Chapter 4: Learning Of Craig's Past
The sound of the first period bell rings, ending that class.
In Mr. DeLorne's classroom, it is utterly silent, his students having a variety of emotions on their faces. The most dominant one being shock. The reason they're like this is because of a video he showed them after the humans' introduction. Mr. DeLorne teaches Vampire History, similar to U.S History except instead of humans, they were taught about the past lives of vampires.
Tweek, Stan, Gary, and Pip learned more about the founders of this building, and how they died. Their teacher presented them a video of the Edgewood family, almost everyone in the classroom wondered how he got access to it. They assumed he'd gotten it from the Principal, it was the only logical thought they had, however no one was brave enough to ask. The projector displayed the video in clear colors on the whiteboard.
The couple was shown first. William Edgewood was a tall man with slick black hair and his visible left eye was a light brown, an eyepatch covered his right eye. Elena was a long redhead with light blue eyes. One wouldn't think that this couple were vampires upon a glance, although the man would be on the suspicious side thanks to his eyepatch. Both were standing in front of a building that appeared as an ordinary affluent mansion before it was made into an academy. The nighttime sky had a dazzling full moon, hundreds of sparkling stars, and a scarce amount of clouds.
Using a small remote, Mr. DeLorne pressed a button to pause the video. "In case you all were wondering, William lost 'is right eye to zhe woman beside 'im. Of course, it 'appened before zhey got togezher, Elena was a 'uman at zhe time. Even I'm curious as to 'ow a female 'uman managed to injure 'im."
The whole story was that William had his eyes on Elena for quite awhile, like most men and even some women in the area. The vampires and vampiress' thought that her blood would taste both rich and sweet, like the smell of her hair and the perfume she wore. Desperate to get a sample based off of the assumption, William followed the woman to her home one night and waited until she was in a deep sleep to make his move. Little did he know, Elena was prepared for him, standing in front of her bed with a kitchen knife held in her trembling hands. William didn't expect this of course, but he knew he had nothing to fear. After all, he was a vampire, and she was a mere human. But once again, the unexpected happened, and the next thing he knew one of his eyes was severely slashed.
Mr. DeLorne resumed the video, the next scene was of the couple holding their first child. The baby boy had apricot-colored hair and hazel eyes. They named him Leon Edgewood. Mr. DeLorne skipped to when they had their second child, another boy six years later. He had black hair and amber eyes, his features immediately recognizable to the humans.
Stan raised his hand. "Hey, umm, isn't that Craig?"
"Yeah, that's him all right," Kenny answered.
Nodding, Mr. DeLorne stopped the video again. "Fuzher in zhis video, you all will see why Tucker be'aves zhe way 'e does." Before pressing play, he skipped to their third child one year later. This time, it's a little girl with red hair and blue eyes. Her name was Rosa Edgewood. Their fourth child was another girl with black hair and maroon-colored eyes, and their last child was a boy with dark red hair and dark green eyes, they were born two years later.
"Wow, they sure were, uh...excited a lot back then, weren't they?" Pip commented, truly amazed at the couple's sex drive.
Some students chuckled and murmured to one another in agreement at his remark. As the video neared its conclusion, they now saw the family in their living room. Leon was 12 years old, Rosa was 5 years old, and the other young ones, Edward and Yuna, were both 3 years old. One child wasn't with them though, and the atmosphere around the six was gloomy. William and Elena were sat in the armchairs in front of their children who were all sat on the couch, a lit fireplace was to the kids' right providing little to no lighting in the dark room.
Mr. DeLorne stopped the video for a third time. "Zhis part 'ere is where William and Elena die, so if any of you," he gave each of his human students a warning glare. "Get weak at zhe sight of blood and gore, zhen you'd best step out now. If you zhrow up, you'll be zhe one cleaning it up."
Pip gasped as the other students mumbled to one another. "A-are they gonna get robbed or something by another vampire?" Tweek asked, nervous.
"Non," Mr. DeLorne shook his head. " 'ave all of you noticed zhat one vampire is missing in zhis scene?" The students ceased their chattering to focus on the screen.
"One of the kids is missing," Gary pointed out.
"Oui, zhat's right."
