Happy belated Thanksgiving everybody! In case I release the next chapter in January, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Apologies that this chapter took long, I got sick and had to prepare for Thanksgiving. Hope you all had a fantastic turkey dinner with your families! I have been watching Volume 7 and holy shit; I can't believe how good it is! It's easily the best Volume by a longshot in my opinion. Also, PENNY'S BACK!
Review Time!
37: Expect what? Also, mmmmm….no. CRACK
Kerrowe: True but try to put yourself in her shoes (if she wears any). If you saw a giant spaceship plow through the moon and throw the Four Kingdoms into chaos, you want to find out what's going on too.
Elusive Prey: Thanks for the great comments and I'm happy you're feeling better. I've already got something in mind for Salem but I do like your off-planet theory! Grayson already has overcharge mode for Boneduster but I'll see if I can sneak in something he can spend his points on rather than ammo. Yeah, I was disappointed but I knew that it was for the best.
Mr. Medan: Yeah, Salem is already in for a huge shock and I've got some story to go along with it. Love your hypothesis!
METALHELLSPAWN: LOL, could you imagine their reactions if he did?
Hyde: Your comment means so much to me and I'm happy you love it this much. Thank you!
SilentKnight: I'm planning on having a chapter where she reflects on this shocking new development and I love your StarCraft idea! I don't think Salem is powerful enough to create a Grimm of that magnitude, she already has the Hekaton. As for the Ozpin part, I guess that sort of thing can only happen in Remnant's sphere of influence so maybe off-world body-snatching isn't possible.
Guest #1: Cool theory but I'm going with my theory of Dust coming from the moon after the Brother of Darkness destroyed it.
Guest #2: He was a hippopotamus and I eagerly await the day when an angry mob flays Jacque alive and mount his head on a pike.
Darkmaster10000000: I love that song but it sounds a little too upbeat for that chapter, I wanted to go with something that was dark and foreboding; an event which has never happened before on Remnant.
Lone Courier: I haven't forgotten about the bomb and it would be very, VERY bad is Salem got her claws on it. Also, I agree with you, the Brother of Darkness would be proud of what the Confederacy had managed to create!
RWBY and Bulletstorm belong to their respective owners. I do not own either of them.
Chapter 12
Runaway Train
EMERALD FOREST
(Molly Hatchet-Flirting with Disaster)
The cargo train roared down the deserted railroad of the Vale countryside as an army of Grimm chased after it while a massive excavator wheel rolled towards them, flattening trees and Grimm in its wake. Standing on the platform portion of the train, everyone got into combat stances. There was no time to introduce Penny to Grayson and Ishi. The Grimm were out for their blood and they had to defend themselves and the train if they attempted to derail it.
"Our next appointment's arrived. You up for the fight?" Grayson asked his friend as he reloaded Boneduster.
"I will kill them all. For Doc and Rell." Ishi proclaimed, casting a deadly glare at the approaching horde.
"Then let's make em' bleed." Grayson added, eager to spill some as he went over to Jaune and Ruby. "So what's the plan, kiddos?"
"We can't let too many of them climb on board, they'll swamp us." Jaune explained, sword and shield at the ready. He paled at the sight of the looming excavator wheel. "Also, we'll have to do something about that wheel!"
"For now we'll focus on the Grimm. One we've beaten them back we can figure out how to get away from that and find out where this train is take us." Ruby said to everyone.
"It's actually leading us to where we need to go." Grayson pointed out on the map his Leash was displaying. "I bet if we just keep truckin' along like this, this sucker'll take us straight to the Ulysses."
That part went unmissed for Penny. Was this man talking about the giant ship that crashed through the moon? She was just about to ask him when Nora suddenly popped up in front of Grayson.
"Actually, we're on a train so 'truckin along' doesn't work here!" Nora chirped.
"Ah, semantics-"
"ROOOOOOAAAARRRRGGH!" A Beowulf chose this time leap up to the train but Grayson was already upon it!
