Episode 16

"(Just Like) Starting Over"

SCENE 1: DEGRASSI (FRONT LOBBY). MORNING

Students begin to enter the newly renovated Degrassi. The school interior received a new vibrant paint job while the lockers feature a more modern look. The new building includes collaborative lounges for students, updated classrooms, and an outdoor reading garden.

A banner hangs across the main lobby reading "WELCOME BACK DEGRASSI STUDENTS!" Jordan enters the school to see Ivy wearing her cheer uniform passing out flyers. She hands one to Jordan. He reads as the two begin to walk down the hall.

Jordan: I can't believe Principal Nelson had all this arranged in a matter of a few weeks.

Ivy: She is still on maternity leave so as Student council presidents it's my job to make sure students become acclimated to the new design.

Jordan: How was your break?

Ivy: It was better than normal. Chloe, of course, came back and tried to tell me how I should be running the cheerleaders. My dad introduced us to his new girlfriend.

Jordan stops at his locker.

Jordan (teasingly): Have you and Red become official yet?

Ivy sighs as she leans against the lockers.

Ivy: I didn't talk to him. He was more distant than usual.

Jordan: Sorry.

Ivy: You shouldn't be sorry. This is a new year! We only have a few months left at Degrassi. I don't want to waste my time chasing boys.

Jordan turns to see Alicia rolling Jack into Degrassi.

Jordan: Right. No chasing boys.

Ivy notices Jordan glancing over to Jack. Someone behind him then covers his eyes. He turns around to see Nolan standing there with a smile. Nolan kisses Jordan.

Nolan: I wanted to surprise you.

Jordan: I'm surprised, but why are you here?

Ivy: I should get back to handing out these flyers. I will see you later.

Ivy makes her exit.

Nolan: I transferred to Degrassi.

Jordan is speechless. Nolan hugs him, but Jordan isn't as excited as Nolan.

OPENING CREDITS

SCENE 2: DEGRASSI (HALL). MORNING

Alicia takes a seat on one of the cushioned chairs placed throughout the school. Jack rolls his wheelchair next to her. Alicia begins to smile as Jack leans in to kiss her.

Alicia: Emma really outdid herself with this redesign.

Jack: She's been busy now that Cristi is home, but she really wanted to add something to Degrassi's history.

Alicia: Must be hard on her to have a newborn and a toddler. I've been meaning to ask you how's your physical therapy going?

Jack becomes reserved. Alicia notices the shift and takes his hands.

Alicia: You don't have to talk about it if you're not ready.

Jack: Thank you.

The two are about to kiss when Jordan appears next to them.

Alicia: I need to get to class. I will see you later.

Alicia kisses Jack on his cheek and proceeds to walk away.

Jack: It just happened Jordan.

Jordan shakes his head and walks off.

SCENE 3: DEGRASSI (CLASSROOM). AFTERNOON

Jaylin: This semester we are going to learn how to analyze a text and cite evidence to support an analysis.

The bell rings. Students quickly gather their things and quickly leave out of the class.

Jaylin: Before you leave remember to turn in your papers from over the break. Next class, we'll talk about how to give credit when it's due.

Brandon exits out of the class. Lily quickly appears beside him.

Lily: I didn't see you this morning. I was worried.

Brandon: I'm a big boy Lily I don't need you checking up on me.

Lily stops following, but Brandon continues to make his way down the hall.

SCENE 4: DEGRASSI (GYMNASIUM). AFTERNOON

Music plays in the gymnasium. We see Ivy watching and pacing down the line as the Spirit Squad practices their routine. She mirrors the moves to make sure everyone is performing correctly.

Ivy: Rachel your arms need to be higher.

Rachel makes the adjustment. The routine continues as the music begins to fade.

Ivy: That was good, but not great. Let's take five then we'll pick it back up from the top.

The girls start to disperse. Red enters the gym carrying easels. The two eyes lock, but silence. Ivy takes a deep breath then makes her way to him.

Ivy: Hey.

Red: Hey.

The two go back to an awkward silence.

Ivy: I see that you're busy. I probably should get back to practice anyway.

Red tries to speak, but Ivy quickly scurries away.

Ivy: Alright! Let's get back to practice.

The team all begins to gather around. Ivy presses play on her phone and the music begins. She looks over to Red then takes her place and performs with the other girls.

SCENE 5: MASON'S HOME (LIVING ROOM). AFTERNOON

Jack enters the house. He hears Cristi crying from the living room. He rolls his chair towards the living room. Emma notice Jack at the threshold.

Emma: Hey Jack. I didn't hear you come in.

Jack: I just got home. Is Cristi okay?