The video continued on, but not a single word was uttered from the family. William's and Elena's faces appeared grim whereas the children looked anxious and confused. Rosa glanced around, noticing that their second eldest brother wasn't with them, and asked her parents about his whereabouts. Her question further deepened their frown.
"T-that's what we've called all of you in here for Rosa, t-to talk about Craig," their mother said sounding both sad and hesitant.
The room became silent again, a very tense one as the children waited on one of their parents to fill them in on their sibling. But they had an inkling as to what it could be regarding him.
It was when Craig had turned 5 years old, his attitude had all of a sudden changed. He became cold towards them, he did not speak to neither one of them anymore nor did he acknowledge their presence. It was as if he had lost interest in his own family, he found them insignificant. He was always in his room, rarely coming out of it to eat dinner with the rest, and when he did, he ate in total silence.
One day, however, was when Craig spoke...but his tone was just as apathetic as his behavior. That day was Christmas Eve, Elena had decided to have a family day out that afternoon. Craig didn't want to go, but he was forced into going with them.
As they traversed through town, Elena holding Edward and William holding Yuna in their arms, they took in all of the Christmas decorations hanging around the vicinity, all except one. Craig wasn't behaving like an average child where one would be excited about the falling snow, ornaments, and beautiful lights on this day. He simply cared less about such things.
"Craig, what the heck's up with you?" Leon demanded, tired of his little brother acting like this. "You seriously need to lighten up."
The young noirette paid him no mind as he continued looking down at the snow covered ground. At this point, the group of seven stopped walking. "Craig sweetie, please, please tell us why you're acting like this. Was it something we did? Or is there something troubling you?" Elena begged. He said nothing yet again as he gazed blankly at the white speckled sidewalk.
William used his free hand to try to get his attention, but the instant he touched his little shoulder, he was immediately shrugged off. "Craig-"
"No! Leave me alone!" His sudden outburst caused his family to eye him in shock. Edward began to tear up, and he cried shortly after, then Yuna did the same.
William and Elena tried to calm them down but to barely any avail. "C-Cwaig, w-what's wrong?" Rosa asked innocently.
"Shut up!" This time - in those empty amber eyes - resentment was gleaming strongly in the pair. With a whimper, Rosa cowered behind Leon. "What's wrong is being like this!" Craig pointed at himself. "What's so good about being a freaking vampire?! We're nothing but monsters!" He shouted over his younger siblings' crying. Leon looked around to see if anyone was watching, very glad that some humans were miles behind them. But if this kept up, they'd surely draw in attention. Craig gritted his teeth and balled his hands into fists as he glowered at the ground. "Every day at school, I either get picked on or avoided, all cuz I...I look like a freak! It's not my fault I was born like this! I wish I was a human! Ngh..." Tears threatened to slip from his eyes, but he quickly wiped them away before they could.
They all stared at him, dumbfounded. Edward and Yuna had somehow stopped crying amid Craig's angry confession. Craig gazed up with a teary-eyed glare of hatred before trudging home. It was the first Christmas they had that was not so jolly.
"I'm sure it has something to do with the exaggerated tantrum he's throwing, doesn't it?" Leon presumed breaking the silence in an annoyed tone. Even the fireplace was quiet, not a crackle was heard from it.
While William nodded his head, Elena faked a giggle. She then lightly bit her bottom lip, squeezing her hands together on her lap. "We've thought about this long and hard, and we want...to put Craig up for...adoption," she finished in a meek whisper.
All was silent once again as Leon stared at his parents in disbelief, Rosa frowning confusedly. "A-adoption?! What the hell for?!" Leon shouted. "Just because he doesn't talk to us doesn't mean we should send him away!"
"That may be true, but he blatantly stated that he'd rather be human, did he not?" William mentioned, gazing at the fireplace. "We're only granting that wish for him. Hopefully, he'll have a normal life where he won't have to worry about fitting in with the mortals anymore."
Elena nodded in agreement, smiling weakly. "Yes, he also won't have to worry about drinking blood anymore from neither human nor animal." Leon gave her a bemused frown. Didn't vampires go crazy or die if they didn't consume blood? That's what he always thought, especially from watching that happen sometimes in t.v shows and movies.