"NO TICKET!"
THWACK
Grayson punted the Beowolf, sending it careening into a tree where its spine broke on impact!
}MOURNING WOOD{ 500sp
Everyone sprang into action and more Grimm began to board the train. Ishi and Penny positioned themsleves near the end of the train while Pyrrha and Ruby got on top of two massive cargo boxes on each side of the platform and began sniping the pursing Grimm. Ruby focused her shots on the bigger threats, the Ursa, by headshotting the lot of them with Fire Dust rounds to make sure they were dead for good. Pyrrha opted for shooting their legs, leaving the wounded Grimm to be trampled by their comrades or flattened by the wheel. Ishi's tracking bullet took out a majority of the pack as it drilled through their bodies while Penny threw out her blades and decapitated several Beowolves that tried to board the train.
Several Beowolves and Creeps got up onto the train but Yang, Mercury and Nora intercepted them.
Yang pummeled the Grimm left and right, including one instance where she rammed her fist straight through the skull of a Beowolf and blasting a Creep that attempted to ambush her from behind with Ember Celica. Several more Beowolves leaped up at the train but Yang unleashed a hail of flaming shotgun rounds from her gauntlets, reducing them to burnt giblets.
Mercury launched into a dizzying assault comprised of sweeping kicks, flying kicks, spinning kicks and axe kicks against the Grimm. When several Borbatusks launched themselves at him, he stylishly kicked them away like a pro soccer player; his greaves blasted a baseball-sized hole through each of them. He then finished the last Borbatusk off by bicycle kicking it in the face, sending it flying into an Ursa.
Nora wildly pounded incoming Creeps into paste with Magnhild while laughing joyously; switching to her grenade launcher to take out the approaching Ursa chasing the train. This whole adventure had been a non-stop thrill ride for her. From learning that there was another race of humans living in outer space to fighting alongside two hardcore badasses, this was the most fun Nora was having in her entire life and she loved every second of it.
Blake, Ren and Emerald covered the left side of the train while Grayson, Jaune and Weiss covered the right.
Blake and Ren hosed down the Creeps that attempted to leap onto the train with their handguns while Emerald lashed out with her whips against the Beowolves, the curved blades slicing off heads and limbs with lethal abandon. Ren and Blake leapt off the train and hopped onto the back of an Ursa, Ren plunging one of the blades of StormFlower into its back and rodeoed it as he blasted the Grimm with his other weapon while Blake did the same with Gambol Shroud. Once they were done, Ren slit the beast's throat and jumped back up onto the train with Blake who bisected a pouncing Creep out of the air.
Jaune fought off any Grimm that came at them while Weiss summoned a lighting Glyph that fired bolts of lightning at the monsters then a gravity Glyph to send the stragglers flying into the trees. A Beowolf tried to leap up at the Huntress only to have the tip of her rapier stab straight through its eye socket. An Ursa managed to climb hallway up onto the train while Jaune and Weiss were preoccupied but it met an unfortunate end when Grayson shoved Boneduster down its throat and pulled the trigger, the blast of pellets ripping straight through its body and out of its ass (if Grimm even have those).
}BUCKSHOT ENEMA{ 1,000sp
"Tell your friends! We're open all night!" Grayson laughed as he kicked the corpse off the train.
"Incoming Nevermore!" Ishi yelled out as he pointed to the sky. A flock consisting of six bird Grimm began to fly towards them.
"Let's give em' a warm welcome!" Mercury smirked as he got ready to fight. He felt a hand on his shoulder and turned around to see Penny.
"Please allow me to handle this." Penny kindly offered as Hephaestus transformed into a jetpack and she flew up at the flock. A Nevermore dive-bombed her but she easily swooped underneath it and sliced its stomach open with her blades. Two more tried to flank her from the sides which she easily anticipated by flinging out her swords at them; the wires they were attached to coiling tightly around their necks. She tugged the wires and the two Nevermore were sent crashing headfirst into each other, the force of the impact breaking both of their necks.
