Clary and I walked into Magnus' living room and told both Magnus and Jace, "We know where the Cup is."
"Come again?" Jace asked.
"The tarot cards. Our mom, she must've painted them years ago, but the Mortal Cup has to be hidden inside the Ace of Cups. The card looks exactly like it." Clary replied.
Jace and Magnus didn't say anything, and both of us knew that something wasn't right.
"Wait, why aren't you guys happy about this? All we have to do is find..." I started before realizing something.
"Dot." Clary finished for me.
"If Dot had the cards when she was taken, we don't have much time. If Valentine gets his hands on the Cup..." Jace started to say but got interrupted.
"We know. If Valentine started creating Shadowhunters or gained control of demons, it'd be like Beyonce riding a dinosaur through Times Square. People would notice." Magnus said after interrupting Jace.
"But he can control demons. We've seen it." I said.
"Mmm. Paying off a few demons is easy, especially since they rarely survive long enough to collect." Magnus said.
"Still waiting on Valentine's thank-you card." Jace said while looking at Magnus.
Clary and I gave him a small smile because at least he was trying to lighten the situation.
"Opening the gates of hell... that's a little more tricky." Magnus said.
"Valentine doesn't have the cards. I do. They're in my desk at the precinct. When Clary and Scarlett went missing, I went to the loft and I cleared everything out. 'cause I didn't want the Circle to track either of them." Luke said as he walked into the room.
"That's great. This should be easy." Clary said.
"Hmm, that's what General Custer said." Magnus said.
"Magnus is right. Valentine has spies everywhere, even in the NYPD. We have to be discreet." Luke said.
"Discreet?" I started.
"You look like something out of The Mummy movie." Clary finished.
"We'll go in the morning. Werewolf healing, remember? This is nothing a couple of hours of beauty sleep can't fix." Luke said.
The next morning, Luke, Jace, Clary, and I went to the station, and I couldn't wait to get the Cup.
"All right, cards are on my desk. It shouldn't take long." Luke told us.
"All right." Jace said before trying to go into the station.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa. It'll be easier to avoid unnecessary if I do this alone." Luke said as he stopped Jace.
"We'll wait here." Clary said.
Luke then headed inside, and I was hoping that this would go smoothly, but with our luck, it would take forever.
"It sounded boring anyway." Jace scoffed.
Clary and I just rolled our eyes, but I couldn't help but giggle at his antics.
"I've got a bad feeling about this. What is taking him so long?" I asked.
"I know a way we could find out. Just go in and see for ourselves." Jace replied.
"Luke told us to stay put, so that's what we're gonna do." Clary told us.
Jace and I shared a look because I was actually agreeing with him on going in. Clary's phone started ringing, and then said, "That's probably him now."
"I doubt it." Jace said as he looked up at the windows.
"Just so I'm clear, Luke did mention something about trying to avoid attention, right? From the looks of it, he's doing a terrible job." I told Clary and Jace as we looked at the window.
"Circle members?" Clary asked us.
"No, mundanes. Internal affairs officers." Jace replied.
"You can tell all that just by looking at them?" Clary asked.
"I can tell all that by reading their badges." Jace replied.
Clary glanced at the window, and I could tell that she was confused. Jace and I showed her our runes to clarify.
"Better than binoculars." I said.
"Luke had his chance. Let's go." Jace told us.
"Yeah." "Okay." Clary and I said together.
Clary, Jace, and I made our way into the station, glamoured by the way, and headed into the room where Luke was, once the door was opened.
"You want coffee or anything?" the detective asked Luke as he opened the door.
Luke watched us enter the room and the detective followed his gaze.
"Garroway. Coffee?" the detective called before asking the question again.
"No. No, I'm good." Luke replied.
"Suit yourself." the detective said before leaving the room.
"Camera." Luke said as he pretended to blow his nose.
"Luke, what is going on?" Clary asked as Jace turned off the camera.
"I think I'm about to be the prime suspect in a murder investigation." Luke replied.
"What do we do?" I asked.
"Get the cards. In my desk, bottom drawer." Luke replied.
"All right." Clary and I said together.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa. You can't glamour yourselves. I'm not the only Downworlder on the force, and we don't know who's working for Valentine. If anybody spots you..." Luke started.
