The Preparation

The week that followed was made in preparation for Carrie to make a public stand against Gilead with her powers. She spent those seven days learning about Gilead's customs, systems, and districts. Along with her knowledge of this new world, she would train with her powers, levitating objects, and herself, and discovering her new ability that involved manipulation of the brain.

Hidden in the seemingly abandoned attic of the coroner's house, she watched the new world outside through the many spyholes of the house. The Guardians, men holding guns and unpleasant looks on their faces, were manhandling one of the Handmaids into the van. Among them was a German shepherd who was barking at his owner's latest victims. Carrie focused on the dog, her voice projecting into the canine's head who began to whine in confusion. Like a puppet on a string, she pulled one of the wires in the dog's brain and made him attack his owner. His screams filled the street as his dog ripped his fingers off the joints then turn his attention to the Guardian startled out of his task in apprehending the woman. After a series of growls, it lunged towards the Guardian and began chewing up his face until he was a bleeding mess.

The Handmaid and her walking partner fled the scene as another Guardian kicked the dog off then put it down. Carrie winced at the gunshot. She breathed out a sigh at the feeling she felt while she controlled that dog. The thrill she experienced coupled with satisfaction at taking down these violent men was not what she expected. But it felt good all the same, and it was something she needed to be careful of if she wants to avoid becoming like these monsters.