Penny made a beeline towards the remaining three Nevermore while dodging the hail of feathers they flung at her. One of them swooped right at her but she activated her thrusters and rocketed head on right at it. She held up two of her swords in front of her and she cleaved straight through the Nevermore like a hot knife through butter!
Taking advantage of the momentarily stunned Grimm, Penny increased the power of her thrust and kicked the 2nd Nevermore in the face so hard that it shattered its beak and sent it flying into the wheel were it was grinded into Grimm paste. The final Nevermore attempted to attack her with its talons but Penny sliced off it's right wing followed by its head.
Hearing the cheers from the train, Penny saluted her friends as she flew back down to them. Mercury didn't look all that impressed.
"Jealous?" Emerald ribbed as she gave him a teasing look.
"Show off…" He muttered under his breath.
The sounds of distant snarling could be heard over the sounds of the still rolling excavator wheel. Turning around, everyone saw a large pack of wolf-like Grimm burst forth from the Emerald Forest and began to chase after the train.
Grayson immediately took notice that these Grimm were radically different from the wolf Grimm he kept fighting. Whereas those had a hunched over stature that made them look like werewolves, these ones looked closer to the four legged canines they were based on. Their skull masks were much sharper than the others and they had ram-like horns, along with sharp claws and spikes trailing town their backs.
Grayson narrowed his eyes. "Anyone want to tell me what those're supposed to be?"
"They're Cadejos: an offshoot of the Beowolves." Pyrrha explained. "They're not as strong but they're a lot faster-"
"MRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
Before Pyrrha could finish her explanation, a loud bellow came from the forest and a massive form erupted out of the tree line; barreling into the pack of Cadejos and towards the train. It was a Grimm but resembled a bull the size of a garbage truck! It was covered in bony plating that protected its whole body and sported four curved horns that pointed threateningly at the ragtag group of warriors. It eyes glowed red with rage and let out a snort, steam rising from its nostrils as it picked up speed like a demonically possessed locomotive. The Cadejos paid no mind to it as it charged through the pack; a few unlucky wolves were crushed underfoot by the bull.
"That's a godsdamn Maulotaur!" Emerald exclaimed in surprise. "Those things are built like bulldozers!"
"BULLdozers! Nice one, Emmy!" Yang chuckled despite the situation. Emerald forced a smile but the combination of entertaining the bimbo with an unintentional pun and being called that insufferable nickname made Emerald hate her more.
Ishi overcharged HeadHunter, took up a crouching position, and took aim through the scope. As soon as the Maulotaur's face was within the crosshairs, Ishi pulled the trigger and the bullet hit the beast dead center. The explosive bullet detonated; taking out two Cadejos that were too close to the blast. To Ishi's dismay and disbelief, the bullet only left a single singe mark upon its skeletal visage and it let out an agitated moo as it charged ever so closer to the train.
The Cadejos leapt up on top of the Maulotaur and use it as a stepping stool for a multitude of the Grimm to board the train! Most of the gang was slow to react due to the imposing sight of the Maulotaur.
"Clear these uglies out!" Ruby quickly shouted and she turned into a swirling red spiral towards the Cadejos and sliced several of them in half before reforming herself in a burst of rose petals. Weiss soon joined her, bounding from Glyph to Glyph and slashing any Grimm that tried to attack her while the others charged at the Cadejos.
Setting down next to Ruby, Weiss used another lightning infused Glyph to stun the Maulotaur but its bony hide was heavily insulated, rendering her attack infective. Ruby shifted her scythe into its sniper mode and took aim at the Maulotaur's right eye.
