"...And that is why I propose that my proposed holiday becomes an official, nationally-recognized holiday." Ron clicked a button on his handheld remote and the image on his laptop changed to a white screen with the words 'Question Time' in the middle. "At this time, I'd like to open things up to questions. We'll start with you in the front row."
Ron was pointing at Kim, who was his girlfriend, his roommate, and the only other person in the living room of their shared apartment. She was impressed with her man's enthusiasm, but still a bit confused about what she had been shown over the past ten minutes. Still, she needed to give Ron some props.
"You really enjoyed that Powerpoint class, huh?" she said with a slight smile on her face.
"You know, that class really showed me the power of a well-designed slide," he replied.
"But that's not my big question," she continued. "What I really want to know is… why?"
Ron clicked a button on the remote and the presentation's first slide returned to the screen. "Because Jerry Lawson deserves to be celebrated," he said. "Mr. Lawson, who was born on December 1, 1940, was an African-American engineer who led a team that developed the first video game cartridge. He also worked on-"
Kim threw a palm up to cut him off. "I know that, Ron. You told me all about it during the presentation. What I meant was… Why this? Why celebrate Lawson Day when you already celebrate Christmas and Hanukkah?"
"See, that's the beauty of Lawson Day," Ron replied. "It pulls elements from each of the four biggest celebrations of the season." He clicked the 'Advance' button a few times to bring up a new slide featuring four arrows pointing to a picture of Jeff Lawson. He hit the button again and one of the arrows was highlighted. "From Christmas: carols. The cartridge allows us to bring our joy to our friends and loved ones. We shall do the same with our voices."
Another press of the button highlighted a second arrow. "From Hanukkah: lights. On Lawson Day we shall light eight lights, one for each of the eight bits that represent when the cartridge truly came into its own.
A third button press. "From Kwanzaa: history. Mr. Lawson is just one of a vast number of often-overlooked African-American contributors to the STEM fields, and his day should be a celebration of all of their achievements. And from Ramadan…" He scratched the back of his neck instead of tapping the remote again. "To be honest, me and Wade are still working on that one. But we'll think of something."
Kim shook her head. "That's not what I mean either, Ron. What I'm saying is…" She searched for the right words in her mind. "You always come over to my fam's for Christmas and I always go to yours for Hanukkah. We're already getting to enjoy more than one holiday. Do we really need to invent one?"
"But that's just it," replied Ron. "You and me? We're golden. We're covered. But not everybody is so lucky." He once again began to cycle through a series of slides "What about the blended family that comes from two different countries? (click) What about people who don't have calendars? (click) What if our kids end up having friends who don't- (click)"
Ron covered his face in his hands. What little was visible turned a deep shade of crimson. "That slide shouldn't have been there," he muttered.
Kim's jaw dropped. It took her a few moments for her to comprehend what Ron had said, but once she had she was filled with emotions. Slack-jawed, she turned to her boyfriend. "Did you… Did you just say 'our kids?'"
Ron gave no response. Kim grabbed one of Ron's hands and tried to pull it away from his face, but he slipped out of her grasp. She tried again and again, finding success on her third attempt. Only once the hand was removed was Ron able to bring himself to look at her. He saw a red-headed angel with a reassuring smile.
"You don't have to hide from me," she said. "Just be honest. Have you… been thinking about kids?"
Ron pulled his shirt collar to cool himself and relieve the sudden urge to sweat."Well… a little," he admitted. He immediately threw his hands up. "Not now! Not super soon. But… maybe someday?"
Kim took his hand in hers. "Ron, that's okay," she said reassuringly. "I'm not in a hurry, but… I'd be lying if I said I never thought about it myself." Her cheeks began to take on the same color as her hair. "And I'd be lying if I said that I was thinking about having them with anyone other than you."
Ron gave his girlfriend a hopeful look. "Really?"
She nodded. "Really. And who knows? Maybe someday we'll all be celebrating together on Lawson Day."
Ron's eyes appeared to grow and glisten. "Does that mean…"
"Well we still have to work out a lot of details, but…" Kim started beaming. "Lawson Day has the Kim Possible Seal of Approval."
"BOOYAH!" cried Ron as he embraced his girlfriend in a crushing hug.
"On one condition," Kim added. The statement caused Ron to break the hug and take on a serious look.
"Anything."
Her smile slowly became a mischievous smirk. "We have to incorporate mistletoe."
"Done deal," cried Ron with a smile. He then noticed that Kim was closing the distance between their lips. "Oh, you mean right now."
Kim nodded, and Ron quickly complied.
"Ron?" called Monique as she walked through the apartment door. "I'm here to see you presentatiOH MY GOD!"
Kim and Ron broke their kiss and scrambled to separate themselves. Both of their faces instantly turned red in embarrassment. The redhead instinctively covered her chest with her arms, even though she was still fully dressed.
Monique crossed her arms and fought hard to keep a smirk from appearing on her face. "Really? Y'all just over here ruining the sanctity of Lawson Day? For shame."
Ron bowed his head in shame. "Sorry, Monique. I can… I can start the presentation over if you want."
The visitor's stern face softened. "That would be nice." Her lips curled into an ever-so-slightly wicked smile. "Just make sure you're hitting the buttons on your remote and not the ones on your girlfriend."
Kim launched a pillow at her friend's head. "MONIQUE!"
