Season Five

Episode 9

"Ungodly Hour"

Scene 1: Degrassi (Student Council Office). Afternoon

Alicia stands in front of the room conducting the meeting. Amina whispers something into Harriet's ear which causes her to laugh. Everyone's attentions turn to them.

Alicia: Can we have the event report?

Harriet stands at her desk.

Harriet: The Athlete Auction and Maze of Fun were successful, but I think we should focus on doing a community event.

Amina: Nolan and I have been hosting mixers at Above the Dot. I think it would be nice to host something for the LGBTQIA members of Degrassi. Especially, after the incident with Jack, I think it's needed.

Alicia: I agree. Amina and Harriet you are in charge of planning a fun community event.

Harriet: Maybe we can meet tomorrow at the house after school and we can toss around some ideas.

Amina nods and smiles as she tries to hide her excitement.

Alicia: If there is nothing else to report our meeting is adjourned.

Everyone rises and grab their belongings. Red approaches Alicia and wraps his arms around her.

Red: Dot?

Alicia: Lead the way, Mr. Secretary.

They exit the office. Harriet turns around to see Amina is by the door waiting.

OPENING CREDITS

Scene 2: The Dot. Afternoon

Jordan and Jack are seated at one of the booths. They are sharing a basket of fries. Red and Alicia enter the Dot. They make their way to their friend. Jordan shifts to the other side of the booth to sit next to Jack. Alicia and Red take a seat.

Jordan: My break is over. I catch you guys later.

Jordan kisses Jack before returning behind the counter.

Red: I'll go grab us some drinks.

Alicia: I am glad you and Jordan are finally together.

Jack: It's not too awkward for you?

Alicia: I'm happy for you. And everyone knew that you two were bound to happen eventually.

Jack: You look happy with Red.

Alicia over her should see Red waiting at the counter. She starts to smile then turns back to Jack.

Alicia: I am.

Ivy enters the Dot. Red attention shifts to the door. Their eyes meet. Ivy slowly makes her way to the counter. Jordan arrives with Red's drink. Jordan can feel the awkward tension.

Jordan: I'll get your usual.

Ivy: Hey. It's been a while.

Red: Yeah. It has. Kasey has been asking about you. She misses the tea parties you had with her.

Ivy: She was a marvelous host.

Red chuckles. He looks over to the table with Alicia and Jack.

Red: I probably should head back over to my table.

Ivy: No. Yeah. It was nice seeing you Red.

Red grabs his drinks from the counter and makes his way back to the table. Ivy has a revelation. She grabs her drink from Jordan and quickly exits the Dot.

Scene 3: Degrassi (Main Foyer). Morning

Isaiah is hanging flyers for the Degrassi Drama Department. Maxwell walks over.

Isaiah: You interested?

Isaiah hands Maxwell a flyer.

Isaiah: We're looking for new people to join.

Maxwell: I'm not sure I'm the right person.

Isaiah: I think you're the perfect person. I saw you hanging in the Media Lab. You have technical expertise that could help us put on a great production.

Maxwell takes another look at the flyer. He's skeptical.

Maxwell: I still don't know man. Let me think about it.

Maxwell hands the flyer back to Isaiah.

Isaiah: We meet in the gym after school. You should check it out.

Isaiah proceeds to walk off.

Scene 4: Degrassi (Hall). Afternoon

The transition bell rings and students quickly fill the hall from the classrooms. Nolan walks over to Amina.

Nolan: Are you ready for your big date with Harriet?

Amina gathers her things from her desk. They proceed to exit out of the class.

Amina: It's not a date, Nolan. We're just meeting to come up with ideas for a community event.

Nolan: You two been hanging out a lot. I think you should just ask her out already.

Amina: What if she doesn't see me like that. She's very religious and she made it clear before I was an abomination.

Nolan stops Amina.

Nolan: You are not an abomination, Amina. I don't ever want you to think of yourself that way. Harriet is just scared to accept that she might have feelings for you.

Amina embraces Nolan.

Scene 5: Beach. Afternoon

Ivy and Dev are walking side by side on the beach. Ivy pauses as she steps into the water. She felt at peace. Dev stands beside her taking in a beautiful sunset.

Dev: I was surprised you called me. We haven't seen much of each other lately.

Ivy: I'm sorry, Dev. I've been working on this big project and just couldn't be distracted.

Dev (chuckling): I didn't know I was a distraction.

Ivy: You're not.

Ivy takes a deep breath. She turns to face Dev.

Ivy: The feelings I have for you are the distraction. And I don't know what the means for us.

Dev smiles as he leans in kisses Ivy. He pulls her closer as their bodies press against each other. Ivy wraps her arms around Dev's neck as they continue to kiss.

Scene 6: Morton House. Afternoon

Harriet and Amina enter the house laughing. Harriet tosses her bag on the nearby couch. She goes into the next room.

Harriet: Do you want something to drink? Water?

Amina takes a seat as she nods. Harriet returns and hands a bottle of water to Amina.

Amina: Your house is lovely.

Amina grabs a photo of baby Harriet.

Amina (teasingly): Isn't she the cutest baby you ever seen?

Harriet becomes embarrassed. She reaches for the picture, but Amina snatches it. They begin to wrestle. The door opens and Mrs. Morton enters the house. Harriet turns in surprise to see her mother.

Harriet: Hey. I thought you were going to be at the school late today, mom.

Mrs. Morton: What's going on here?