"We'd be leading them right to the Mortal Cup." Jace finished.
"Exactly. Better to assume that everybody had the Sight than gamble that they don't." Luke said.
"Luke..." Clary said as soon as the door started to unlock.
"I can handle myself." Luke told her.
"Hey, what happened to the camera?" the detective asked as he came back into the room, and we left.
We ended up in what I believe is an evidence room, so now we just have to find the cards, and get back to the Institute.
"Really? In here?" Jace asked us.
"Why not?" I asked.
"There's got to be a better place." Jace replied.
"No, here's good." Clary said.
"Ow." I complained as I bumped into some boxes.
"All right." Jace said.
Jace and I both deglamoured ourselves and were waiting on Clary to do it herself.
"You need help with that?" Jace asked with a chuckle.
"I can deglamourize myself, Jace." Clary replied.
"It's 'deglamour'." I said.
"Whatever." Clary said.
She finally deglamoured and I was ready to get this over with.
"The cards?" Clary asked.
"Right. How exactly are we gonna get them? I doubt we can make it our of this closet without drawing attention, let alone Luke's desk, and both of you are covered in runes." Jace replied.
Clary and I glanced at each other and both of us knew that we were thinking the same thing.
"Don't worry. We've got a plan." Clary said.
"A good plan this time?" Jace questioned.
"90%. Just follow our lead." Clary started.
"Oh, and I apologize." I continued.
"Apologize for what?" Jace asked.
"The other 10%." I finished.
Jace, Clary, and I walked into the room full of detectives, and then Clary gave me a nod to let me know that our plan was a go.
"You son of a bitch!" I yelled before slapping Jace.
"Oh!" Jace yelled in shock.
"Stop following us!" Clary yelled.
"Hey, what happened to being discreet?" Jace whispered as he lightly grabbed my arm.
"Wait, what did you say?" Clary started.
"You cheated on me?" I asked as Clary and I walked further into the room.
"I... Huh? I did not. Whoa." Jace replied as two other officers stepped in Jace's way.
"You will never see me at your crappy apartment again." I said as Clary and I headed to Luke's desk.
"That girl means nothing to me. Nothing." Jace told us.
Clary went looking for the cards but came up empty.
"Is that the boyfriend that I heard so much about?" a female detective asked as she walked up to Clary and me.
"Nope, not anymore. I'm dumping him." I replied.
"Hi." Jace said.
"Where is all of Luke's stuff?" Clary asked.
"IA took everything. What are looking for?" the female detective asked.
"I, uh... I lost a house key and Luke normally keeps a spare in his desk, so is there any way we can get it?" I replied.
"Uh, not till he's cleared." the female detective said.
"Cleared? Of... of what?" Clary questioned confused.
"Oh, don't worry about it. We'll get it handled." the female detective replied.
"Oh." I added.
"Scarlett, I'm sorry. I apologize. I just want you to know that it only happened, like... two or... it just happened a couple of times and I am totally..." Jace started to say.
"Shut up." all three of us said.
"Babe, come on." Jace said.
"Listen, you don't get to call her 'babe', okay? In fact, you don't get to call her at all. Scarlett's done with you. You got it? Take him out?" the female detective told Jace before talking to the other officers.
"I have rights." Jace said as the officers led him out.
"Perhaps it's for the best?" the female detective asked me as she turned to look at me.
I sighed and Clary gave me a hug to keep our plan going.
"Oh, matching tattoos. That's... big red flag." the female detective said as she noticed my runes.
"Oh. This... it's nothing." I said as I tried to hide my runes.
"Don't worry about it. I get it. You always fall for the bad boys, right? Oh, is that just me?" the female detective asked.
"Uh, right, right. Uh... we really need that key." I replied.
"I'm sorry, Clary, Scarlett, but IA has all of Luke's things in the evidence vault upstairs." the female detective said.
"Oh." Clary and I said together.
"Maybe I can help you find the one you lost. Did you check your bag?" the female detective asked as she looked at Clary.
"Oh, my God! You're totally right. Thank you so much." Clary said before we left the building.
We met up with Jace and he was still upset that I slapped him.
"You know what? I'm gonna bring Alec with me next time. I don't think he's ever slapped me in the face." Jace told us.