"Don't let those television shows and movies you all watch get to your head. They aren't real vampires now are they?" William grinned a little.
Leon looked embarrassed. "That's true." Rosa was still perplexed while Edward and Yuna were preoccupied with the softness of the cushions.
"If a vampire doesn't drink blood, one of two things could happen." William held up a finger. "One, they succumb to a depravity called bloodlust. They'll be driven with endless urges to drain anything that has red blood running through their veins dry, but even then they won't be satisfied until they're put out of their misery." Leon opened his mouth to voice his concerns, but his father held up another finger. "Two, they lose their vampirism over time, meaning they lose all attributes of a vampire. Including their fangs." William lowered his hand. "The chances of either outcome happening all depends on one's desire. If one isn't satisfied with their current diet, then after staving away from blood for five days at most, they'll be permitted to live a life where they can drink blood to their hearts content. Although they'll be deprived of their sense of reason. And if a vampire wishes to experience the life of a human, well...I'm sure you all know the result of that so you don't have to worry about Craig."
Elena nodded. "Right, and him being adopted into a human family will be of additional help."
Their eldest child didn't object after that, because the logic seemed...logical now that it'd been explained. There wasn't a need to argue, though he would be missed.
"So, you guys are gonna toss me aside?"
William narrowed his eye as Elena widened both of hers at Craig's monotonous accusation, the boy standing near the stairway. "N-no, Craig, it's not like that-"
"Yes, it's exactly like that," William interjected. "Since you no longer want to be one of us."
Craig said nothing for a moment, his hair shadowing his eyes. His lips then formed into a half-grin, the amber glow from the fireplace making it appear mischievous. "Yeah, you're right. I don't wanna be a vampire anymore." He lifted his head as his lips straightened into a thin line, his eyes dulled ominously in the orange-yellow glimmer of the fire. Out of nowhere, a silver blade glinted in front of William's throat, staying afloat surrounded in a black aura. This greatly shocked everyone that they also missed the little noirette appearing in between the gap of his parents' armchairs. "But what makes you think shooing me away will help?" Craig asked, his tone of voice hollow.
"It will help," his father growled nervously. The sharp tip inched closer.
"Liar," the boy hissed.
"Craig, stop it right now! Get the knife away from your father, we can talk this over, okay?" Elena tried to reason, but that earned her a fierce glare from the boy.
"Talk? Like hell I'll listen to any of you monsters!"
Before the knife stabbed the man fueled by Craig's rage, William quickly reached for the hilt, letting out a pained grunt the instant his hand went into the vile haze, but that didn't thwart his attempt. "Y-you'd better stop this," he warned through clenched teeth. "Resorting to violence is not the answer."
"That's right, please stop!" Elena cried.
With an aggravated growl, Craig forced the weapon out from his father's grip. Elena gasped, horrified along with her children at the state of William's hand. Still feeling the searing aftermath, William could only grimace at his blackened hand. It hurt to move a finger.
"Violence isn't the answer? I thought that's what all vampires do, fight and drink blood like animals!" Before Craig came to hate being a vampire and later stumbled upon this knife, he always looked up to his dad and yearned to be just like him. Both strong and independent. The man rarely relied on...wait...Clouded amber eyes glided over towards Elena, fear paralyzing her stiff at the hateful look burning in the pair. "It's your fault," Craig uttered above a whisper. "It's all your fault that he's so pathetic now. If I kill you, he'll revert back to how he used to be..." All eyes grew at his threat, his lips arching upward into a maniacal smile. "And maybe I'll consider staying here!" Both William and Leon tried to stop him from harming the woman...but it was too late.
The knife thrusted straight into Elena's heart. Blood gushed out into the air, her thin pupils constricting as a whirlwind of emotions flooded her being, her eyelids drooping halfway closed. But she suddenly started smiling, red lines trickling down to her chin from both sides of her mouth.
"ELENA!"
"MOM!"
Craig pulled the blade out with a twisted, satisfied giggle, blood droplets dripping down to the carpet. Then the knife manifested in his hand. He felt no pain from touching it.
