"Woman"
Scene 1: Degrassi (Science Lab). Morning
Madison is working at her station when Xavier approaches her with a smile. Madison attempts to focus, but she is distracted by his presence.
Madison: You're going to make me cause an explosion.
She begins to pour a liquid substance into a beaker. Xavier moves closer.
Xavier (whispering): Have you found a partner yet?
Madison jots down notes into her notebook. She finally gives in and turns her attention to Xavier.
Madison: You're going to get us into trouble, sir.
Xavier: That's not an answer.
Madison begins to smile.
Ms. Teague: Mr. Matthews, please return to your station and allow Madison to finish her lab work.
Xavier salutes as he walks back over to his station. Madison returns to her project, but she couldn't help feel noticed for the first time in a long while.
OPENING CREDITS
Scene 2: Degrassi (Hallways). Morning
As the bell begins to ring, students fill the hallway. Xavier quickly chases behind Madison, trying to get her attention.
Xavier: Now that we're not in class, can I have the answer to my question?
Madison approaches her locker. Xavier leans against the wall giving her puppy dog eyes.
Madison: You're not going to drop this, are you?
Xavier: I will once you say yes to being my partner?
Madison switches out her books. She hesitates to answer but sighs and nods in agreement. Xavier tries to hide his excitement.
Xavier: I'm glad we were able to come to a mutual agreement.
Madison shakes her head as she closes the locker.
Madison: I'll see you later.
She proceeds to make her way down the hall.
Scene 3: Degrassi (Cafeteria). Afternoon
Ke'Anna joins Manny, who is reading alone at one of the tables. She sighs in frustration, receiving Manny's attention.
Manny: Everything okay?
Ke'Anna: No! I'm tired of being pregnant. I'm fat, and I'm constantly hungry. My hormones are on a constant rollercoaster. And don't forget that I also have a human growing inside me.
Manny: I'm sorry.
Ke'Anna: It's not your fault. I just wish Brandon was here with me.
Manny closes his book.
Manny: I know you probably miss him.
Ke'Anna: Don't you? Brandon was your best friend.
Manny: I wouldn't see best friends. If it weren't for me, he probably would have never been addicted to pills.
Ke'Anna: I'm glad that I have you. You've really been there for me through everything.
Manny: Of course. We're friends. That's what friends are supposed to do.
Ke'Anna: I know this might sound random, but do you maybe want to go out sometime?
An awkward silence happens between the two for a moment.
Manny: Yeah. Yeah, let's do it. Let's go out.
Ke'Anna begins to smile at the thought of dating again.
Scene 4: Mason's Home (Kitchen/Dining Room). Evening
Spinner places a bowl in the middle of the table. Emma sets Cristi into her highchair as Gavin takes a seat at the table.
Spinner (yelling): Jack! Dinner!
Jack makes his way downstairs, with Decker following behind.
Decker: I'll call you later.
Jack: You don't want to stay?
Decker kisses Jack on the cheek. He adjusts the bookbag on his back.
Decker: Maybe another time. I have some studying to do.
Emma and Spinner take a seat at the table.
Decker: It was nice seeing you again, Mr. and Mrs. Mason.
Jack escorts Decker to the door. Spinner's phone begins to ring. He rises from the table to take the call in the next room. Meanwhile, Emma tries to feed Cristi, but she keeps turning her head away from the spoon.
Jack returns to the dining room, taking a seat at the table. He proceeds to make his plate. Spinner reappears with a grim look on his face. Emma and Jack both sense the mood shifting.
Emma (worriedly): You're quiet, Spinner. Who was on the phone?
Spinner quietly takes a seat at the table.
Gavin: Daddy, okay?
Spinner: Yeah. Daddy's okay, buddy.
Spinner's statement didn't convince Emma.
Emma: Jack, can you please take Gavin and Cristi upstairs.
Jack complies. Emma waits until the room is clear. She moves closer to Spinner and takes hold of his hand.
Emma: Please talk to me, Spin.
Spinner: That was Dr. Platt. He wanted to call to say that the chemo doesn't seem to be working. They want to remove my other testicle to prevent the cancer from spreading.
Emma was speechless as she watched Spinner tries to process his feelings. In the background, Jack is listening in at the bottom of the steps. A tear begins to roll down his face as history begins to repeat itself.
Scene 5: Avery's House. (Madison's Bedroom). Night
Madison is studying at her desk. Posters of musical heartthrobs, stuffed animals, and polaroid pictures of herself covered Madison's room. She suddenly hears a knock at the door.
