The Rebellion
Several months have passed since the appearance of the Saint, and with every moment that passed was an ongoing battle against Gilead. She made sure she was seen in the public eye whenever she used her powers, making a point to all of Gilead that they are not in control. Any who would dare try to put an innocent on the Wall, she stopped them just in time and placed them in deep slumber as she saved those sentenced to death. With every Handmaid, Martha and Econofamily she saved, Gilead's hold on its people began to weaken.
Those she saved were smuggled to Canada with the help of Alex, Mayday, and Mark Tuello who kept in contact with each other in an effort to destroy Gilead. While many of the rescued were offered freedom in Canada, some wanted to stay and fight back against the regime. Soon enough, a mass of liberated slaves, both man and woman, became an army.
Vehicles, cars, trucks, buses, even motorcycles were stolen right out from under Gilead's nose and were armored to the extreme...beyond extreme actually. Alex at one point made a joke that his dream of being in something called "Mad Max" came true. Carrie wasn't sure what he was talking about, but she can only assume that it was a pop culture reference from the time before.
By the fifth month, Guardians, Eyes, even a few Commanders went rogue on the regime. Though distrustful of them at first, Carrie was able to see into their souls and knew that very moment that they were done with Gilead. While the Eyes and Rogue Commanders gave them inside information, the Ex-Guardians collaborated with the Martha Network to acquire supplies and weapons, mainly guns, grenades, tear gas, etc.
While Carrie made sure that Gilead kept their eyes on the Saint, no one notices the Moses Rebellion. But even in the Rebellion, death and sacrifice was unacceptable to the telekinetic.
The Aftermath of Ofglen#2
The ground shook with Carrie's anger as she glared at Alex who fell to the ground. They were currently stationed in the Chicago where a battle was going on and were pushing back against Gilead with very little effort thanks to the Saint. At this moment however, being inside the same building as the Saint is the last thing anyone wants.
"How could you?!" Carrie screamed in anguish as some dust fell over them.
Alex shakily got to his feet when the tremors stopped. "Please, try to understand, we couldn't let the new Red Center be established, it was a necessary sacrifice one of our own was not afraid to make. It was her decision." Alex tried to explain their actions.
"When I agreed to put a stop to Gilead, I specifically stated I do not want unnecessary killings! Especially not to our own!" Carrie exclaimed, angry at hearing about how a Handmaid named Ofglen was used as a suicide bomb to destroy a Red Center with Commanders and other Handmaids inside.
Alex sighed as he shook his head. "We couldn't find another way Carrie. You weren't there at the time. This Red Center was bigger than the last six Centers you demolished." he said, not happy the sacrifices that were made either.
Carrie breathed deeply in a vain effort to calm herself as she paced back and forth in the empty office that served as their war room. "And how many more have put on the bomb vest just to hurt Gilead?" she demanded, no longer using her gentle voice the moment she got wind of this excursion.
Alex was silent as he bowed his head, "It's hard to say. They're volunteers who no longer have their families...they believe they have nothing left to lose now."
"What?" Carrie exclaimed in shock at what she just heard.
"Carrie, believe me when I say this, we try to talk them out of it, but the damage Gilead placed upon them were too severe." Alex sighed mournfully, "This isn't the first time a person chose death over a hellish existence. They wanted to die, but they also wanted to bring Gilead to its knees."
Carrie couldn't find it in her will power to stand anymore. She sat in the closest chair she could find as it all sank into her. "I never should have let them join me. I should've just left them in the North to be free." she whispered, mostly to herself as her breath blew a strand of hair from her face.
"And go where? They made their choice to be with you." Alex stated to Carrie.
"When I agreed to fight, I did not want to drag my charges down with me." Carrie said with a shake of her head, "I promised them freedom, why didn't they take it?"
"Because you gave them the freedom to choose their fate; run and be free, or stay and fight back. Many of them still have loved ones imprisoned here and will not stop until they are found. Most refuse to be cowards and hide while Gilead rules through fear." Alex paused, "They never had the courage to stand up and say 'enough is enough'. But you're giving them hope, they are willing to fight to the death because of you." Carrie looked up at Alex who sat down in a chair across from her. "I know this isn't what you wanted, it's not what I want either." he grabbed her hand, "They're not afraid of death, not anymore. They trust in you, so you must trust in them."
Carrie bowed her head and tightly shut her eyes, "I don't want to meet God with so many souls hanging over my head. I only hope He can forgive when my task is done, and that their souls be welcomed into His kingdom."
"I do not want any who wish to die in such a manner to be impulsive. There is still life awaiting them beyond the chains of slavery, beyond war." With a resigned sigh, she looked up at Alex, "But if it their final decision, I will not stand in their way should that moment come. We either embrace death as a friend, or fight it as an enemy. There are two things I ask of them though, they are never to take a slave to the afterlife with them, and that we know all their names." she let out a breath, "We must honor their sacrifices for the freedom they fight for and the courage it took for them to battle Gilead. I will not have their names forgotten, not their humanities and not their identities."
"As you wish, Your Holiness." Alex said as he stood up with a bow.
"I told you not to call me that." Carrie said with a faint smile.
"Don't blame me, pretty much everyone in the Rebellion and beyond have referred to you as such. It stuck." Alex said, making Carrie laugh at the ridiculousness of the added title.