"I'm sorry, I panicked." I told him.
"Someone call for backup?" Izzy asked as we walked up to both her and Alec.
"Yeah. What took you guys so long?" Jace asked.
"Funny, I was gonna ask you the same thing." Alec replied.
"It's complicated." Jace said.
"We found the Cup." Clary started.
"The Cup?" Izzy asked in complete shock.
"Yeah, but then we lost it. We have to sneak back in the precinct to get it." I finished.
"This is a disaster." Alec said.
"Hey, demon pox is a disaster. This is an inconvenience. We just need a plan. That's all." Jace said.
"What about a glamour?" Izzy asked.
"We tried that. Anyone working for Valentine will see right through it." I replied.
"Can we ask Magnus Bane to portal us inside?" Clary asked.
"No." Alec replied.
"That would be awkward." Izzy said.
Alec gave her a look and I was tempted to ask but decided against it.
"Magnus can only portal us to places he's been to before." Izzy added.
Clary's phone started to ring and I knew that it was most likely Simon. She went to answer it and motioned for me to follow her. I followed and listened as Simon freaked out over being sick. Clary tried to calm him down, but even I could tell that it wasn't working.
"Hey." Clary and I said as Jace took her phone and hanging up on Simon.
"Simon's little problem can wait. I've got a plan." Jace told us.
"Oh, there's a first." I said with a smile.
"Just follow my lead. Oh, and don't worry, in my plan, no one gets slapped." Jace added.
Clary and I followed after Jace and I hope this works, but Lord only knows who else is looking for the Cup.
"So, we were promised a great plan." I said to Jace.
"We'll head up to the vault. Alec and Izzy are handling the rest. All we have to do is wait for their signal... and grab the Cup." Jace explained.
The elevator door opened and Alaric was standing there. Jace grabbed me and I grabbed Clary to hide us.
"He's on our side." Clary said.
"You sure? Isn't that the line he used when he kidnapped you and Scarlett?" Jace asked.
"Good point." Clary replied.
All of is entered the elevator and then Jace closed the doors.
"What now? We're supposed to climb the elevator shaft and waltz in the vault unnoticed?" Clary asked.
"Now, why didn't I think of that?" Jace asked sarcastically.
Clary and I both laughed and then she noticed that Jace wasn't kidding.
"Wait, you're kidding, right?" Clary asked as she looked between Jace and myself.
"Remember the binoculars?" I asked.
"Yeah." Clary replied.
"This one's a Nyx rune. It's like night vision. You can copy mine. You got it?" Jace explained as he slightly pulled down the collar of his shirt to show Clary the rune.
"Yeah. Why do I need night vision?" Clary asked.
"You'll see." Jace replied.
Jace and I watched as Clary tried to draw the rune, but was struggling.
"Feel free to ask for help." Jace told Clary.
Clary just looked over at me, so I went over to help her and helped her draw the rune.
"Thanks, sis." Clary said.
"Anytime." I said back.
Now we wait for Alec and Izzy.
"I think you messed something up." Clary told me.
"Really? No, I didn't." I said with a hurt expression.
"Then why isn't it working?" Clary asked.
"It is." Jace replied.
All of a sudden, the lights went out and I was thankful for that.
"That's the signal." Jace added.
"Whoa." Clary said while looking at Jace.
"Right?" Jace asked as he gave me a wink.
I rolled my eyes but gave him a wink back.
"Going up." Jace said before going out the shaft first.
I followed after him and he helped me with Clary. We finally made it to the evidence vault, so now we can get the Cup and get out of here.
"What is all this crap? Lunch receipts?" Jace asked as he looked at the different boxes.
"No. It's all the evidence that the police gather to put people away." I explained.
Before another word was said, Clary had all of us glamoured as a night guard came through.
"You're getting pretty good with your stele." I whispered to Clary.
"Well, at least we know he's not a Downworlder." Clary told us.
"Lucky for us. Give us a heads up next time you're gonna do that." Jace said.
I just rolled my eyes and went with Clary to find what we needed.
"This is it." Clary said as she grabbed a box.
She started going through the box and kept looking at the pictures of all of us. I was trying not to cry because I miss Jocelyn so bad and I can't wait to get her back.
