Episode 14

"Ruin the Friendship"

Scene 1: Scott's House (Alicia's Room). Morning

Shay and Alicia are moving with synchronicity. Shay opens her bookbag while Alicia slides a book inside. Alicia searches her bed for a lost item. Shay walks past, handing her the phone she was missing.

Shay: Don't forget—

Alicia: Dinner tonight at 8. I know. Remember that you—

Shay: Have a statistics test during third period. I'm ready. I studied.

Alicia opens her bedroom door to see that her mother is standing there with an anxious look on her face. The girls are confused, but then Madeline Myers appears behind Mrs. Scott. Alicia turns to Shay, whose smiles quickly disappeared as she stood before her mother.

Mrs. Scott: Let's give them a moment to talk.

Alicia exits the room.

Madeline: Hey Bubbles.

Shay: Please don't call me that, mom.

Madeline: You're right. I'm sorry, Shay.

Shay: What are you doing here?

Madeline: I want you to come home. Your home is with me.

Shay is taken back by her mother's request.

OPENING CREDITS

Scene 2: Outside Degrassi. Morning

We see students coming from all directions as they return to Degrassi. Students greet one another as they enter the school. Some students are hanging on the steps of Degrassi.

Scene 3: Degrassi (Main Foyer). Morning

Fraternal twins Matthew and Madison enter the halls of Degrassi unimpressed. Matthew's attention buried on his phone. He dressed in full black with a punk rock style. His sister, on the other hand, was the complete opposite. Madison was fashion-forward and bright.

Madison: Welcome to Degrassi!

Matthew: Let's just hope things go smoothly at this school.

Madison's smile quickly disappears as Matthew callously walks away. Madison was worried that her secret might be revealed.

Scene 4: Degrassi (Classroom). Morning

Students begin to fill the classroom. Among them is K.C. He takes a seat at the available desk besides Carina. Mrs. Morton starts to walk down the aisle handing students their graded assignments.

Mrs. Morton: Good Morning. I'm returning your math assessments from before the break. I would suggest some extra studying this term.

She places K.C's paper in front of him with a failing grade. K.C sighs in frustration. Carina looks over to see how upset K.C is making the grade. She leans over to him.

Carina (whispering): I can help you out if you need some tutoring.

K.C (whispering): I don't need your charity, Carina. Thanks, though.

Carina (whispering): It's not –

Mrs. Morton: Carina? How about you solve the equation on the board instead of disrupting my class.

Carina quietly makes her way to the board and begins to solve the math equation.

Scene 5: Degrassi (Hallways). Afternoon

Shay and Alicia are walking down the hall.

Alicia: How did things go with your mother?

Shay takes a seat on a nearby bench. Alicia leans against the wall.

Shay: She wants me to move back home.

Alicia is surprised.

Alicia: Are you going to do it?

Shay: I appreciate you and your family for taking me in, but she's my mother. I should be with her, right?

Alicia wasn't prepared for the answer she had got. She was hurt but didn't want to express that to Shay.

Alicia: You should give her another chance.

Shay is hesitant, but she nods in agreement. She rises from the bench and hugs Alicia.

Shay: You are the best. I probably should call my mom and let her know.

Shay proceeds down the hall. Jack sees Alicia becoming visibly upset.

Jack: Hey? Everything okay, Alicia?

Alicia: Shay is moving back in with her mother, but I don't want her to. She's not just my best friend, but my sister.

Jack consoles Alicia with a hug.

Jack: Just because she's leaving doesn't mean she's not going to be your best friend. You probably should talk to her and let her know how you feel.

Alicia: You're right.

Jack: Remember, you'll always have me. I'm not going anywhere.

Jack kisses Alicia's forehead. The two of them start to walk down the hall with their arms wrapped around each other.

Scene 6: Degrassi (The Dot). Afternoon

Carina is sitting alone at one of the tables, drinking her coffee. K.C arrives and makes his way to the counter.

Jordan: Welcome to the Dot. How can I help you today?

K.C: Can I just get a coffee to go with cream and sugar. Thank you.

K.C turns around to see Carina. Jordan returns with his drink placing it on the counter. K.C takes a deep breath as he makes his way towards Carina.

K.C: I'm not used to people wanting to help me. I'm sorry, and I could use your help if the offer stands.

Carina: Of course. Let's meet at your house after school.

K.C: Um, my house isn't the best right now. How about we just meet back here?

Carina nods.

K.C: I'll see you tomorrow then.

Carina: Yeah. See you then.

K.C smiles as he proceeds to exit the Dot. Before leaving, he looks over his shoulder to see Carina smiling.

Scene 7: Degrassi (Athletic Field). Afternoon

The Degrassi football team is running drills on the field. Madison is watching in enjoyment from the bleachers.

Madison (loudly): Keep up the good job, boys!

Some of the team members look over with confusion. Madison waves with flirtation. On the field, Xavier takes off his helmet, looking in her direction with a smile. Decker approaches next to him with a smile.

Xavier: Who's that?

Decker looks towards Madison, who is enjoying the attention and posing cutely for the boys.

