In Which Addison Gets Hit by the Train
"How do you treat pancreatic divisum? Izzie?"
"Oh, Cristina. If you're not gonna let us sleep, you at least have to let me put coffee in my cup."
"Okay, so go. No one's stopping you."
"I'm too tired to go."
"Here, give me your cup," I offer since I don't have exams this afternoon. I initially came downstairs to make breakfast for Meredith; some good brain food to help with exams this afternoon but when I entered the kitchen, all of the interns were already hovering around the coffee pot.
"Pancreatic divisum."
"Dorsal duct sphincterotomy," Alex answered.
I pass Izzie her coffee, "Here."
"Not your turn, but correct," she said handing Alex the cards. "You do me."
"I can't believe O'Malley's missing this," Alex scoffed. "How's he gonna be ready?"
"Oh, you're kidding, right?" she shook her head, "We have Callie's cards, but George has…"
"George has Callie," Izzie said with a little bit of jealousy in her voice and it makes me think… Is there something going on with the two of them?
Alex distracted me with his question, "What's the most frequent cause of diarrhea in hospitalized patients?"
"Is she coming to this bachelorette thing tonight?"
"Rotavirus," Cristina said to Alex then turns to Izzie, "Yes."
"It's ," I whispered as I sipped my cup. That answer is still fresh in my mind.
When Alex tell her she's wrong, she guessed again, "Uh, no! No, no, no. Uh, salmonella."
"Diarrhea in hospitalized patients," Alex emphasized.
Meredith walked into the kitchen and up to me, "The most frequent cause of diarrhea in hospitalized patients is which can lead to toxic megacolon, perforation, sepsis and death." She took my coffee mug out of my hands and left the kitchen, "That's what killed Susan."
"Is she okay?" Izzie asked and now they're all looking towards me.
I waved them off as I turned away to pour more coffee, "Oh, she's fine."
"Dude, she's messed up."
"Of course she's messed up," Izzie commented. "Susan was basically her surrogate mother."
"Yeah, her fake mom was better than her real mom," Cristina explained.
Izzie turned to me, "Is she going to the hospital first or the funeral?"
"First to the hospital, then to the funeral, then to the test this afternoon," I explain.
Alex shook his head, "Has she even studied?"
"Yeah, she studied. She's fine. She just needs to be left alone, okay?" Cristina demanded, "So what's inside the carotid sheath? Izzie?"
I make my way outside to the car where Meredith is waiting in the passenger seat. I offer her some yogurt, two boiled eggs and a bag of nuts, "Brain food?"
"Thank you," she replied leaning over to kiss me softly.
I push some hair out of her face and smile softly, "Look, I… I know this is an… an impossible day for you. So… I just want to say one thing. I brought a black dress, just in case."
"Thank you," she said again sipping her coffee. "But I think this is something I need to do by myself."
"Okay," I nodded as we made our way to the hospital.
Small talk just doesn't feel right and I don't want to push her into talking about Susan so we just sit quietly on the drive; my hand gently resting on her thigh. When we pull up to the hospital, Meredith's pager goes off immediately so I pull up to the front to let her out. I kiss her softly and watch her run off inside the hospital.
"If you need me, just…" I call out but she's already gone. "…let me know."
I parked and made my way into the hospital through the lobby. I barely make it through the oversized double doors before my pager goes off and I make a beeline towards the ER. I pass by the intern locker room and I see Cristina run out of it, heading in the same direction as me. We both run into Dr. Burke.
I nod, "Preston"
"Good morning, Addison," Preston acknowledges me before turning to his fianceé, "Oh, Cristina."
"What is MEN Syndrome? Don't answer that."
"The minister needs to see a copy of your vows before the wedding."
"Multiple endocrine neoplasia," she said ignoring him. "Yes."
"Look, I know it's test day, and I'm not supposed to be talking about the wedding on test day . But since tomorrow's our wedding day―"
"You have five seconds. Go."
"Bill Adams can't make it. I have no best man."
"Oh, no. Baby, I'm so sorry."
"And I need your vows by…"
"Okay, time's up."
"Cristina…"
"Test day."
"What am I supposed to tell the minister?" Preston called after her.
She disappears down the hall, "Test day."
"They paged you guys, too?" I asked as I met up with Sloan, Saroyan, Torres and Bailey in the ER.
Burke walked up to us, "Well, I think they paged all of us."
"That can't be good," I said.
Mark turns to Miranda, "Why were we all paged?"
"Oh, because search and rescue found those lost climbers who were up on Mount Rainier," she said and we're all in shock.
