The feeling of being nudged and the sound of anxious and worried croons is what woke the small human girl up. It took a moment for her to be able to open her eyes, and when she did, Hicca found her vision to be blurry.
All too sudden a heavy weight was pressed down on her stomach while her face was drenched in dragon saliva.
"T-Toothless! Cal - eww it got in my mouth!" Raising her arms up, Hicca shoved the large scaly beast off of her. Taking a moment to wipe the sticky substance off of her face and blinking a few times to clear her vision, Hicca looked to Toothless who was sitting beside her and was shaking in excitement.
Smiling weakly, Hicca motioned for the dragon to come closer, but warned him to be gentle; to which Toothless took seriously as he approached his human and laid down beside her. He kept his acid green eyes trained on Hicca as though if he looked away for even a second, she would disappear.
Hicca reached out and stoked the side Toothless's head with a warm and gentle smile. "I'm okay bud. I'm…" something felt off. Sensing Hicca's unease, Toothless got up slowly and turned around and gently nudged her leg.
Taking a deep breath, Hicca sat up and looked down to her leg, and nearly screamed, for where her calf and foot and toes should be, was empty space with charred skin and gashes above the area. Hyperventilating with fear, Hicca squeezed her eyes shut in an attempt to calm down, but quickly opened her eyes as she felt Toothless begin to lick the stump.
"Bud, no-" Hicca stopped as the pain she had felt slowly disappeared and the limb went numb and slowly healed some of the gashes. The teen watched in amazement as she had forgotten the magical ability her best friend possessed.
When he pulled away and returned to looking into Hicca's forest green eyes, Hicca smiled and rubbed his head "thank you" she said quietly.
A thought accrued.
How was she supposed to walk around, control Toothless's tail fin, and most importantly, get off the ash barren island?
Again sensing her distress, Toothless stood on his hind legs and called out, summoning a Nadder and a Monstrous Nightmare to his side. Hicca looked between the three drakes as they communicated.
After a few more growls, the three dragons turned to Hicca and looked at her intently "uh… I… I don't know what you want…" Toothless came close to his human and gently nudged her in a way that sent a message to get up. With his help, Hicca slowly and painfully stood up on her one leg and used Toothless for balance as he led her over to the Deadly Nadder.
Looking to her best friend with confusion as to what he wanted her to do, Toothless carefully nudged Hicca closer to the unfamiliar dragon and pushed her against the dragons side. "Do you… do you want me to get onto their back?" The human asked slowly. Toothless nodded his head, and with his help, Hicca clumsily got onto the Deadly Nadders back. "Okay, now what?"
Hicca squeaked as the Nadder suddenly took off, making Hicca quickly cling to its scaly neck for support. She looked back at Toothless and found him being carried by the Monstrous Nightmare close behind.
As they flew over and away from the island and over the ocean in a random direction, Hicca felt exhaustion wash over her. Closing her eyes, Hicca was lulled into a peaceful slumber.
When Hicca came to once again, She found herself in an unfamiliar medical hut. She furrowed her brows as she looked around herself to get an idea as to which tribe she was in, and where her best friend was and tried to remember how she got here. Before she could come to any conclusions, someone walked into the room and met her eyes.
The lady was obviously this village healer. She was a middle aged woman with red hair that is lighter than Stoicks and sapphire eyes that held kindness and wisdom. "Hello dear; about time you woke up."
Taking a moment to find her bearings, Hicca opened her mouth "where am I? How did I get here, and how long have I been out?"
The woman smiled "well, you are in a medical hut, and you have been out for two days." She answered "but as to how you got here, we are not sure. We found you just on the outskirt of the village. You were very wounded and had severe injuries. So the chief decided that I would heal you, and once you were better, he would speak to you."
Hicca remembered how she had been carried away from the nest on the back of a Deadly Nadder with Toothless being carried away by a Monstrous Nightmare, and figured that they had left her there to get the help the drakes could not provide. Clever boy.
"O-okay… How long till I meet your chief?" Hicca inquired. The healer shook her head "not for a while, deary. He is with our council, discussing what we need to do to protect our village from those vile beasts with wings." Hicaa shuddered at the thought of what this village could possibly do to the magnificent creatures that she has come to love with all her being. "For now though, you should get adjusted to that new leg."
Confused, Hicca pulled away the fur that swallowed her small frame, and nearly fainted.
Where her left leg once used to be, now was a stump with a - from what she could deduce from her years of being an apprentice of a blacksmith - leveled and well balanced metal prosthetic.
The ex-viking (was she ever even one to begin with?) would have marveled at it and had eagerly tried to figure out how it was so well made, had it been any other viking.
But for now, Hicca quickly looked away from the contraption and covered her stump. It would take a while to get used to.
'Now I know how Toothless feels…' thinking of her reptilian friend made Hicca's heart turn cold, longing for her most trusted companion to be by her side.