SKAPOW
The bullet took out the Grimm's eye, causing it to bellow in pain and fury as it picked up speed. The rest of the Cadejos had boarded onto the train, forcing Ruby and Weiss to disengage the Maulotaur and fight them off. Everyone brawled against the wolf Grimm while the train still roared through the Emerald Forest. Jaune battered a Cadejo away and beheaded one that tried to pounce on him and then whirled around to swing his sword down at another, splitting its head in half.
Pyrrha transformed Milo and Akouo into its xiphos and buckler configuration and began hacking her way through the Cadejos to get to Jaune. Soon the two were back to back; slaying Grimm alongside their friends as Jaune decapitated another Cadejo while Pyrrha threw her buckler at another then shifted her xiphos into a spear and ran a Cadejo straight through and into another one like a fucking kebab. Her buckler came spinning back into her hand thanks to her Semblance just in time to knock a Cadejo to the ground and stab it through the head. Grayson aimed Boneduster at a group of Cadejos about to attack Weiss and Ruby.
BAKOOOOOM
}SLUGFEST{ 50sp x5
He then quickly reloaded and rounded on another pack gunning for Blake and Yang.
BAKOOOOOM
}SLUGFEST{ 50sp x5
One Cadejo pounced on Grayson, causing him to drop Boneduster in the middle of a reload. Punching the monster across the face, Grayson grabbed it by its neck and crushed its windpipe!
}GAG REFLEX{ 75sp
Grayson quickly got up but another Cadejo blindsided him and sunk its teeth and claws into his leg! Grayson grunted in pain; while the fangs were not sharp enough to pierce through the protective leather his pants were made out of, the claws certainly were and they began to dig into his skin. He slammed his fist on top of the Cadejo's head hard enough to dislodge itself from Grayson's leg and he then kicked it in the side hard enough to pulverize its insides and send it flying off the train with a pained yelp.
"Bad dog." Grayson quipped.
}BAD DOG{ 100sp
He blinked. 'Did I just jinx myself?'
Another Cadejo tried to attack him from behind but Ishi blasted it out of the air with HeadHunter before it could pounce on him. Nodding to Ishi in thanks, Grayson picked up Boneduster but then he saw huge shadow cast over himself and the train. He looked up and his heart almost stopped beating.
"SWEET SONUVABITCH! GRINDWHEEL'S RIGHT ON OUR ASSES!" Grayson hollered as pointed up. Everyone, who had just finished up wiping out the remaining Cadejos, looked up and gasped when the saw the excavator wheel bearing down upon them! That's when the Maulotaur jumped up onto the train and charged at them! They barely managed to dodge out of the way when it charged them and almost gored Pyrrha with its horns but Grayson managed to loop his Leash around its neck and with a sharp tug, steered it away from her. The Grimm tried to fling Grayson away but he landed on the back of the Maulotaur! The monster began to wildly buck and thrash around in an attempt to dislodge him off of itself but Grayson held on like he was at a rodeo.
"YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWW!"
Ishi stared up at the looming wheel and his mind raced for a solution. In a few seconds the wheel was going to destroy the train and most likely kill everyone in the process. The most prudent move would be to jump off before it hit them but they would be stranded in the forest filled with Grimm waiting to tear them to shreds. He tried to think as the others fought the Maulotaur but then he saw something out of the corner of his eye. Up ahead was a disused refinery of sorts, probably a Dust refinery, coming up near the train. His focus was on the large silo near it that had a large gaping hole created from rust and exposure to the elements. Within that hole was a glowing pile of crystalized Fire Dust.
Looking back at the wheel, Ishi instantly came up with a plan as his eyes darted over to Nora. The Huntress had just transformed her warhammer into its cluster launcher mode but held herself back from firing it since Grayson was still riding the Maulotaur. She suddenly felt a metal hand grab her by the shoulder and spin her around to face Ishi.
"Nora, shoot that Dust silo as soon as the wheel gets near it!" Ishi instructed as he pointed at the silo.
"Huh?!"