Decker: I'm not sure. I don't think I saw her around before. Maybe she's new.

Jaylin sneaks up from behind the boys and places his hand on their shoulder.

Jaylin: How about some laps around the field. Give her something to watch.

Xavier and Decker groan as they helmet up and start to run. Jaylin looks over to Madison.

Jaylin: No more distracting my players!

Madison gestures as she grabs her belonging, but not before giving Xavier another flirtatious smile.

Scene 8: Myers' Apartment. Night

She enters the apartment with her belongings. She is surprised to see her mother in the kitchen cooking dinner. Shay takes a seat at the dining room table as her mother places a plate in front of her.

Shay: This looks amazing, mom.

Madeline takes a seat at the table.

Madeline: I learned a few things from my program. They really helped me become sober, and they helped me get a real job, so I'm caught up on our rent now. I can afford to start paying back my debt.

Shay can see how much her mother changed, and she couldn't be prouder.

Madeline: I heard that you are the new captain of the cheerleaders.

Shay: It's called Power Squad, but yeah. I'm excited. I've waited for four years for this moment. I just hope I do good.

Madeline: I know that you're going to do good. You are so talented. I couldn't be more proud of the young woman you're becoming. I just wish I could have seen it sooner.

Madeline tries to fight back the tears. Shay takes hold of her mother's hand.

Shay: You're here now.

Madeline wipes her tears and smiles, looking at her daughter.

Scene 9: Degrassi (The Dot). Night

The Dot is empty. Spinner begins to clear tables as Jordan begins to place chairs on top of the tables. Carina is seated in the back, continuously checking her phone.

Spinner: Hey. Sorry, but we're closing up.

Carina nods as she starts to place her belongings into her bookbag.

Scene 10: Outside Degrassi. Morning

Alicia is sitting with Jack, Red, and Decker at the picnic tables across from the school. She spots Shay leaving her mother's car with a smile. Red notices Alicia distracted.

Red: You okay?

Jack looks behind him to see Shay going into Degrassi.

Jack: I take it that you haven't told Shay you didn't want her to move out.

Red: Shay's moving out?

Alicia: Yeah. I just-.

Jack and Decker rise from the table.

Jack: I'll let you guys talk.

Decker: I'll catch you later.

They proceed to walk off. Red takes a seat closer to Alicia.

Red: Why didn't you mention Shay's moving out? I know how important she's been to you.

Alicia (saddened): I didn't want to be selfish. I should be the last person telling Shay that she shouldn't be with her mother. She supported me when I learned that I was adopted and stood by me when I got to know Sierra. What kind of friend would I be if I stopped her from giving her mother a second chance?

Red: I think you owe it to yourself and your friendship with Shay to have a conversation. You don't have to stop, but you should be honest.

Alicia: It's not that easy. Shay is going to stay if I tell her.

Red: I know you're going to do the right thing.

Red rises from the bench reaching out for Alicia's hand. The couple makes their way into Degrassi.

Scene 11: Degrassi (Hallways). Morning

Xavier approaches Madison with a smile as he leans against her locker.

Xavier: I saw you watching me at practice the other day.

Madison closes her locker and begins to make her way down the hall. She has a smile as Xavier trails behind her.

Madison: I wasn't watching you, but it's nice to know you were watching me.

Matthew appears in front of Xavier. He was silent and stoic.

Xavier: Boyfriend?

Madison laments in embarrassment.

Madison: Ugh, no, this is my brother.

Matthew takes Madison by the arm and escorts her away.

Matthew (irritated): What in the hell are you doing? Are you trying to ruin things for us at this school too?

Madison: I'm just trying to make friends. You're not my dad!

Madison snatches her arm away from Matthew's grip.

Matthew: I'm not dad, but I am your older brother.

Madison (sassily): You're only 2 minutes older. I know what I'm doing.

Madison storms away.

Scene 12. Degrassi (J.T Yorke Memorial Garden). Morning

K.C enters the memorial garden where Carina is reading. She looks up from her book to see him and starts to gather her things to leave.

K.C: I'm sorry about last night. Something came up, and I lost track of time.

Carina exits out into the halls. K.C follows behind her pleading his case, but Carina doesn't want to hear it. She abruptly stops and faces him. You can see the anger radiating from her.

Carina: You know I thought you wanted to be friends, but I was right about you, K.C. You only care about yourself. You play with people's emotions like some twisted game. I want no part in it.

Carina walks off, leaving K.C speechless.

Scene 13: Scott's House (Alicia's Room). Late Evening

Shay knocks on the door as she enters the room. She takes a seat on her former bed.

Shay: I'm going to miss our late-night conversation. All the gossip and boy talk.

Alicia chuckles as she takes a seat next to her.

Alicia: Promise me that nothing is going to change.

Shay: You're my best friend, Alicia. What can change between us? I will still see you at Degrassi. I will still be coming over every day to talk about all the hot topics.

A smile comes across Alicia's face. The two of them hug each other.

Shay: I can't believe you thought something was going to be different.

Alicia: I was just scared something else in my life was going to change. I don't think I can take anything more changes.

Shay takes Alicia's hands.