Harriet: We were just going over some ideas for the student council.

Amina rises from the couch.

Amina: Hey, Mrs. Morton.

Mrs. Morton remains quiet. An awkward silence fills the room.

Scene 7. Degrassi (Gymnasium). Afternoon

Students are gathered on the stage having a discussion. Maxwell quietly enters the gym. Shay notices him and makes her way towards him with a smile.

Shay: I'm surprised to see you here. This isn't your typical scene.

Maxwell: If you haven't noticed I don't have a scene.

Isaiah looks over his shoulder to see Maxwell and Shay. He smiles comes across his face as he turns back to the rest of the group.

Maxwell: I probably should go check out the meeting.

Shay smiles as she returns to practice.

Scene 8: Morton House. Late Evening

Amina and Harriet are working on the couch. Mrs. Morton observes from the kitchen. She becomes uncomfortable seeing her daughter working so closely with Amina.

Amina: A Degrassi sit-in! We can use the gym and rent a large screen to show the movie.

Harriet: There can be concession sales.

Amina: I will write a proposal and give it to Alicia.

Mrs. Morton clears her throat as she places snacks in front of the young girls. Amina catches the hint and starts to gather her belonging.

Harriet: Are you leaving? We still need to come up with a proposal.

Amina: I think I should get home. It's getting late.

Mrs. Morton: She has her own home, Harriet.

Mr. Morton enters.

Mr. Morton: Who do we have here?

Harriet: This is my friend Amina.

Mr. Morton: Nice to meet you. You should stay for dinner, Amina.

Mrs. Morton puts on an awkward smile.

Scene 9: Little Miss Steaks. Late Evening

Dev and Ivy are sitting at a booth laughing amongst themselves. They are sharing nachos. Dev could not take his eyes off Ivy as she shyly takes a sip of her drink.

Ivy: You are being weird.

Dev: You know I had a crush on you back in high school.

Ivy: You're lying!

Dev (laughing): Are you seriously telling me you didn't know?

Ivy: I mean...I had a feeling, but things were more complicated back then. Levi was my best friend.

Dev takes hold of Ivy's hand.

Dev: I like you, Ives. I liked you for a long time now. Levi and I are over and it has been that way for a while now.

Ivy: I—I should talk to Levi first.

Dev understand. He wasn't going to give up. Dev pushes the nachos closer to Ivy. She smiles as she takes one. They continue to eat their nachos trying to hide their smiles.

Scene 10: Morton House (Kitchen). Late Evening

The Morton's are eating with Amina joining them. Mr. Morton is enjoying Amina's company. Mrs. Morton quickly eats her food not wanting to ruin the evening.

Amina: You're hilarious, Mr. Morton.

Mr. Morton: Anyone who can listen to me rant about my childhood is always welcomed in this house.

Amina: I love stories about kids on the sandlot.

Mrs. Morton clears her throat.

Mrs. Morton: I think I'll clear the table.

Amina: I can help if you like, Mrs. Morton.

Mrs. Morton doesn't respond.

Mr. Morton: Amina?

Amina: Yes sir?

Mr. Morton: Harriet says you're the Vice-President of Degrassi. I know a powerful woman like you and my daughter intimidates the guys.

Harriet: Daddy!

Amina: It's alright. I'm gay.

Mr. Morton: How do your parents feel about this ungodly behavior?

Amina: With all due respect, Mr. Morton, my parents love me unconditionally.

Mr. Morton:

Mr. Morton rises in rage. He places his palm on Amina's head.

Mr. Morton: Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Amina tries to fight him off, but he continues to hold onto her as he recites bible verses.

Harriet (voice breaking): Let go of her, daddy!

Mr. Morton pushes Harriet to the floor. Harriet was distraught. She saw her father in a new light. Amina finally breaks free. She grabs her things and quickly escapes out the door.

Mr. Morton makes his way to his daughter. He kneels to her. He was disgusted.

Mr. Morton: No daughter of mine shall condone this immoral behavior. We are taking you out of that school.

Harriet breaks out into tears. Mrs. Morton takes Mr. Morton into another room.

Scene 11: Degrassi (Hall). Morning

Isaiah approaches Maxwell who is gathering things from his locker.

Isaiah: We appreciate you stopping by yesterday.

Maxwell: I enjoyed myself. I have not done that in a while.

Isaiah passes Maxwell a flyer.

Isaiah: We are doing Clue for the semester play.

Maxwell: Clue?

Isaiah: Walk with me, my friend.

Isaiah places his arm around Maxwell as they walk down the hall.

Scene 12: Degrassi (Student Council Office)

Harriet appears at the door. She sees Amina and tries to gather her thoughts. She takes a deep breath as she marches over to her. Amina turns around surprised by Harriet.

Amina: You scared me.

Harriet: I am sorry about my parents. They had no right to say those things to you.

Amina: Unfortunately, its nothing I haven't heard before.

Harriet: I know I been somewhat hard on you for your viewpoints and I'm sorry. I have no right to pass judgment.

Harriet moves closer to Amina. She felt her heart racing as she slowly reaches for Amina's hand. Amina was confused, but she didn't question what was happening between them.

Amina: Harr—

Harriet shushes her as she leans closer and presses her lips against Amina. Amina pulls away in disbelief. She goes back in for another kiss. Harriet enjoys it, but then she remembers…her faith.

Harriet: I can't…

Harriet quickly runs out of the room in tears feeling conflicted.