"The explosion will knock it off course!" He elaborated.
"Ohhhhhhhh, I get ya!" Nora realized as she nodded in affirmation. She got down on one knee and carefully took aim at the Silo that went past her. Just as it was right near the excavator wheel, Nora launched the cluster of grenades at the silo just as it was right next to the wheel. They detonated on impact creating a loud and massive explosion!
KAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAABBBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM
The blast wave knocked everybody off their feet and tossed Grayson off the Grimm! The wheel lurched to the right from the force of the explosion then made a sharp left into the Emerald Forest and disappeared from view.
"What was that?!" Blake shouted, her ears ringing from the explosion.
"THE SOUND OF ME BEING AWESOME!" Nora cheered as she threw her fists up into the air. Her reverie was cut short when the Maulotaur recovered and charged straight at her! But Yang got in front of it and grabbed its horns, initiating duel of strength between the bull Grimm and the boisterous Huntress. Yang's overwhelming power eventually won the battle as she lifted the Maulotaur up while still tightly grasping its horns and threw it to the other side of the train!
The Maulotaur recovered and charged at the group-
BAAAAAAAAAAAZZZZZZZZZAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKKKKKKKKKKKK
A beam of light-green energy vaporized the Maulotaur's head clean off its shoulders! Its headless corpse tumbled across the floor and off the platform as it faded away into nothingness. Their jaws hanging open, everyone looked to the right and saw Penny had her swords formed in front of her in the shape of a cannon barrel while two more were behind her; anchoring themselves to the ground to keep her from losing balance. Penny retracted her swords and happily waved to everybody who stared at her.
Grayson looked to Ruby. "She can shoot lasers?!"
"She can shoot lasers." Ruby smiled, careful not let it slip that Penny was an android. Ishi was impressed as well but then his scanners began to pick up some strange readings from Penny. But that could wait for another time. Scanning the area around the radius of the train as the tracks led it into a deep canyon, Ishi didn't pick up any hostile readings.
"We're clear." Ishi announced. "There's no Grimm signatures anywhere near us."
"Thank goodness." Pyrrha remarked as she wiped the sweat off her brow. "Hopefully we can get to the Ulysses without any more unexpected surprises."
The both of them would soon find themselves eating their own words and a loud trumpeting sound echoed throughout the canyon. A rumbling noise came afterwards that got progressively louder as the train neared an archway located near the right hand side of the canyon.
SKRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM
A massive, 20 story tall elephant Grimm charged through the archway, scattering rocks and rubble everywhere as the beast began to pursue them! It had ashen black skin, quills running along its back and its head was covered in thick, bony armor along with massive tusks! Everyone was utterly terrified.
"That's…less unexpected than I would have liked." Ishi said to Pyrrha.
"Sorry…" She pathetically whimpered.
"GIVE ME A BIG FAT FUCKING BREAK! WHAT THE SHIT IS THAT?!" Grayson shouted.
"It's a Goliath!" Weiss gasped. "One of the largest and most powerful land-based Grimm on Remnant!"
"But why is it after us?! They almost never attack Huntsmen or Huntresses unless they're provoked!" Ruby exclaimed, remembering that information from Professor-I mean, Doctor Oobleck .
"Well it looks pretty fuckin' provoked now! How do we kill it?!" Grayson demanded.
"Are you kidding me?! Fighting these things is next to impossible!" Mercury replied.
"Only veteran Huntsman teams stand a chance against them!" Blake gravely added as the Goliath drew nearer. "We're just freshmen!"
"FUCK!" Grayson cursed aloud. The Goliath swung its massive tusks and hit the platform car, causing it to lurch to the left and nearly fall off the tracks! It attacked again, hitting the left side and nearly causing it to derail again and knocking everybody off their feet! The Goliath used its tusks to hook them underneath the train and slowly tip it over! They began to slide off the platform and they all wildly fired their weapons at the face of the Goliath in a panic. But their attacks were like tossing ping-pong balls at a brick wall; they only served to agitate the piss out of it.
