It's funny because I keep telling you guys that the next chapter is going to be the last but then I just can't stop writing, lol! So, just in case the next chapter isn't the last then I'm not going to say it this time. Then watch, it will actually be the last chapter, lol! Anyway, I'm an indecisive Libra so ya'll just have to work with me. While you read, please think of some title suggestions for the sequel! I love you all! Happy readings :) ❥ Kae
In Which Addison is Stalked by Pregnant People
"I'd probably be something crazy like an astronaut or cool like a CIA agent and go deep undercover," I giggle as we sit on my couch eating pizza and drinking beer. "What would you do if you couldn't be a surgeon? What's your dream job?"
"Me?" she contemplated. "Honestly? I wouldn't know how to live if I couldn't be a surgeon. I can't see myself doing anything else. It's a part of me; it's in my blood."
Honestly? I wouldn't know how to live if I couldn't be a surgeon. I wouldn't know how to live if I couldn't be a surgeon. I wouldn't know how to live if I couldn't be a surgeon. That thought runs through my head over and over and over again as I make my way to the ER to answer my page. It worries me. I hate to think of Meredith as that vulnerable but with our history, how do I know she won't go and do something drastic? If she can't be a surgeon, what's next for us? Will our relationship survive this?
"How do they expect me to focus on anything else right now?" I mutter to myself as I enter the ER.
Adele catches my eye as she waved me over to her bedside, "Addison!"
"Adele. What are you doing here? What happened?"
"A fender bender. I'm fine. I told the ER resident I'm fine, but…"
"Alright, I'm gonna page Richard," I say as I pulled out my pager. "I'll let him know you're here."
"Oh, you will do no such thing, Addison. Richard cannot know I'm here. We're separated," she admitted and now Richhard's late nights at the hospital make sense. "My life is none of his business. I'm serious."
"Okay. Uh, all right. Well… let's get you checked out," I say as I wash my hands and put on gloves. "Do you have any, um, any pain, any… anything?"
"Well… there's one thing I should probably mention. I'm pregnant," she said so quietly that I barely heard her.
My stomach gets caught in my throat and it takes everything out of me not to scream. I nod excusing myself. I take long deep breaths on my walk to retrieve the ultrasound machine. I've encountered so many pregnant women today that I've lost count.
After a pelvic exam, I turn on the machine and grab the gel. I squeeze a little bit onto my hands to warm it up a little before layering it on her stomach. A tiny blob pops up on the screen and soon we hear the soft hum of the baby's heartbeat. I finish up and turn to Adele, "The baby looks fine on the ultrasound, but you are spotting a little. It's nothing severe, but I would like to hold you overnight for observation."
"Overnight?" she questioned as she shook her head. "Oh, no. I'm sorry."
"But…" I start to protest and she gives me the look. "for just a couple of hours at least. Look, it could be nothing. But a pregnancy at your age is…"
"Terrifying? Embarrassing?"
"I was going to say a miracle."
"I don't know. I resigned myself to the fact, a long time ago, that I would never have kids," she admitted. "Yet here I am, 52, about to be divorced and pregnant."
"May I ask who… the father is?"
"You may ask."
"Look, all I'm saying is that if Richard finds out that you're walking around his hospital carrying another man's baby…"
"Richard is not going to find out because neither one of us are going to tell him," she said simply. "I need my discharge papers, please."
"You'll have to sign an AMA form since you're leaving against medical advice," I said trying to persuade her to stay but she doesn't budge.
I give in. Walking out of the room and I literally run into Richard Webber. I spit out, "Chief."
"Addison. I just heard the news," he said and that sick feeling returns to my stomach.
I read his face and he looks more excited than anything else so I ask, "You… you heard? Who told you? What… what did you hear?"
"That Joe and Walter are adopting," he says and I can breathe again. "Is the birth mom in here? I'd love to put in a good word."
"Oh, no, no, no. Chief, you don't want to go in there," I stop him. "It's a young girl… in the stirrups, you know, her equipment exposed, right? You don't want to see that."
"No," he looks disgusted. "I… I don't want to see that."
"I think Rina may still be here somewhere though," I offer.
Richard rushes off thanking me as I head to the nurse's station. I fill in Adele's chart and pass it on to the ER resident so they can start her discharge papers while I head back towards Meredith. Thoughts of pregnancy clouds my mind and I shake away the thoughts. There's too much going on today for me to even try to think about something else… especially something that would never happen.
Opening the door to the locker room, I see that Meredith hasn't moved a muscle. She's in the exact same position that I left her in. I sit down next to her and lays her head on my chest. We're only alone for a moment until Alex walks into the room.
Meredith looks up at him, "Are you going to give me an inspirational speech, too?"
"No," he says sitting down next to her.
I kiss her softly and get to leave, "I'll let you two have a moment alone."
"What are we gonna do?" Izzie stops me the moment I walked out of the locker room.
I step back a little before explaining, "There's nothing to do."
"What?" she looks at me like I'm crazy.
