, the former number one hero didn't know how to help his student.
Not only that, but there was apparently a villain that broke into the school. That was concerning enough, but apparently the encounter scarred Midoriya enough that he was now hallucinating the villain appearing in his room. The old hero couldn't help but to feel just a little helpless about all this.
He was a horrible teacher.
"YO!" The loud, vibrant shout of his fellow teacher, Present Mic, shook Toshinori from his thoughts. "Check it out!" The flamboyant teacher danced into the room before pointing both of his fingers at the former number one. "You got guests, All Might!"
"Guests?" Toshinori slowly spun around in his chair, only to be assaulted by a blonde missile.
"Uncle Might!" The daughter of his best friend clinged to the former number one like he would vanish if she loosened her grip even a little.
"Melissa?!" Confusion was laced into his voice. Despite this, he wrapped his scrawny arms around her. If he had even a fragment of his old power, he would have lifted her into the air, but in this new, frail status quo, he couldn't even do that. "What are you doing here?"
"We're here to see you, of course." The voice of David Shield filled Toshinori's ears as the scientist walked into the room. "I'm sorry it took us so long. I had to beg and plead to let them temporarily rescind my house arrest." The man had a sad smile on his face as he wrapped his arms around the two most important people in his life.
Toshinori was at a loss for words. After something like the I-Island incident, even getting off with only house arrest was a miracle. He couldn't imagine how hard Dave had to beg to be able to come here. "How long can you all stay?" Toshinori asked as he slowly adjusted himself into a more comfortable position.
"We're going to be here for a week." Melissa spoke up, finally releasing her grip on Toshinori. "I hope you can squeeze us into your schedule!"
"Of course I can!" He replied with a big smile. "But would you be able to squeeze in seeing Young Midoriya?" He asked in almost a teasing tone. His young prodigy was a lot more popular than he realized.
As Melissa's face turned red, Present Mic suddenly spoke up. "Oy, All Might. Don't forget Midoriya and Bakugo are under house arrest! You can't take him anywhere!" Toshinori slapped a hand to his forehead.
"Right, right! I guess I'd have to take you to the dorms then!" He said as he stood up slowly. "Come on, I'm sure he'll be glad to see you right now!"
Right now the last thing Deku wanted was for anyone to see him. It wasn't that he was ashamed of cleaning the dorms, far from it. He just didn't want anyone else seeing the purple haired girl helping him and Bakugo clean up.
Then again, she would probably be the lesser of two evils. He knew the scarred man on the couch flipping through the TV channels would be much harder to explain.
"Oy, bastard, you could help us out!" Bakugo shouted at the Servant on the couch.
"Nah, it ain't my job." The man responded with a dismissive wave of his hand. Deku could only shake his head. It had barely been a day, and the boy's life had been flipped upside down. He learned that there was some secret conspiracy happening in this city, a "Holy Grail War".
Seven heroes from history coming back from the dead to fight for the Holy Grail? That sounded like something out of an anime! Deku still couldn't help but feel a little excited despite that. His Servant was apparently a man named Beowulf, which… Deku had to admit, he never heard of a hero named that before. He'd have to do some research after he finished cleaning up.
It made him all the more curious what Bakugo's Servant was named, but Bakugo was tight-lipped about it. The green haired boy had a sneaking suspicion that Bakugo's Servant didn't tell him her name, but he wasn't going to ask and find out.
"Rider's helping us out, you dumbass!" Bakugo argued back to the Berserker Class Servant. Beowulf looked over his shoulder, raising an eyebrow.
"Yeah, well, good for her, but she don't gotta. She's doin' it out of the kindness of her heart or somethin' like that." Beowulf snarked. "Or, maybe she just got tired of watching the two of you bumbling around."
"BUMBLING AROUND?!" Bakugo roared as his grip on his broom got dangerously tight. He moved to get closer to Beowulf, when suddenly the front door opened. The sudden noise startled Bakugo, the boy accidently snapping the broom in half as the two Servants vanished. "Shit…," He muttered. "WHO THE HELL—," He turned to the door, only to see Toshinori walking in. "Oh." The boy's body relaxed.
"Sorry there, Young Bakugo, I didn't mean to scare you." Toshinori commented as he looked around. "Hey, you two managed to get the place looking really good." The former number one hero ran a finger across the wall, noticing there wasn't even dust on it. "Perhaps you two should open a house cleaning service,"
"Don't even joke like that…," Bakugo muttered as he picked up the pieces of the broom.
"Sorry, sorry." Toshinori laughed softly before turning to Midoriya. "Young Midoriya, you have guests!" He said, trying to emulate his old hero voice. From behind him, Melissa poked out her head, waving at the green haired boy.
"Oh! Melissa!" Deku greeted cheerfully with a smile as wide as a banana. Bakugo sighed to himself, dropping the broken broom on the table. He then headed off to his room, hands in his pockets.
"Don't mess up the job we did." was all he said as he climbed the stairs.
"Oh, so he won't be joining you two? I suppose I shouldn't be surprised." Toshinori muttered. "Anyways, young Midoriya! I'm going to see if we can't plan a lunch date with David and Melissa once you're off house arrest." Deku could only nervously chuckle at that. "Why don't you show Melissa around the dorms while I do that?" He suggested, winking at the young boy.
To Deku's credit, he only turned a little red as he sputtered.
"Oy, don't be turning into some timid rabbit, Master." Deku could hear his Servant's voice in his head.
"I-I'll do that!" Deku said as he stiffly stood up straight.
"I'll leave you two to it then." Toshinori said with a laugh, walking out the front door. Deku took a deep breath, before smiling at Melissa.
"Well, let me show you around UA's 1-A's dorms!" Deku said with all the cheer and confidence he could muster.
And so the tour began. Deku showed her everything interesting he could think of, but to be honest, there wasn't much here. Sure, they had a nice kitchen, but he was sure she saw much more impressive ones on I-Island. They probably had cool robot butlers or something. As for the rest of the place, it was pretty bare. There just wasn't much to show off.
Which is why they both eventually ended up in Midoriya's room.
"Oh, bringing a woman to your room already? Perhaps you're more like a rabbit than I first thought, Master." Deku heard Beowulf's voice again, this time the boy's face turning completely red. He shook his head to get rid of the bad thoughts his Servant was maliciously planting in his head.
"Hey, Deku." Melissa's voice dragged Izuku back to Earth. He looked up to see her standing in front of the window, the setting sun behind her. She was smiling, a sight that the boy couldn't help but find beautiful. "I brought you a gift." She slowly walked over to him, taking his hand into her own. Gently, she fastened what looked like a red wristband on him.
"Wait, is this—?" Deku noticed a familiar button on the wristband, and he reached to touch it. The moment his fingers made contact, the wristband expanded. Like magic, it wrapped around Deku's lower arm until it looked like he was wearing red sports tape.
"Yup! It's another Full Gauntlet!" She smiled as she held up a second wristband, wrapping it around his other hand. "After what happened on I-Island, I worked hard on improving these. These could take up to five of Uncle All Might's full powered punches!" Her smile faded a bit. "Or you know… they could… before he…,"
Before he knew what he was doing, Deku pulled her in for a hug. She was shocked for a split second, but she wordlessly hugged Deku back. The two stayed quiet, both silently comforting each other over the loss of All Might.
Beowulf snickered as he stood invisibly in the corner, watching the two hug. His gaze then hardened as he stood up. There was no more time to play. After tonight, Beowulf was going to break Izuku out of this dorm, punishment be damned.
There was a Holy Grail War to win.