Emma: Yeah she's fine. She just fussing cause she is tired.

Emma finally gets Cristi to calm down. She slowly places her inside the playpen. She looks at Jack and smiles.

Emma: How was your first day back at Degrassi.

Jack (guardedly): It was all right. Jordan knows about Alicia and me. I don't think he took that to well.

Emma: He just needs to adjust to the new dynamic in the group. You and Alicia are his best friends.

Jack: I just don't want anything else to change between us. I'm already in a wheelchair.

Emma mood shifts. Jack notices this and becomes worried.

Jack: Emma?

Emma takes a deep breath.

Emma: I received a call from the school board. You've missed almost two months of school and because of physical therapy, there will be more days you would have to miss.

Jack: What does that mean Em?

Emma: It means you might not have enough credits to graduate this year.

Jack is speechless. He tries to process what this might mean for his future.

SCENE 6: THE DOT. LATE EVENING

Spinner is wiping down counters at the Dot. Brandon enters and notices Lily paying for her drink. He quickly tries to sneak out, but she turns around and sees him. She makes her way towards him.

Lily: Hey Brand. You weren't avoiding me, were you?

Brandon: Of course not.

Brandon kisses Lily on her check. The two make their way to one of the booths.

Lily: Are you okay? You've been acting weird since we got back.

Brandon: Just have other things on my mind. Everything isn't always about you.

Brandon rises from his seat and storms off. Lily has a confused look on her face as she watches him leave. Brandon brushes pass Xavier as he enters the Dot. He notices Lily at the table wiping her eyes.

Lily takes her drink and places a fake smile on her face.

Xavier: You know you don't deserve to be treated like that.

Lily: Leave me alone and mind your own business.

Lily exits out of the Dot.

SCENE 7: DEGRASSI (HALLWAYS). MORNING

Jordan watches as Jack made his way to the locker. As Nolan approaches, he notices Jordan eyes on Jack.

Nolan: Morning

Nolan kisses Jordan, but Jordan mind is on something or someone else.

Nolan: Are you okay? It seems like you're somewhere else.

Nolan looks over to see Alicia comforting Jack. Jordan leans in and starts to kiss Nolan. Nolan is taken by surprise.

Jordan: Let's get to class.

Nolan: Hey. Are you sure that you're okay?

Jordan nods with a smile on his face. He takes Nolan's hand and the two begin to walk down the hall. Alicia continues to comfort Jack.

Alicia: Is that really a bad thing? I know it's tough right now, but we get to graduate together.

Jack: I'm can't walk Alicia! I don't care about graduating.

Alicia gathers her things and walks off upset.

Jack: Ali…Alicia wait.

Jack pounds his fist against the locker.

SCENE 8: DEGRASSI (CLASSROOM). MORNING

The bell rings and students are entering the classroom. Ivy takes a seat next to Jordan.

Jaylin: Part of the reading process is to make connections to the writing, which means you spend time interpreting it.

Ivy leans closer to Jordan.

Ivy (whispering): Did you hear about Jack and Alicia? Apparently, they got into an argument in the halls this morning.

Jaylin taps on Ivy's desk.

Jaylin: Do you care to share the morning gossip, Ms. Armstrong.

Ivy nods as Jaylin continue to give his lecture. Jordan looks around then leans over to Ivy.

Jordan: I saw them this morning. They seemed fine.

Ivy: Jack might not be graduating with us this year.

Jaylin: Everyone pair up. To find the meaning of the text you need to analyze it. In your groups dissect the passage then interpret it.

Students begin to shift their desk.

SCENE 9: DEGRASSI (STUDENT LOUNGE). AFTERNOON

Jack is working inside of the student lounge. Jordan walks pass and notices Jack inside. He makes his way towards the table.

Jordan: I'm sorry. I know I've been distant, but that doesn't excuse me not being there for you.

Jack: So I guess you heard.

Jordan takes a seat at the table.

Jordan: You will walk across that stage, Jack.

Jack: I won't be walking anywhere.

Jordan: If not then, I will push you across that stage myself.

Jack smiles at the thought. Jordan starts to take out his books.

SCENE 10: DEGRASSI (HALL STEPS). AFTERNOON

Lily is seating on the hallway stairs. Xavier is making his way towards the main exit until he notices her. He approaches her instead. He takes a seat next to her.

Xavier: What's going on with you?

Lily: I am tired ofeveryone treats me like the bad guy. I don't have any friends here and the ones I did start to hate me.

Xavier: You have a tendency to do mean things. I mean we're broken up, but that doesn't mean I'm not your friend.

Xavier rises up from the stairs.

Lily: Thank you.

Xavier nods and continues to walk out of the building.