I suggest, "you can sit with her?"
"Uh… okay," Izzie walks off in the other direction.
I walk past the curtain where the climbers are and I can't help but overhear their conversation, "What were we supposed to do, hmm, carry him down the mountain?"
"He was our friend, and we left him there."
"If we hadn't, we'd be dead, too. You know that."
"No, Jack. Dale is right. You don't… you don't do that. You don't climb all the way up there together just to leave a man behind."
Their conversation sets off a light bulb in my head. I have to find the chief. Luckily he isn't far… I find him up on my floor looking for Joe, Walter and Rina still. I walk up to him with a smile, "Hi, chief."
"I got to say hello to Joe's lady," he says all smiles.
I smile back anxiously, "Oh, that's great! I mean, I'd love to talk about the fluffy stuff but I'm here about Meredith. There's got to be something we can do. I mean, she sat for the exam but she didn't write anything on the test."
"What do you mean she didn't write anything on the test?"
"She just sat there. I don't think she even wrote her name," I explain.
Richard nods and turns to walk away, "I'll see what I can do."
"Thank you," I say as my pager goes off. It's Callie. I look at the time and rush up to the OR floor.
Callie's going to be performing three surgeries at one time. I can't miss it. Plus, talking to her could help get my mind off things. We've gotten a lot of time to bond over these past few weeks and I consider her a great friend. Luckily, I caught Callie in the scrub room still prepping for surgery.
I walked into the scrub room and sighed, "I'm being stalked by pregnant women."
"You're an obstetrician," she said with confusion in her voice.
I finally admit, "And barren. You know, apparently as a healthy, successful woman in her 30s, I don't deserve to have a baby. Maybe I'd have a fighting chance if were 50 or a teenager or a member of the AARP? I haven't mustered up the courage to tell Meredith yet. I found out last week…"
"Oh, that sucks," she said worriedly. "It really…"
"No," I cut her off. "Oh, no, not you too."
"Oh, no, no, I'm not. I'm just… I'm thinking about it. That's all," she shrugged as she finished scrubbing in. "Oh, I don't know. I don't even know. It's just that with George everything's happening so fast."
"Don't let me and my fossilized eggs discourage you," I joked.
Callie looked at me sadly, "Are we gonna be friends still if I get pregnant?"
"Absolutely not," I shake my head but I smile as I exit the room. "I'll be in the gallery."
I watch Callie, literally, run in and out of the OR to the scrub room to yet another OR. None of the climbers were going to last the day without surgery so we had to do them all at once. They all required intensive ortho surgery which met Callie had to play the role of Supergirl.
My pager goes off a little bit later pulling me out of my thoughts. I'll have to catch up with Callie after I take care of this. It's from Richard. I'm hoping he has come up with a way to help Meredith. When I find him, he tells me to bring Meredith up to the room to sit for the exam. They're letting her retake the exam! I basically run to the intern locker room almost knocking Izzie over in the process.
"I think I figured out a way to help Meredith so you don't have to worry anymore," I called over my shoulder before entering the locker room. "Come with me."
"Okay," she says quietly and lets me escort her out of the room towards the elevators. I press the button for the top floor and Meredith looks at me confused, "Where are we going?"
"I'm about to show you," I said as we stepped off the elevator. I escort her to a conference room and open the door revealing Richard. "Here she is."
"Thank you, Addie. You can go now," he said.
I let go of Meredith's hand, "I'll be waiting right outside."
"You don't have to," she stopped me, grabbing my hand again.
I shake my head, "Shut up."
"If you called me here to lecture me…"
"There's a copy of the intern's exam on the table, some number 2 pencils, a bottle of water and a sandwich if you get hungry," he cut her off. "I'll send a proctor in, and I'll come back in a few hours and check on you."
"You are not my father."
"I know that. I know," he says as she breaks down crying. He pulls her into a hug and I feel like I'm intruding so I leave, closing the door behind me.
I walk out of the room to all of her friends waiting outside. I look at Izzie confused and she shrugged, "We wanted to be here for her."
"Okay," I say simply.
Alex sighed, "Well, at least test day is almost over."
"Speak for yourself. I'm getting married tomorrow," Cristina said as I got paged by Mark.
Their surgeries must be over. I hurried off towards the OR and I meet up with Callie and Mark as they come out the scrub room. I bump into Callie playfully, "Nice work… three surgeries at the same time."
"I performed four osteosyntheses, amputated two hands and stabilized one spine in two hours."
"Impressive… Looks like Bailey's not a shoo-in for chief resident after all," Mark said as Miranda walked up to join us.
She questioned Callie, "Uh, you're in the running for chief resident, too?"
"Yeah. Why wouldn't I be?"
"No," she shook her head. "Uh, it makes sense. I just… I hadn't thought about it. That's all."
"I'm good at what I do, Bailey," Callie said determined. "I'm focused, I'm disciplined, I'm… I'm more than qualified to be chief resident. Look, we all know that you're the chief's favorite, but that doesn't mean I can't take a shot."