"This will take all day." Jace said with a sigh.
Clary then dumped the box and I was making sure that the night guard didn't hear that.
"Or you could just do that." I said while shaking my head.
"That looks exactly like the Mortal Cup." Jace said as Clary came across the Cup.
"This is it. It has to be." Clary said.
She then tried to reach through the card to grab the Cup, but nothing was happening.
"What's wrong?" I asked because I was starting to get worried.
"I'm not sure. I..." Clary said and I knew that this was going to set us back.
"You're not sure what's wrong or you're not sure where your mom hid Cup?" Jace asked with a slight growl.
I growled back at him because he's not going to talk to my sister that way. We ended up leaving the building and meeting back up with Alec, Izzy, and Serena, who has joined us.
"Did you get it?" Alec asked.
"Theoretically." I replied.
"Theoretically?" Serena asked confused.
"Yeah." I sighed.
Serena could tell by the look on my face that something was extremely wrong with all of this.
"We found the card. I just have to figure out how I reached into my notebook before. It's... It's not an exact science." Clary explained.
"Can you just pull the Cup out?" Alec asked.
"I can, theoretically. I just... It's not as easy as it looks, Alec." Clary replied.
"Listen, you two can discuss theories as much as you want when we get back to the Institute. But right now, considering we just stole from the cops, I suggest we go..." Jace said.
"Guys..." I said once I saw Izzy's necklace pulsing.
"I think the mundanes might be the least of our worries." Izzy continued.
"Well, at least we know the demon necklace works." Alec added.
"Never a dull day. Let's go." Jace said.
We all started walking and I could tell that Clary was having trouble keeping up.
"Guys, slow down." Clary called out to us.
We continued walking until I heard Clary say, "Oh, I am so sorry."
I turned around and saw this elderly lady screech at Clary.
"Grandma." I said as I walked up.
The lady screeched at me as I pulled her to me and stabbed her with my blade.
"What the hell?" Clary asked as she stood up.
"Language. Not in front of Grandma." Jace said.
"How did it find us?" Alec asked.
"I don't know... but she brought friends." Jace replied as more demons showed up.
"How can you tell?" Clary asked as we continued to walk.
"It's like seeing through a glamour. You just got to pay attention to details." I replied.
"But I can't see anything." Clary said.
"Behind us." Izzy called out.
"I... I still can't see them." Clary stuttered.
We ended up stopping because more demons started showing up.
"Okay, there's way too many people." Clary said.
"I don't often say this, but I agree with Clary. We gotta get out of here." Alec said.
"Hey, this way!" Clary called as we all took off after her.
"What's the unlock rune?" Clary asked as we got to a locked door.
Jace kicked the door in and said, "Open sesame."
I rolled my eyes because now Jace is just showing off, but I can honestly say that he looked hot doing that. Serena lightly nudged me and I gave her a smile.
"Hey, what are you doing?" Jace asked Alec as he got ready to fight.
"Holding them off. Take Clary and Scarlett back to the Institute." Alec replied.
"No, if you're staying, I'm staying. We fight together." Jace argued.
"Don't be stupid. If the demons get the Cup, we're dead anyways." Alec argued back.
"We're not leaving anyone behind." Serena said as she stepped in.
"I know you guys are having a moment, okay? But we really have to go." Clary interrupted.
"Don't worry. It's not like this is the first time Alec has saved your life. I doubt it'd be the last." Izzy said before we started walking away.
As we got further away, Clary decided that she needed to stop to take a breath.
"Hold on. I'm sorry, Jace." Clary said.
"It's okay. We can take a breather." Jace said.
"No, it's not that... I, um..." Clary started to say but stopped.
"We'll scout ahead." Izzy said as her and Serena started to walk off.
"I'll come with you." I said as I joined them.
"Guys? It's pulsing." Izzy called out as Jace and Clary joined us.
"Again?" Clary asked confused.
I love Clary to death but doesn't she realize that the demons are coming for her and the Cup.
"Getting close. Let's spread out." Serena said as all of us got ready to fight.
"Izzy, where is it?" Jace asked.
"I don't know. It's like they're here, but I can't see them." Izzy replied.