Those four climbers have been missing for a few days now. Richard comes up to the group and nods, "People, the climbers are on their way."
"Any specifics?" Dr. Saroyan asked.
Richard explained, "They found only three so far. One's still missing. They're reporting severe dehydration with traumatic head and chest injuries. Dr. Bailey, Dr. Torres, you'll be my trauma team."
"Bad day not to have interns," Miranda scoffed.
Mark questioned, "What?"
"Today's the intern exam."
"You'll all have to do your own heavy lifting today. And if you see an intern, which you will, because they can't help themselves, turn them away until after the exam. The ambulances are five minutes away. It's time to do what we do best, people. Let's roll," Richard clapped and everyone disbursed except he, Preston and I.
Richard smiled, "So how you feelin', Preston? You ready?"
"I'm always ready for surgery."
"I think he's talking about the wedding," I acknowledged.
Richard nodded as we all start heading towards the ambulance bay, "Yeah, tomorrow's the big day."
"And apart from the fact that Cristina hasn't written her vows, my best man just canceled, and it's still raining…"
"He's not ready."
"You're never ready. I certainly wasn't. But then… The minute I saw Adele coming down that aisle… well…" he paused to reminisce. "Have you picked your best man?"
"Actually, chief, I…"
"You can't be his best man," I cut him off before he even asks.
Richard frowned, "Why not?"
"Because it's unethical. It's a conflict of interest."
"Actually, Addison… I was… going to ask you."
"Ask me what?" I question. With Preston just staring back at me, it makes me realize that he meant to be his best man. "Really?"
"We have been through a lot this year," he suggested.
I shrugged, "Oh, okay. What do I have to do?"
"Well, traditionally the best man plans the bachelor party," Richard explained.
I turn to Preston, "Drinks at Joe's after work?"
"Yeah, I knew you were the man for the job," he smiled just as the ambulance arrived.
The paramedics hop out of the back of the truck. We help them get the gurney down on the ground before we all crowd around them.
"Dale Winick, 32, B.P. 90 over 50,tachy to 110. Severe frostbite, but no obvious internal injuries," they say about the first patient out of the ambulance.
Richard gasped pulling the sheet off of him revealing his hands covered in ice, "Got it. My god."
"Wow," I say trying not to gag. That's the worst case of frostbite I've ever seen.
Paramedic nodded, "Yeah, those aren't gloves."
We get our patient into a trauma room before he woke up screaming, "Please someone tell me are the other guys okay?"
"They're right behind you, Dale," Richard calmed him. "We'll let you know."
"Get him a tet-tox and push a gram of cefazolin IV," Stacie called out. "And let's get some warm, circulating water to start thawing his hands."
"I'll get someone on it," I said as I stepped out into the hall, pulling Dr. Torres with me. "Callie."
"That's crazy right?" she said and as I'm about to reply I notice the interns peaking through a window nearby. I look to Callie and she nods, "I'm on it. Go ahead."
"Thank you," I nod.
I really just wanted to check on Meredith. She was worrying me this morning and I know she's dark and twisty inside. I know how I was when I lost Susan and my mother… I didn't need to be alone then and she wouldn't let me. I just want to be there for her.
Walking up on them, I overhear their conversation. Izzie fussed, "We're supposed to be studying. If Bailey finds out we're down here…"
"We are studying," Cristina replied. "How do you treat frostbite?"
"Re-warm, avoid early surgery unless there's a deep infection due to auto-amputation," George replied.
Cristina smirked, "See? Studying."
"Okay, okay, Mr. Meltzer, Mr. Meltzer, I'm gonna need you to save your breath, okay?" I turned around to see Dr. Burke bringing another frostbitten survivor into the ER. "We're gonna give you some pain meds."
"It hurts."
"You have several broken ribs, which are compromising your breathing. Do you understand, Andy?"
"Did you see that?"
"That is freaky," Meredith replied.
I turn around and we're staring eye-to-eye at each other. We both smile but I quickly turn on my look of disapproval before opening the door, "You all are supposed to be studying."
"But I think that was a flail chest. I've never seen one before," Cristina whined. "Come on. Come on. Why, oh, why does today have to be test day?"
"Oh, I know," Meredith said sadly.
I walk up to her, kissing her softly on the head, "Look… I bet you if you talk to the chief, he'll let you take the test later with the funeral and everything."
"I don't need to take the test later."
"Okay."
"Can I get a little help here?" Dr. Sloan called out.
Meredith gave me a knowing look before I ran off to help.