The Goliath roared angrily and dislodged its tusks from the bottom platform car, sending it miraculously thudding back onto the tracks! The impact nearly launched the group off the train but then the Grimm raised its trunk and slammed it down upon them, nearly squashing them like flies! It continued to slam its trunk all over the platform as the group scattered to avoid the hail of blows raining down on them. Jaune was knocked off the train but Grayson was able to lasso him back onto the platform with his Leash.
The mighty beast took another swing at the group with its tusks; the group only had seconds to duck as the implements of death soared inches over their heads. The Goliath slammed its tusks against the platform car again, this time to the right, almost knocking it off the rails again and prompting Penny to unleash another one of her energy beams at him; the beam colliding right into the side of its head and forcing it to back off. But it did little to help them as the Goliath renewed its urge to kill and let out a trumpeting bellow as it gave chase again.
"This thing is going to derail us if we don't kill it!" Ishi pointed out.
"But what can we do?! We don't have anything that can make a scratch on it!" Emerald yelled.
Grayson gritted his teeth as he began to think up of a plan. Looking at the Goliath, he began to wonder if there was anything that could penetrate its rough hide or the large bone mask on its face that looked heavily armored-
Wait a sec. This all seemed familiar to Grayson. He thought back to a couple of years ago when he and his crew raided a Confederate munitions dump but was stopped by a well-fortified security door. Luckily there were some canisters of liquid nitrogen that they utilized to freeze the door, making it brittle enough form them to break though it and raid the joint. Then he remembered that Remnant had something similar: Ice Power Crystals!
"I'VE GOT AN IDEA!" Grayson all but thundered dramatically as his raised his finger into the air.
"Your ideas always end in disaster." Ishi reminded him tiredly.
"Well, it's a good one!" Grayson retorted.
"We're all open to suggestions!" Ren said as the others looked to Grayson.
"Alright, I need you guys to load up on all of the Ice Power Crystal ammo you got and wait for my signal." Grayson told them as everyone did what he said; with Ruby, Yang, Nora and Jaune passing out Ice Dust ammunition for those who didn't have any from the backpacks they procured from the base.
Penny, however, was perplexed at the odd use of words this man had for what she could only guess that he was referring to Dust. "Power Crystals?" Penny rhetorically questioned Ruby who just finished passing out the rest of the Ice Dust to the others.
"Long story." She said hastily.
Everyone loaded up and got ready as the Goliath drew nearer. Beads of sweat were rolling down their faces as their hearts thumped rapidly. They almost got killed by hordes of Grimm, what chance did a bunch of first years have against a Grimm that could flatten entire settlements? Grayson kept his hand raised in the air. "Steady…"
The Goliath hooked its tusks under the front portion of the platform car, ready to throw it and the train off the tracks-
"NOW! SHOOT IT IN THE FACE!"
Everyone fired a torrent of Ice Dust bullets at the Goliath; its armored noggin taking the full force of the bullets as chunks of ice formed all over its mug. The multitude of Ice Dust congealed against its bone mask and the skin surrounding it, irritating the beast as it dislodged itself from the car and tried to shake off the ice around its face.
"Now what?!" Ruby pressed Grayson.
"Can you get me and Yang to the top of that thing's back?" He asked as he pointed at it.
"On it!" Ruby nodded as she instantly warped around Grayson and her sister and flew towards the Goliath, dodged its flailing trunk and landed on its back; unfurling herself to release Yang and Grayson. Grayson shook off the dizziness from Ruby's semblance and steadied himself as the Goliath continued to lumber after the train.
"Okay, Yang! I need you to get angry and smash the ice!"
"Get angry? It's not that simple!"
Grayson blinked. "Whadda ya mean, 'it's not that simple'?!"
"I mean it doesn't work that way! My Aura has to take a ton of damage before I can fully activate my Semblance!"