Madison: Come in. The door is open.
The door opens. Madison looks over her shoulder to see Matthew. Matthew enters the room and takes a seat on her bed.
Madison: What do you want, Matty?
Matthew: You changed the room around.
Madison: I had to find a way to get rid of the teenage angst that was lingering. Did you know this room smelt like metal and death?
Matthew: Sounds fun.
Madison closes her book to face her brother.
Madison: You didn't come in here just to talk about my room's décor.
Matthew: I told you before you shouldn't be flirting with anyone at Degrassi, let alone Xavier.
Madison (annoyed): You're not my father!
Matthew: I wouldn't have to act like your father if you didn't act like this!
Matthew quickly becomes remorseful.
Matthew: I didn't mean that, Madi.
Madison: LEAVE! NOW! GET OUT OF MY ROOM!
Madison begins to hit Matthew until he hurries out of the room. She slams the door shut. She falls onto her bed with tears in her eyes.
Scene 6: Degrassi (Main Foyer/Hallways). Morning
Madison enters the school. Xavier quickly emerges behind her taking her books and begins to carry them.
Madison: I appreciate the help, but I'm not helpless.
They continue to walk down the hall.
Xavier: You didn't call last night. I was expecting a call.
Madison: Were you really? Maybe it will happen when you least expect it.
Xavier: So, what I'm hearing is that I will be getting a call.
Madison pauses as she playfully rolls her eyes.
Madison: Are you always this persistent, Xavier?
Xavier: Not really, but I think this time is a little different. It's worth being a little persistent.
Madison: I need to get to class. Thanks for carrying my books.
Madison takes her books from Xavier. She kisses him on the cheek and walks off, leaving Xavier on cloud 9.
Scene 7: The Dot. Afternoon
Jordan is working at the counter, handing customers their drinks. Jack takes a deep breath and approaches the counter.
Jordan: Spinner is not here.
Jack: I'm actually here to see you. I know you said that it's had to be my friend, but I could use my best friend right now.
Jordan could see through Jack's attempt to hold it together.
Scene 7: The Dot (Alleyway). Afternoon
Jack takes a seat at the bottom of the stairs.
Jordan: I think Spinner is going to be okay. I remember you told me that he had beaten this cancer before.
Jack: It was the same with my dad, he fought the cancer nonstop, but eventually it got to a point where he gave up and lost. I can't lose my brother.
Jordan takes a seat next to Jack.
Jordan: Spinner is more than a brother to you, Jack. He's been your father for the past few years. I think your just afraid of losing another father. Spinner is going to fight because he has you, Emma, Gavin, and Cristi.
Jack: You're right. You're always right, Jordan. I'm sorry that things ended the way it did between us. I miss you, and I know that's not what you want to hear, but I do.
Jordan: I miss you too, Jack. I love you. I probably will always love you, but I can't support your relationship with Decker. He put you through too much for me to just forgive him.
Jack: I understand. Thanks for talking to me.
Jack rises from the steps. He starts to walk off.
Jordan: Hey!
Jack turns around.
Jordan: I can't support your relationship, but maybe we can try the friend's thing again.
Jack smiles and nods as he continues to make his way back inside the Dot.
Scene 8: Little Miss Steaks. Night
Manny and Ke'Anna are being escorted to their table. They take a seat and begin to look over the menu. Isaiah nervously approaches the table with a notepad.
Isaiah (anxious): Welcome to Little Miss Steaks! Can I start you off with some drinks?
Manny: First day?
Isaiah: That obvious, huh?
Ke'Anna scans the menu once again.
Ke'Anna: A water is fine.
Manny: Same.
Isaiah proceeds to walk off. Manny and Ke'Anna sit in awkward silence.
Ke'Anna: I'm glad we're doing this.
Manny: Yeah. Me too.
Silence once again. Isaiah returns once again with their waters. Moments later, we see the two finishing up their meal still in silence.
Ke'Anna: I'm going to run to the bathroom.
Manny nods in silence. Isaiah returns with the tab. Manny lays a few bills onto the table as Ke'Anna returns. They proceed to exit.
Scene 9: Degrassi (Locker Rooms). Morning
The boys begin to fill the locker rooms. They start to undress and wind down after a long morning practice. Xavier runs into the locker room with nothing but energy.
Xavier: BASKETBALL SEASON BABY!