All of a sudden a demon attacks Jace. I stepped in and helped him out. Jace gave me a grateful smile and I returned it. Clary then joined us and something just rubbed me the wrong way.
"Are either of you hurt?" Clary asked us.
"We'll live." Jace replied and I just agreed.
"What are those things?" Clary asked.
"Shax demons." I started.
"They're like the bloodhounds of the Shadow World." Jace finished.
"They've been tracking us." Izzy added.
"So what do we do?" Clary asked.
"The Institute's only a couple of blocks from here." Serena started.
"We can't lose them, but they won't be able to track us if we split up." Jace finished.
"But, I don't... I don't..." Clary stuttered.
"Clary, you'll be fine." I reassured her.
"Izzy, Jace, and I will draw them away." Serena told us.
"No matter what happens, just keep running." Jace added.
"They're coming." Izzy said.
"Jace, I..." Clary started to say.
"Run, Clary!" Jace yelled.
Clary took off running and I got ready to fight.
"You need to run too, Scar." Jace told me.
"Like hell I'm running. She's my sister and I'm going to fight to keep her safe." I growled.
Jace smirked at me and got ready to fight. Serena gave me a smile, which I returned, and we fought like hell to protect my sister. We ended up back at the Institute and Jace was going stir crazy, but so was I.
"These tunnels are swarming with Shax demons. If she's down there, it's only a matter of time before they find her. We need to make sure that doesn't happen." I started.
"All right, listen up. I want this entire Institute on high alert. I don't care what anybody else says, I'll take full responsibility." Jace added.
"Right now, Clary is the only thing that matters." Jace and I finished together.
"Jace! Scar!" Clary called out.
"Clary." Jace and I said together.
Clary came down and hugged us both and I was happy that she was okay. I stepped back after hugging Clary and Jace started talking.
"I did it. I got the Cup." Clary told us.
"We don't care about the Cup. When we came out of the tunnels, we didn't see you. Both of us were worried something might have happened..." I said.
"There was a demon. Shapeshifter. It looked just like you." Clary told Jace.
"You all right?" Jace asked.
"Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine." Clary replied.
"And the demon?" I asked.
"I sent him straight back to hell." Clary replied.
"How'd you know it wasn't me?" Jace asked.
"I just knew." Clary replied.
Where the hell is this conversation going?
"Really? Kind of a risk, wasn't it?" Jace asked.
"Well, this may come as a surprise, but I actually do listen to some of the things you and Scarlett tell me. You just have to pay attention to detail." Clary replied.
"Yeah, well, I told you the first time we met, you have the Sight. You're a Shadowhunter, just like the rest of us." Jace said.
Clary decided to do something I thought she would never do, she kissed Jace. What surprised me even more was that Jace kissed her back. I couldn't handle it anymore, so I took off running, and didn't stop until I couldn't run anymore.
*Serena's POV*
"Scarlett!" I yelled as she took off.
I want to kill Jace and Clary at the moment. Alec went after Scarlett, but came back empty handed. I could tell he wasn't too thrilled either, but he was also worried about Scarlett because he's taken a liking to her. After Jace and Clary broke apart, Clary started looking for Scarlett.
"She took off." I growled.
"What do you mean she took off?" Clary asked.
"Oh, I don't know. Maybe you shouldn't have stuck your tongue down Jace's throat, then maybe you would've known that she took off." I growled.
"That's enough Serena." Jace said as he stepped in.
"Go ahead and protect her Jace. You've been playing Scarlett since she got here. If you didn't actually have feelings for her, then you should've told her, but instead you strung her along. You can keep your asses here while Izzy, Alec, and I go look for our friend." I growled before bumping shoulders with Jace and going to look for Scarlett.
*End of POV*
I just kept running and stopped when I couldn't breathe. I jumped out of my skin when someone stood next to me.
"You shouldn't be out here this late." Taylor said as she appeared next to me.
I couldn't really answer her because I was trying so hard not to break down again. My phone kept going off, so I finally decided to turn it off.
"Scar, what's wrong?" Taylor asked as she watched me put my phone up.
I broke down and told her everything. Taylor then led me inside and kept me close to her. I guess I fell asleep because the next thing I know, I'm being shaken awake. Taylor had went and gotten me some clothes, so I changed into them and followed after her.