"But you did that before back at the base without taking a hit!"
"That was only because you made fun of my hair."
Ruby stared at Grayson utterly aghast. "You made fun of her hair?!" She gasped.
"Emotions were running high and she kept making those freakin' puns-"
"Which were totally funny!" Yang interrupted with a grin.
"ZIP IT!" Grayson snapped.
Suddenly the Goliath's trunk reared back and smacked Yang halfway across its back! She slammed into one of its spines unharmed but looking very miffed. Grayson started to back away, knowing what was going to come next.
"Angry now?" Ruby nervously gulped.
With her hair slowly being lit aflame, Yang cracked her neck as her irises went red. "Yeah." Using Ember Celica to rocket herself up into the air, Yang reared back her fist and plummeted downward towards the Goliath's head!
SKKKRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSHHHHHHH
The ice forming around its face shattered, destroying the mask and sending frozen pieces of it scattering everywhere! The Goliath stumbled around as it roared in horrible pain yet still continued its one minded pursuit. Everyone back on the train was completely amazed. The Goliath's bone mask had been destroyed, leaving behind heavily frostbitten skin and exposed muscle.
"Of course!" Ren realized Grayson's plan in astonishment. "Ice Dust always has an adverse effect on Grimm bone structures and that much can easily shatter even the hardest of Grimm defenses!"
"Wait, he actually planned that?" Emerald asked incredulously.
"Apparently he's not an utter simpleton." Weiss sighed with a raised eyebrow.
Yang and Ruby tried to keep their balance as the Goliath thrashed around to throw them off its back. Grayson ran towards its head as he reloaded Boneduster, this time loading it with Fire Power Crystal shells. Grayson stood atop its neck and aimed Boneduster down at the top of its exposed head; overcharging it as he did.
"You are a pain. But I've got a painkiller!"
VVVVWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHH
}BIG GAME HUNTER{ 2,500sp
Instead of the usual cone of superheated air, Boneduster unleashed a thin, rail-like blast of fire enhanced shells from its four barrels that bored straight through the Goliath's head; melting through its thick skull and liquefying its brain! The Grimm's head burst into flames as the shells exploded out the bottom of its face and the mighty pachyderm Grimm fell to the ground, launching Grayson, Yang and Ruby off of it as it tumbled across the tracks.
Ruby quickly activated her Semblance to scoop up Grayson and Yang in midair and bring the back to the train where they landed on their backs. Everyone stared at the slowly dissipating body of the Goliath as the train left it behind. Everyone stared in stunned silence at what just transpired.
Weiss nearly fell to her knees in disbelief. "We…we actually did it. We killed a Goliath!"
Soon everyone burst into cheers and shouts of excitement. They had actually managed to kill an infamously powerful Grimm while still in their first year at Beacon! Professor Port would lose his mind!
"~WE DID IT! WE DID IT WE DID IT!~" Nora sang as she pranced around.
"Oh my Gods. Oh my Gods that-that was-holy crap!" Jaune stuttered as he fell flat on his ass, an ecstatic smile forming on his face as adrenaline rushed through his veins.
"Excellent work, Gray." Ishi congratulated. Sure, his friend could be an irresponsible idiot with equally stupid plans but there were times when a tactical genius shone through.
"Brilliantly well done, sir!" Penny complimented with great enthusiasm.
"THAT WAS AMAZING!" Ruby bounced up and down as she helped Grayson and her sister up. "You were so awesome and cool and hardcore and YOU KICKED IT'S BUTT! Say, how did you know that Ice Dust could shatter its armor?"
"Eh, I winged it. But it worked like a charm, didn't it?" He shrugged, making a mental note to conserve his Fire Power Crystal shells for future encounters against bigger Grimm.
"And the best part about it is that you used a pun as a witty one-liner!" Yang reminded him with a beaming smile.
