As Eren ran off, Historia pondered on what was all that about. Never before had the boy asked her about how to deal with girls. Usually he was extremely dense, even to the point that the blonde sometimes wondered if he was really interested in her.
'Because of course, he meant me, didn't he?' Historia thought to herself as she walked through the corridors of the royal palace.
Ever since he saved her from that pack of wolves, the boy never left her mind. She often dreamt about having a nice future with Eren. Once he catches on to her feelings, they will become a couple, then they will happily marry, settle on a farm, have a few kids…
The blonde stopped to shake off this weird train of thought from her mind. Their life together was really peaceful, but in this world, nothing was for granted. It hadn't been that long ago that the wall Maria was breached, thousands of people died, and hundreds of thousands of refugees had to relocate. Destroyed lives, murdered relatives and no way of preventing all of that could be enough to make anyone have a few uncertainties about the future.
As far as Historia knew, Eren belonged to this category. It was really a blessing that her sister brought him to live on the farm, but he still harboured a dark past. The boy never really talked about it much, he hadn't even said where he was born. And if the blonde was ever hoping on having any kind of future together with him, she needed to be his greatest support. A person who he could always turn to, in a moment of weakness. Yes, Historia truly wished he could see her in that way.
Another weird thing about this morning was that Frieda was nowhere to be found. For sure, the queen had a lot of responsibilities, but Historia spent several hours asking the servants and guardsmen if they knew where her sister went, and none of them could give her any sort of valuable answer. It seemed that she had just disappeared in the middle of the night.
'Maybe she's in the garden?' The blonde thought to herself as she started heading there.
Yesterday, she had a lot of fun with Eren and Ymir in the garden. It was nothing like what she could normally experience in the forest nearby to the farm. Sure, there were meadows everywhere around and the girl usually spent most of her time on the pasture, but none of those could possibly compare to the beauty of the royal garden.
The short grass, the small rosebushes, the colourful flower fields, it all made Historia forget that the outside world was filled with man-eating monsters, that her mother hated her so much that she had renounced her, and the boy of her dreams had little to no clue about her feelings for him.
And that was when she saw them.
At first, she couldn't believe it. This wasn't happening. Her eyesight had to be failing her.
With careful steps, she approached her two friends, sitting by the pond. Finding a good hiding place behind some trees, she took a closer look at the heart-breaking scene.
There was Eren, sitting in Ymir's lap. There was Ymir, holding Eren in a tight embrace. The two were currently making out.
Anger of jealousy filled Historia. How could this happen? Ymir would always assure the blonde of her disinterest in boys, so why was she kissing the boy that Historia had repeatedly tried to keep away from her?
After what felt like eternity of suffering, the two young teens finally separated from each other.
"Not bad for a second time" the blonde heard Ymir say with a snicker.
"Thank you" Eren said, mesmerized by the girl "thank you for this…"
"No problem, pal" the freckled female responded as she pushed him off of herself.
Historia couldn't bear with this anymore. The feelings of betrayal and jealously within her had been suddenly joined by another one.
A fear of being left out.
And so, she left her hiding place, and strode over to the pair.
"HOW COULD YOU?!" Historia cried out, gaining their attention.
The two looked at her with surprise.
"This is not what it looks like…!" Ymir exclaimed in embarrassment.
For some odd reason, Historia could see shame in the freckled girl's eyes.
"You said…" the blonde spoke, between taking heavy breathes "…you said that you weren't interested in him…"
"And I'm not!" The taller female cried out, defensively.
"What…?" Eren exclaimed with audible hurt in his voice.
Upon that, Ymir bit her tongue and looked at the boy with guilt.
"I didn't mean that I don't like you…" she said in a remorseful tone, trying to reassure the shocked Eren.
"I guess we finally got an honest answer" Historia retorted, glaring daggers at Ymir with watery eyes.
"No!" The freckled girl exclaimed with frustration.
"JUST SHUT UP!" The infuriated blonde shouted at her, before running away.
As she was running, Historia couldn't hold it anymore. Tears started falling down her face as she sobbed between her ragged breathing.
How could this happen to her? Everything was going great and suddenly, Ymir just decided to steal Eren away.
At last, in one of the halls, she ran out of breath. With no strength left inside her, the girl fell to the ground, before fully bursting into tears.
All of a sudden, she felt a hand on her shoulder.
"What's going on?" Historia heard someone ask.
As the blonde slowly raised her head to look at the newcomer, she noticed that it was her sister Frieda.
"Ymir hurt me" she exclaimed sobbingly.
"What?"
"She took away Eren!" Historia cried out "now, he will never notice me…"
"There, there…" Frieda spoke as she crouched down, embracing the sobbing blonde "it's not like they're getting married today…"
"She kissed him…" Historia whimpered.
Suddenly, Frieda took out a handkerchief and wiped her tears off her face. As the blonde girl looked up to face her, the big sister simply smiled.
"I'm sure it was a misunderstanding" the young queen reassured her "don't be sad because of something like this…"
And then, her big sister softly kissed her forehead.
"I kissed you just now" Frieda spoke "kisses are wonderful, but they don't have to mean only one thing."
Historia needed those words right now. Maybe it really was a misunderstanding?
"Uhm, Historia…"
The two females looked at the person who intruded their family bonding. It was Eren. The boy looked down in shame, upon their gaze.
"What do you want…?" Historia asked with hurt.
"I'm sorry for making you like this…" the boy spoke slowly "…it was my idea, I'm sorry. I asked Ymir for that mostly out of curiosity. I didn't know you'd be that much hurt…"
So, it really was a misunderstanding. But the blonde wouldn't let go of it that easily.
"Your apology is not enough!" Historia exclaimed, trying to muster whatever determination she still had within herself "you have to take me on a date if you want me to forgive you!"
"O-okay" Eren responded, in a thankful tone.
"A-actually" the girl spoke again with newfound confidence, trying to push her luck "it has to be at least two dates! O-or maybe… we'll be going on dates until I'm content with forgiving you and Ymir!"
"Alright!" The boy of her dreams replied hopefully.
Historia hadn't noticed when she actually stood up. They were currently facing each other, and her face was feeling hot, all of a sudden.
"So" Eren said, holding out his hand "we're good?"
Instead of taking his hand, the blonde threw herself onto him, hugging the boy, tightly.
"Yes" Historia replied, as a single tear of happiness fell down her face.
