The Word
It was night time when Carrie got word from Commander Lawrence about his Handmaid sinking a knife into Aunt Lydia's back, an action that will more or less lead to execution. And so they were rendezvousing with Commander Lawrence's van to take the Handmaid across the border.
"So someone finally stuck that hag with a knife." Alex grinned in delight then began to lightly sing,
"She had it comin'
She had it comin'
She only had herself to blame
If you'd have been there
If you'd have seen it
I betcha you would have done the same"
"I don't think I would." Carrie said as she stared at Alex oddly for that strange song and how it associated with Aunt Lydia.
"I'm just saying that old bitch should've known better that to pull the tiger by the tail." Alex stated as he leaned against the tree behind him.
They duo were currently at the edge of the border waiting for their new charge to arrive. Both were dressed in black, to blend in with the night. Carrie pulled her cloak tightly around her to fight off the cold. Her white mask stuck to her face as nervous sweat broke out of her skin.
Alex check the time on his wrist and began to worry, "They should've been here 20 minutes ago."
Carrie looked up when she heard something in the distance. "Alex, do you hear that?" she asked her friend who followed her gaze to the trees.
The feint thumping of foot falls met his ears along with a baby's cries. "Yeah I hear it."
Another sound from above made them look up to see drones hovering above them with lights searching for something on the ground. They stayed hidden under the cover of the trees until the lights passed. Alex glared at the drones, "Persistent bastards." he growled when he heard sirens coming closer.
Carrie focused on the cries that were getting closer to them until she saw a silhouette break through the trees. She placed a hand on Alex's shoulder and pointed at the person coming towards them who then skidded to a halt. In the dim light, they saw that she was wearing the color red.
"Hello?" Alex raised his hands when he saw how frightened the young Handmaid was and how she clutched the bundle close to her chest. "Don't be afraid, we're with the Rebellion." Alex grinned, "Did you really stab Aunt Lydia in the back?"
The Handmaid was silent but nodded. "Nice." Alex gave her an approving nod as Carrie shook her head at him.
Carrie stepped forward and pulled her hood from her head to reveal her mask to the young woman who gasped at the sight of her and whispered, "The Saint."
Carrie smiled as she held her hand out in greeting, "Hello, can you tell us your name?"
"E-Emily. This is Nicole." Emily introduced herself as she came closer to them while shushing the baby in her arms.
Carrie looked down at the infant in Emily's arms and instantly recognized her, "June. This is June's child."
Emily nodded, "Yes. June gave her to me to get her out of Gilead."
"And June?"
"She stayed behind. Her daughter Hannah is still here." Emily answered then jumped when the drones' lights approached them.
Alex came up to them, "We have go now."
Carrie nodded, "Right, let's get outta here." she stuck close to Emily and Nicole as the wove between the trees and brushes.
They crouched behind the shrubs at the river's edge underneath the bridge patrolled by Gilead soldiers.
"Damn cunts." Alex cursed as he glared at the cars. "We're so close."
Carrie eyes the two drones above them as an idea stuck her. "Alex, I have an idea."
"What are you gonna do?" Alex asked as he and Emily kept the baby calm.
"Don't worry, I'll make this quick." Carrie quietly said as she pulled her hood over her head and levitated herself into the sky.
Emily watched in stark amazement as the Saint flew over to where the patrol was located. "Okay, now I believe God exists." she whispered to Alex who smiled as they watched from behind the shrubs.
The Guardians patrolling the bridge screeched to a halt when something crashed through the roof of their truck. "What the fuck!" one of them exclaimed as they leapt out of the vehicle to inspect the damage. What met them was one of the drones that was now sticking halfway out of the roof.
One of them looked at the bridge to see a dark figure walking towards them. He shined the light on them to see a white mask and a dark cloak casually make their way towards them. But what scared him was the broken drone that was floating beside their right hand.
"Oh God. The Saint. We gotta go, right now!" The one who shined the light on the cloaked woman had enough sense to urge his team into the truck. However, one of the older more arrogant Guardians cocked his gun and slowly raised it in front of him.
"Connor, we really should leave." The smart one said as he tried to drag Connor back into the car, but the older man was too stubborn.
"No, I'm ending this shit right now. I'm sick of this holy bitch fucking with us." Connor violently shrugged his hand off of him and aimed his gun at the Saint.
"Connor, don't!"
Connor didn't listen as he fired a shot at the Saint who did not stop in her strides. She merely raised a hand and stopped the bullet just a foot from her face. The Guardians tensed when she stopped. Her eyes watched them, staring into their souls as her hand controlling the drone closed into a fist and crumpled the machine into tiny pieces that floated around her.
"Oh, fuck." Connor said when he realized what he just did.
With a flick of her index finger, the metal pieces flew at them and shattered the windows, head lights, mirrors and embedded themselves into the car.
Connor dropped his gun in shock and looked at himself and his fellow Guardians to check for any injuries. Surprisingly, there were none.
He turned, only to come face-to-face with the Saint who made him jump back when they were nose-to-nose. They were locked in a staring contest until the Saint whispered, "Boo." That small sound made the Guardians jump and scramble back into the car. With the loud screeching of tires, they drove away from the bridge as fast as they can.
All was silent as Carrie's feet touched the ground again. With a light giggle, she waved Alex and Emily to come up.
Emily was stunned in silence by what she just witnessed. To think she's seen everything. "Oh my literal God." she breathed out as she held Nicole close to her with Alex gently helping her up hill until they were on the bridge.
Alex chuckled and had to fight the urge to howl in laughter. "Seeing them look as though they shit their pants never gets old no matter how many time you do that."
Carrie sighed in relief, "I didn't want to hurt them unless I had no other choice."
"Still the highlight of my evening." he turned to Emily who watched their interaction. "Godspeed Ms. Emily." Alex gestured to the bridge's path, the path to freedom.
Emily took steps towards the Canadian border, but paused when she didn't feel Alex and the Saint follow.
"You're not coming?" Emily asked when they didn't move from their spot.
Carrie smiled, "You're more than enough to help June's daughter across the border. The war is not over for me or the Rebellion." she bowed her head in respect to Emily, "May God go with you."
Emily nodded in return, "You too." she turned around and continued her walk across the bridge. She held Nicole securely to her chest as she sped up her walk which soon turned into a jog, a smile crawled onto her face as she felt herself getting lighter with each step she took towards the border, towards her freedom, towards her family.
"We have ten thousand more to go." Carrie said as she and Alex watched Emily bound off towards Canada.
"Back to Hell we go." Alex sighed as Carrie grabbed his arm and levitated them off the ground towards their headquarters.