"Oh, goddammit…" Grayson buried his face into his hands when he realized he actually did make a lame as hell pun. It seemed that a little bit of Yang was starting to rub off on him. Yang's smile didn't vanish and she held up a fist to Grayson. "We make one heck of a team, don't we?"
Grayson looked back up from his hands and his smirk returned. "Damn straight." He said as he fist-bumped Yang.
By that time the train had exited out of the canyon and back to the Emerald Forest. Far away in the distance was a steel suspension bridge built over a massive canyon bigger than the one they previously went through. The skies were clear of Nevermore and the Grimm had finally stopped pursuing them. It seemed that they now had a clear path on their trip to the Ulysses. Hopefully the train would lead them to the crash site but their only concern was where it was taking them and if there was any way to stop it-
"The wheel's back!" Blake suddenly yelled as she pointed to the right as everyone followed her finger. Out in the distance, everyone saw the wheel come into view as it barreled through the Emerald Forest!
Emerald turned to Grayson with an uncertain look. "Any more insane ideas?"
Grayson gave it some thought. "Hmmmm….I think we're safe. See that cliff its heading towards? It's gonna go right into the canyon and it'll be out of our hair for good."
True to what he said, the wheel rolled towards the cliff and sailed right off it over the edge…and straight through the bridge with a thundering crash as it sent scraps of metal flying through the air!
"IT TOOK OUT THE BRIDGE!" Ruby shrieked as Ishi ran to the controls!
"THE BRAKES! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, HIT THE FUCKIN' BRAKES!" Grayson shouted at Ishi!
"THEY'RE OUT! THE BRAKES ARE OUT, YOU HEAR ME?!" Ishi yelled as he pointed at the short circuiting console!
"WISH LIKE HELL I DIDN'T!" Grayson responded!
As the rest of the teams began to panic, Weiss frantically switched to Gravity Dust and thrusted Myrtenaster into the floor of the platform car. Weiss concentrated as hard as she could and summoned a giant black Glyph underneath the train while using up all of her Gravity Dust. The wheels instantly locked and let out an earsplitting screech as the heiress willed the Glyph to bring the train to a halt. But it was too late as the train was already moving at high velocity and it collided with the mangled bridge!
KAAACRRRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Everybody's world was plunged into darkness…
To be continued…
Hope I made up for the long wait with this kickass chapter!
This chapter was both very fun and very difficult to make because I wanted to make sure it captured the level from the game and the feel of RWBY's frantic combat. To do that, I had to make sure everybody got their moment to shine against the Grimm while also being careful not to use the upgrades they got from Volume 7. This does take place during Volume 3 after all.
Another problem was finding a good soundtrack to listen to while fighting Grimm. Hopefully I pleased some Molly Hatchet fans out there; let me know what you think. Also let this serve as a reminder: you won't find any Casey Lee Williams songs here!
Speaking of Grimm, I had a blast adding in my own Grimm and finding names for them that fit the RWBY-verse. The Cadejos are based on Central American folklore while the Maulotaur was inspired by the boss from ID Software's Heretic. Originally I wanted to have the Sabry's from Volume 7 attack them but after reading up on the Wiki that they were exclusive to the Solitas continent, I omitted them and used my own Grimm ideas.
The Goliath was a blast to use and I got to implement my own clever way for dealing with one! I love having Grayson use these crazy yet smart ideas despite not looking like the planning type. But you guys want to know something cool? That Goliath wasn't just some random Grimm that happened to be in the area or a rouge that got kicked out of his herd.
You remember how Doctor Oobleck explained that Goliaths normally stay away from human conflict? Well, the Goliath that just attack attacked our heroes was sent by Salem to gauge Grayson and Ishi's strength. Salem will mostly be a hidden, behind the scenes presence; closely watching the protagonists while mostly staying out of sight. She won't make another appearance for next few chapters but don't worry; you haven't seen the last of her yet…