Speaking of shots, I get a text from Preston saying he's walking over to Joe's. I can't believe this day is finally coming to an end. I wait for Mark to change then we walk over to Joe's bar together.
Hanging up our coats at the door, we immediately catch Preston's gaze. We sit down at his table as the door opened and in walked Stacie. Preston waved her over, "Hey, Dr. Saroyan."
"Hey," she said walking over. "This is what you invited me to? This is your big bachelor party?"
"It was last-minute," I shrugged. "I needed some warm bodies."
"Which would explain why I'm here," Mark laughed.
I shook my head, "Yeah, and so you could buy the first round."
"I'll give you a hand with those," Stacie said as the two walked up to the bar.
I turned to Preston, "So, Cristina write her vows?"
"I guess I'll find out tomorrow," he shrugged. "How's Meredith doing?"
"I have no idea," I shrugged too. "Shouldn't be this difficult, should it?"
"Probably not. Then again… when I see Cristina walking down that aisle tomorrow…"
"It'll all be worth it?" I asked.
Before he could answer, Mark and Stacie are back and handing out drinks. Mark asked, "Who wants to hit the dance floor?"
"Um," Preston hesitates.
I pull him up anyway, "Oh come on."
I dance along with them for a song or two before retreating to the bar for another drink. Joe sees me coming and has already started preparing my drink. I sat down at the bar, sipped my drink and smiled, "Thanks, Joe. So hey, how'd it go with Rina?"
"Oh, well…" he trailed off. "Walter took her to the bus station, and I'm pretty sure he was wishing it was me he was dropping off."
"That bad, huh?"
"If I can't even make it through an ultrasound without breathing into a paper bag, how am I gonna handle a kid? Forget about twins," he shook his head.
I can't help but smile, "You two are gonna make great parents, okay? Whenever that happens."
"You… ever think about having kids?"
"All the time…" I trailed off.
I was so lost in thought that I hadn't realized that a guy sat down beside me until he spoke, "Hi."
"Hi," I offered.
He motioned towards Joe, "Can I buy you a drink?"
"I sort just bought myself one so I'm gonna… I'm gonna say no."
"That's too bad."
"Yeah…" I turned my attention back to Joe but he's staring towards the door.
I look towards the door to see Walter and Rina walking up. Joe questioned, "What are you doing here?"
"Sweetie, get Rina some water," Walter instructed.
I questioned, "I thought you guys were going to the bus station."
"We were. It's this heartburn. It's like it's… t's ripping through…" her voice trailed off as she fell to the floor. "…oh!"
"Call an ambulance!" I yelled as I ran to the ground. Preston, Mark and Stacie are all hovering over us now. The guys help her up as my pager goes off. It's 911 from Richard. Adele! "Fuck."
"Go! We've got this," Mark barked. "I'll page Karev!"
"Thank you," I nodded, grabbing my coat and running out of the bar.
The paramedics ran over to the bar with a gurney as another ambulance pulled up to the bay. Miranda is already there and I hear shouting as I run by, "We got the fourth climber. Pressure's 70s, last pulse 135. Severely hypothermic. Started two large-bore IVs. Oh, and, uh, obvious head trauma."
"Is that an axe in his head? What the hell happened up on that mountain? Let's go."
I knew there was more to that story. The thought rushes out of my head just as fast as it came in because all I hear is a loud, booming voice coming from down the hall. It's Richard.
"Adele! Somebody help me! Please!" he called out. "Somebody help. Please, somebody help me!"
"Richard…" I trailed off. He's sitting in the women's restroom in a pile of Adele's blood. I turned to call for a gurney but they're already here.
We get Adele into a room and I give her a quick exam. Just like I thought, she's having a miscarriage. When Adele wakes, disorientedly she asks if the baby was okay. She asks me to do what I can to save their baby. It's Richard's. A quick smile appears then vanishes from my lips as I do an ultrasound. It's slow but I find a fetal heartbeat. I give her a transfusion and fluids in the hopes that it would help. However, I had to rush Adele to the OR anyway. I did everything I could but I was unable to save the pregnancy. God, I really wanted to give them this baby.
Adele is stable and in recovery. She hasn't woken up yet but we she does, her husband will be at her side to give her the horrible news. I walk out of the ICU to see Rina, Joe and Walter in a nearby room.
Alex walks out a second later and nods at me, "Aortic dissection. Burke assisted. Twins are in the NICU and Rina is stable. How's Adele?"
I just shake my head. I don't have the heart to say it outloud. I make a dash towards the Attendings' lounge and make sure I'm alone before I burst into tears. Today has been way too long. I just want to be with my girl and go home.
On that note, I wipe away my tears and head up to the conference room. I might it to the door right as Meredith is walking out of the room. It's over…. Finally. We don't say anything. We just take each other in the deepest, longest hug known to mankind. We both really needed this. We only pull away from each other to hold hands as we make our way out of the hospital.
"Let's go home."
