The party in the steerage was long over, Rose retreated to her suite, the band was gone, the only people who remained were Jack, Fabrizio, Tommy, and Bjorn sitting around a small table in a deck of cards.
"Ah, you got me." Tommy exclaimed in slight disappointment when he revealed he only had a pair of threes. Fabrizio giggled as he took the combined pot of various currencies. The pot contained Swedish Krona, Italian Lira, Irish Pounds, some Francs, and a few American cents. "So, Jack, that Rose girl came down from her palace to dance with you."
"Are you trying to distract me, Tommy?" Jack smirked to himself as he carefully studied his card hand.
"Please-a be-a quiet, Tommy, I need concentrate." Fabrizio said as he too looked over his hand. "But yes, Jack, you dance with-a Rose huh?"
"Två, snälla." Bjorn slid two cards, face down, to Fabrizio, who was the dealer.
"That was quite a party, though, I'm just glad I have some life left in me for some cards." Tommy said, throwing two Irish Pounds and a Krona he won from Bjorn into the center of the table. Everyone anted up except for Bjorn.
"Jag viker." Bjorn said, throwing his cards face down and pulling his winnings closer to him.
"You're a lucky man, Jack." Tommy said.
"Fabri here is lucky, too." Jack said, smirking to himself. "I saw you dance with Helga."
"Don't-a look at my cards." Fabrizio blushed and rushed to hide his cards. "What-a can I say? I am, how you say, man for women."
"A ladies man?" Jack asked. "She's perfect for you, congratulations."
"Si, that. Her father is a tough man, you know, he not like me." Fabrizio responded with shrug, throwing his cards down, revealing he had straight. Tommy rolled his eyes when he revealed his three queens. Jack smirked and revealed a flush. "Ah, this-a time you win. Hey, Bjorn, any lucky girl for you?"
Bjorn looked around the table awkwardly, not understanding any of the English, but hearing his name. Fabrizio simply laughed and slapped Bjorn on the back, which only made him more awkward. Tommy smirked and began to deal.
"Any lucky girl for you, Tommy?" Jack asked.
"No, I'm a lone wolf." Tommy said coolly. "Don't change the subject Jack, how did you manage to land the rich girl?"
"Believe it or not I saved her life." Jack said with a smug grin on his face.
"No, you lie!" Fabrizio exclaimed, handing Tommy three cards to exchange. "Also, I-a raise bet to four." Fabrizio tossed in two Lira, and two American coins.
"I fold." Jack exclaimed. "I'm serious, I found her about to jump off the end of the boat and so reached over and pulled her up."
"Huh, didn't know a first class girl could have problems." Tommy said as he took a puff from his cigarette. "That explains your special treatment. Alright, lads, cards down." Tommy had a pair of sevens, Tommy a pair of fives, and Bjorn had a pair of threes. "Ah, you may beat me at an arm wrestle, Bjorn, but I got you at poker!" Bjorn was still confused.
"I hope that-a one day, Helga and I can have a family, you know? What about you and Rose?" Fabrizio intrejected as Bjorn shuffled the cards.
"You must like this girl a lot." Tommy said with a small smirk.
"I don't know. Poor Rose…" Jack began.
"A poor little rich girl, I see." Tommy said with a scoff.
"She… she's trapped. She's being forced to marry a man I know she doesn't love." Jack said, his face turning more melancholy.
"Sounds-a awful." Fabrizio said with a small frown. "Oh, Bjorn, I-a need-a one card." Fabrizio said exchanging a card from the deck with Bjorn.
"Two," Jack said, holding up two fingers. Bjorn nodded.
"Oh, I'm-a almost out." Fabrizio said, comparing his tiny pile of coins compared to Jack, Tommy, and Bjorn's. "No-a fair Tommy, you are-a winning."
"That's the luck of the Irish for ya." Tommy said, taking his cigarette out of his mouth. "Besides, I didn't know our rich boy here could dance." Bjorn anted up the pot, and the other men followed, but it didn't stop there.
"What can I say? When you travel as much as I have you learn these things." Jack said, looking up from his cards, he anted up the pot again. "You know, Fabri and I won these tickets from a game of poker."
"Oh, maybe you have some Irish luck in ya, Jack." Tommy said, then his lips curled into a mischievous grin. Fabrizio had put all of his remaining money into the pot. Bjorn was down by half, and Jack had a considerable dent made in his. "But your Irish ancestors have abandoned you today." Tommy said as he revealed he had a straight flush.
"No, now I-a have no money." Fabrizio said, looking down at his full house.
"That's poker for ya." Tommy said with a smile as he pulled the huge pile of coins towards him. "Thanks for the contribution."