Elena's body slumped forward. William got up to catch her before she fell to the floor, tears stinging the corner of his eye as he cradled her in his arms. "Honey hang on, I'll have the kids get you some blood packs-"
"N-no, those w-won't be e-enough." Elena hacked up a mouthful of blood, reddening her dress even more. A thick, red pool was rapidly forming beneath her. "B-but...I h-have something I-I want to s-say to o-our son with the r-remaining life I have l-left in me."
"What makes you think I'll listen to whatever you have to say to me?" Craig sneered.
His bitter words further angered William. Elena hovered a trembling palm up to his cheek, gradually ebbing his rage. He gently clasped her hand. Elena directed her glazed over light blue eyes back to Craig, her small smile wavering slightly. "I-if t-that was the case, y-you would've l-left already." Craig visibly stiffened. "I-I hope you k-know that we still love you. I-it pains me, more than the physical pain I'm feeling r-right now to see you resort to doing s-something like this...b-but it's okay. I-if you feel that I'm the cause of your f-father's weakness, then...I'll happily die for his sake."
"W-what are you saying?!" Leon nearly hollered, tears streaming down his face. "How could you believe him? You know it's not true!"
Elena blinked slowly. "...I'm j-just accepting my fate. If I am to die for my husband, and by my son's hands, then I will accept it. I-I guess you can say this was...unavoidable." She closed her eyes as she started to cry. "I will m-miss all of you, m-my time is nearing its e-end..." She forced her eyes open, looking to Craig who's tightly gripping the knife, his hair was concealing his eyes. "I-I would like for you all to promise me something...can all of you do that for me?" She observed her family, all were shedding tears of immense sorrow, her youngest ones bawling their eyes out in Rosa's arms. Elena raised a trembling hand to wipe the tears away from her husband's cheek, only for more to fall quickly after. "I want you all to live happy lives for my sake. I want neither of you to hold no grudge against Craig. That is the promise...I want...you all to...keep." Her eyes slid closed for good as she laid limp in William's arms, the small smile still alive on her face.
"ELENAAAAAA!"
BRIIIIING~
Mr. DeLorne turns off the projector then flips on the lights; the students were left speechless in their seats. "Good, looks like I don't 'ave to tell you all to stay for a second," the Frenchman says walking to his desk. "What I showed you all never leaves zhis classroom, comprendre? Also, William died later on by Tucker's 'and zhat night, and it wasn't a pretty sight."
"J-Jesus Christ!" Tweek exclaims. "Were we even allowed to watch that?!"
"Non, not really," Mr. DeLorne shrugs sitting down in his chair and pulling back a drawer to his desk. "Just needed somezhing to pass zhe time since I wasn't in zhe mood to get you and your friends up to date wizh my lesson. Your peers will do zhat tomorrow." Half of his students either groan or brazenly declare that it's not gonna be them. Picking up a pen from off his desk, Mr. DeLorne throws it at the back of a random boy's head. He hisses rubbing the spot he'd been hit at. "Now remember, tell no one of zhat video, especially Tucker if you don't wanna die." He pulls out a pack of cigarettes and a lighter, placing a stick in between his lips then lighting it.
Gary opens his mouth to say something about him smoking, but the teen beside him shakes his head. "Don't. Even if you're new here, he'll still snap at you for trying to tell him what to do." Gary frowns but adheres to his warning. He remembers this vampire's name being Pete Melman, who is currently grabbing his items consisting of only a solid black binder and a similar colored mechanical pencil.
"Hold on," Stan says. "Do you also know why Craig's last name is Tucker and not Edgewood?" He knows that Craig didn't get adopted into a human family for he still has his vampire traits, and that really confuses him, especially with how he was acting in that scene where he and his family were outside.
Mr. DeLorne inhales the cancerous smoke for a couple of seconds before exhaling it out through his nostrils. "Oui, I know zhat too, but I won't tell you all much except zhat 'e was adopted into anozher vampire family. And non, I 'ave no video on zhat."
Frowning, Stan becomes increasingly bewildered. The students from in the hallway start entering the classroom. Everyone packs up their materials for their next class, then head out of the door. Stan instantly spots Craig and his two boyfriends walking in.
The two noirettes briefly make eye contact before going about their separate ways.