Teammate #1: You might want to cover up, fellas! I heard our boy Xavier plays for the other team.
The team begins to laugh. Xavier becomes confused.
Xavier: What are you talking about?
Teammate #3: There's a rumor that the new transfer is a guy.
Xavier: Transfer? The only new transfer is Madis..
Xavier begins to piece together the comments.
Teammate #2: We still like you, Xavier, but no free peeks.
Xavier slams him into the locker.
Teammate #1: Hey! Calm down. It's not his fault you got tricked by the guy.
Xavier quickly storms out of the locker room. He was not only furious but embarrassed that his team thought he was gay.
Scene 10: Degrassi (Hallways). Morning
Manny notices Ke'Anna down the hall at her locker. He was not ready for this conversation, but he makes his way towards her.
Manny: Hey.
Ke'Anna: I'm guessing you're here to tell me there is no second date in our future. If you are, then you can save it. I agree.
Manny: I don't want to ruin our friendship, and I need to focus on being sober, not in a relationship.
Ke'Anna: I totally agree. I think I only asked because I miss Brandon. And with me being pregnant, I just don't see what guy would want to date me.
Manny: Don't do that. You're beautiful. Any guy would be lucky to date you.
Ke'Anna leans in and kisses Manny.
Ke'Anna: The shortest relationship I ever had.
Manny begins to laugh.
Manny: I'm sorry. How about I walk you to class?
Ke'Anna: Such a gentleman.
Ke'Anna closes her locker, and the two proceed to walk down the hall.
Scene 11: Degrassi (Hallway). Afternoon
Madison exits out the classroom. She notices Xavier at his locker and waves to get his attention. He ignores her. Madison proceeds to make her way towards him. Xavier slams his locker shut. He knocks the books out of her hand.
Madison (upset): What the hell, Xavier!
He pushes her against the locker. They are starting to attract attention to themselves. Madison was confused and beginning to become scared.
Xavier: You're a guy!
Madison's heart drops. Matthew breaks through the crowd when he notices Madison being harassed. He pushes Xavier away.
Matthew: Get off her!
Xavier: Move, Emo boy! This is between him and me.
Matthew: She's my sister, so if you have an issue with her, you have an issue with me.
Emma arrives to break the crowd up.
Emma: Mr. Matthews! In my office now.
Madison runs away in embarrassment. Xavier grabs his things and follows Emma down the hall.
Scene 12. Mason's Home (Living Room). Night
Emma enters the living room to see Spinner having a drink in the dark alone.
Emma: Are you coming back to bed, Spin.
Spinner: I'm sorry. I'll be up in a minute.
Emma takes a seat on the couch next to Spinner.
Emma: I wish you would talk to me, Spin. You're scaring me.
Spinner: If I get this operation, then my entire life will change, Em. We won't be able to have any more kids. They say I might lose the ability to use my equipment. Not to mention if I have this surgery, it will lower my sex drive.
Emma: We have two beautiful kids. One was born early, and the other was a miracle in itself.
Emma rests her head on Spinner's arm.
Spinner: Before the operation, I want us to have another baby.
Emma begins to chuckle. She raises her head to see that Spinner is serious.
Emma: Spin, I don't know if I want more kids. It's been a stretch with the three we already have. Remember, I turned down that new position.
Spinner: It different when you decide not to have kids is one thing, but to lose the option altogether. I know it's going to be tight, but my perspective changed. I want another baby.
Emma: We will talk to Dr. Platt about the option of another kid, but no guarantee that we will or can have another child.
Spinner kisses Emma on the forehead as Emma cuddles into his arms. They remain in silence on the couch.
Scene 13: Avery's House. (Basement/ Matthew's Bedroom). Night
Madison makes her way into the basement. Matthew's bedroom had a dungeon aesthetic to it. It was dark and lined with skulls. Matthew was practicing on his guitar. He notices Madison on the steps.
Madison: Hey.
He places his guitar back on its stand as Madison looks for a seat but notices the coffin-shaped bed and remains on the stairs. She was terrified of her brother, but primarily due to his weirdness.
Matthew: What do you want?
Madison: I just wanted to say thank you for protecting me.
Matthew: You're my little sister.
Madison (in sync with Matthew): By 2 minutes.
Matthew: I know.
Madison turns around and is about to head up the stairs.
Matthew: You're going to find a boyfriend one day.
Madison sends a smile Matthew's way as she continues up the stairs.