The newest patient being wheeled into the ER screamed, "I can't feel my legs!"
"Jack, you could have a spinal injury," Mark explained to him. "You need to stop fighting me and stay calm, okay? You're only making it worse. Where are we going?"
"You guys are going to trauma three," I said reading the chart.
Mark nodded, "All right. Trauma three."
Dr. Saroyan walks out of Trauma One and up to me at the nurse's station, "Nice work, Dr. Montgomery."
"Oh, thanks," I smile. "I was just directing traffic."
"I was being sarcastic," Stacie frowned.
I rolled my eyes, "Oh, like brain surgery is so impressive."
"It is, actually."
"Oh, hush. Ooh, I'm throwing Burke a thing at Joe's tonight. You should come," I offered just as Joe and Walker walk through the ER doors, "Speaking of…"
"Addison," Joe called out as they walked up to them.
I smiled, "Joe, Walter. What are you guys doing here? Everything okay?"
"Yeah, we came to see you, actually," Walter explained.
Joe nodded awkwardly, "Uh, we need a consult."
"Don't tell me you're pregnant."
"Uh, no, but… our birth mom is."
"Potential birth mom," Walter corrected.
Joe explained, "She hasn't actually picked us yet."
"You're adopting?"
"Well, we filed an application, but we never thought we'd get picked," Joe said quickly. "You know, bar-owning gays don't get picked very often."
"I guess having a baby is easier than we thought."
"Yes, I guess so…" I say trailing off.
Joe pressed on, "So I was hoping you could take a look at her? You know, kicking the tires, checking underneath the hood?"
"Car metaphors? No," Walter shook his head disgusted.
I smile, "I'd be happy to. Just, uh, give me a call and we'll set up an appointment."
"Well, see, that's the thing. Uh, she lives in Portland, and she's only gonna be in Seattle for one day, so…"
"She's kind of here now." "Now, as in…" I questioned as Joe stepped aside to reveal a pregnant woman. "Now. Well, okay. Let's get you all into a room."
I get them into a trauma room until I can find them an actual room but I can't focus all of my attention on them right now. I need to see Meredith. The funeral for Susan Grey is in twenty minutes and I really wanted to be there with her. I see a glimpse of her hair as she walks past the room I'm in with Cristina and I step outside just in time to see Thatcher walk into the ER.
"What is biloma?" Cristina chased her down. "What is biloma?"
"Cristina, I really don't have time…" she rolled her eyes. "A biloma is an intraperitoneal bile fluid collection."
"Excellent."
"Okay? I'll be fine."
"Meredith," I said stepping into her view.
She kissed me softly and smiled, "Hi baby, I gotta go."
"Your dad," I said, pointing in the direction of him.
Meredith made her way over to him, "Hey. I… I… I was just on my way…"
"No, I… I came here to tell you you're not wanted. I don't want you at any funeral, Meredith," he finished.
I walked up to him, "Thatcher, why don't you come…"
"She trusted you!" he shrugged me off and turned back to Meredith. "She came to you for help, and you killed her. You did. You killed my wife. You took her from me."
"Dad!" Molly called out running up behind him.
Thatcher still screamed, "So I don't… I don't want to see you. I don't want to hear from you, and I don't want you anywhere near her funeral. You understand me? Do you understand me?"
"Dad, dad, come on. This…" she shook her head, pulling him away. "Lexie's waiting in the car. We have to go, Dad. We have to go now."
"She was everything to me, all I had. She was all I had. She was all I had," he said as he walked away.
Meredith took off towards the locker room and I followed. Richard met up with me outside the door right as I was about to enter. I look at him and sigh, "It's Meredith. I'm worried about her."
He nodded, entering the locker room before me. George and Izzie are both here preparing for their test. Cristina is sitting with Meredith trying to calm her nerves, "And you know the material. You're gonna get a high score… not as high as mine… but everything's gonna be fine."
"What are you guys all standing around for?" Alex said as he entered the room. "Don't we have a test to… what happened?"
"You people need to head upstairs. Dr. Grey will join you in a minute," Richard said and everyone leaves but the three of us. "You're not to blame for Susan Grey's death, and you know it, and your father knows it, too. He's just... Well, he's never been the best communicator, and he just lost his wife."
"Stop acting like my surrogate father."
"Meredith, I'm… just…"
"Because you slept with my mother, that does not make you my father," she said as she got up, grabbed my hand and stormed out of the room.
