Children of God
The shackles were cold around Eden and Isaac's wrists as they stood on the platform above the deep end of the pool. They were scared, this was where it ends for them, but not their love. Even as the Eye ordered them to renounce their sins and plead for mercy, they knew that everything Gilead spouted off was nothing more than lies to enslave them. No, death is far more merciful compared to this land filled with liars and rapists.
"'Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking...'" Eden quoted, glancing at Isaac whose eyes locked with hers, pure undying love spoken between the two as they bravely leapt towards the water before the executioners threw the weights.
"By His hand." the Eye closed the book as he sentenced them to death.
The two lovers closed their eyes as they waited for their bodies to hit the cold water. However, they didn't feel the cold surrounding them, or the water filling their lungs. It wasn't until they heard a collection of gasps and exclamations did they finally open their eyes. They and the heavy weights were suspended in midair above the water by an invisible force. They turned their heads to each other in shock and confusion before they were moved into a standing position above the water.
Before anyone could react, the entire building began to shake, causing everyone in the audience to panic and the men on the diving platform struggled to hold onto the rails. However, the structure could not withstand the quaking as it broke at the base and fell into the pool, bringing the executioners down with it. Ceiling tiles, plaster, and a foundation beam rained down on everyone surrounding the water, glass shattered behind the Guardians standing around the pool.
After a few more moments, the quaking finally stopped, but everyone was still shaken by what just happened. June was the quickest to recover by this sense of deja vu. Each earthquake always meant that the Saint is about to appear. That thought brought a small smirk to her lips when she saw a familiar white cloak appear.
"God's holy soldier has come." she boldly said, loud enough for Serena to hear as the latter tried to soothe 'her' baby. Everyone turned their gaze to the white cloaked savior and exclaimed in surprise to see the Saint walking on water. Her hands her clasped in front of her as she calmly walked up to where Eden and Isaac were floating.
Neither of them were unable to speak in the presence of the very entity the were told to be wary of by their families an superiors. She stopped right in front of them with a gentle smile as they stared at her white mask. "You need not fear me young ones." she said before the chains fell away from their hands, no longer weighing them down as they rubbed their sore muscles. "You will not die today, fore your hearts hold none of Gilead's corruption. You've grasped the real meaning of God, He who smiles with happiness at knowing that His children have true selfless love for one another and for their fellow man." she declared to the two lovers, taking their hands and connecting them with each others'. "You have proven yourselves as true children of God, and you've proven your love better than anyone I've ever seen in my life." Eden's and Isaac's eyes widened at the praise that fell from her lips as tear filled smiles came onto their faces.
Coughing and hacking pulled them out of their revere to see the old man who had sentenced them to death was being helped out of the pool by Guardians. The smile disappeared from the Saint's face as she walked over to them, still on the water, but not after she placed Eden and Isaac safely on dry ground.
"You, on the other hand." she said to the old man who was on his hands and knees as he expelled the water from his system. He and the Guardians looked up to see the Saint glaring at them as she stood on the water. The two Guardians made to get up and attack her, but she merely levitated them off the ground and held them from the ceiling over the pool before she forcefully dropped them into the water, causing a particularly painful belly flop. The spectators went 'ooohh' at the impact, among them was a Handmaid who covered her mouth to stop the laugh from escaping her lips.
With the roll of her eyes, she glanced at the other Guardians around the pool who willingly tossed their guns into the water. "At least some of you are learning." she stated before she looked down at the man who was supposedly an Eye.
"You dare attempt to murder two of God's children. What...do you have...to say for yourself?" The edges of the pool cracked and crept dangerously close to the Eye to emphasis her question.
"Well?" Though her voice was soft, it shook the building as a piece of debris landed dangerously close to the Eye.
He didn't dare get up from his knees, not unless he wanted to invoke more of the Saint's anger. "I was only doing my duty to God...Your Holiness."
"Killing children in His name is not a duty to God. The acts you committed, are more to the Devil." she said in a disappointed tone as she floated off the water and stood over the Eye.
"They committed adultery and infidelity. I gave them a chance to renounce their sins-" he tried to defend his actions, but was cut off by the Saint's glare.
"They committed no sin. They fell in love the way God wanted them to." she announced as the captivated audience watched this holy being scare the Eye. "And you dare insult Him by destroying what He created. The only sinner I see that deserves punishment, is you."
The old man knew that he was facing death, or something far worse if the accounts of what this entity did to the others was true. Seeing no other way out and tossing aside his pride, he lowered his forehead to the ground and sobbed, "Please, I was only doing what I was told Your Holiness."
"No, you weren't. All your crimes, your sins, the helpless children you've stolen and defiled to satisfy your lust, they're all your choice." she bluntly stated, not believing his lies.
The Eye swallowed as he looked up at the Saint in fear, the fact that she knew about what he had done terrified him to the core. "Yes. I know everything...and so does God."
The Saint's eyes were filled with anger and disgust at what he has done behind closed doors. To him, it felt as though he was about to be sent straight into hell. Glancing at the audience, he saw shock and disgust being directed at him. Trembling, he looked up at the Saint and started to plead for her mercy, "I'm sorry... Please... Please...I was weak...I should've reached out to God for strength." he sobbed as he bowed his head in shame and terror, "I beg you for forgiveness."
"It is not my forgiveness you need." The Saint stated, "It is God's judgment you must face. He will decide where you go once you stand before the gates. But I won't be the one who sends you to the afterlife. No, I do not kill. However, I will make sure you never defile another innocent again." she vowed as she used her telekinesis to force him to raise his head and look up at her. She made sure his eyes were locked on hers before she placed her hand over his thinning hair. His eyes went wide when he felt something worm into his mind, shutting off the wires that connected his brain to the rest of his body.
She released him before she stepped back to watch him slump to the concrete. His eyes still wide, giving everyone the impression that he was dead. However, he was still alive, just his mind was still there, a prisoner inside his unmoving body.
"Your body will remain your prison until you face the fires of Hell." The Saint said to the unmoving body before the lights behind the spectators shattered and the shades above the broken windows were drawn down, covering the entre room in darkness. Everyone exclaimed in shock and fear of the dark until someone finally opened the shades back up. Eden, Isaac and the Saint were gone.