We made our way upstairs to the test room, in silence, hand-in-hand.I hugged her long and hard before she turned to me and nodded. She opened the door to head inside and I could hear the proctor asking the interns to take their seats. I stand here for a moment, lost in thought until Dr. Saroyan walked up to me.
She shook her head, "Man, those three guys? There's a fourth guy. Still out there somewhere… They say they fell 100 feet because of the storm and when they came to, they were midair and their friend wasn't moving. So they left him to get to the other side of the mountain."
"That's horrible. You never leave a man behind."
"Yeah… I feel like there's more to the story. It feels like they're covering something up."
"The truth will come out eventually; it always does," I said as my pager went off letting me know that Joe and Walter have finally been put into a room. As I walk away, I call out, "See you later, at Joe's?"
She nodded as I made my way downstairs and to the wing where I would find the happy couple. I smiled as I walked into the room. It's good to see we're already in the midst of awkward conversation.
"We… we don't have to be here if you're uncomfortable," Joe explained.
Rina shrugged, "Oh, no, it's fine. Un…unless you're uncomfortable."
"Actually, uh, I… I…"
"He's fine," Walter cut him off.
I chuckled, "So, Rina, how are you feeling? Any problems?"
"Just the fact that I'm huge, and I have, like, the worst heartburn I've ever had in my life."
"I can prescribe an antacid for that. The first thing we're gonna do is take a look at the baby," I said as I grabbed the ultrasound gel. "This might be a little cold."
"This baby deserves parents who are gonna make it their whole world, you know?"
"Y…you know we're gay, right?" Joe stuttered out.
Rina smiled, "I figured, with you both being boys and everything. The other couple I'm considering, they're, like, oh, 40. She's been trying to get pregnant for ten years. It's so sad."
"There's the heartbeat."
"Wow."
"There's, like, a person inside of me."
"Actually…" I said moving over a little bit. "There are two people. Twins."
"Oh, my god," she gasped.
Walter laughed, "Oh, my god."
"Oh, my god. I think I'm gonna pass out," is the only thing I heard before the thump on the ground.
I bend down to check his pulse, "Joe? Joe? I need help in here!"
Joe's up a few seconds later and we get him into a chair. He's okay; just still a little in shock. My alarm went off only minutes later and I rushed out of the room. The test is over and I made way upstairs to greet Meredith when she comes out. I made it to the nearest nurse's station right as the interns walked out of the room. I watched as George called after Meredith as she just walked away.
He turned over to Cristina and said, "She didn't write anything on the test. She didn't answer a single question. She just sat there."
"Wait, G...George, just...just give her a second," Cristina said nervously as Meredith walked right past me.
I called out as she walked on not even acknowledging me, "Hey, Meredith?"
"Don't worry. I've got it," Cristina tried to reassure me as she followed her.
Izzie, George, Alex and I follow shortly after and are just in the hallway hovering outside of the locker room. I shift on my feet uncomfortably as Izzie rambled nervously, "It's not like she actually flunked. She… she just didn't write anything."
"It's kinda like she actually flunked," Alex said bluntly.
George spoke up, "One guy two years ago, he was on call three nights before his test. He slept through the whole thing. He had to repeat his intern year."
"She can't repeat her intern year. It's pathetic," Izzie said turning to me. "We have to do something. Addison."
"Okay, I don't know. I mean, Meredith…" I trailed off and luckily all of their pagers go off so I don't have to keep speaking because frankly, I have no clue what to do right now.
George checked his pager, "It's Bailey. We gotta go."
"We gotta go," Cristina said as she came out of the locker room.
Izzie protested, "We can't just leave her here."
"You got a better idea?" Alex asked as the all walk away.
I walked into the locker room and sat down next to Meredith. She doesn't speak so I spoke first, "It's like we're on a train that's going 200 miles an hour, and it would just be so nice to get off and just… stand on the platform, just for a minute."
"Looks like I'm off the train."
"Our parents died. When a parent dies, it doesn't make any sense. So you make a lot of really terrible decisions… that you're gonna end up having to live with for a long time."
"You should go. You are still on the train. It's okay," she said as my pager goes off. "You have to go."
"Meredith…" I protested but she shook her head.
She screamed, "Go. Go. Go, go!"
Don't you guys just love a cliffhanger? I would've crammed the entire day into this one chapter but then I wouldn't be able to make the next chapter as dramatic as it could be! Hehe. Anyway, let me know what you think. Please :) Let me know what you'd like to see in the chapters to come and in the sequel. And please, give me title suggestions! Thank you so much for taking out the time to read this. You all don't know how much I appreciate it. ❥ Kae
